Johnny Rockets is Famous for four things:

Common Policies ●Breaks - Breaks are only for employees working double shifts. All breaks (smoking, eating or between
shifts) must be approved by a manager. No one is to go on break for any reason without a manager's approval.
Asking for a break does not mean you will get one. ●Clock in, clock out policy - You must clock in after you are dressed in “full uniform” and ready to work.
Do not clock in if you are not dressed, if you are missing a piece of your uniform, if your uniform is unclean
or if you are not ready to work. Do not clock in earlier than your scheduled time. If you are scheduled for 10
you must clock in at 10 (not 9:50), unless you have a manager's permission to clock in earlier. You must
clock out after you have your side work completed and checked, before you go to cash out. ALWAYS
REMEMBER TO CLOCK OUT.
●Schedule requests - Schedule requests are to be made no later than Tuesday before the upcoming week.
Example: If you need a day off on Friday next week, you are to make your request no later than Tuesday of
the current week. Remember this is a request, not guarantee. ●Switching shifts - To switch a shift or pick up someone’s else shift you must have a manager's approval.
●Lateness - If you are going to be late (even 1 minute), you must call and let a manager know.
●Cell Phone - NO cell phones are allowed to be turned on while you are clocked in and dressed in uniform.
●Pre-bussing - Whenever guests are finished with their plates, remove them from the table immediately.
Used napkins and/or trash on the table needs to be cleared as well. ●Drink refills - Johnny Rockets offers free refills on soft drinks, iced tea, and lemonade. Be sure to keep
drinks full, and NEVER hold a drink from the top two inches of the glass.
If a guest’s glass is half empty, you should offer a refill.
Side work and Teamwork
5
Side work - Along with taking tables, servers are given select duties to perform throughout their shift. These
tasks are crucial to the performance and cleanliness of the restaurant, and will affect how well and how timely
you and your coworkers can perform your jobs. Always make sure to keep up on your side work as needed
and help out others with their side work. Side work is a part of your every day duties and is as important as waiting tables. At Johnny Rockets servers have three types of side work:
1.Opening side work - These are tasks to get the restaurant ready for the day.
2. Running side work - These are the tasks that you have to do throughout your shift.
3.Closing side work - These tasks are done to clean and stock the restaurant after each shift. Teamwork
TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More. At a busy place such as Johnny Rockets, team work is a very important ingredient. It is a big factor in
providing good customer service and creating a dining experience that is memorable. We work together, learn
from each other and feel motivated. As a result, the work process becomes more fun and less frustrating.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO HELP OTHERS OR ASK OTHERS TO HELP YOU
As a team at Johnny Rockets we do everything together.
If you are pre-bussing your table and the table next to yours in another server’s section needs to be pre-bussed
as well, be friendly and pre-bus that table at the same time! If you see food ready sitting on the expo line go
ahead and run the food (even if it’s not for your table). If you see empty glasses waiting to be refilled, go
ahead and do it even if it’s not for your table, etc. Remember when you help others, they will help you.
Day Two
Sequence of service steps
1. Greet the guest/ Take the order You must greet the table within 30 seconds of the time they are seated.
Say:” Hi! Welcome to Johnny Rockets!” “My name is____ and I will be your server today. Our shake of the
day is___ and our shake of the month is____. Would you like to try one of these or start off with something to
drink?”
a) Take the drink/shake order - Offer them a flavor for their soda or a deluxe shake or malt. If the
guests are ready, you may take their entire order, otherwise state you will be right back with their drinks.
b) Serve the beverages - Twirl straws. Present doily, spoon, and water for shakes, malts and floats. c) Take and place the food order - If you have not already done so, take the guests food order. Here
you have a chance to up-sell by adding extra-extras on items. Ask:” Would you like cheese on your original?” or “Would you like to add bacon (mushrooms, grilled onions, chili) to your burger?” A guest will typically order three items: a hamburger or sandwich, a starter, and a beverage. If a guest missed
one of these, for example fries, your next question should be: “Would you like to add an order of fries to your hamburger/sandwich?”
2. Serve the food Shakes/malts/floats should always come before starters, and starters should always come before hamburgers or sandwiches. a) Prepare and serve the starters - Pour ketchup on the plate in the shape of a smiley face. b) Serve the sandwiches - Remember: HOT FOOD ALWAYS HAS PRIORITY OVER EVERYTHING
ELSE. Check the order against the cook’s ticket to ensure that all of the items have been prepared as ordered
6
before you take it. Always serve the open side of the hamburger facing the guest. As you deliver the food,
check the table to see if refills on beverages are needed.
3. Perform the “two bite check-back” and pre-bus the table Ask: Is everything delicious? May I bring you anything else? Ensure that the guests are pleased with the food and drinks. Pre-bus the table. A perfectly pre-bused table
would only have beverages left when the guests leave.
4. Dessert and check delivery When the guests are finished with their food offer them dessert. Pick your favorite and ask if they would like
to try it. If dessert is declined politely give the check to the guest. Say: “I will collect this whenever you are
ready”. Let the guest know you are taking the payment.
• Say your goodbyes and thank the guests “ Thank you! Come back and see us again”. “ Have a nice day”.

Secret shoppers Secret shoppers are people who visit the restaurant posing as normal customers. They evaluate the service
they receive and score the server, restaurant, and managers. Johnny Rockets’ owners and managers use these
reports to ensure their employees are providing quality service to their customers.
The servers are being graded on their performance as well as the cleanliness of the restaurant. If the server scores 95% or better and they danced, they will receive $100. Guest Interaction- Just serving food is not enough for our guests. Dancing is the key element in creating a fun, family atmosphere
that people will enjoy and make them want to return. Some ways to increase interaction with guests includes
asking the children and others dance with you, pick someone out and acknowledge them during a dance, dance
on the ledge, talk to the customers, etc.
Know your managers Managers are here to help you do your job correctly. If you need help, ask them! If you are not doing
something correctly, they will tell you. It is important to know all of the managers at your location!
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!
Hello!
Welcome to the U.S. State Departments Work and Travel USA Cultural Exchange Program. Cultural Homestay International
(CHI) will be your program. My name is Elisa Pyle and I’m your Program Coordinator. I am available to assist you with any
questions you might have during your program. My goal is for us to maintain good communication with one another and you
should be checking your email frequently. Here are a few very important things to remember.
-As soon as you purchase your plane tickets log onto www.sevis.org (You do this by using your last name and DS number
found on your DS2019 form) enter your complete travel arrangements as soon as you make your flight reservations. You
only need to input the flight information to your FINAL DESTINATION and be sure and include how you are getting to your
employers from the airport and the date & time of arrival at your employer. YOU MUST ALSO NOTIFY YOUR EMPLOYER AT
LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR ARRIVAL!
When you fly make sure to keep the following important documents with you at all times while traveling:
• Passport • J-1 visa • DS-2019 • CHI Student Handbook
• Arrival Instructions Letter • Sponsorship Letter from CHI • Job Offer
When you travel you should keep the following documents in your carry-on bag and with you at all times:
Make sure to not carry large amounts of cash with you. You do have to have access to at least $1000 when you arrive.
This does not mean to bring it all in cash. It can be a combination of traveler’s checks, bank card, some cash, etc.
-After you arrive in the USA, please login to SEVIS again to show proof of your arrival. The U.S. State Department requires
you to do this within 3 days of entering the U.S. You will then need to input your 1-94 number and housing address of where
you will be living in the U.S. You are required to log into SEVIS and update your information. The US Government must know
where you live at all times.
Please remember to use your home address in your home country (NOT your University address) when filling out all
paperwork with your new employer. This is very important and ensures that your employers can forward any
important employment related documents to you by mail after you return home. DO NOT use your U.S. housing
address as documents will not be forwarded to you. When your program is complete and you are preparing to return
home, it is very important that you give your employer 2 self-addressed stamped envelopes also.
-You must be VALIDATED in SEVIS and be in the U.S. for at least 10 business days BEFORE going to apply for your Social
Security card. If you do not, it will delay or prevent you from receiving you SS number.
To check to see if you are validated, go back into the SEVIS system 3 days after you validated yourself. An "S" in the status
field indicates your successful validation. If you require support, please contact CHI at [email protected] or calling CHI at 1-
800-432-4643.
Second Jobs – You are not allowed to work or start training at a 2nd job without CHI permission. Contact me for details.
Monthly Reports you are required to complete an online questionnaire each month of your program. An email will be sent
to you monthly requesting you to log onto SEVIS to complete the questionnaire. Be sure and check your email
frequently. Your program will be at risk if you do not complete the required monthly questionnaire.
Your employer would like to remember you, so we encourage that you bring a small gift from your home country such as: a
key chain, picture postcard, magnet, chocolates, etc. This will certainly bring a smile to their face and it is a nice gesture they
won’t forget!
I would like to wish you a wonderful cultural exchange program filled with unforgettable memories to cherish. Please be sure
to take plenty of pictures and keep a journal. We are very excited about your arrival in the United States of America and I
look forward to working with you to make this a truly life changing and meaningful experience!
Warm Regards,
Elisa Pyle - [email protected]

before you receive your first full paycheck! Do not bring $1000 in
cash with you, it is not safe. You want to have some cash, some
traveler’s checks and/or a bank card that will work here that you
can access the rest of your money with. If you do arrive with a large
amount of cash, make sure to open a bank account within the first few days so that you may keep your money safe.
Make your housing arrangements in advance. Housing is getting
booked fast so please make your arrangements TODAY!! There is a
list of 3 housing choices at the end of this document. It is very
important that you make your arrangements before your arrival into
the United States. You may want to contact the other students to
arrange your housing together. This will reduce your housing expenses if you are splitting the cost.
Upon Arrival in the United States
• When you enter the US, you will receive your I-94 stamp in your
passport. You then must go online and print out your I-94
number and keep it in your passport at all times. You will need
this number to validate in SEVIS and to apply for your social
security card. This is an extremely important number so please
put it in a safe place so that you know where it is at all times.
• Report any lost or damaged luggage before leaving the
airport. You will need to give them the mailing address of your
employer if you have lost your luggage. The address is printed
on your job offer.
• Since you are responsible for your own housing you will be
responsible for making all arrangements. Please make sure if
you arrive late in the evening that you have a place to stay.
There are many hotels near the airport where you can stay.
Please make sure you know where you are going to be staying
when you arrive. From the airport, you can take a taxi. Please
remember that you will need to be prepared for these extra
costs. Please do NOT go to the employer with your luggage,
they do NOT assist with housing. Make sure to find the most
affordable transportation to your housing.
• Call your family to let them know that you have arrived safely.
• Validate yourself in SEVIS www.sevis.org within 3 days of
entering the U.S.
• Notify employer by phone after you arrive to Myrtle Beach, SC to verify your scheduled start date and time.
10 Days after Arrival
You will not be able to apply for your Social Security card for 10 days
after you enter the U.S. providing you registered in SEVIS right after
arriving.
Make sure you put your employer's mailing address on the form. If
you do not put your employer's address, your Social Security number may not reach you. The address can be found on your job offer
Your employer's payroll department must also have confirmation
that you have applied for your social security card within 10 to 17
days after registering in SEVIS. When you apply for your social security
number, ask for a receipt, then keep this with you and provide a
copy to your employer, which verifies you have applied for your number.

Monthly Check-Ins with CHI
Each month (30 days from the date that you validated in SEVIS) you
are required to log in at www.sevis.org and fill out your monthly
report. Please feel free to share stories and photos with us both good
and bad, we are here for you and want to know how you are doing and what you are experiencing and learning.
Make sure to check your email often as we may send you information about trips, activities in your area, contests, and so on.
When Filling Out Paperwork for Your Employer
Please remember to use your home address in your home country
when filling out all tax paperwork (W-4 and I-9 forms) with your new
employers. Also when you leave your employer, make sure to leave
1 or 2 self-addressed envelopes with your complete address back
home on it, so that they may send you your last paycheck or tax papers.
Practical Information
Cell Phones: Some students may want to carry a cell phone. There
are many phone options. Many cell phone companies require a
contract and monthly payments. However, you may wish to
purchase a phone without a contract, using pre-paid minutes. This is
a practical, short-term solution and you do not pay monthly rates.
Pre-paid phones are available at a variety of electronic retail outlets,
including Walmart. In this agreement, you are able to purchase
prepaid minutes and do not have to pay a monthly rate. You can
ask an associate that works at the cell phone counter to help you
out. They are very kind and will help you pick the best choice. Keep
in mind that international calls from your own personal cell phone
can be very expensive. If you do get a cell phone make sure to log into www.sevis.org and enter in what your cell phone number is.
Other Wireless Technologies: Skype is also an inexpensive option for
you to use to speak with your family. You can add some dollar
credits to your account and call from your computer. The calls can be made internationally with your computer or phone.
