Why international peace collapsed by 1939By:

Anunth Krishna ChariJash HutheesingKresha SewaniAkanksha SapruHow the Peace treaties affected international peaceMany of the Peace Treaties were seen as unfair. When countries violated the terms of the peace treaties, other countries were divided on whether or not it was alright for them to do so.Some members thought that aggressors should not be punished because they were forced to abide by unfair treaties. Others felt that the treaties were fair and that the aggressors should be punished. This made it hard to present a unified front against the aggressors.

Countries had drastically varying perspectives on whether the Treaties imposed on the defeated nations were fair. They judged aggressors actions based on whether the treaties had been fair to the aggressors or not.

Countries which thought the treaties were unfair did not try to stop an aggressor.A good example of this is when Germany remilitarized the Rhineland and Britain did not do anything. Britain felt that the Treaty was too harsh and felt bad for Germany. It let Germany disobey the Treaty. The division of countries opinions presented a divided front against aggressors so aggressors were not punished enough.how the league of nations affected international peaceThe League of Nations ended up encouraging aggressors during the 1930s.This happened for several reasons including:Divided front against aggressors (already covered)Ineffective SanctionsTreaties (already covered)Aggressors saw how weak the League was and felt more confident ignoring it.Did the league encourage aggression?Short Answer: YesLong Answer: The League of Nations started failing around the 1930s. What happened seemed to be a cycle of aggressors ignoring the League and others learning to do the same.League Very WeakAggressors saw weakness and ignored the League.Other aggressors saw how nations ignored the league and felt more confident doing the same. How did the League start the cycle of increased aggression? As you just saw, the League started the cycle by letting countries ignore it. How did this happen? The Leagues members were not loyal enough to support it and supply their armed forces. This meant that military sanctions were not possible. The US refused to support economic sanctions so the League had no way of stopping aggressors.Nations also became more aggressive because of the depression. The depression led to the election of more radical governments. Nations also thought that the solution to their economic problems was to conquer more territory. Italy wanted to take its peoples minds off the depression by going to war.The great depression and its global impact on peaceThe Great Depression started because of the Wall Street Crash in the US. The depression soon spread around the globe because the US was a major trading partner for many countries and very significant in the global economy. When countries entered a depression the following happened.More radical forms of government came to power.Countries saw war as a way to take their peoples minds of the depression.Countries felt that conquering new territories would boost their economy.

More radical forms of government included the Nazis. The Nazis acted as if the Treaty of Versailles didnt exist and did the opposite of many things it said.Italy, in particular, wanted to take its peoples minds off the depression by going to war.Japan, in particular, felt that conquering parts of Manchuria would be a big boost to their economy.German Marks were used as building blocks due to inflationWhy did international peace collapse by 1939?Since the victorious countries did not agree on whether they were too harsh to the defeated nations, a divided front was presented to aggressors. The League of Nations had many weaknesses. Once one country disobeyed it, other countries followed suit. Soon, no one payed attention to the League and went about doing their own thing.Their own thing was war. The Great Depression hit the world so badly that countries conquered territories to either improve their economy or take their peoples minds off the depression.Thank you
