Wide Open Customs Fairing Installation 2007 V Star 1300 I purchased a fairing from Wide Open Customs out of Oswego Kansas. The fairing was made with good quality materials. Here is the link to the company that supplied the fairing http://www.wideopencustom.com/dotnetnuke/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx . I created these instructions for the actual mounting of the fairing to the motorcycle. Wide Open Customs has excellent instructions for mounting the stereo and the windshield on their web site so I won’t redo what they have already done. During my installation I noticed the fairing coming in contact with the front brake line and the throttle cables so much so that the brake line was crimped. So I decided that the windshield brackets had to be repositioned forward from their stock location using new bolts and nylon spacers. The top fh b k f d 3/4 f i h dh l fh b k df d of the bracket was move forward approx 3/4 of an inch and the lower part of the bracket was movedforward approx 3/8 inch. This will give plenty of clearance to the cable and prevent binding, and unless someone gets really close to inspect your handy work they won’t even know that you moved the brackets. I attempted to make these instructions as complete as possible but every installation will have its own challenges. NOTE: Remember to keep all of the original bolts and washers in the event you want to reinstall your windshield down the road. I would like to thank Boomer Sooner for his input into making these instructions . Materials Needed (I purchased all the bolts, washers and nylon spacers at my local Lowes home improvement store). Wide Open Customs Fairing Installation 2007 V Star 1300

I purchased a fairing from Wide Open Customs out of Oswego Kansas.  The fairing was madewith good quality materials. Here is the link to the company that supplied the fairing http://www.wideopencustom.com/dotnetnuke/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx.I created these instructions for the actual mounting of the fairing to the motorcycle. Wide Open Customs has excellent instructions for mounting the stereo and the windshield on their web site so I won’t redo what they have already done. During my installation I noticed the fairing coming in contact with the front brakeline and  the throttle cables  so much so that the brake line was crimped. So I decided that the windshield brackets had to be repositioned forward  from their stock location using new bolts and nylon spacers. The top f h b k f d 3/4 f i h d h l f h b k d f dof the bracket was move forward approx 3/4 of an inch and the lower part of the bracket was moved forward

approx 3/8 inch.

Passing Lamps

If you have passing lamps as I do you will have to move them out of the way in order to get to the two lower windshieldbracket support bolts There are three bolts that hold the light tobracket support bolts. There are three bolts that hold the light toit’s mount, when I installed my lights I left out the middlebolt, so these instructions I’m just removing the two bottomoutside bolts, if you have all three then the middle bolt willalso have to be removed.

Cover the front fender and let the passing lamps rest on  itonce it’s unbolted.

Important Note about Clutch Cable Routing

Clutch CableRemoved from the wire hoop

Turn Signal CablingRemains in the wire hoop

When I replaced the  windshield brackets I removed the clutch cable from the large part of the cable hoop and left the turn signal cable in it to give me someextra slack in the clutch cable when turning the front wheel,  you will need to checkyour clearances to see if this is necessary for your installation. If you need todo as I did you will have to bend open the hoop and push the clutch cable out of the hoop, then close up the hoop leaving the turn signal wire in the hoop.  NOTE:When you place the left (as sitting)windshield bracket back on the forksthe bracket needs to go in front of the clutch cable and the turn signal cable, this is necessary to give enough slack in the cables during turning. On the other side the brake, throttle, and electrical cable seemed to have plenty of slack so I just routed them where they fit bestof slack, so I just routed them where they fit best.

Power supply cable for the fairing

Replace the windshield mounting brackets back onto the forks, makesure that you assemble the bottom bolts and spacers first, install looselythen work on the top bolts and spacers, this is especially true if you have passing

Bottom bolts, metal washer, bracket then 1 nylon spacers each side.

lamps because of the way the bracket is shaped, if you do the top firstyou won’t be able to get the bottom hole lined up. NOTE: be very careful when threading in the top bolts, the tree is aluminum and you can cross thread the holes and that could require a new tree, everything should go together just by using your fingers to start every bolt. Use locktite on the bolts.

Electrical Connections to the Fairing

The fairing is supplied with it’s own power cable, I wired the powerbl l h h ( h d l ) h dcable to a 4 post relay as shown here (purchased separately) using a switched power

source so the radio goes on and off with the key. I placed the relay on the rightside of the battery (as seated) and ran the wires under the tank up to the fairing running it through the wire hoop next to the top bolt of the windshield mount.

Protecting the paint

Because the fairing is a tight fit around the headlight bucket I tookseveral small pieces of the loop part of some self stick velcro and stuck it to the underside of the fairing where it made contact with the bucketthis should prevent the paint from getting damaged by vibrations. The velcro is not visible when the fairing is mountedvelcro is not visible when the fairing is mounted.

Mounting the fairing to the windshield mounts.

Mounting the fairing to the windshield brackets will require using the h b l l h d / /remaining 4ea, 8mm hex bolts, 4ea, 8mm metal washers and 4ea, ½ x 3/8 x 3/8

nylon spacers. Place the metal washer on the 8mm hex bolt pass through the top slot in the fairing bracket and then using a pair of needle nose pliers hold the nylon spacer between the fairing mounting plate and the windshield mount and loosely thread the bolt, repeat the procedure for the remaining bolts. Adjust the fairing so that it does not cause any binding or pinching of the clutch cable throttle cable orthat it does not cause any binding or pinching of the clutch cable , throttle cable or any of the electrical cables that are mounted to the handle bars.  Once everything is aligned tighten the bolts.NOTE: It’s up to you whether you want to use loctite on these bolts, if you do removingthe fairing will be more difficult.

Reinstall the passing lights

Reinstall the passing lights that were removed earlier, replacethe 8mm hex bolts to the bottom of the lights into the mountingbracket. In my case I only use the outer two bolts and omittedhe center bolt. Remember the locktite.

Radio Antenna

I found this small radio antenna at my local “Pep Boys” auto parts store, it has a power booster and I thought it was a betterchoice than using the one that comes with the fairing if you orderchoice than using the one that comes with the fairing if you orderit with the stereo option.

Here is the view of the stereo, I also added my XM radio To the mix.
