Introduction The Océ ColorWave 300 multifunctional printer is the world's first single footprint system capable of printing, copying, and scanning wide format documents in both color and black and white. Announced in January of 2010, BERTL Inc. recently

tested the Océ ColorWave 300 printer. The Océ ColorWave 300 is the first multifunctional wide format printer with a truly integrated scanner. All the functions can be controlled from one simple user panel. Consequently, customers only need to maintain one IP address. Unique Océ technologies, like Océ Image Logic® and Océ Dynamic Switching ensure consistent and productive results every time. The powerful controller swiftly handles all file formats, including HP-GL/2, PDF, DWF, and JPEG, without forgoing speed. Users can also print and scan documents via a USB flash drive located on the control panel. As a result of the technology encompassing this device, there is no longer a need for organizations to invest in separate printers for large format color and B&W documents. The new Océ ColorWave® 300 is a true single footprint system for printing, copying and scanning. It is perfect for businesses with limited space, as only one system is needed instead of two to print in both color and B&W. This unique system will help save customers 50% in floor space as only one device is needed. The system offers architectural, engineering, construction and commercial printing companies an ideal alternative to conventional wide format toner systems. The price list for the device and optional software and hardware includes the following:

OCÉ HISTORY

Océ history goes back to 1857 in Venlo, The Netherlands, when the company began in the pharmaceutical industry as a family owned and operated company. In 1919, the company entered the copier market by starting the production of blueprint material. In 1931, a new technology called the semi-dry process was marketed under the Océ name, which is an abbreviation of “Ohne Componente,” or “without components.” In the 1960s, the demand for office copier systems grew rapidly, and Océ focused its attention on plain paper copying, for which there was a large demand in offices. In 1973, the first plain paper copier equipment was introduced: the Océ 1700. In 1983, Océ introduced its first equipment for copying large-format originals on plain paper, the Océ 7500. In 1995, Océ introduced its first digital high-volume printer/copier for office environments and for technical documentation in wide format. Since the 1990s, Océ has also marketed a line of wide format monochrome scanners followed by wide format color scanners ranging from 36- to 54-inches wide scanning capability. THE OCÉ COLORWAVE 300

The Océ ColorWave 300 digital copier/printer and scanner is designed for a decentralized technical environment. This device is a 36-inch wide inkjet printer with a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi and comes with a two roll configuration. A top delivery tray with air separation allows up to 50 E-size paper

documents to be neatly collated and stacked, eliminating any need for extra space for receiving tables. Located on the top right side of the device is the control panel to operate the system, which can be tilted side-to-side, as well as up and down. The control panel features an efficient scroll and click method for quick and easy selections. The Océ ColorWave 300 system accepts various media types including Bond (18-28lb), Transparencies (20-28lb), Vellum, Translucent, and Film (3.5mil).

Built into the Océ ColorWave 300 system is an internal controller with 1 GB memory and a 160 GB hard disk for storing print jobs and file folders. The Océ ColorWave 300 system is connected to the local LAN through an Ethernet connection in the back. Just one IP address required for the scanner and printer. Optional software available with the Océ ColorWave 300 system includes an Adobe PostScript 3/PDF file interpreter. This PostScript option enables the submission of PDF files with USB flash drive or job submission tools directly to the printer. The optional Océ Repro Desk® Studio software lets users print to multiple wide format devices, view and track printing costs. The Océ Account Center features customized accounting fields for copy, print, and scanning.

The Océ ColorWave 300 multifunctional system is the second device introduced into the Océ ColorWave series. There are technological and product type differences between the two devices that currently make up this series. The Océ ColorWave 600 is a 42-inch digital four color printer utilizing Océ’s new CrystalPoint® printing technology (a patented color toner technology). The Océ ColorWave 300 system is a 36-inch thermal inkjet all-in-one (single footprint color print, copy and scan system).

Scan Overview The Océ Scanner Express, which is integrated on top of the Océ ColorWave 300 printer, is a 36-inch wide Contact Image Sensor (CIS) color scanner and is supported with Océ Image Logic

The scanner cannot scan and copy an original that is thicker than 0.8 mm nor can you scan rigid originals. When making a copy or scanning a document you do not need to center the original precisely. The exact size and position of the original is automatically detected by the scanner. Do not pull back the original when it is already fed into the scanner. To release the original before scanning press the red stop button on the user panel. After the scan procedure the scanner always holds the original or can be set to release the original automatically. You can release the original if you select 'Release paper' on the user panel. Print Image Quality BERTL has custom designed a selection of test documents in order to investigate the ability of wide format devices to reproduce fonts, fine lines, and graphics in a monochrome environment.

BERTL printed the 36” x 48” test pattern (shown below) with various lines, text, image gradations, and borders in all the available print modes.

A BERTL test original was printed by the Océ ColorWave 300 printer in all imaging modes (Check, Release and Presentation) and all color modes (Color, Grayscale and True Vector).

This is a cropped image of a BERTL test pattern that examines the reproduction capability of fine lines in multiple colors. The BERTL test pattern shows that the Océ ColorWave 300 printer has excellent graphic and image reproduction capabilities with excellent printing of small fonts regardless of color and print quality mode (Check, Release, and Presentation) Also, fine lines are handled with precision and clarity.

(-: Below Expectations, : Meets Expectations, +: Exceeds Expectations) WHAT WE LIKED

BERTL was very satisfied with the image quality attained using each of the print quality modes which included Check, Release, and Presentation mode using each color mode (Color, Grayscale and True Vector).

After reviewing each of the print quality modes, BERTL analysts determined the best quality mode for each color. When printing in color and grayscale the best quality mode was Presentation mode. When printing in grayscale the best quality mode was Release mode.

Grayscale Release mode was able to reproduce Black Overprint accurately.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

BERTL was pleased with the overall image quality reproduced with the Océ ColorWave 300 printer. However, in our tests we observed that the device was unable to Black Overprint in most modes and colors. We also observed that when printing in True Vector the device was unable to reproduce the grayscale strip in our test pattern. In addition when printing with Check

mode a horizontal pattern was visible in the grayscale strip, graduated grayscale steps and graphic images in the BERTL test pattern.

Copy Image Quality BERTL performed a series of quality tests with the combined scanner and printer. We usually conduct these tests by first scanning the test image and then printing it. This testing method is more demanding than

using preconfigured files for printing because it results in a real-life scenario where a person walks up to the scanner, scans the image, and then prints it out using the Océ ColorWave 300 printer.

A BERTL test original was copied by the Océ ColorWave 300 printer and then printed in all original modes (Lines and Text, Draft, Colored, Photo, Dark Original, and Blueprint modes)

(-: Below Expectations, : Meets Expectations, +: Exceeds Expectations)

In our copy image quality evaluation using the BERTL test pattern we found that the Océ ColorWave 300 printer has outstanding copy reproduction capabilities. In our analysis we found that the ColorWave 300 was able to accurately reproduce fonts as small as 2 points when using the grayscale mode and 4 points in color mode. The line quality reproduced in both color and grayscale modes was outstanding as they were reproduced with accuracy and precision. BERTL concluded that the Check and Release modes stood out in quality and accuracy when used to make color copies. When making grayscale copies, the Check mode stood out for its ability to reproduce maps and images more accurately while the Release and Presentation modes stood out for their ability to reproduce small fonts and lines. WHAT WE LIKED

BERTL was very satisfied with the copy image quality achieved using each of the copy modes.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

Grayscale gradations were clearly visible in most modes. However, none of the modes could reproduce the gradation scale from 10% all the way up to 100%.

SCANNER ACCURACY

BERTL performed a series of quality tests on the scanners. We used our Applied Image (QA-1) test chart for evaluating the scanner’s horizontal and vertical accuracy. Instead of measuring the accuracy between two end points, we instead only measured a random selection of 6” width. Our test results indicated that:

Océ ColorWave 300 Accuracy %

Horizontal 0.013

Vertical 0.023

Both the horizontal and vertical result is excellent and is well below the vendor’s claimed accuracy of 0.1%. TEXT SHARPNESS

Text sharpness is another test where we look at the impact of scanning small text size using each of the different resolutions. BERTL Analysts used the following scanned resolutions:

100 dpi 200 dpi 300 dpi 400 dpi 600 dpi

The expectation is that the higher the scan resolution the better the quality of the scanned original. At 600 dpi, users get the most quality output out of the Océ ColorWave 300 scanner. Using lower resolution settings reduces the scanning quality but provides the user with higher scanning speeds. As the results show, the higher the resolution the better the image quality attained from the Océ ColorWave 300 system. BERTL recommends that users consider the impact of using higher dpi resolution settings. If users wish to capture images with the highest and most detailed precision, then you should use higher dpi settings. If it is less important to capture the smallest details, using smaller dpi settings can accomplish the job. In general, we find that users should avoid scanning with high dpi settings as it takes longer to scan a typical job and in the end, users are left with a very large file size.

LINE PAIR RESOLUTION TEST

Optical resolution is a physical characteristic of a scanner system, and it describes the ability of a system to distinguish, detect, and record physical details. However, there is more to the story than just the sensor in a scanner system. So when considering scanning quality, we also have to consider the optical system, mirrors, scanning technology, glass plate, and the scanner’s illumination system. Furthermore, when scanning is not performed at the highest optical resolution, we must consider how the scanner performs the actual scaling to the selected scanning resolution. All of these factors introduce errors and reduce scanning quality; therefore optical resolutions are an indicator of scan quality not a measure of it. We use a Line Pairs per Millimeter (lp/mm) test as a way to measure spatial resolution. With the lp/mm measure, all quality factors — such as lenses, optical system, scaling, and image processing — are taken into account, making the use of the lp/mm test a better way to measure scanning quality. In connection with Line Pairs per Millimeter, we also like to measure how well a scanner maintains rapid change in the image and if it maintains the sharpness instead of just blurring rapid transition in the image. BERTL examines the vertical and horizontal quality of the line pairs per mm (lp/mm) test. The line rating is determined by examining the scanned images at 100% Zoom and visually inspecting the line quality to determine the point where the line quality starts to diminish and the white space between the lines becomes blurred or indistinguishable. The chart below shows the results of the lp/mm test for resolutions between 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 dpi. As expected, we see that with lower resolutions, the lp/mm rating goes down, but the curve improves fairly well as the resolution is increased.

WHAT WE RECOMMEND

BERTL recommends to users that they consider their need for high quality versus normal scanning quality (200 dpi). If they want to capture images with the highest and most detailed precision, then they should use a higher scanning resolution.

Users should also be aware that when they use a high dpi setting, they will ultimately be left with a very large file size. Users should make sure that they find the right balance that fits in within their organization.

WHAT WE LIKED

BERTL was particularly satisfied with the text sharpness we were able to attain from the Océ ColorWave 300 scanner with all of the resolutions tested.

BERTL was also pleased with the copy output and image quality generated from the copy image quality tests.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

We would like to see improvements in the scanner's ability to reproduce horizontal and vertical line accuracy when using some of the lower dpi resolution settings.

BERTL’S PANCHROMATIC TEST

This test checks if a device is scanning panchromatic correctly. If a scanner has a dedicated panchromatic line sensor, or the grayscale response is formed by combining the red, blue, and green color channels, the test reveals a correct response. However, if a scanner uses the green color channel to get the grayscale response, it will not detect color that does not reflect green. In this case the scanner will produce an image where all colors (red, cyan, green, magenta, blue, and yellow) appear the same shade. Below, we look at the grayscale scanning performance of the Océ ColorWave 300 scanner. The results show that the device is only using the green color channel to scan grayscale images causing Red, Blue and Magenta colors to appear dark and over-saturated. This seems to indicate that the device is only using the green color channel when scanning in grayscale in this example. WHAT WE LIKED

BERTL analysts were pleased with the result of the Panchromatic test result as the scanner was able to accurate reproduce the test pattern as expected.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

BERTL does not have any recommendations for this section.

Performance SCAN SPEED TESTS

BERTL performed a series of scanner speed tests for each of the supported color modes offered with the scanner. These included Color, Black and White, and Grayscale scanning. This test range represents more than 95% of all scanners in use and is therefore representative for a real-user environment. For each test, we measured the scanning speed between 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 dpi resolutions. Our test file consists of a custom test target [architectural E-size (36” X 48”)] designed by BERTL analysts. This test target was also

used to measure the resulting file size generated.

For the performance test, we used a computer running Microsoft Windows XP SP3 operating system with a Dell Precision T3400 Intel® Core™ 2 Duo CPU, 3.25 GB of memory, and connected to the scanner via the Ethernet connection. The test was performed using the supplied scanner software. BERTL measured the scanning time by starting a regular stopwatch at the time we pressed the scan button and stopping it when the scanning application finished scanning the image into the destination file. We call this test the "observed scanning speed" for a drawing. All tests were performed using the devices default compression modes in each color. For each scan timed, BERTL also measured the reaction time from the time we pressed the scan button to the time the scanner actually started scanning, and then we measured the end time at the completion of the scan.

We then graphed the results with both the observed time and the adjusted time, which is the observed time minus the reaction time. This performance is more true to the actual true speed of the scanner. Finally, we graph the scanner manufacturer's claimed speed time. All measures are in inches per seconds (ips). BERTL cautions against the absolute interpretation of the performance result because the actual result depends heavily on the computer in use and the scanner compression settings and interface.

COPY PERFORMANCE

In our copy performance test, we take an ‘E’-size original, scan it and then print three copies to measure the real copy throughput.

As the number of copies is increased, users will see a small boost to the number of documents that the Océ ColorWave 300 system can generate per minute depending on the color and print mode used.

The chart above shows a side by side view of the scan, print start and finished print times for each of the three copies. The chart shows that Check mode was the fastest mode tested in both grayscale and color. The device was able to complete all three grayscale copies in 243.86 seconds and 301.89 seconds in color. WHAT WE LIKED

The printed output performance will vary depending on the print mode, media type, quality mode, and the content of the file being printed. BERTL was very pleased with the print performance in all three color and quality modes tested.

Media Handling: Media Input Media for wide format devices comes in four different types with varying weights for the most part. The media types include bond paper, vellum, tracing paper, and film. The most commonly utilized paper and weight is standard plain 20 lb. bond paper for general

monochrome and color prints and copies. Vellum is typically used for archival purposes because of its longevity. Tracing paper and film are used for specialized application requirements, but are not usually used on a regular basis. The Océ ColorWave 300 can print on uncoated paper, recycled paper, coated papers, transparent papers, photo paper and film roll media from 11" to 36” (279 mm to 914 mm) wide by 147.63' (45 m) long. Capacity

Wide format printer/copiers hold rolls of media. The Océ ColorWave 300 system has a maximum roll length capacity of 393.7 ft (120 m). Capacity also depends on the number of rolls that the machine is capable of holding. The media handling system can handle two rolls at a maximum width size of 36”. The media capacity is directly related to the maximum diameter of the media and roll combined that the device will accept. The Océ ColorWave 300 system supports a media core of 2" in diameter. Thicker media will allow for fewer linear feet on a roll. A machine may max out its roll capacity based on the thickness of the media used.

Size

When a new size media is loaded from the front, the Océ ColorWave 300 system will automatically detect the width of the media. The user must define the correct media type using the control panel. Wide format printers generally max out at 36 inches in width and the linear footage of the roll’s length, or the print driver’s limitations. The Océ ColorWave 300 paper drawers can hold rolls up to 36 inches in width. Rolls are generally loaded onto a spindle, and the media is pulled through the printer.

The user pulls out the printhead, removes it and replaces it with a new one.

Once the new printhead has been inserted into the ink carriage, the user must close the printhead cover and make sure that all of the covers are securely closed. Once the printhead door is closed the printer will go into a calibration process which takes several minutes to complete.

Another consumable that needs to be replaced is the maintenance cassette. The maintenance cassette wipes the printheads and caps the printhead nozzles. During the print process, the printhead carriage regularly moves to the right-hand side of the printer to discharge some ink droplets into the maintenance cassette. These actions are necessary to keep the printheads in optimal condition. After about 16,404 sq/ft (5000 square meters) of output (the exact value depends on the print modes used), the printer lets the user know to replace the maintenance cassette.

Users are informed to replace the maintenance cassette when user panel displays the message 'Replace maintenance tray'. The print quality can deteriorate if the maintenance cassette is not replaced. Removal of the cassette should only be done using the wizard. Failure to do so can result in serious damage to the printheads.

While the carriage moves to the center the control panel will display the following message, 'Carriage moving to center position...'. Then, the screen displays the message 'Open maintenance door.'

With the door open the user has access to the maintenance cassette. The screen then displays the message 'Remove tray.' The user must then press the green grip to the left to release the cover and provides access to the maintenance cassette.

The user then pulls out the maintenance cassette. The cassette should be held in a horizontal position to avoid spilling any of the ink in the cassette. The packaging of the new maintenance cassette also includes a plastic zip lock waste bag. This bag is used to dispose the old maintenance cassette. Adding the new maintenance cassette is very simple. The user simply slides the new maintenance cassette into the cassette holder. The user closes the cover on the maintenance cassette locking the cover automatically. WHAT WE LIKED

Users can replace the ink tanks and maintenance cassette from a seated position with great ease.

The ink tanks are easy to replace. Replacing the maintenance cassette can be done by

anyone in the office. Changing the printheads was also very simple to

perform. WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

We would have like seeing a containment system that prevents spills from the maintenance cassette.

Device Management An efficient device management backbone is needed to take full advantage of the feature set within a printing device. Device management is commonly supported through a Web server on the device controller that can be accessed using any

desktop Internet browser. The user simply enters the IP address of the device into the URL address line. Users can also access device management at the print, copy, scan controller if the controller has a keyboard, monitor, and mouse. An administrator and a user have different management and monitoring needs. USERS

End users want to know if a device is capable of handling a job. Supply levels and a list of jobs already committed to print are important. For MFPs with document storage and communication capabilities, end users also need desktop management of print on demand, stored document viewing (to check print on demand files or scanned files), and, for the more advanced users, the creation of scan-to-email and scan-to-file destination templates. ADMINISTRATORS

An office or network manager looks for greater control over the device functionality and set up without leaving their desk. They may be looking to manage network set up, establish security, apply cost control measures, and check supply levels. A set up for automated email can alert different staff members when problems occur. Due to the nature of the Web server, this capability is usually limited to an individual device. Many manufacturers also include a network device management fleet tool, which allows for the monitoring and management of multiple devices around the network concurrently. Many also provide plug-ins to the most popular IT device management utilities to ensure the maximum amount of information can be relayed from their device to the third-party application. Print Status Monitoring

Printer status is monitored directly within Océ Express WebTools and Smart Inbox. Express WebTools provides a single interface to view and control the system via an internet browser without the need to install any additional software. Additional functionality allows users to manage the system status, settings, network configurations, and updates. The Océ PowerM Plus controller software consists of a basic module and a print module. The basic module is

utilized for file spooling directly onto the controller. The applications basic module include Océ Express WebTools, Océ Publisher Express, Queue Management, License Management, Smart Inbox, System Control Panel and Settings Management.

Device Management Features Summary

Web-Based Device Management Yes

Executable-Based Device Management Yes

Group Management Capability Yes

Manage Third-Party Devices No

Océ Express WebTools Interface for the Océ ColorWave 300 system is intended to be a lightweight easy to deploy job submitter as well as a system management tool.

WHAT WE LIKED

The Océ WebTool can be accessed via a Web browser by entering the Océ ColorWave 300 printer’s IP address. No additional software is required to manage the device settings. Océ supports both Windows Explorer and Mozilla web browsers.

In the Jobs Queue page, the user can immediately get all the important information about the printer’s condition. Users can submit a job via the browser.

The Océ applications and options are protected against unauthorized used and can be managed directly within Océ Express WebTools.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

BERTL found the device management and monitoring tools on the Océ ColorWave 300 system exceptionally easy to use.

Security High-tech security is never out of the news, with reports of information theft and hacking making headlines. By the very nature of their development, network printers and MFPs are security risks if not managed

correctly. This also holds true for wide format MFPs, if not more so, because of the building plans, maps, and electrical drawings running through these machines. Security may be even more important in these cases.

Advanced network connectivity options open ports to hackers. Industry-standard Java and Web browser design elements are vulnerable to virus attack. Large hard drives store a latent copy of every document flowing through the device for years. Devices link directly to core network components such as the LDAP address list or the central file server. Plus, fast communication options let insiders send information to the outside with no method of being traced.

Security and data compliance buzzwords and regulations such as Common Criteria certification, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm Leach Bliley, FERPA, SEC, FISMA, and the Patriot Act look to safeguard information and force companies to conform to best practices in document and data security management.

Safeguarding Data

Most printers, MFPs and wide format devices now offer a standard or optional hard drive. Any company dealing in critical, sensitive information should determine if they need data-overwrite capability that has passed Common Criteria (CC) certification. Data overwrite deletes information on the hard drive by writing a series of random ones and zeros over the sectors storing data, usually multiple times. The CC test relates to how data is deleted from a device’s hard drive after being used. CC certification is carried out by a government-approved test facility. Many manufacturers get CC certification to satisfy government security requirements, and it is a requisite for many government agencies and contractors. Most MFP devices pass evaluation assurance level (EAL) 2, with some aiming higher at EAL 3. The higher the level, the more extensive the testing, and the more secure the hard drive is considered.

Controlling Access

One of the keys to security is limiting the initial access to the device both remotely and at the device itself. TCP/IP and MAC filtering allow the administrator to limit remote access to the device. MAC filtering is more secure; the TCP/IP address can be copied, but the MAC address is a fixed specification that cannot be changed. IPv6 is now

becoming commonplace on network devices. IPv6 also makes it harder to crack or hack into a PC address range by making the address more complex.

Network authentication is now available on nearly every MFP and printer, forcing users to enter a user name and password before access to the device is granted. Most devices can verify a user by linking to Windows Exchange user lists, Novell network user lists, and LDAP server lists. There should also be password encryption at the point of the login process through SSL or other encryption or security technology (such as Kerberos), preventing hackers from watching and capturing user names and IDs as they travel through the network.

Accessibility

In the United States, Section 508 legislation prohibits government agencies from purchasing devices that are not accessible to those with physical impairments. For this reason—and the corporate world’s

increased focus on delivering a better work environment for all—user-friendly features for physically-impaired users are more common. Common design features include tilting control panels, which give wheelchair-bound users a better view of the screen, and larger display options for those with impaired vision.

Voice navigation and Braille also are becoming increasingly popular. Easy access to the paper path for jam removal or front access to ink supplies can make a device more user-friendly to all.

Users can switch the language displayed on the control panel on the fly. Within Express WebTools users can choose two primary languages from a list of 20 supported languages.

User Accessibility to Device Controls

The Océ ColorWave 300 system features a color operation panel that is navigated using a scroll wheel. The wheel is found on the right side of the user panel and allows the user to scroll through templates, settings and setting values. As the user scrolls through a setting the selected setting is highlighted with a black background and white text, which will improve navigation for the visually impaired. We also noticed that the operation panel can be adjusted to different angles and positions to better fit the various heights of different users. User Accessibility for Printed Media

The Océ ColorWave 300 system features a top delivery paper output feature, which should be accessible from a seated position. User Accessibility for Scanned Media

The Océ ColorWave 300 scanned document output is redirected to the front of the scanner, making it easy to grab and remove the scanned document. User Accessibility for Media Refilling

The Océ ColorWave 300 paper rolls can easily be replaced from a seated position. The media rolls are accessed at the front of the machine. User Accessibility for Media Jam Removal

Wheelchair users should be able to view messages on the operation panel screen, indicating that there is a paper jam. With the device’s short paper path, wheelchair users should be able to handle any jam that occurs with the same ease as a standing user. User Accessibility for Routine Maintenance

The ink tanks are conveniently located in the front right side of the device. Replacing the ink tank can be accomplished fairly easy for wheelchair users. Replacing the maintenance tray can also be easily replaced by wheelchair users. Replacing the printheads will be a challenge for wheelchair users because of their location on the top right side of the printer. WHAT WE LIKED

Wheelchair users should be able to access the control panel, replace the ink containers and any paper jams.

The Océ ColorWave 300 system is Section 508 compliant.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

The control panel screen does not offer a mode in which device options are shown in an enlarged mode.

Some users may have difficulty seeing some of the control panel options.

We would have also like being able to change the printheads from a seated position. Wheelchair users will not be able to change the printheads because of their location and visibility level.
