Happy October! My favorite month of the year is here. The weather finally starts to cool down and I get to break out my favorite piece of clothing . . . my hoodie!! This month also hosts my favorite holiday, Halloween. Getting the kids all decked out in their costumes, dressing the dog in something ridiculous, stealing candy from my kids . . . did I say that out loud? Come
on, you all know you do it.
I am so excited about this months issue because it features a pumpkin patch from the county I grew up in, and I also got to feature a “Daddypreneur!” I came across this amazingly talented guy while attending a local concert. Sometimes the guitar player is more than just a rock star.
As always, keep an eye out on our Facebook page. This month we will have two give-a-ways! A family 4-pack to Walters Pumpkin Patch, and a gift pack for your favorite 4-legged friend. We are also gearing up for our Best for Families contest. Visit our website for more information about how you can place your vote!
Thank you as always for reading, and I wish all of you a happy autumn!

When you think of a firehouse, the one animal that may come to mind is the spotted Dalmatian. Dalmatians used to serve as carriage dogs for firehouses back when horses pulled fire engines. When a fire occurred, the Dalmatians would run in front of the horses, clearing the way and guiding the horses to the fire.
Dalmatians also helped find victims in burning buildings and guarded firehouses. They would keep thieves from stealing firefighting equipment and horses.
Although firehouses today no longer have horses, some still have Dalmatians as pets. The Dalmatian remains a symbol of the firehouse.

Though he spends most weekend night's rockin’ out with his band mates, Bruce Despommier isn't your typical “rock star.” Despommier is a loving father of three children, an active member in his church, a local air traffic controller and now . . . an author.
Every since Despommier began taking guitar lessons at age 8, he knew he wanted to be a rock star! Every kids' dream, right? However, simply growing up doesn't always give you the knowledge or the means to do so.
After leaving New Jersey, where he spent most of his childhood, Despommier spent the next few years attending college at the University of Massachusetts, after which he returned to New Jersey to train as a professional tennis coach.
Despommier moved to Wichita for good in 2000, where he has since worked as an air traffic controller at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport. Sounds like a busy life, doesn't it? Well, it wasn't enough for Bruce.
Despommier was looking for a way to relax on the weekends, while making some extra spending money. His solution...start a rock band.
Despommier currently tours with the band, GeTBaD. The band successfully plays throughout the Midwest delivering high-energy shows that frequently fill clubs.

In 2009, Despommier found himself with extra time on his hands.
During his shows people would often ask him questions about his equipment, how he gets the sound he does, or how they could start their own band?
He spent some time searching online for books or tutorials about how to start a rock band and came up empty.
“There’s nothing that tells you how to go from playing Guitar Hero to having an actual band,” said Despommier.
That's when the idea for his book came to fruition. From amateurs just starting out, to those looking to start their own band, “Let's Get Rockin’” is a step-by-step how-to guide for all musical talent ranges. From information on how to set up a practice band, to trouble-shooting those pesky hums, this book is all you need to get started.
When visiting his website, www.letsgetrockin.com, you can also sign up for a “Back Stage Pass.” The pass gives you full access to the website which includes video tutorials, invitations to special “Let's Get Rockin’” events, and even live video chats with Despommier.
The easy to follow book is perfect for parents of children who want to start playing instruments.

With a pumpkin patch that covers 73 acres and a variety of other unique features, Walter’s Pumpkin Patch is becoming Wichita tradition for area families during the Fall season.
written by Cari Fischer
Harvesting Halloween Memories
From early planting, tilling, and weeding, the Walter's spend their year growing the pumpkins that will be the center of attention the following fall. Becky spends her year also cutting charming faces to giant gourds, and preparing other decorative items that she will sell in their gift shop.
There is far more to do at Walter's than just picking pumpkins. From “Punkin Chunkin” to mining for interesting fossils in the Walter's mine, to jumping on GIANT pillows or flying down the zip-line, families can spend most of a day here.
There are even events at night such as “The Haunted
Going to the pumpkin patch as a child, I can remember taking a hay ride out into the field, picking my own pumpkin, and maybe getting a nice cup of hot cocoa at the end. Walter's
Pumpkin Patch is so much more.
Carroll and Becky Walters have been growing pumpkins since the early 80's and have grown their business little by little every year. Their pumpkin patch now spreads over more than 73 acres of their 1700 acre farm.
Don't think for a moment however that this is a hobby that they get to do 6 weeks out of the year. The Walter's prepare year-round for this haunting event!

Cannery.” Just reading the description of this chilling ride on their website will give you goose bumps! If that's not enough, try the “Flashlight Maze.” Make sure your flashlight has fresh batteries, finding your way through the maze in daylight is hard enough!
If the traditional hay ride to pick your own pumpkin is all you're looking for, then Walter's is definitely worth the drive. There are many, different varieties of pumpkins to choose from. This year, Walter's has introduced a new variety that's PINK! Find one little girl who wouldn't love that!
While you're visiting Walter's, why not catch up on your Christmas shopping? The pumpkin patch has a beautiful bakery. Your mouth will water just from the amazing aroma that spills out of it's front doors. The gift shop is full of not only autumn decoration, but fun gifts for your KU or K-state fan. Don't forget to visit the Christmas attic for a head start on your winter decorating!
With so many fun attractions, events, and amazing food, I can't think of anywhere better to take my family this fall season. The Walter's want everyone to know, “We're not just for kids, and we're not just a field of orange pumpkins . . . we harvest memories.”

Learning
Caring for your baby’s m o u t h
starts early, even before their teeth start popping up! Use a soft, warm, damp washcloth to gently massage the gums at least twice daily. The two most important times are after feedings and definitely before bed: this prevents sugars & bacteria from sitting in the mouth causing infection or decay on newly erupting baby teeth. When your baby’s teeth start popping through the gums, it’s time to upgrade from a washcloth to a small head, soft bristle toothbrush. Lookout for signs of tooth decay -- brown or white spots on the teeth.
Doctor’s OrdersBrett Begnoche, DDS
Baby teeth are very important for maintaining the appropriate space for adult/permanent teeth as well as speech development and healthy eating/digestion. If you begin to notice any symptoms of infection or decay in your child’s mouth, visit your family dentist for a check-up.”

At OK Elementary, students were also encouraged to wear college shirts if they had them. The teachers’ goal was to support AVID’s theme of college-readiness and to have students ask about the college they attended.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to encourage students to go to college who traditionally may not see college as a possibility. At the elementary level, 4th and 5th grade students are taught organizational skills, note taking skills and study skills to create a foundation to help them be successful as they go on to middle and high school.
