Whether you need all, several, or just one tooth replaced, dental implants are often

the best choice for you. Dental implants are the most natural replacement for missing

teeth. Without attaching anything to other teeth or needlessly filing down previously

untreated teeth, dental implants are now routine procedure for the replacement of

teeth. Implants look a lot like the root of a tooth and are made of a material compatible

with the jaw. They can be done with local anesthesia, in our office and generally in one

visit.

Implants have been acknowledged since the 1960’s, but have become more com-

monplace since the late 1980’s. They have a 90 to 99% success rate, depending on the

type of implant and the area they are being placed. Implants are reasonably affordable,

and often-times less expensive than the cost of a 3 unit bridge when replacing a single

tooth. And with more insurance companies covering a portion of the cost, your good

feeling and well being that you receive from having implants, will be priceless!

Thirty-two are the number of teeth in an average mouth.

When a person’s teeth are missing, stained or discolored, chipped, cracked, crooked or

have too many silver fillings, they may feel inhibited to smile.

This is where Dr. Barry Cohan and Advanced Dentistry & Implantology comes in.

Dr. Michael Abrams Dentistry

Dr. Michael Abrams, a specialistin periodontal work and implants, is adentist who is a leader in his field..His beautiful state-of-the-art facilityis located in Bergen Beach/ MillBasin at 6910 Avenue U (718-444-3800).

Among his many accomplish-ments is that he invented the processof computerized dental implantplacement. “This patented tech-nique,” he says, “has really revolu-tionized the oral implantology field.”It is now used throughout the country.

It provides dentists with guides, sothat implants may be placed moreaccurately., safely and in a minimal-ly-invasive manner. Before this newtechnology, implant placement couldbe “very difficult, time-consumingand traumatic for the patient,” hesays. Adding, “What once was a twohour procedure can now be done inless than half the time.”

The technology is based on a CTscan of the of the patient’s jawbone. This provides the doctor with anaccurate 3-dimensional picture of thesite where the patient is missingteeth. This ensures that there are nosurprises at the time of implant place-ment.

“Dental implant treatment is botha science and an art. Poorly or inac-curately placed implants can lead tosignificant compromise for the out-come of the case,” says Dr. Abrams. What could be a beautiful result forthe patient can be turned into a night-mare if errors are made by theimplant surgeon. At BrooklynPeriodontics and Implantology, Dr.Abrams delivers the highest level ofexpertise to provide the patient withimplanted teeth that are both func-tional and naturally beautiful.

Dr. Abrams has traveled the coun-

try, lecturing for various professionaldental organizations about his inno-vative treatments. He has presentedtwice as a main podium speaker atthe Academy of OsseointegrationAnnual meeting. The AO is the mostprestigious dental implant organiza-tion worldwide.

Here in Brooklyn, he is thefounder and director of The BrooklynDental Forum Study Club. This pro-fessional educational forum providesdentists in the community with lec-ture presentations from outstandingexperts in the dental field.. Theseinformative seminars are great atkeeping dental professionals up todate on the latest advances in den-tistry.

In addition to keeping up with hisvery active implant practice, Dr.Abrams serves as Vice President ofImplant Logic Systems, Inc. the

implant technology company thatfeatures his award-winning technolo-gy.

For more than 20 years, Dr.Abrams has built his reputation as anexpert in the treatment of periodontaldisease, also known as gum disease, something that many people don’teven know they have. “Symptoms

include bad breath, loose teeth, orbleeding when you brush,” he says.“Periodontal disease is the leadingcause of tooth loss in adults and ifcaught in time can be treated effec-tively.”

In addition, Dr. Abrams advisesthat gum disease is now linked to a

host of health problems includingheart disease, stroke and Diabetes.“Medical research has suggested thatperiodontal bacteria may contributeto blood clots and other pathologythat can have serious implications forsome patients.

Cosmetic Smile Enhancement is aplastic surgery procedure performed

on the gums that Dr. Abrams has spe-cial expertise in. “We can re-shape aperson’s smile and give them a moreattractive and youthful appearance!”he says.

The beautifully-appointed officefeaturing the latest in digital technol-ogy is staffed with friendly profes-sionals who go out of their way toassure your comfort.

Dr. Gadi Avshalomov Allergist

One can’t rightfully say they’rewinning their personal war againstpollen, dust mites and cat danderuntil they’ve consulted with Dr. GadiAvshalomov, who is not only a boardcertified specialist in adult and pedi-atric allergies, asthma and clinicalimmunology, but tackles each of hispatient’s cases as an investigatorengrossed in a perplexing whodunitwould.

“Being an allergist is a lot likebeing a detective for every patient,”he said, speaking from his practice at7001 Avenue U, one of three loca-tions in Brooklyn and Long Islandwhere he helps allergy and asthmasufferers.

Dr. Avshalomov is a believer inwhat he calls the “1, 2, 3” approachto combating allergies – which isquite similar to how a local constablewould approach a puzzlingmystery.

Step One: Dr. Avshalomovinvestigates the “scene of thecrime,” of sorts.

The patient comes in for anappointment where theirsymptoms are scrutinized andanalyzed with the utmost careand attention.

Since starting his practicein 2000, Dr. Avshalomov hasseen it all, from running nosesto rash-raw skin. Patients havecome to him with eczema anddermatitis, sinus and pul-monary problems to havingtheir throats swollen because theyingested something as small as a wal-nut.

“It’s fascinating how tiny invisiblethings can affect us to such a degree,”he continued. “These allergens don’tactually harm us, it’s just that our

immune system perceives that it’sgoing to do us harm and respondsaccordingly. That’s why knowinghow to master the immune system isso important.”

Which brings us to step two:Through a battery of tests Dr.Avshalomov begins to root out sus-pects – the allergens that are causingthe uncomfortable physical reactionsthey’re suffering from.

He notes that most patients sufferfrom environmental allergies – dustmites, cats and dogs, pollen or sea-sonal changes.

Many also suffer from “benignneglect,” he said.

“Many times the symptoms startout small, so they don’t seek anallergist’s help,” he said. “They fallinto a trap that only leads to moresevere symptoms. They then try to

treat the problem with over thecounter drugs. But after they tryabout ten to twenty different pillsand all the sprays, they’re still suf-fering because those medications arenothing more than band aids. Theonly effective treatment is

immunotherapy (allergy shot).”Once the tests are completed, Step

Three is right around the corner:Book ‘em, Dano.

With a fully stocked lab at his dis-posal, he and a certified staff RNunder his direction, Dr. Avshalomovarrests these allergic reactions withcustom made sera and allergy shots.

“Nothing is ever generic or ‘onesize fits all,’” he said. “Everyone hasa unique reaction to allergens, soeveryone needs a unique treatmentregimen.”

For patients with severe foodallergies, Dr. Avshalomovcarefully takes themthrough every step of theprocess. He also developsan action plan with themso both the patient andtheir families know howto respond when an emer-gency reaction – some ofwhich could be quite dan-gerous – takes hold.

“Education is the cor-nerstone of this practice,”he said.

Besides educating hispatients, Dr. Avshalomov

is helping the next generation ofallergists and immunologists learnthe latest, cutting edge treatmenttechniques as an assistant clinicalprofessor at Schneider Children’sHospital, Long Island JewishMedical Center.

Some of these progressive treat-

ments, such as anti Ig(Immunoglobulin) antibody therapyfor severe asthma patients is alreadyavailable at his practice.

He is also making space for a stateof the art respiratory lab wherepatients walk on treadmills and areput through a variety of exercisetechniques so Dr. Avshalomov canaccurately pinpoint just how activityand stress trigger their asthma.

“These techniques have beenaround, but most patients don’t haveaccess to them because their doctorsdo not have enough asthmaticpatients,” he said. “We’re reachingthat threshold.”

Dr. Barry Cohan Dental Implantologist

Dr. Barry Cohan is “one of thefew implantologists in Brooklyn,”.The Board-certified doctor prac-tices surgery and restorative den-tistry. He is also certified inInvisalign, the invisible way tostraighten teeth.

The Brooklyn-born Dr. Cohanhas been serving the community for27 years. “My philosophy is alwaysto aid in the overall health of mypatients,” he says. It is for this rea-son that he recommends regularcleanings to maintain overall well-being. “It is a known fact that a dis-eased mouth can be a cause of ill-ness in other parts of the body,” hesays. “By practicing preventivedentistry, with emphasis on regularmaintenance in oral care for thepreservation of teeth and gums, mypatients will reap the benefits ofoverall health,” he says.

It is because of this philosophythat the doctor “has not placed amercury-silver (amalgam) filling inseven years,” he says. “For one sim-ple reason — I know it is not safe.Mercury is a well-known toxicmetal.” While using mercury-silvermay be a cheaper way to fill a tooth,in the long run, it “can compromiseyour health, taking a toll financial-ly, physically, and emotionally,” hesays.

The doctor points out that it isillegal to use amalgam in “severalEuropean nations,” and thatAmerican manufacturers “put warn-ings in the amalgam packaging, stating not to place mercury-silverin pregnant women.” Interestingly,he says that some doctors are call-ing “for the cessation of using mer-cury-filled thermometers.”

When you look good, you feelgood, and this contributes to overall

well-being, too. If you haven’t beenhappy with your smile, Dr. Cohan isthe person to see. He can assist withbleaching, veneers, and laser bond-ing. One of his fields of expertiseincludes Invisalign. “Invisalign hashelped people all over the worldachieve the smiles they have alwayswanted,” says the doctor, and itaccomplishes this feat “withoutmetal braces.” If teeth are crooked, protruding, or should there besomething wrong with your bite,Invisalign can transform yoursmile.

It works like this: Patients weara set of custom-made Alignerswhich are removed when you eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Whileworn, your teeth gradually moveinto the desired position. Patients

need to visit the doctor about everysix weeks, and total treatment timeaverages six to 15 months, says Dr.Cohan.

Should you need to have teethreplaced, “dental implants are themost natural replacement for miss-ing teeth,” he says. “They are rea-

sonably affordable, and often-timesless expensive than the cost of athree-unit bridge,” he says.Generally speaking, the procedurecan be done with local anesthesia, often “in one visit,” says the doctor,an expert in this field.

Dr. Cohan is a graduate of theNYU College of Dentistry. He is aFellow of the InternationalCongress of Oral Implantologists, and has completed numerous post-doctoral and advanced programs inDental Implantology and Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction, commonly known as TMJ.

TMJ is a misalignment of thejaws. Symptoms can includeheadache, neck pain, backache, ear-aches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, chronic fatigue, pain, and more. Butthere is good news. Dr. Cohan canhelp. “Years of pain and sufferingcan be alleviated by techniques andappliances specially designed torealign the jaws,” he says.

The state-of-the-art office con-sists of career professionals whoare highly trained and sensitive tothe needs of others, he says. In par-ticular, they are “sensitive to the

problems and personal nature of theseverely handicapped dentalpatient, as well as an anxiety-filledpatient.”

In addition to the Brooklyn loca-tion, Dr. Cohan has a practice onLong Island.

Dr. Stephen Cohen Dentistry

When you smile, do you like whatyou see?

The patients who make regularvisits to the dental office of Dr.Stephen Cohen sure do.

Dr. Cohen is a highly skilled den-tist, with over 25 years of experiencein the field. He has lectured acrossthe country, offering insight about hisprofession to his peers. During hiscareer, he has taught classes; wasinstrumental in the development of asenior citizen dental clinic; and thenvolunteered his services there.

He has a thriving practice in gen-eral dentistry with a specialty inprosthodontics (caps and bridges), inthe neighborhood he likes to refer toas “the heart of Park Slope.”

Dr. Cohen believes “There’s noth-ing like your own teeth,” which iswhy he educates his patients on howto maintain them. He stresses caringfor the gums, promising that peoplewho take care of their gums “do nothave as many problems,” as thosewho neglect them. In fact, caring foryour gums can help save your teeth, and promote good health.

For those who require it, Dr. Cohenwill perform root planing and curet-tage. This treatment cleans parts of theteeth, below the gum line. Even if youbrush regularly, this area may be diffi-cult to reach. Yet, if neglected, gum“pockets” can start to develop aroundthe teeth, and this can lead to disease,as the bone supporting the teeth weak-ens. Root planing cleans out the pock-ets, removing bacteria and plaque thatmay have accumulated. When per-formed, this procedure can save yourteeth and prevent gum disease.

If you’re among the many whoavoid smiling because you’re embar-rassed to show chipped, cracked, uneven, or gapped teeth, Dr. Cohen

can help. “We use state-of-the-artresin bonded restorations,” he says, and with proper care, your new brightand beautiful smile, will “last a longtime.” Today’s bonding can take careof a multitude of problems, includingteeth that are stained or crooked.

Likewise, those in need of bridgesor crowns will be delighted with theirattractive appearance. “We do perfectcolor matching,” says the doctor.Caps are made from a combination ofmetal and porcelain materials for avery natural appearance.

The laboratory that creates caps, crowns, and bridges, is “excellent,”says the doctors. As a result, patientsleave the office, feeling secure thatthe new additions to their mouths are“well-fitted and beautiful.”

Bridges are used to replace miss-ing teeth, allowing you to look goodcosmetically, and to be able to chewfood properly. They are also impor-tant because they prevent teeth fromshifting to “fill in” open spaces in themouth. Should this happen, it canaffect your ability to eat, cause toothdecay, and other complications.

Your safety and well-being arealways uppermost on the doctor’smind. The instruments he uses areautoclaved through a hospital gradesterilization procedure.

All of the equipment used at theoffice is the finest, state-of-the-artequipment available in dentistrytoday, says the doctor. For example,he uses a fiber-optic drill whichallows him to “better visually inspectpatients’ mouths.” X-rays are takenwith a panoramic x-ray machine, which provides the doctor with amuch more efficient way of lookingat a person’s entire mouth. Thisincredible invention offers benefits topatients too. It has much less radia-

tion that a full set of smaller x-rays,and many people find that it’s a morecomfortable procedure.

Making patients comfortable andkeeping them at ease is Dr. Cohen’spriority. “The patient is alwaysrespected,” he says, and this courtesybegins when someone walks thoughthe door of the office. The staff aretrained professionals “who reallycare about people,” says the doctor, and who help set the tone so that atrip to this dental office is a “gentle, kind, and relaxed experience.”

For starters, you won’t sit in thewaiting room, anxiously waiting fortime to pass because everyone at thisfacility values time, including yours.“We take patients exactly on time,”says Dr. Cohen. You won’t find hiswaiting room brimming with peoplebecause the office schedules patientsby appointment only, he says, and it’sdone in an efficient manner.

When you do see Dr. Cohen, hewill take his time with you, patientlyanswer any questions you may have, and fully explain any procedures thatyou may require. After all, he is anexpert in the field of oral restorationand prosthodontics. Patients can restassured, knowing that they are thehands of a professional, who has

always excelled. Dr. Cohen is a grad-uate of the prestigious TempleUniversity School of Dentistry’s spe-cial accelerated program. He is amember of the Oral Surgery HonorSociety, the Academy of GeneralDentistry, and the Second DistrictDental Society.

Make your oral health and well-being a priority. Make an appoint-ment to see Dr. Cohen today.

Dr. Saka Kazeem Internal Medicine & Endocrinology

Keeping the heart healthy is thegoal of ELK Medical.

They strive to achieve this goal byoffering a Diabetes EducationProgram; by the practices in place attheir Weight Loss Center; and by inte-grating medicine with holisticapproaches to prevent and treat ill-ness, says Dr. Saka Kazeem, MedicalDirector. “We use vitamins and nutri-ents derived from plant roots toimprove or prevent diabetes and otherchronic illnesses.”

ELK Medical uses a “wellnessapproach,” meaning that everything isdone to prevent heart disease, “a prob-lem that you get from diabetes, bybeing overweight,” and by a numberof other chronic conditions, includingthyroid problems, the doctor says.

The most up-to-date technology isused to assist these endeavors, includ-ing a wireless diabetes monitoringsystem that records data, and that isthen downloaded into a computer, providing the doctor with specific andaccurate information. Medication canthen be adjusted for each individual, using these statistics.

It works like this: The doctor sayshe provides this “small medicaldevice” to the patient, and it is wornon the back or the stomach. “You thengo about your business,” he says, forthree days, while this “very powerfulunit measures sugar, and provides uswith a lot more information than canbe obtained by pricing a finger.”

ELK Medical also diagnoses “pre-diabetes, treating and preventing,” it.This is when blood levels “are notnormal,” explains the doctor, “but notin the diabetes range” yet. Takingthese steps early on, means that dia-betes can be prevented about “60%”of the time, he says. How is thisachieved? “With very aggressivemonitoring and with special meals.”

Diet is very important. A nutrition-ist is on staff, and patients are provid-ed with detailed menus, booklets,

DVDs, and calendars to record whatthey eat. Low-glycemic meals are rec-ommended. “This is food that doesn’tmake sugars go too high,” the doctorsays. A selection of recommendedvegetables, protein, fruit, and starchare provided, and eating these typesof meals is not just good for peoplewho have diabetes; it’s good foreveryone because it “keeps the hearthealthy,” he says.

For example, food that is high infiber, coupled with an exercise pro-gram, prevents diabetes and “pro-motes wellness,” the doctor says.Interestingly, he points out that greenbananas contain “high complex car-bohydrates, and are very high infiber,” while those that are “too ripe, turn right into sugar.” Likewise, watermelon is not necessarily a fruitto indulge in. “It’s too high in sugar.”

Eating the right type of bread isalso important. Dr. Kazeem says thata piece of white bread and a piece ofwheat bread could have the sameamount of calories, but white breadwill increase sugar levels, so it’s bet-ter to eat wheat bread. Likewise, white potatoes have “a high glycemicindex,” he says, while sweet potatoescontain more fiber, and have a lowglycemic index.

If you’re looking to lose weight, eat the same type of meals recom-mended for those who have diabetes— meals that are high in fiber andcontain a low glycemic index, saysthe doctor, as this is the type of dietthat promotes well-being and healthyhearts. It’s the practice in place attheir Weight Loss Center.

Those who are part of their weightloss program also attend group class-es once a week. This is beneficial, says Dr. Kazeem because it “makesintentions known, helps with bond-ing, and provides a little bit of peerpressure,” which encourages peopleto succeed. Generally speaking, thereare about 10-12 people in a class, he

says, and each session runs for aboutthree months.

Osteoporosis is also treated at ELKMedical. This very common conditionoften goes undiagnosed, and can causeheight loss as well as bone breaks andfractures, says the doctor. Risk factorsinclude drinking, smoking, taking cer-tain medications, and family history.Yet, osteoporosis can be treated, andthere are a variety of options availableincluding medication and injections, says Dr. Kazeem.

ELK Medical also treats thyroiddisease. This butterfly-shaped gland, located at the base of the neck, con-trols many body functions. If it isoveractive, it can cause weight loss, rapid heart beat, nervousness, anxiety, sweating, and tremors. It may be dif-ficult to sleep. The doctors at ELKMedical can treat hyperthyroidismwith medication, and some times withradioactive iodine that will slow thethyroid’s function, allowing you “tobe yourself again,” says Dr. Kazeem.Likewise, under active thyroids, which cause weight gain and slug-gishness, are also treated here.

Overactive hormones may causeexcess hair growth, and this can betreated with a laser hair removal sys-tem that’s available at the Park Slopeoffice.

Those who have trouble sleepingmay wish to visit the sleep lab at thePark Slope location. Participating in asleep study can assist those who suf-fer from sleep apnea, a condition thatimpacts the heart, says the doctor.Instead of getting a good night’s rest,

people with sleep apnea wake upthroughout the night. By participatingin a sleep study, “we can find outwhat’s going on,” says Dr. Kazeem. As a result, “It will prevent heart andlung problems” that may arise downthe road.

In addition to Dr. Kazeem, expertson staff at ELK Medical include Dr.Bhanu Iyer, internist; KarishmaSukhdeo, physician assistant and cer-tified insulin pump specialist; andJacqueline Patterson-Johnson, nursepractitioner, and certified diabeteseducator.

Kings Highway Orthopedics

So many of us have such activelifestyles — we bend, stretch, walk, and run without givingthought to the flexibilities of ourbodies. But when our physiquessuffer trauma — be it a fracture, sprain, torn meniscus or rotatorcuff — we feel pain, and oftenchange our lifestyles to avoid feel-ing this distress.

With proper treatment, howev-er, lifestyles don’t have to be cur-tailed. The highly-trained doctorsat Kings HighwayOrthopedic Associates specializein the latest orthopedic proceduresused to treat physical injuries. Infact, they are rated among the bestin our area. Kings HighwayOrthopedics was formed in 1985.Our mission from the beginninghas been to be readily available toour patients.

Dr. Todd B. Soifer, one of thestaff’s outstanding doctors, is theChief of Orthopedics at BethIsrael Medical Center’s KingsHighway Division, and is BoardCertified in Orthopedics andOrthopedic Surgery. For severalyears, he has been named “oneof the best doctors in New York”by New York Magazine.

That’s terrific to know, butthere’s more good news:“Many fractures and sprains(injuries) can be treated right atthe office,” Dr. Soifer says. Forexample, “weekend warriors”— those active individuals whospend their free time engagedin sports — sometimes findthey suffer injuries to shoul-ders, wrists, hands, knees, andankles. Yet, there’s often no

need to spend hours sittingaround the emergency room ofhospitals, as these injuries canbe treated and set in place rightat the Kings Highway office.

Even those who suffer recur-rent pain can often find relief atKings Highway OrthopedicAssociates. Certainly arthritisfalls into this category, and fortu-nately, it’s a condition the doc-tors have been able to treat witha great deal of success.

A new procedure that hashelped many patients involvesinjections of a gel or proteininto the knee, an area wherearthritis often settles. Theseinjections “refurbish lost carti-lage, and possibly decreaseinflammation,” says Dr. Soifer.Just as important, the entireprocedure can be done right atthe office, and it is covered bymost medical plans.

When it comes to all ail-ments, “We treat conservative-ly,” the doctor assures, “withnon-surgical treatment, the firstline of choice when possible.”This may include the use ofanti-inflammatory drugs andmuscle relaxants, bracing, exercise and/or physical thera-py. It is only “after all treat-ments are exhausted,” that sur-gery is recommended.

One such procedure is anarthroscopy, used to treat dam-aged tissue. A small camera,“only 3-4 millimeters wide,” isutilized in the treatment of manyknee and shoulder injuries. Thisallows repairs to be made with-out large incisions, says the doc-

tor. Best of all “recovery time ismuch more rapid.”

In addition to the expertise ofDr. Soifer, there are othernotable doctors at KingsHighway Orthopedics. Dr.Robert H. Copulsky specializesin Worker’s Compensationinjuries as well as Pediatric andGeriatric Orthopedics.

Dr. Daniel J. Morgan is thehip and knee replacement spe-cialist whose specialties alsoinclude shoulder surgery andsports medicine. He performsthe majority of hip and kneereplacements for the group aswell as most of the hip fracturesurgery at Beth Israel MedicalCenter, Kings Highway divi-sion. In addition, in the appro-priate patient, Dr. Morgan isproviding the new and state-of-the-art minimally invasive sur-gery for hip and knee replace-ments in which the surgicalscar is about one-third the sizeof the old, traditional scar.

Dr. Nicholas Harding is a

sports medicine specialist andspecializes in minimally invasivesurgery of the shoulder and knee. His specialty includes advancedskills in shoulder and rotator cuffsurgery, including arthroscopicrepairs. His specialty alsoincludes sports medicine injuriesof the shoulder and knee, as wellas arthroscopy and meniscusrepair of the knee.

In addition, these highlyskilled doctors have establisheda Physical Therapy Center attheir location.

The award-winning system tracks patientsthrough the EmergencyDepartment visit from triage todischarge, and provides patientswith discharge instructions andprescriptions. The computerizedsystem includes many features toimprove patient safety and effi-ciency such as automatic check-ing for patient drug/drug anddrug/allergy interactions, exten-

sive data collection and report-ing, clinical documentation, andorder entry and result reporting. The system also provides com-plete electronic medical recordsfor Emergency Departmentpatients.

“Our ultimate goal is to pro-vide an outstanding level of serv-ice for those who need immedi-ate urgent care,” stated Dr. Hew,Director of the EmergencyMedicine at Kingsbrook. “Wewant our community members toknow that we are doing a greatjob of providing that level ofservice with compassion andrespect.”

Kingsbrook’s NRC Pickerratings (standardized surveyresults reporting comparable infoon hospital care) for 4th Quarter2007 echo Dr. Hew’s sentiments,as ratings in cleanliness, nursecourtesy, physician courtesy andoverall quality of care were allabove state and national aver-ages.

Collective input has helpedadvance and mobilize the emer-gency division to a new level ofcare and quality. Thus far, theturnaround time for someonecoming into the EmergencyDepartment has improved signif-icantly. This in itself is a remark-able feat and one the Emergencyteam at Kingsbrook plans to sus-tain and improve upon. Throughthe coordinated efforts of theEmergency Medicine team of Dr.Phillip Hew, MD, FACEP,Director; Manuel Delgado,Administrator/FDNY Liaison,Cynthia Wright, RN, AssociateDirector and Nursing, there hasbeen a sustained improvement inthe delivery and quality of care

provided to patients that visitKingsbrook’s EmergencyDepartment.

Kingsbrook is the only volun-tary hospital within the GreaterNew York Hospital Association(GNYHA) to establish a clinicalaffiliation with the FireDepartment of New York City(FDNY). This affiliation allowsKingsbrook to offer training toFDNY paramedics in the areas ofMedication Administration, IVInsertion, EndotrachaelIntubations and PatientAssessment & History to name afew.

Located on Winthrop Streetbetween Schenectady Avenueand 49th Street in East Flatbush,Kingsbrook has been part ofCentral Brooklyn for 83 yearsand has remained committed theunique health care needs of thecommunity. As such, patientscoming to Kingsbrook’s emer-gency department will interfacewith a diverse, culturally sensi-tive team of medical profession-als, who are a direct reflection ofthe diverse community base ofCentral Brooklyn. Dr. Paul Lorenc Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is always inthe news.

There are television showsthat detail every nip and tuck. There are print ads in magazinesand on every other bus. We’veall seen photos of celebritieswho look like different people, after having plastic surgery.

But, it’s only when we con-sider having work done our-selves that we realize how littlewe really know about themany methods and proce-dures involved in thebroad category we refer toas “plastic surgery.”

That’s why it’s soimportant to go to a doc-tor who is an expert in hisfield. Dr. Z. Paul Lorenc(two convenient loca-tions: 2493 RichmondRoad, Staten Island, 718-668-1500; and 983 ParkAvenue, NYC, 212-472-2900) is that surgeon.

Dr. Lorenc is the pro-fessional who has writtena book about this subject;pioneered a revolutionarytechnique; and who worksas a Master Consultant forJohnson & Johnson. He isa researcher who knows hiscraft, and practices it with a pas-sion.

His wife, Lorraine Lorenc, isthe executive director of thepractice. She says at the core ofthe doctor’s success is his “old-fashioned values.” What thedoctor concerns himself, “firstand foremost,” she says, “is withpatients’ safety.”

The environment of the officeis designed to put people at ease, eliminate fears, and to answerall questions. In fact, Lorraine

says that she and staff membersare always with patients, fromthe time they walk through thedoor. “We talk; we answer ques-tions. This is all before they seethe doctor,” she says.

It’s the reason why, she adds, the same customers referfriends. Everyone is put at ease,as the atmosphere becomes oneof friendship, care, and concern. Before you know it, they’re talk-

ing about everything and any-thing, says Lorraine, “A goodrestaurant for lunch, a greathotel . . .”

When patients do see the doc-tor, he provides them with hisundivided attention. “You’re allhe cares about at that moment,”she says. People sometimes askLorraine how much time theyshould plan to be at the office. Her answer is, “For as long asyou allow the doctor to talk. Heloves what he does,” she says. Hetakes his time, explaining all

details, “both the benefits and therisks.” They discuss expectations, too.

“We encourage people to comefor a second visit,” says Lorraine,“and there is never a cost afterpaying the initial fee.” She con-tinues, “We say people becomelifetime members.” In this way, they are given time to think aboutwhat they want.

After all, “This is not a surgerythat people need,”Lorraine says. “It’ssomething peoplechoose, so it needs tobe a great experience.”

She notes that the“doctor’s reputationdepends on it. Hisreferrals come fromthat patient. His entirepractice is built onw o r d - o f - m o u t h . ”That’s 19 years of suc-cess at the ParkAvenue location. TheStaten Island locationopened last summer toaccommodate themany patients fromNew Jersey and StatenIslands who preferrednot to commute into

the city for appointments, saysLorraine.

Among the doctor’s manyaccomplishments include pio-neering the Endoscopic BrowLift. It’s a procedure he devel-oped that involves making tinyincisions in hair lines whichresults in a “more natural look,”says Lorraine. She notes thatwhen the brow is not lifted prop-erly, the result is “a surprisedlook and a scar.” The techniqueused by the doctor will “restorepatients to a brighter, younger,

happier face,” as it “elevates theface and makes the tired, sad, look disappear.” She notes that,“scars are minimal and incon-spicuous.”

His book, “A Little Work:Behind the Doors of a ParkAvenue Plastic Surgeon,” shat-ters a lot of myths about plasticsurgery, and provides greatinsight to those who may beconsidering it.

The office boasts the greatestand latest Titan 3-D laser byCutera, which provides patientswith an all-natural option toenhance skin tone.

Dr. Michael Mendelsohn Pediatric Otolaryngology

Dr. Michael G. Mendelsohn is afellowship-trained pediatric otolaryn-gology (ears, nose, and throat doctor)who is considered one of the top NewYork City metro area otolaryngolo-gists by Castle Connelly.

He recently became associatedwith ENT and Allergy Associates, and as a result,Dr. Sheldon Palgon,a board-certified otolaryngologist, has joined him and the staff at theBensonhurst 86th Street location. Dr.Palgon also practices at a second con-venient location in Bensonhurst: 80264th Street, Suite 3A-E.

All told, ENT and AllergyAssociates has 25 offices in the tri-state area, making it the largest ENT,allergy and audiology practice in thearea, says the doctor.

There are very few fellowship-trained ENT physicians who aretrained in pediatrics, says Dr.Mendelsohn, which means the chil-dren in our area are in especiallygood hands, as the doctor can dealwith issues that may differ from thoseassociated with adults.

He is knowledgeable about all thelatest practices and procedures, andthere are “a lot of innovations in thefield,” says Dr. Mendelsohn. Forexample, he is an expert in intracap-sular tonsillectomy, “a new methodfor removing tonsils in children withobstructed sleep disorders,” he says.Children who have obstructed sleepdisorders may have “a pause inbreathing during sleep,” or they may“sleep with their mouths wide open, resulting in snoring,” he says. Thislatest procedure, “has a lower risk, and quicker recovery time” than tra-ditional tonsillectomies. “It is safer. Itcan be performed on younger chil-dren on an outpatient basis.”

Dealing with children requires a

lot of patience, and Dr. Mendelsohnis especially patient when it comes totreating the many children referred tohim by pediatricians for ear andthroat infections. “I connect withchildren,” he says, “And I can alsorelate to the child’s parents,” many ofwhom are understandably concernedabout their child’s welfare.

Ear infections continue to besomething from which many childrensuffer, as they are often caused by“the common cold,” says Dr.Mendelsohn. “Some children aremore prone to them than others, andthe reason is not quite known,” hesays. “It could be genetic, environ-mental, their own immune systems,or allergies might play a role.”

The office features state-of-the-art care for all ear, nose, throat, andallergy disorders.

Dr. Mendelsohn received his med-ical degree from the BostonUniversity School of Medicine, partof the Six Year Accelerated LiberalArts/Medical Education Program. Hecompleted his residency inOtolaryngology at Long Island

Jewish Medical Center and SchneiderChildren’s Hospital, then completedhis fellowship in PediatricOtolaryngology at the University ofVirginia. He is affiliated with LongIsland Jewish Medical Center andSchneider Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Mendelsohn is a Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics,Fellow of the American Academy ofOtolaryngology-Head and NeckSurgery, and a Fellow of theAmerican College of Surgeons. Heholds an academic appointment ofAssistant Professor ofOtolaryngology at SUNY DownstateMedical Center. Interestingly, he hastraveled to Africa to teach and tooperate.

Dr. Sheldon Palgon has been prac-ticing otolaryngology in Brooklynand Manhattan for more than 20years. He earned his medical degreefrom the Albert Einstein College ofMedicine, then went on to completehis General Surgery Internship atMontefiore Medical Center and hisresidency training inOtolaryngology-Head and NeckSurgery at Albert Einstein College of

Neergaard Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Products

For more than 100 years Brooklynresidents have been able to rely uponNeergaard Pharmacy.

This incredible store was estab-lished in 1888, says Tom Sutherland, the manager, and it has been open 24hours a day, seven days a week, sinceWorld War I.

The staff has been there for count-less borough residents who have beenawakened in the middle of the nightby a sick child, says Tom. “Whenthey didn’t know where to turn, wewere here to support them.” I canremember depending on NeergaardPharmacy during those middle-of-the-night emergencies myself, and sohave countless neighbors.

In fact, Neergaard Pharmacy is theproud recipient of an award ofaccreditation status by theAccreditation Commission for HealthCare, Inc. (ACHC). The standards forthis award were developed by homecare and community-based providersto help companies improve the quali-ty of patient care. ACHC PresidentTom Cesar says, “The survey processleads an organization to examine itspolicies and practices continually toclarify its strengths and improve itsweaknesses.”

Accreditation is a voluntaryprocess during which healthcareorganizations submit to peer reviewof their internal policies and patientcare delivery, comparing them tonational standards. By attainingaccreditation, Neergaard Pharmacyhas demonstrated its commitment tomaintain a higher level of competen-cy and to strive for excellence in itsproducts, services, and customer sat-isfaction.

For decades, they were the justabout the only pharmacy in the bor-ough opened 24 hours. Now, Tom

says, there are a few other pharma-cies opened 24 hours, but not all havea pharmacist available in the weehours. “We are one of the few whohave a pharmacist on duty at alltimes,” he notes. And, when yourdoctor prescribes something, oddsare Neergaard Pharmacy has it. “Wecarry hard to find medications,” saysTom.

This neighborhood pharmacy hasbeen part of the community for solong, it’s a feat that’s incredible byany standards. When you considerthat in recent years, some of the largechain pharmacies have moved intothe neighborhood, it’s even moreimpressive. How do they manage todo stay in business and be so good atit?

“It’s the personalized service weprovide,” says Rosemarie Tomassetti, whose family has owned the businessfor the last 20 years. She notes thatthree generations of families havekept the Neergaard traditions going, including her family. “We provide thesame quality service” for which thepharmacy has always been noted, shesays. As a result, they’ve not onlysurvived, they’ve doubled their size.

Neergaard Pharmacy now hasthree levels. There’s a surgical show-room on the lower level that containsequipment such as scooters, wheel-chairs, walkers, oxygen equipment, lift chairs, hospital beds, bathroomsafety items such as grab bars, stools, chairs, mats, hand-held showers; andso many other healthcare productspeople need. Customers are permit-ted to try out a number of thembefore making a purchase, says Tom.For some items, there is free deliveryand set up in the home, he adds.

You’ll also find necessities such astherapeutic shoes; canes; breast-feed-

ing accessories, including bras andpumps; diabetes testing equipment;support stockings; and so muchmore.

The second floor is a fun-filledplace, stocked with a variety ofgames, puzzles, educational toys, artsand crafts, ride-on vehicles, andstuffed animals. Browse from theendless array, and when you makeyour selections, Neergaard Pharmacywill wrap your purchases for you.

This same convenience applies topurchases made in the cosmeticsdepartment. Choose from among themany skin care and fragrance giftsets, and leave with packages that areready to present as get well gifts, birthday presents, or for any otherspecial occasion. Name brands theyhave on hand include Ahava, L’Oreal,Revlon, Clinique, Lancome, Polo,Ralph Lauren, and Oil of Olay, just toname a handful. No doubt yourfavorite is among the many theycarry.

As greeting cards are also sold onthe premises, Neergaard Pharmacy isa one-stop shop. There’s no need toshop anywhere else.

When you’ve been part of thecommunity as long as NeergaardPharmacy, you’re involved in a lotmore than selling pharmaceuticalitems. One of the events NeergaardPharmacy enjoys sponsoring eachyear are baseball games in Prospect

Park, says Tom. These games seem togo hand-in-hand with the shop’sphilosophies: “We care about you,”and “Your good health is our busi-ness.”

Aside from the Fifth Avenue loca-tion, Neergaard Pharmacy has a shopat 120 Seventh Avenue, 718-857-1600. This store is open seven days aweek, from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

New York Methodist Hospital Women’s Health

New York MethodistHospital continues to offer thehighest level of advanced, com-prehensive healthcare for womenat every stage of their lives.Recently, the Hospital broughttogether all of its high qualitywomen health services throughthe establishment of the Institutefor Women’s Health. TheInstitute offers a full range ofwomen’s programs and services, including gynecologic care, diag-nostic tests for breast and gyne-cologic disease, a counseling pro-gram and genetic testing, fertilitytreatments, a prenatal care assis-tance program, a spacious fullyrenovated Birthing Center andfull range of obstetrical services, including prenatal testing, mini-mally invasive gynecologic sur-gery, gynecologic oncology, aurogynecology and reconstruc-tive pelvic surgery, and amenopause and osteoporosis pro-gram. Here, a closer look at someof the physicians at the Institute.

Natan Haratz-Rubinstein,M.D.

Advanced Prenatal Testing ForExpecting Parents

New York Methodist Hospitalrecently recruited Natan Haratz-Rubinstein, M.D., as medical

director of the Institute’sAdvanced Women’s Imaging andPrenatal Testing Center. Dr.Haratz-Rubinstein is fellowship-trained in obstetrical and gyne-cological ultrasound and has pub-lished extensively on the subject.

“It’s entirely natural forexpecting parents to have con-cerns about whether they willhave a healthy baby.Fortunately,” said Dr. Haratz.“The sophisticated prenatal testsavailable today can help expect-ing parents put worries abouttheir baby’s health to rest or, inrare cases, allow them to plan fora delivery that will best meet theneeds of the mother and her baby.Very few women need to undergoall of the prenatal tests that areavailable. Each woman’s obstetri-cian will prescribe the tests thathe or she feels are important for asuccessful pregnancy and healthybaby.”

Most tests fall into two cate-gories: laboratory tests, in whichsmall samples of blood or tissueare taken from the mother andsent to a laboratory and ultra-sound exams, which are painless, noninvasive screenings that usesound waves reflected off thebaby’s body to create images(sonograms) of the baby that canbe seen on a television-likescreen.

Marisa Mastropietro, M.D.The Urogynecology and

Reconstructive Pelvic SurgeryProgram

Dr. Marisa Mastropietro,M.D., chief of urogynecology atNYM, specializes in the evalua-tion and treatment of disorders

that impact the pelvic organs andthe muscles and connective tis-sues that support these organs. She is trained in both surgical andnon-surgical treatment of non-cancerous gynecological prob-lems. Some of the medical condi-tions that Dr. Mastropietro treatsinclude incontinence (loss ofbladder or bowel control), pro-lapse (falling of the pelvic organsincluding the uterus, vagina, bladder, uretha, or rectum), anddifficulty urinating.

“Urogynecology involvescomprehensive care of femalepelvic floor disorders in order todramatically improve a patient’squality of life,” said Dr.Mastropietro.

Katherine Economos, M.D.Gynecologic Oncology CareKatherine Economos, M.D.,

director of gynecologic oncologyat New York Methodist Hospital, specializes in the treatment ofcancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and other female repro-ductive organs. State-of-the-artsurgery, chemotherapy, interven-tional radiology procedures andradiation therapy are available atNew York Methodist.

Many reproductive organ can-cers require surgery, both to diag-nose and treat the illness. If sur-gery is needed, patients may beoffered the option of minimallyinvasive laparoscopic surgerywhen appropriate. For example, laparoscopically assisted vaginalhysterectomy, can be used to per-form hysterectomies. Dr.Economos can recommend fertil-

ity-sparing options for youngerwomen afflicted with gynecolog-ic cancer. “While their first con-cern is for successful treatment oftheir cancer, these young patientswant viable options for resumingtheir lives after treatment, and formany, this means the chance tohave a baby,” said Dr. Economos.Fertility-sparing surgery in earlyovarian cancer involves removalof the affected ovary and per-forming biopsies of areas ofpotential metastases with preser-vation of the healthy ovary anduterus.

Dr. Kaia Willekes Physical Therapy & Acupuncture

When you are in pain, you don’thave to suffer. Nor do you have tospend weeks waiting for a doctor’sappointment, or hours sitting in awaiting room.

Dr. Kaia Willekes is the efficientand effective doctor of physical ther-apy at Range of Motion PhysicalTherapy (621 Gravesend NeckRoad, 718-501-1741). She uses thebest practices of western physicaltherapy, combined with acupuncture,to keep people pain-free.

“We combine east with west,” shesays, going on to explain that in west-ern medicine, when people say theyhave back problems, doctors, “treatwhat we see.” In the east, “If youhave back pain, we may say, let’slook at your foot.”

It might sound a bit unusual tosome people, but it works, she says. After all, acupuncture has beenaround for thousands of years, and itis widely practiced in otherparts of the world. NataliaSmith is the licensedacupuncturist at Range ofMotion who is an expert inthis field.

What makes Range ofMotion unique is thatpatients would normallyhave to pay a lot of moneyfor acupuncture treatments, says Dr. Willekes, butbecause it’s combined withthe physical therapy sheoffers, it’s covered by mostmedical plans.

She has seen how well patientshave responded to the combination ofthe two methods of treatment. Onewoman was scheduled to have totalhip surgery, and had already receivedclearance from her heart doctor to doso. She came to see Dr. Willekes in

extreme pain, unable to walk. Yet,after 15 visits, “she no longer needssurgery,” says the doctor. “For now, ithas been postponed. She can walk.”

Dr. Willekes admits that thereonce was a point in time when she, herself, would have recommendedsurgery, “but now I think differently.I didn’t know better then.”

In fact, she says that, “Before Iteamed up with an acupuncturist, Iwas afraid of needles,” but now thatshe has seen the results, she stateswith confidence that when she andthe acupuncturist work together, “Wereally know how to help people withpain.”

By combining physical therapywith acupuncture, “We get betterresults, and they are faster. You don’thave to spend a lot of money, or do awhole lot of waiting.”

Dr. Willekes comes from a longline of physical therapists. Her grand-

mother, father, sisters, and aunts areall in the field. Her grandmotherpracticed in the Caribbean, and herdad “became one of the first licensedNew York physical therapists.”

It was because she was expectedto go into the field that she decided torebel. “I spent many years running

away from it,” she says. In fact, shewas so sure she “didn’t want to dowhat they did,” that she chose to runa health club instead. Interestingly, itwas while there, that she realizedphysical therapy was her calling.

“One day a woman asked me toteach her an exercise that would helpher back,” says the doctor. “It hit melike a two by four. I have to help peo-ple. This is what I was waiting for all

my life.”She went to school and

found it easy. “The jargon, the technical language — itwas all natural for me,”because it was the discourseshe had been hearing sinceshe was a kid. “I did verywell in school, and I knewright away I wanted to gointo private practice.” Sheearned her doctorate at LongIsland University.

Now one sister is a pedi-atrics physical therapist

while another is studying speechtherapy. “Together, we make thephysical therapy dream team,” shesays, although the sisters are notworking at the same facility.

Range of Motion treats patientsrecovering from surgery as well asthose who may seek traditional meth-

ods of physical therapy. Alternativephysical therapy such as relaxationmethods, designed for people suffer-ing from stress are provided as well, says the doctor.

Many of the patients who come toRange of Motion complain of backpain. Recent studies suggest that“90%” of the population experiencesback pain at some point in their lives.“We examine every patient, prescribeexercise for them, and see howthey’re doing,” she says. They receivephysical therapy, then acupuncture.“Together, we’re a powerhouse,” saysthe doctor.

%∴ &∆ΠΛΟΟΗ 6ΣΗΥΥ∆]]∆When you want top-of-the-line

dermatology care, you go to Dr.Javier Zelaya.

Dr. Zelaya has spent 10 yearsbuilding his practice, and his patientsare so pleased with his care, theyoften recommend him to others.“We’ll start with one patient, and endup treating the whole family,” saysthe doctor. He has a loyal following, based on word-of-mouth. Some ofthem travel from out of state.

They come here because theyknow they will be in good hands.Whether the purpose of their visit isfor cosmetic reasons, or for moreserious issues, they know they willreceive expert attention and care. Thedoctor performs dermatological can-cer surgery, laser, and cosmetic pro-cedures on an out-patient basis, rightin a comfortable office setting.

The Manhattan office has beendescribed as “Zen-like.” It’s a med-spa, offering a tranquil escape fromthe hurried everyday pace. It’s wherepatients come for professional med-ical and cosmetic services as well asindulgences such as waxing, facials, microdermabrasion, and spray-ontans. Maria Sierra is the aesthetician,NYS licensed in Aesthetics, Tattoo, and certified in ParamedicalCamouflage. She makes everyonefeel comfortable.

Among the many spa services arestone massages and permanent make-up. A spray-on tanner will keep yourskin looking healthy all year long. It’snon-toxic says the doctor. “It’s botan-ical and safe. It contains no dyes, andno artificial colors. It looks very nat-ural on the skin.”

Both locations offer state-of-the-art technology, including laser treat-ments for hair removal of all skintypes. The doctor has years of experi-ence in this area of expertise, includ-ing issues related to ethnic skin. Inparticular, he treats “keloids,”

described as “thick scars,” and “pseu-dofolliculitis,” ingrown hair aroundthe neck and scalp. These conditionsmay be treated with topical creams, injections, and/or laser.

Likewise, laser treatment is avail-able for conditions such as blemish-es, dark spots, red birth marks,Rosacia, and more. While it’s truethat may chronic skin conditions mayalso be treated with creams, pills, andinjections, new, sophisticated laserequipment provides “effective andsafe” treatment today, says the doc-tor. It’s great to have so manyoptions.

For example, the Xtrac laser isused for vitiligo, a skin disorderwhose characteristics include “lightspots,” says the doctor. “It often does-n’t respond to creams, but can betreated with laser.”

The Vbeam laser is designed totreat facial veins, red birthmarks, andbenign vascular lesions such ashemangiomas and port wine stains, uneven coloring of neck, warts, andmore. This is another alternate forthose who suffer from these condi-tions and haven’t responded to topi-cal creams, says Dr. Zelaya.

Coolglide and GentleLase laserhair removal systems can safelyremove hair from all parts of thebody, including face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. They also treatsensitive areas, including bikini lines.Because they are designed with cool-ing systems, using this technologyincreases patient comfort and mini-mizes adverse skin reactions, says thedoctor.

Psoriasis and acne may also betreated with laser technology.

There are a number of servicesavailable that help patients lookyounger. These include BotoxCosmetic which can soften wrinklesand lines around the eyes, forehead, mouth, and neck. Cosmetic Fillerssuch as Restylane, Juvederm, and

Radiesse may be used to “fill-in”wrinkles or plump up lips and cheeks. They may also help acne scars.

Photodynamic therapy, photofacials, and microdermabrasion pro-mote healthier skin, leaving youlooking radiant. A full line of medicalgrade skin care products are availableto keep skin healthy.

If you haven’t been to the doctor tohave a full body exam, consider doingso. Dr. Zelaya says that it’s an idealway to catch any potential problems“early,” which they can still be treatedeasily. “People may not realize condi-tions that they have,” he says.

Should a dark spot on the skinhave to be removed, it can be doneright at the office. A biopsy will beperformed, and if needed, a surgicalexcision will be conducted. “It’s one-stop,” says the doctor, saving youtime. After conditions are stabilized, yearly follow-ups will be scheduled,he says.

Torn earlobes, moles, growths, scars, and skin tags may also be takencare of.

The talented staff will see that youreceive quality care throughout yourvisit. Dolores Blanti is the officemanager who makes sure everyone isput at ease. Verna Broughton, RPA,along with the other members of thestaff, assure your comfort and well-being at all times.

The office is modern and efficient.A nearly paperless system is in place, says the doctor, allowing for accurateand up-to-date record-keeping.

Take comfort, too, in Dr. Zelaya’sexcellent credentials. He is aninternist and Board-certified derma-tologist, who after graduating from

Williams College and NYU Schoolof Medicine, completed dual residen-cies in Internal Medicine atMontefiore Medical Center andDermatology Albert Einstein Collegeof Medicine. He is a Diplomat of theAmerican Academy of Dermatologyand a Fellow of the American Societyfor Dermalogic Surgery.

Both offices are convenientlylocated by public transportation.Additional information may be foundat the websiteΖΖΖ.ςΝΛΘΖΡΥΝςΘ∴.ΦΡΠ.

The cutting edge of facial rejuve-nation has little to do with cuttinganymore.

So says Dr. William I. Kestin, aleader in the field of facial rejuvena-tion who is continuing to impresspatients and fellow clinicians withthe non-surgical facelifts he offers athis ever-broadening Sheepshead Baypractice.

Thanks to new techniques andinnovative products like Botox®,Perlane®, Restylane® andRadiesse®, one can almost turn backthe clock without having to undergo asurgeon’s blade, said Dr. Kestin.

The board certified ophthalmolo-gist has not only skillfully performedfacial rejuvenation on scores ofhappy patients, but is also so well

versed in the field that he is teachingtop doctors around the country someof the latest advanced techniques.

His appreciative students havedubbed him the “Wizard of Eyes” forhis ability to rejuvenate his patients’tear troughs, or the dark circles thatcan form under the eyes as one getsolder.

His patients, of course, say some-thing else when they see his work.

“They say ‘Wow,’ ‘Oh my God,’”he explains. “I have patients wholook in the mirror and tell me thatthey thought they’d never see thisface again.”

“The idea is to camouflage one’sage and not have it look like you hadwork done,” he said. “It’s your face, and you would want it to look as nat-

ural as possible.”Yet his skill at facial rejuvenation

is just one of the reasons hisBrooklyn practice continues tothrive.

He also has introduced theCrystalens®. It is the first implantthat can focus for near and far, usual-ly eliminating the need for any glass-es or contacts.

Besides being Board Certified inOphthalmology, Dr. Kestin is aFellow of the American College of

Surgeons and is a Clinical AssistantProfessor of Ophthalmology at NewYork University Medical School. Heis also an Attending Physician at theprestigious New York Eye and EarInfirmary.

Dr. Yekaterina Levin General Dentistry

Looking for a dentist who covers“every aspect of general dentistry?”

Look no further.Dr. Yekaterina Levin of Levin

Dental is the dentist who handles fill-ings, crowns, bridges, dentures, rootcanals, bleaching, veneers, and invis-ible braces. She welcomes childrenand adults into her practice.

If you’re one of the many peoplewho are not happy with your smile,it’s time to do something about it.Fortunately, today’s dental work canprovide what Mother Nature mayhave overlooked.

For example, veneers can beplaced over existing teeth, allowingthem to look “natural.” The first step,of course, is a discussion with thedoctor who will carefully explain the

steps involved. X-rays and impres-sions of your mouth and teeth will betaken. The veneer will be matched toreflect the color of your own teeth, sothat once it’s placed inside yourmouth, it will look like it belongsthere.

Another way to brighten yoursmile is with “invisible” braces. While they were once worn only byadolescents, today, people of all agesare wearing braces, especially theinvisible ones. In fact, some studiesindicate that more adults are seekingorthodontic treatment than everbefore.

It’s no doubt because braces areno longer associated with “steel” overthe teeth. Instead, the new invisiblebraces allow you to smile with confi-

dence while you undergo treatment. When treatment is finished, it will bea new you, with a natural, beautifulsmile, says the doctor. Ask the doctorto provide you with the details of thisinnovative treatment.

Dr. Levin was a practicing dentistin Russia before coming to theUnited States about six years ago, shesays. She worked as a dental assist, and attended the New YorkUniversity College of Dentistry. Shegraduated in 2006, and worked foranother dentist for a while. Then, justthis past February, she opened herown practice in Bensonhurst.

Here, in the high-tech office, sheperforms root canals, using computertechnology to assist with the endeav-or, she says.

Dr. Dexter AnthonyMcKenzie, MD — knownthroughout Brooklyn as “ThePeople’s Doctor” — has been atrue community servant for closeto twenty-five years.

He was born in OlympicGardens in Kingston, Jamaicaamid manifest economic andsocial challenges. Upon becom-ing a teenager, he immigrated toCentral Brooklyn in the early1970’s to join his family, some ofwhom had been evangelists in thesouthern United States duringsegregation.

There was much to overcomein Brownsville, Brooklyn duringthose times. Resources werescarce and the larger social policyof neglect was evident in the

abandoned tenements andslouched figures that sipped frombrown paper bags or noddedunder the influence of heroin andmethadone. This was the unhap-py backdrop against which ayoung man, day after day, plod-ded through the snow to the pub-lic school building—the samepublic school where a guidancecounselor tried to convince himthat he had a learning disabilityand should forego thoughts of anacademic path and opt for voca-tional training. Were it not for theteachings of his family: a workethic, self-respect, self-disciplineand hope that sprang from abelief in the power and love ofGod this young man could haveeasily gotten caught in the well-

disguised and baited snares thatdotted his path. But, fate wouldhave it that the young man wouldgraduate and earned degrees inchemistry, pharmaceutical sci-ences and medicine (MeharryMedical College) all with honors. But, Dr. McKenzie never forgothis roots, his community, hissource of strength and motiva-tion.

After completion of medical

school he returned to KingsCounty Hospital in Brooklyn fortraining in internal medicine andpediatrics. Immediately aftertraining, despite lucrative joboffers from all over the country,he went to work in Brownsville,Brooklyn. The decision was natu-ral because, through his love forhumanity and antipathy to humansuffering, he had already devel-oped a deep-seated and abidingcommitment to service to theunderserved.

Touch of Nature Natural Cosmetics and Herbs

The demand for “natural” andorganic products that promote well-being is on the rise.

Touch of Nature is the brand newBrooklyn shop that carries natural, organic, and botanical products tohelp the educated consumer stayhealthy and well.

The two owners, Aleks Shkolnikand Simon Freytor, spent an entireyear researching 500-600 differentcompanies and their products, look-ing for the very best merchandise, thekind “that would help people,” saysAleks. They researched what type ofingredients were used in their prod-ucts, where they grow, and how theygrow. After much careful considera-

tion, they selected 30-35 companieswith which to do business, he says.

These companies includeVagheggi cosmetics, New Chapterherbal products, Triple Leaf Teas, Dr.Hauschka skin line, Peter Gillhamvitamin supplements, and ReneFurterer hair care products, just toname a few.

Aleks studied at the GlobalCollege of Natural Medicine inCalifornia, he says, where he learnedthat, “people can get relief and helpthrough natural products; productsnot designed by a chemist.” Thesetypes of remedies have been aroundfor thousands of years, but “the med-ical system does not accept the natu-

ral ways of healing provided throughancient methods,” he says. As aresult, “there is a lack of information”about the benefits of these types ofproducts.

“When traditional medicineincreased widely, the power of natu-ral remedies was denied,” he says. But herbs have been around since“ancient times,” and were used toheal many ailments. “We don’t haveenough media support to let peopleknow about natural ways of healing.”
