PROJECTS & PROGRAMS

THE LEADERS PROGRAMV.A.S.A.C.

A V.A.S.A.C. represents the group of people within an academic institution, nonprofit or business entity that manage the Global Deeds' LEADERS PROGRAM

(Volunteer, receive Academic tutoring, attend Seminars on entrepreneurship among other topics, sign up for Academic advising sessions, and participate in our Careers fair in order to find employment)

(Volunteer)

The LEADERS PROGRAM (V.A.S.A.C.) pairs knowledgeable professional, college and graduate student mentors with selected high school students to help support a service-based project led, and partially conceived, by the high school student. Global Deeds brings resources and structure to help

those who otherwise would not be able to pursue their passions and deeply affect their local or international communities. The selection process starts with assisted recruitment through high schools, other nonprofits and employment agencies who help us select a group of up to 50 motivated individuals. The LEADERS PROGRAM gives high school-age students the opportunity to cause real change and realize their potential as future leaders of social, environmental, political, or educational change (social entrepreneurs).Leaders will tailor our projects based on their own community needs and on what moves/affects them. Projects include:

(Social Advocacy through the arts/creative product development) Artropoly (Disaster Relief Operation)Hope In A Box (Environmental Protection Training & Certification) Green Life2 (Education: academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, and school supplies distribution) iAM E.d.U / Backpacks of Hope (Health) Vitared

(Academic tutoring)V.A.S.A.C. offers up to 5 hours per week per student during the academic year (September through mid May, excluding holidays). Tutoring could be conducted online or in person.

(Seminars)Once per year, in September, the Global Deeds Seminar Series presents five guest speakers to talk to the students about their respective personal and professional experiences, providing guidance and enthusiasm to the audience in general. Social Entrepreneurship Program (Training and Development) is a workshop series where students learn about how to run their own business and sell their products and services online. Students we select are socially-driven, hence the focus on social business development. Notable social entrepreneurs are invited to some of the training sessions where they share tips on how to run such type of business. At the end of the workshop series (5 sessions per year), students gain a solid understanding of what a social entrepreneur is and why it is important to master certain administrative processes before engaging in such endeavor.

“What is a Social Entrepreneur?”Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change.Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to take new leaps.Social entrepreneurs often seem to be possessed by their ideas, committing their lives to changing the direction of their field. They are both visionaries and ultimate realists, concerned with the practical implementation of their vision above all else. Each social entrepreneur presents ideas that are user-friendly, understandable, ethical, and engage widespread support in order to maximize the number of local people that will stand up, seize their idea, and implement with it. In other words, every leading social entrepreneur is a mass recruiter of local changemakers—a role model proving that citizens who channel their passion into action can do almost anything.Over the past two decades, the citizen sector has discovered what the business sector learned long ago: There is nothing as powerful as a new idea in the hands of a first-class entrepreneur.

Why "Social" Entrepreneur?Just as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss and improving systems, inventing new approaches, and creating solutions to change society for the better. While a business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur comes up with new solutions to social problems and then implements them on a large scale.

Historical Examples of Leading Social Entrepreneurs: Susan B. Anthony (U.S.): Fought for Women's Rights in the United States, including the right to control property and

helped spearhead adoption of the 19th amendment. Vinoba Bhave (India): Founder and leader of the Land Gift Movement, he caused the redistribution of more than

7,000,000 acres of land to aid India's untouchables and landless. Dr. Maria Montessori (Italy): Developed the Montessori approach to early childhood education. Florence Nightingale (U.K.): Founder of modern nursing, she established the first school for nurses and fought to

improve hospital conditions. John Muir (U.S.): Naturalist and conservationist, he established the National Park System and helped found The

Sierra Club. Jean Monnet (France): Responsible for the reconstruction of the French economy following World War II, including

the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). The ECSC and the European Common Market were direct precursors of the European Union.

(Academic advising)Academic advising sessions are held four times per academic year, where a number of mentors are invited during an early afternoon to guide the students, and these could also take professional assessment tests. These sessions last from 3-6 hours. Here, students are made aware of all the factors that can affect their academic performance and are suggested strategies to improve their grades. Students also take an aptitude test in order to better elucidate their career choices.

(Career Fair)A. Work Force Development Program (Global Deeds Digital). A certificate program will be provided to students to complete after

school, where they will learn new computer skills such as web design, database management, social media administration/marketing (Social Media Optimization), logo design, tagging, among other technical duties. This program also covers workshops on building their resumes, writing cover letters and essays, body language, work ethics and job hunting. Employers are also invited to open their doors to high school students and young adults seeking for work, through our “Give Jobs!” campaign. Students are invited to participate in the Global Deeds Career Fair.

B. The Global Deeds Career Fair takes place in April, and it gives students an opportunity to find summer jobs and get interviews on the spot.
