Enhancing Literacy Learning through Movement

CRN: 26388 Course#: CI 751CA Credits: 0.5 Tuition: $70.00 Date: January 21 Time: 9:00 AM-4:00 PM Location: WSU Main Campus,

Corbin Education, Room 162 Instructor: Dr. Gayla Lohfink and Mr. Rick Pappas Audience: Early Childhood Educators, Elementary Educators, Special Education Educators Course Focus: Strand 4 Course Description: There is strong anatomical, cognitive, and functional evidence to support movement as a learning strategy. Movement is described as involving kinesthetic perceptions of information about one’s body and its position relative to the environment. Research indicates movement increases one’s heart rate and stimulates brain function, which facilitates a child’s ability to take in information and learn. Specific integration relative to the teaching of English Language Arts is attained through relevant doings or kinesthetic procedures of learning that anchor academic concepts. It includes purposeful movements, like gesturing to demonstrate vocabulary meanings or creative dramatizations that use bodily movements to communicate character traits. It may also involve seat changing or walking the room to orally think/share and write ideas with others. Studies have shown that reading content lessons enhanced with physical activity improved the academic achievement of elementary students. This presentation offers curriculum integrating movement, physical activity, and literacy in elementary education. Research of elementary teacher candidates’ implementation of integrating movement and literacy content via lesson planning is shown. Participants will not only engage in how to enhance literacy learning through movement activities, but will also explore and implement practices in their own classrooms. Participants will be asked to reflect on organized movement and management procedures in their own teaching experiences.
