DESCRIPTION

On May 3rd, C/D/H hosted a webinar with New Horizons Computer Learning Centers on SharePoint and Project Server – and why they are the right tool combination for managing your projects—no matter how big—or how small. Attendees learned an overview of Microsoft Project and SharePoint, Project Server architecture, SharePoint and Project integration, and reporting. David Tappan, a SharePoint consultant at C/D/H, also provided his insights on Microsoft Project from a SharePoint administrator’s perspective, including adding Project Server to your existing farm and how Project Server changes SharePoint administrative procedures. View C/D/H’s SharePoint and Project Server slide deck and find out why Project Server, combined with SharePoint, can be useful in almost every project management office. C D H Why Project Management

• Project and Portfolio Management helps organizations gain visibility and control across all work, enhancing decision-making, improving alignment with business strategy, maximizing resource utilization, and enhancing project execution

Page 13: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Microsoft Project Server 2010

• Microsoft Project Server 2010 builds upon the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 platform

• Provides a basis for Project Web App pages, site administration, project workspaces, and authentication infrastructure for Project Server users.

• Provides portfolio tracking and planning

Page 14: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H SharePoint

• What is SharePoint? – Microsoft SharePoint 2010 makes it easier for

people to work together – SharePoint 2010 helps you share ideas and

expertise and find the right business information to make better decisions

• Isn’t that what project management is all about?

Page 15: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Collaboration

• Connect teams with SharePoint Sync• Built on SharePoint Server 2010• Better time and status reporting• Easily create reports and dashboards• SharePoint Collaboration

Page 16: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server

• The major difference between Project Server 2010 and Office Project Server 2007 is that 2010 requires Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 to be installed on the computer running Project Server and on all Project Web App servers within a SharePoint farm.

Page 17: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Requirements

• The 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2

• Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise version

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft IE 8, or Microsoft IE 9 for Microsoft Project Web App user access

Page 18: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Requirements

• For farm deployment, database servers must be 64-bit Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 and Cumulative Update 2, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP3

Page 19: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server 2010 Architecture

Page 20: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Architecture

• The front-end tier includes third-party applications, Microsoft Project Professional, and Project Web App.

• Project Web App uses Internet Explorer to display Microsoft ASP.NET 3.5 pages.

• Project Web App pages use Project Server Web Parts that communicate with the PSI and use standard SharePoint Server 2010 Web Parts.

Page 21: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Architecture

• All Project Server data is stored in Microsoft SQL Server databases.– Draft – Published – Archive– Reporting

• In Project Server 2010, all of the Project Server databases can be located on separate servers.

Page 22: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D HIntegration Between Project

Server and SharePoint

• Project Server 2010 is tightly coupled with SharePoint tasks lists.

• In Project Server 2010, you have option to create a fully managed portfolio composed entirely of entries in a SharePoint task list.

• If you start with a Project 2010 file you can generate ongoing, two way sync between the project and a SharePoint task list.

SharePoint Administrator Perspective

Page 24: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D HIntegration with SharePoint –

Project Sites

• Two modes: – Project Pro-only SharePoint Sync

• Syncs tasks to SharePoint tasks list (Project Server not needed).

– Save to SharePoint• Project Pro saves to Project Server databases—our

focus today.

– Save to SharePoint Mode• Tasks sent to Risks, Issues, Deliverables, etc. can be

linked to tasks in the Project file.

IT Pro Questions

• Should I add Project Server to my existing farm?

• Does PWA need to be in a separate site collection or web application?

• Can I add pre-existing “Project Lite” sites to PWA?

Page 26: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D HHow Project Server Changes SharePoint Admin Procedures

• Don’t delete any columns in any built-in lists in the Microsoft Project site template

• Don’t make additional lists based on Issues, Risks, or Deliverables templates in the same project site.

• Don’t delete project sites the “SharePoint way”. • If you synchronize permissions to project sites,

alerts will be lost. To avoid, administer SharePoint permissions yourself.

Page 27: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Database Requirements

• Analysis Services is required• Reporting Services (and

PerformancePoint) are optional• A separate content database for the PWA

site is recommended• Project sites can be in any database/site

collection

Page 28: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Code

• Project Server 2010 shares the SharePoint Server Enterprise code base– You get access to great enterprise features like

InfoPath Forms Services and Performance Point dashboards.

• Project reports are now presented directly in Performance Point business intelligence Report Center.

Page 29: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Data

• The Draft database contains tables for saving unpublished projects from Microsoft Project Professional and other applications.

• Project Web App does not show project data in the Draft database.

Page 30: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Data

• The Published database contains all published projects and enterprise resources, the enterprise global template, and other templates. Published projects are visible in Project Web App.

• The Published database also contains tables that are specific to Project Web App.

Page 31: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H Project Server Architecture

• The Reporting database (RDB) is the staging area for generating reports and OLAP cubes.

• Data in the Reporting database is comprehensive and updated in, almost, real time.

Page 32: Why SharePoint and Project Server is the Right Tool Combination For Your Projects

C D H SharePoint and Project Server

• The Project Web App components of Project Server also use the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 configuration database for project site setup and the content database for project site content such as custom pages, workflows, management settings, documents, and lists of issues, risks, and commitments.
