Viking MortgageMike & Marcia England

In 1993 Marcia and I met, working together in the mortgage business. She was my favorite escrow ofcer and I was her favorite loan ofcer. Two years later we were married.

We moved to Vashon Island to raise our family in 1999. We made the decision to move here because of the excellent public school system and the small close-knit community. We wanted to give our children a sense of how we grew up. Riding bikes, walking home from the bus stop,” just come home by dinner time”… Vashon seemed like the perfect place, a throwback to the 70’s. What we got was so much more. Walking down to the park to sh,

having neighbors that really care how you are doing, not paying for pet care if you get the chance to go out of town, seeing kids grow up, go to college and give back to this amazing community.

Now that our kids are both in middle school, Marcia has come back to work with me. We are having fun together helping people buy homes and nance their dreams.

While we help people with all kinds of loans, our expertise is with new construction and we love to provide loans for those buying their rst homes. Even though our main ofce is over town and we commute together several days a week, we make more loans on Island than off.

We love being a part of the community and being involved in youth sports. We are now doing seminars on the Island sponsored by the Washington State Housing Finance Commission. These seminars qualify those who attend for special nancing that allow zero down and below market interest rates.

Thanks to the recent market downturn, there are some prices available to buy homes on the Island that are better than any we have seen since our arrival on the rock. If you’d like to know more about what your options are or ask me questions about anything, call me at 206-271-3219, E-mail me at [email protected], or Marcia at [email protected], or call us at home. We’re in the book.

Wise Up withWISEnergy

Did you know that buildings generate 40 percent of U.S. carbon emissions and consume 40 percent of our energy? Did you also know that Vashon buildings are among the worst offenders? That’s right. We’re an island of old farmhouses, drafty beach cottages and remodels that skimped on the insulation. Whether we’re heating with fossil fuels or more earth-friendly alternatives, we’re leaking energy like crazy. We can x this. We’re Vashonites. Crafty, innovative, DIY. And WISEnergy can help. We have plenty of How-To and Whom-To-Call information, to reduce our energy consumption , create a healthy indoor environment and save money through lower energy bills and available rebates. And it’s all FREE.Check out our website (www.wisenergyvashon.com); drop by the WISEnergy hut next to the Farmer’s Market (every Saturday, May through November).

Come to our Winter Workshop Series “Take Action Tuesdays”, to learn how to shrink your energy footprint starting with “HOME WEATHERIZATION 101” and don’t miss Vashon’s own CAULK THE ROCK Energy Fair in June.Stay in touch to let us know how your efforts are going. Your energy saving progress will help inform WISEnergy, inspire your neighbors and protect the planet. And won’t it be nice to put all that money you save to some better use?

The truth is that you can once again look forward to coming home instead of having that heavy, sinking feeling in your stomach. If you are sick of having the same old ghts, if you are feeling stuck in your relationship, if you feel distant, alone, disappointed, despairing or angry… there is hope. I am joyful and irreverent to the disdain of some and the amusement of many. I am loud laughter in the aisle of Thriftway. Some think that I don’t take life seriously, but finding laughter everyday will test your spirit. So don’t give up.

Like many Islanders, there are a number of hats on my head and someday I shall wear a red one. I am the proud daughter of a Navy Chief and I married a Pirate. I am the proud mother of Pirates who joined the Navy.

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of living on an Island in the sun, but found an Island in a Rainforest. Because of moving, I had no sense of community, so this community is precious. I am very pleased to walk most anywhere on Vashon and greet a friend.

I have felt the power of prayer and love God’s sense of humor. And I subscribe to the immortal words of Oscar Wilde, “Be yourself, because everyone else is taken!”

Allison ShirkVashon Grantwriter

In 2010, I wrote 97 grants and raised $743,900 for our Island’s nonprot organizations – that’s the equivalent of 2 grants going out and $14K coming into our community’s chest each week. This funding developed sustainable operating support for the Senior Center and Vashon Youth and Family Services, designed and readied for construction the outdoor skate park, kick-started the Vashon Fields Capital Campaign, developed a model early learning system

at the PlaySpace, provided vital support to homeless families, replaced the windows at Pt. Robinson, and provided support, equipment, and a new outdoor stage for the arts programming at Vashon Park District. The funds are also going to preserve ten acres of a rare sphagnum bog on the Island, and start the reconstruction of the boathouse at Pt. Robinson.

I feel honored to be able to help make things happen on this amazing Island and to help nonprots get the funding they need to do their good work. My goal is to work with other Island nonprot organizations on Vashon too. I know there are non-prots that are struggling and grant support would provide them the cushion they need to keep doing what they do best.

I have over ten years experience writing grants and providing consultation to non-prot organizations. I have lived on Vashon since 2001 and I have served on the Vashon Maury Island Community Council and the Vashon Healthy Community Network. I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Vashon Rotary. I also work with organizations off Island, in Seattle, and around the world, including AHOPE for Children, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Kosova Addis, and Cambodian Women’s Health Organization.

My two children are Audrey and Joseph and my work is all about making this community a great place for them to grow and thrive. Non-prot organizations can reach me at www.vashongrantwriter.com. I am also a singer-songwriter. My music is available at www.myspace.com/allisonshirkmusic. At this time, I am only working with 501 c3 non-prot organizations and special districts.

JUST PASSING THROUGH TRAVEL Specializing in small group travel to Argentina and EcuadorWhile I’ve made my home on Vashon since the early

‘70’s, I’ve traveled widely in South America and now, after almost 50 years of travel ‘south of the border,’ I’m offering small group tours for people who want to step out of their comfort zone, connect and travel to places not overrun by tourists. Pack up your curiosity and let’s experience another culture!

From colonial cities to remote jungle settings, from Tango bars to indigenous street food, you’ll get a taste

and feeling for a place as an experiential traveler that you won’t get from a tour bus.

Tressa AzpiriWho is who on and off Vashon? I am an ‘Island hopper’ grown on Vashon and currently living in Jamaica. I visit Vashon as often as I can as my roots run deep and strong bonds of love keep me connected (Facebook also plays its part). As a Vashon child, I ran in the wet sands of low tide, picked strawberries, pulled abundant pranks on teachers and neighbors and mostly had a fabulous time. I grew two of my own children with many others tugging on my skirt as I ran Puddle Stompers school for 20 some years on Bank Road. The Bush administration came along introducing and in icting ‘No Child left behind’ and I knew my days of Puddle Stompers had conveniently ended simultaneously with parenthood probation as I launched Jasmine and Jarem to University.

What next? I co-authored Sign To Learn, American Sign Language in the Early Childhood Classroom, with Kirsten Dennis. We published the Puddle Stompers sign language curriculum through Red Leaf Press. I get very positive feed back from teachers that use this book in their classrooms. Next I sold my Vashon home and up and moved to the Island of Jamaica surprising myself as much as everyone else. I teach a violence prevention program in six schools of Saint Mary, live on a 10-acre farm and provide two guest houses with kitchens and bathrooms for guests wanting to experience Jamaica ‘more Jamaican style’ rather than an ‘all-inclusive.’

I know the area and share amazing sights and opportunities off the normal tourist beat and track at a comfortable Jamaican rate. You can see images on my Facebook page. Contact me via email if you would like to plan a family trip at: [email protected]. I love my visits to Vashon and give thanks for the warm welcome and deep nourishment I absorb and carry back to Jamaica with me.

Emily GrahamKlahanie Nursery School

Emily (Emmy) Graham moved to Vashon Island with her husband Alex (a returning Vashon born and raised native) and sons Finley and Kai. With the birth and passing of their daughter Nora four years ago, Emmy found continued healing through nature, writing and celebration of family.

Nora plays an active role in her family’s life and a catalyst for intentional living and practice, as well as an ever-present appreciation for dear Fin, Kai and all children in her care.

Because of these important personal growths, Emmy is even more committed to the enrichment of children’s empathy, as well as family and community connection with her work as Director/Lead Teacher for Klahanie Nursery School here on Vashon as well as Grief Doula outreach for other families who experienced the death of a child.

Hestia RetreatWe are Pam Bredouw and Valerie Manusov, co-founders of an in-progress project called Hestia Retreat. Eleven years ago, Valerie envisioned a serene space where women could leave their everyday lives and stay overnight for quiet and healing re ection. Last year, Pam joined her in developing this project, and Hestia Retreat began to manifest on Vashon. Seventy women, most from Vashon Island, are currently involved in supporting the retreat center’s creation. Our vision has broadened from a place of sanctuary to include a space for community; women will be welcome to come for solitude or for connecting with others, particularly to engage in small groups of their own making or as part of larger planned seminars, featuring speakers who work in areas important to women. We are incorporated as a non-pro t in Washington State, have created a Board of Directors, and are currently completing our paperwork to be a tax exempt entity. We welcome your involvement in our project, a description of which can be foundat hestiaretreat.com. Let us know if you would like to be on our email list:[email protected] or [email protected]. We are in search of donated land and endowments and hope to hear about ideas you may have to help us to bring Hestia Retreat to life.

Since 1995, The Harbor School has taught young people to be scholars and helped them grow into conscientious, capable members of their

community. The backbone of this success always has been our thoughtful, engaged faculty who have created our experiential curriculum and have

forged strong relationships with their students. Their differences in personality, style, and life experience all lend texture to the students’

experience, yet they are unified in their belief that addressing the whole needs of a child--academically, socially, and physically--leads to success

for those students and their families. The Harbor School faculty is leading a forward-thinking school program that is successfully preparing young

people for the world in which they live.

PsychotherapistI have lived on Vashon since

1990, and I am grateful for the quality of life the island has offered both personally and professionally. With 2 teens and a preschooler at home and my work as a therapist on the island for the last 12 years, I have a full range of experience in the lives of children growing up here, as well as the challenges parents face. I have a deep consuming passion for horses, and they have always been a vehicle for my personal growth, keeping me in touch with the wild of nature and the beauty we are surrounded by.

Being a therapist allows me to bring my truest self to my work and, I am grateful that I have found a profession I love. As I watch my clients explore and learn about themselves, I too experience my own self exploration and learning. With over 20 years in the profession, all of the clients I have worked with contribute to my growing knowledge about human nature and change. As a therapist I bring my values of honesty, openness and truth to my practice. My style is straightforward and pragmatic and I have an intuitive, playful, and compassionate way of connecting that puts people at ease.

Danielle McCutcheonStringThyme Music & Herbs

Hello Vashon, Danielle McCutcheon here, proprietrix of StringThyme Music & Herbs. I am your local source for high quality violin and viola teaching, musical performance, and herbal medicine. I love living and working on the island, and to celebrate this La Niña winter I’m offering a few specials:

❖ Whirlwind Health Assessment: For a limited time, receive a 45-minute consult for $25 and two weeks of herbal medicine for the price of one.

What’s involved in the health assessment? It’s basically an interview where you tell me what your concerns are and I get details regarding your health history, diet and lifestyle routines, then offer suggestions and prepare appropriate herbal medicines for you. It is completely condential. Many clients have found relief and resolution of symptoms related to eczema, allergies, menopause, acute aches and pains, sleep difculties, and more. I work with children, teens, adults, and seniors.

❖ Rainy Day Music Lessons: Start learning to play violin or viola now, and you’ll be ready to play at those family picnics by summer! Sign up for 4 lessons and receive one free.

I rmly believe it is never too late to start playing a musical instrument, and offer private and group lessons. My teaching approach is very individualized, and I truly enjoy seeing kids and adults alike nd their unique musical expression while gaining the condence to perform.

❖ Thyme for Love: Hire the String Thyme Duo (violin & viola) for your wedding ceremony and ‘hear the love’! Book us by March 31st and receive one ceremony package for $275 (up to 1.5 hr ceremony plus a jar of SweetThyme honey).

StringThyme Music provides performance by some of the best professional musicians in the Pacic Northwest. I perform as soloist, and you also have the choice of duo, string trio, or string quartet. Find us on the web at www.StringThyme.com, or contact me directly at 206-462-0835 or [email protected] am also thrilled to announce that my herbal teacher and clinical mentor, Isla Burgess, will be coming here from New Zealand to offer a two-day workshop at my place.

❖ People and Plants, Health and Healing A Weekend Intensive with Isla Burgess June – 11-12, 2011

From Isla: “I will focus on the digestive system, because it impacts so much on how we think, how resilient we are, in fact every part of our body. As we nourish and fertilise the earth so our plants will grow, so we need to lay the foundation for a healthy digestive process. No doubt we will be discussing diets and food, mostly around meal times.

I am known for my Case-Based approach to understanding herbal therapeutics; I will be bringing my own examples but we can also draw on Cases from the group. I hope you will join us for an informative, exploratory, sharing and hopefully an energizing and stimulating weekend.”

Contact Danielle to sign up.Here’s to a healthy, prosperous year for all of you, and the bees too! See you soon, Danielle.

Ray AspiriGrand Marshal, 2010 Vashon Strawberry Festival

Who is Who on Vashon Island? Ray Aspiri moved his young and growing family to Vashon Island in 1965 with his wife, Edith. The Aspiris now reside part time in Seattle’s Belltown, and part time on Vashon, in Glenacres.

They are active in St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Vashon School District, Vashon Youth and Family services (Edith co-founded) and Vashon Community Care Center. Ray also supports VAA, PIE, Vashon Chorale, Vashon Opera, Vashon Land Trust and several other Island organizations. Ray was Vashon’s 2010 Grand Marshal for Strawberry Festival.

Off ‘the rock’ Ray has been active in the business world running several companies including Credco Of America, Color Control, Tempress, Inc., and Tempress Technologies.

This past year, Ray was a major player in establishing a new Catholic Parish in downtown Seattle, Christ Our Hope. The parish is located at 2nd and Stewart inside the Josephinum (formerly the New Washington Hotel, built in 1907). The parish is to serve residents of the condos and low income housing in the core of the city.

Ray continues to be very involved with his children and grandchildren, attending many sporting events, ballet recitals, concerts and tea parties for Grandpas. His six children all have children and the clan continues to grow.

This coming summer, the entire Aspiri clan will visit The Basque homeland of his parents in Spain.

a stronger thread in the rich weaving that is Vashon life.”

Aaron JonesIsland Forestry

Hi, my name is Aaron Jones, you may have seen me swinging from a rope in a tree or maybe high in a tree checking out the view across the sound. That’s because I have the job every kid dreams about – I climb trees for a living.

I grew up in Michigan – also a place full of trees – but now have 5 beautiful acres on Cemetery Road. I have been climbing trees for 7 years now and love every minute of it. The island is full of trees that have to pruned / removed before they fall on something or maybe just topped for a view of the sound – and what a view it is from the trees. The only thing better than the views is getting to know and talk to my neighbors personally. I really enjoy getting to know other islanders and their many, many, hobbies – this is a unique place. Sure, you could call one of those big expensive companies from off the island, but why do that when there is a licenced ,insured, experienced tree company right here on the island. Whether you want your trees pruned, your view cleared, or have a giant r growing through your deck right next to your house that you want removed – I’ve done that.

So give me a call. I call my little business Island Forestry and I would like to meet you and talk about your trees, whatever they may need.

Alex DeHaven, Little Foot StructuresGrowing up and working construction within the Vashon community, I

have learned Islanders desire low-impact construction. This stems from a carbon conscious persona that has been rooted on this island for decades. In keeping with the demand, I’m eager to announce that Little Foot Structures, LLC. is now building unique mini-structures such as: cabins, cottages, sheds, play houses, dog houses, carports, gazebos, chicken coops, and anything else one could imagine. A variety of building material choices are available to accommodate customers’ style preferences on siding, roofs and trims. All log structures will be made from local Vashon growth and treated with fossil fuel-free acrylic products only.

I would like to thank the residents of Vashon for supporting me in my efforts to provide natural, reliable structures.

Vashon Wilderness Program

The Vashon Wilderness Program provides nature immersion programs that ignite a deep relationship between self, community and the natural world.

Our unique mentoring approach celebrates individual gifts and curiosities through scientic study, ecological inquiry, awareness practices, and native skills and wisdom, empowering students to continue their learning adventure beyond our programs and into the landscape of their lives.

Our intensive program for kids ages 4-12 years meets weekly throughout the school year at Camp Sealth. Our school-based programs meet at Chautauqua, and the Harbor School. New this year will be adventures for teens, and an introductory course for adults on some of our core routines for deep nature connection.

Join us for our Open House events at Camp Sealth - March 5th and April 16th – for fun, adventure and a taste of our creative mentoring.

And please bring your family and friends to the annual Tall Tales Festival on February 5th where we celebrate the storyteller in each of us! Proceeds support our non-prot organization. For more information about us, please visit our website: www.vashonwildernessprogram.org or call (206) 438-3525.
