As previous mention in other President messages some benefits of organized dentistry are camaraderie, continuing education, and political advocacy. Our profession is rapidly changing, and this includes dental regulations. There is a lot at stake. Everyday public policy decisions are made that has the ability to drastically influence our profession. Politicians have legislated numerous diverse issues that had the potential to our practice and patients: tobacco, teeth whitening, x-rays, fluoride, midlevel providers, licensure, antibiotics, dental benefits, and access to care just to name a few. It is pertainent that lawmakers understand what we do and what we stand for. Why? It is normally more than a point of view that goes into guiding a decision. Obviously, we know more about oral health than politicians. If our voices are not heard, we cannot expect them to make informed decisions on our profession. Dental Day is an opportunity to channel our individual voices into a unanimous expression, which we have direct contact with elected officials. It is an opportunity to educate and deliver our side of the story for when that time comes for them to crucial policy discussions that could impact your patients, your employees, your colleagues, your community, and yourself. They are equipped to do so or at least have the resources. I urge that you all take this one day to let your voice be heard. Please join us for Dental Day. It matters.

CourseDescription

This presentation provides an introduction to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the general requirements normally applicable in the dental setting. This is followed by a review of infection control and the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, OSHA requirements and CDC recommendations. The participants will be provided with recommendations and requirements for infection control prior to, during and after patient care. Basic fundamentals of the chain of infection and modes of transmission are reviewed, followed by a review of hand hygiene, PPE, surface disinfection and the Hazard Communication Standard, instrument processing, waterline maintenance and amalgam separators. Common myth and realties in the context of regulations, a culture of safety, recommendations and evidence-based infection control protocols will also be discussed during the presentation.
