I'm in love alright, with my crazy beautiful life.

With the parties, the disasters, with my friends all pretty and plastered.

Every night we're down to go out,

Waking up on a different couch.

Till the next night, on the next flight.

Yeah, I guess we're doing alright.

Oh oh oh

We're falling in love

Oh oh oh

Till the sun's comin' up.

Oh oh oh

Just livin' the life Oh oh oh

What is poetry? Poetry is a short literary art in which

language is used to evoke emotion or tell a story.

Because it is so short….○ Rich with language and emotion○ Each word carries more weight

FORM The way a poem looks on the page is called its form. Poems are written in lines, which may or may not be complete sentence. In some forms of poetry, lines are grouped into stanzas.

If lines in a stanza have a regular, repeated pattern, the poem has a structured form. Poems that have no regular pattern are called free verse poems

SPEAKER The speaker of the poem is the voice

that relates the story or ideas of the poem. The speaker may be the poet, speaking directly to the reader, or the speaker may be a character or voice created by the poet.

The voice may include the use of dialect, a form of language spoken in a certain place by a certain group of people. The poet may also use idioms to make the speaker’s voice more realistic.

SOUND

Because most poems are meant to be read aloud, poets choose and arrange words to create sounds that appeal to the listener.

Four techniques that poets use to create sound are rhyme, rhythm, repetition, and onomatopoeia.

IMAGERY Imagery is language that appeals

to the reader’s five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Writers often use imagery to draw readers into a scene.

Think about the phrase “feather clouds” or “blistering sands.” Do the images remind you of places you’ve been or experiences you’ve had?

Page 31: Why poetry ? Or, words that shimmer or what IS THIS?

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Writers may use figurative

language when they choose words and phrases that help readers picture ordinary things in new ways.

We will focus on four main types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, analogy, and personification.

The Tropics of New York by Claude McKay

Bananas ripe and green, and ginger root Cocoa in pods and alligator pears,And tangerines and mangoes and grape fruit, Fit for the highest prize at parish fairs,

Sat in the window, bringing memories of fruit-trees laden by low-singing rills,And dewy dawns, and mystical skies In benediction over nun-like hills.

My eyes grow dim, and I could no more gaze; A wave of longing through my body swept,And, hungry for the old, familiar ways I turned aside and bowed my head and wept.
