But Why Should I Marry?

God instituted marriage; it was not man’s idea or invention. That is why it is best to go back to God to

understand it, rather than seek answers at the altar of human knowledge. God has revealed his mind

and declared his will, in clear and sufficient detail in his Word, the Bible, where you will find six valid

reasons why you should marry.

1. God made male and female: ‘But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and

female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife.’ ~Mark 10:6-7 .

The key phrase to note is, ‘for this cause’. In this declaration, God reveals the cause for marriage: You

should marry because God made us male and female with that simple intention. ‘So God created man in

his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.’ ~Gen 1:27 . In

bringing the woman to the man and joining them in marriage, God categorically stated ‘They are no

more two, but one flesh.’ ~Mark 10:8. When male and female are united as one, the image of God is

wholly reflected, to his glory.

2. It is not good to be alone: ‘And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will

make him an help meet for him.’ ~Gen 2:18. By emphasising ‘not good’, God revealed the necessity of

marriage. You also note the key words: ‘alone’, ‘meet’. In English, ‘alone’ and ‘lonely’ appear to besimilar in meaning and sound, but they are definitely quite different. Alone does not mean lonely; Adam

was not lonely, not when he enjoyed the company of the LORD God himself. Yet Adam was alone,

meaning he was single; there was only one of his kind! Therefore, God made the woman ‘meet for him’,

meaning appropriate, apt, and fitting for him.

3. A help: From Gen 2:18 you will also note that the woman was made by God as an ‘help’ for Adam. A

‘help’ (noun) does not imply a ‘servant’ but rather a ‘partner’ or a ‘providential support’ because, the

psalmist calls God his help (Psa 70:5). It is God’s wisdom that man needed an help; marriage is God’s

solution. ‘Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.’ ~1 Cor 11:9. 

4. Companionship: Speaking through the prophet Malachi concerning marriage, God says: ‘… she is thy

companion, and the wife of thy covenant.’ ~Mal 2:14. A ‘companion’ is one who provides personal

company. Notice how Adam considered his wife: ‘And the man said, The woman whom thou gave to be

with me.’ ~Gen 3:12. Key phrase: ‘to be with me’. So another reason you marry is to be with one

another. Married couples living in different places cannot experience companionship.

5. To procreate: Having created male and female, ‘God blessed them, and said unto them, Be fruitful,

and multiply.’ ~Gen 1:27-28. Procreation is important to God, and in his wisdom he instituted marriage

and decreed that children were to be born only within the framework of marriage. ‘And did not he make

one? And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed.’ ~Mal 2:15. Although it is true, that

impotent men and barren woman cannot produce offspring, it is not their fault, rather God has allowed

it. Such couples yet fulfil the other purposes of marriage.

6. To avoid fornication: ‘Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let

every woman have her own husband.’ ~1 Cor 7:2. When children attain puberty, sexual desires arekindled naturally, and gradually they begin to ‘burn’. This is the way God designed man. Scripture

teaches that marriage is the legitimate channel to the consummation of such sexual desire. ‘It is better

to marry than to burn.’ ~1 Cor 7:9.
