u rban pape r mi l lIt is not difficult to understand why most alchemists view the making of paper to be chief among practices of their mystical arts. Papermaking apprentices were often locked in cells at the end of a hard day’s work to keep secret the delicate processes of an individual mill.

For hundreds of years, discarded rags and garments have been beaten and macerated, bleached and dyed, then suspended in vats of water, naturally containing lime from nearby mineral rich aquifers. Semioticians can scarcely articulate the wonder found in these freshly formed, wet sheets of paper drawn from these self-same vats of cotton pulp.

We are about the business of forming sheets in the same manner, and have been doing so for a quarter century.

The traditional tradesman would learn the craft as a printer’s devil by hand-setting lead type from job cases and galleys into steel chases. Jobs would be printed, the shop would be swept, and the inky type cleaned with kerosene then redistributed for work in the morrow.

While employing the same tools, daily work in our shop involves the use of soy ink, natural citrus solvents, and flexible polymer plates printed on sheets of paper that are still fed one at a time into mechanical platen presses.

our g reen approachWe have always been attracted to the benefits and practicality of recycling. In fact, our business has its roots in taking unwanted fibers, converting them back into pulp, and making it into fresh, new paper.

Over twenty years after our craft beginnings, we are still making paper and following recycling principles. The fiber source for our handmade paper is100% acid-free cotton recovered from the garment industry. We supply envelopes made from 100% post-consumer waste. We use wind energy to run our business. All of our letterpress pieces are printed with soy inks and citrus solvents on antique presses.

This business was founded on practicing a green approach, thank you for supporting our enthusiasm for conservation and recycling.

cus tom orde r sLetterpress printing reflects an era of quality and craftsmanship. This historic method of printing uses raised type and images, inked and pressed into the surface of heavy papers. Sheets are fed one at a time, by hand into cast iron platen presses. Some presses in our letterpress studio date back over 100 years.

Our process begins with original designs, tailored to your occasion. For each order our production staff creates individual plates on location, prints with soy based inks, and finishes every piece by hand. We offer a selection of wedding invitation and business card templates.
