Who Is KellyKelly McGonigal, PhD, is a health psychologist and lecturer at
Stanford University, and a leading expert in the new field of “science-help.” She is passionate about translating cutting-
edge research from psychology, neuroscience, and medicine into practical strategies for health, happiness, and personal success.
She is also one of those amazing inspirational people who know well that the academic knowledge has to be translated so that
the vast majority of us simply get it right. And she does it perfectly. She specifically concentrates on the areas of willpower and self-control and stress management, or as she likes to call it
“embracing stress”.

Why We Love HerI came across Kelly McGonigal works when working on a post on stress management. And I was enlighten – she was the first one with a totally different approach. She did not view stress as
the enemy but as a friend. and she had science to back it. I researched and read her works and research and I must say I am a dedicated fan. You’ll be in love to. Here are some reasons why.

She Is A Leader Driven By Compassion
And Pragmatism. She is a leader driven by compassion and pragmatism, and her tweets often discuss her interesting life as a vegan, animal-lover, yogi and scientist. The
compassion makes her discover the areas and tackle the problems we all endure while pragmatism makes her look for solutions in science not in
motivational quotes or cliche phrases.
She Is Not Afraid To Share
She makes it possible for us to discover her work easily. Her personal website offers array of posts on meditation, willpower, stress management and more. She writes books, gives talks and is not afraid to share her more personal aspects of life. A true inspiration. She even has released a series of great audiobooks The Neuroscience of Change (Sounds True 2012) in which she weaves the newest
findings of science with Eastern contemplative wisdom to give listeners a revolutionary process for personal transformation.
She Is Really CleverShe teaches for a wide range of programs at Stanford University,
including the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, the Graduate School of Business, and the
School of Medicine’s Health Improvement Program. She has received a number of teaching awards for her undergraduate psychology
courses, including Stanford University’s highest teaching honour, the Walter J. Gores award.
She Has A Vast Array Of Interests
She is not only a academic teacher and a writer. She is a true leader with great passions. She is also passionate about the benefits of
physical exercise and has been certified as a group fitness instructor since 2000. In her free time, she continues to teach group fitness
classes – because as she puts it “sometimes moving, breathing, and sweating is the best thing you can do to create health, joy, and
resilience.”
She Gives Mind-Blowing Presentations
Ok, let’s face it - all TED presentations are great. But some are greater than the others and Kelly gave an amazing speech when she talked about embracing
stress. You can view the whole presentation here.
She Has A Sense Of Humor
You might think that people who deal with serious matters are always serious. Not Kelly. She obviously has great knowledge but is not afraid to be funny when
giving her presentations and she is definitely an example that you can mix the knowledge with approachable attitude.
She Translated Academic Into Real Life
McGonigal, who is straddling the worlds of research and practice, is (as Forbes puts it) a leader driven by compassion and pragmatism”. Compassion makes her tackle the very essence of human problems and challenges we all encounter and pragmatism makes her insights, findings and science-based
techniques extremely valuable and… easy to implement.
She Writes Great Books
So far she has written two amazing books - one is available right now and the other one “The Upside of Stress” will be available in 2015.
The Willpower Instinct The first book to explain the new science of self-control and how it can be harnessed to improve our health, happiness, and productivity.
The Upside of Stress is the first book to bring together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience—the human capacity for stress-related growth—and mindset, the power of beliefs to shape reality.
