At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent. The First World War was over.
Nearly 9 million soldiers were killed during the First World War.

Why poppies?Why poppies?
Since 1921, people have worn poppies as a symbol to remember the sacrifices of those who died in conflicts.
Some of the worst fighting of the First World War took place in northern France. The poppy was the only thing which grew in the aftermath of the complete devastation.

We remember the whole generation of men that was wiped out – so we could enjoy our freedom – many with no known grave.
