A message from UBMS Director, Mrs. Kaye Monk-Morgan Greetings!

I HOPE that this note finds that you are doing well and continuing to pursue academic and personal success. This is the first edition of the program year for those students planning to join the UBMS ranks for the 2012-2013 program year. The “Wichita Star” is a monthly newsletter, used as a vehicle to communicate with UBMS students, past and present. Please take a moment each month to check up on the latest UBMS happenings. Ms. Karen Rogers

USING C-4 IN THE CLASSROOM I recently attended the ACT State Organization 2013 Annual Conference, and one of the sessions I attended was called “C-4: It’s Not Just a Highly Explosive Substance; It’s a Great Educational Tool as Well.” I was hoping to receive insights on specific tools to use in the classroom in order to help educate our students; however, the information shared caused me to re-think what “successful education” really looks like. During the session, representatives from Clifton Clyde High School, USD 224, shared their “C-4 Model” as a comprehensive process that involves career research, student aptitude, academic analysis, counseling, variety, and flexibility in order to determine and meet the individual needs of students. The four areas of concern were: Child, Character, College and Career (“C-4”). As a matter of interest, I thought I would expound further on those concerns: Child: the main focus of education should always be the child. “Children are our most valuable resources.” (Herbert Hoover) What we give them today shapes the outcome of our future. It is the responsibility of every educator to ensure that not only does education get taught, but that “learning” actually takes place in the classroom. It is important to take time to get to know each student and their specific need. It is as equally important that every child is encouraged to learn, and that they realize that their effort plays a huge role in the learning process. The quality of education does not matter, unless the child actually learns. Character: your character speaks volume of who you really are. “Character building begins in our infancy, and continues until death.” (Eleanor Roosevelt) Most people tend to frame their character based on their values and beliefs. Your parents instill certain values in us when we are young, but then we further shape our beliefs as we grow older based on experience and exposure to the world around us. This may or may not be taught in the classroom, but it should be reinforced at home: Try to look for the good in everyone you meet, get to

know someone who does not look like you, extend a helping hand to someone in need, and seek to understand before you are understood. This builds a strong character! College: preparing students for college is one of our main goals at UBMS. “Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.” (Abraham Lincoln) We are all on a path of success, but it is up to all of us if we continue on that path or choose to get off at the next exit. By the time you graduate high school, you should have all the tools necessary to attend college. Attending college might sound like the impossible dream to some, but attending the “right” college will keep you on the path to success. Career: we all can find a job, but try to choose a career that you enjoy. “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Look around you, who do you see with a successful career? What did they do to get where they are? It probably took a lot of hard work and commitment. If you enjoy what you do, you won’t focus so much on the pay. Your ultimate “reward” is doing what you can to make this world a better place, or enable someone else to become a better person. “You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.” ― Beverly Sills ACT – Are you prepped?
