Types of Work-Integrated Education (WIE) Activities
1. Full-time internship (during Spring / Summer, CAPS’ Mainland
WIE Programme)
2. Part-time internship
3. Internships on an ad-hoc project basis
4. Attending WIE training workshops organized/approved by the
Faculty (max. 30 hours could be counted)
5. Setting up and running your own business
6. Participations in business competitions
7. Participations in community services
8. Holding leadership positions in FB’s student bodies including
HKPUSU, FBSA, AFS, LMSS, and MMS

Types of Activities NOT Recognized for WIE
• Private tutoring (unless it is done via a tutoring centre)
• Engagement in dangerous, unethical, or illegal
activities

Before the internship
1. Prepare a professional resume
You can join the resume writing workshops offered by FB EDGE
Programme and PolyU CAPS office – details will be informed to you later
by emails.
2. Find the internship opportunities
Students should take the initiative to find their own internship. Other
possible ways include:
• FB WIE Online System
• Emails from WIE team of your school/department
• JIJIS website
• Job searching websites, newspapers, etc.
3. Seek career advices from WIE Coordinator of your school/department before
confirmation / commencement of any internship
4. For self-sourced placement, submit the completed WIE form F6 to WIE team
of your school/dept (also F3 for AF students) for seeking the endorsement
from WIE Coordinator before confirmation to any internship

During the internship
5. Seek support from FB/Departmental Coordinator
For any matters, such as extension of internship period, minimum wage
ordinance, MPF, insurance, or any conflict with the company, please
contact WIE office of your school/department or FB WIE office
([email protected]). They will consult your school/departmental WIE
Coordinator if needed.
After the internship
6. Complete self-evaluation via FB WIE Online System within 7 days of the
internship completion
7. Complete employer evaluation WIE Form F15 and submit to FB WIE team (for
FB-sourced internships) /WIE team of your school/department (for self-sourced or
department-sourced internships) within 7 days of the internship completion

WIE Forms Submission
● If you have finished WIE placement(s) and wish to have the WIE hours
claims updated in a particular semester, please remember to submit all the
WIE forms (to FBWIE office or WIE office of your school/department) as
well as to complete the online self-evaluation (done via FB WIE Online
System) by last teaching week of that semester, i.e.:
Week 13 of Semester 1 & 2
Week 7 of Semester 3 (Summer Semester)
● If you fail to do so, your WIE claims will be processed in next semester
(can delay your graduation if that is your last semester)

Important Notes
Be an intern with discipline, responsibility, trustworthiness, integrity and honesty – you are not only representing yourself, but also your department and the University.
The Faculty of Business will issue warning letter to you if you have committed any of the following:● Not showing up in interviews without notification to the internship offering
organization, ● Not showing up at work without notification to the internship offering
organization, ● Quit the internship without sound and valid reason.
Don’t simply ask your classmates or seniors about any WIE matter as their understanding may not be 100% correct or in line with requirements and procedures.

Important Notes
Serious consequences if you do not obtain prior endorsement by WIE Coordinator of
your department in your WIE Form F6 before you commences your internship:
● Your application for the internship may definitely not be endorsed and approved
retrospectively – which means the hours that you worked or may work for WIE
will not be counted,
● You are not going to be covered by the top-up insurance, in addition to the
University’s Group Personal Accident, specially provided during your internship
period,
● all non-local students cannot legally participate in internship programmes if the
internship programmes are not endorsed by your WIE Coordinator.
Serious consequence if your WIE Form F15 does not submit on time (i.e. within 7
days of internship completion):
● Though you have completed your internship, the hours that you have worked for
WIE will not be finally approved and counted

WIE IS a subject (FB3001 Work-Integrated Education):
● The subject FB3001 will be automatically registered and a “pass”
grade will be granted in that particular semester which you have
completed the 300 internship hours AND submitted all the relevant FB
WIE Forms (all done before the last teaching week)
● For AF students who haven’t completed WIE requirement in Year 1 –
3, FB3001 will be automatically registered for you in Sem 1 of your
final year.
● WIE is a subject which carries credit load (same as other academic
subjects). Please bear this in mind while scheduling your study plan
(e.g. exchange studies, part-time mode of study, zero subject
enrolment, etc.)

Allowances / Subsidies / Insurances
• Allowances at employers’ discretion
Full-time (approx. $2,500 to $9,000 per month)
Part-time (approx. $30 to $50 per hour)
• PolyU subsidize expenditures for overseas-based internships
(Offshore WIE Sponsorship for UGC-funded students
administered by Office of Careers and Placement Services )
• Insurance coverage of $500,000 world-wide
PolyU degree’s students taking on-the-job training
internships at organizations are not considered "relevant
employees" and thus the MPF Ordinance does not apply.
However, if there is an employment relationship between
the student and the offering organization for a continuous
period of not less than 60 days
MPF Ordinance have to be applied

Students who intend to participate in any internship placements in
Hong Kong should take note that the Minimum Wage Ordinance
(MWO) has already come into force from 1 May 2011.
With effect from 1 May 2015, the Statutory Minimum Wage (SMW) rate
is revised to $32.5 per hour.
The Minimum Wage Ordinance does not apply to interns/students with
no employment relationship with the host organization or company.

Minimum Wage Ordinance
All non-local students are supposed to have two “No Objection
Letters (NOLs)” issued by the HKSAR Immigration Department:
NOL (1) is for Study/curriculum-related internship, i.e. a
placement which counts towards WIE, whichever is full-
time/part-time or on-campus/off-campus placement;
NOL (2) for Part-time on-campus employment and employment
during summer months (i.e. 1 Jun – 31 Aug), i.e. part-time on-
campus job and summer job but not counting towards WIE.

NOL (1) – study/curriculum related internship (counting towards WIE)
For students to do study-related internship placement(s) while the total duration is up to one year, or one-third of the normal duration of the programme , whichever is shorter.
This NOL will only be valid for one academic year and will only be issued as long as the student has not reached the limit set for taking up internship.
Such internship placement can only be legally commenced with the prior endorsement by your WIE coordinator.
NOL (2) – part-time on-campus employment and employment during
summer months (not counting towards WIE)
This NOL covers the normal study period of the programme, i.e. 4 years for 4-year BBA programme.
For students to do part-time on-campus job which will not be counted for WIE (≤ 20 hours/week), e.g. student helper, with no limitation on the period of time.
For students to do summer job, not internship, during the period 1 Jun – 31 Aug. No endorsement from the University will be required if this will not be used for WIE fulfilment.
Non-Local Students
Secure internship placement (with company acceptance
letter or contract).
DO NOT start your internship without the endorsement
from your WIE Coordinator.

Non-Local Students
As students under age 18 do not have full legal capacity,
students should complete the form WIE-F27-Letter of Consent
for WIE to seek the consent from parents / guardians.
The completed form should be returned to WIE team of your
school/department (for self-sourced or department-sourced
internships) and FB WIE team (for FB-sourced internships) to
seek the approval before the internship placement
commencement.

Points to Note
Keep a balanced timetable to accomplish all your tasks during your period of study (study, internship, exchange, student activities…etc.), make plans beforehand
Abide by the rules and regulations of your host WIE organization
Ensure WIE procedures as required are complied
Seek advice from your WIE coordinator when problem arises

Advice from AF WIE Coordinator
Be proactive always – we are criticized as stronger in technical and
professional skills in workplace but passive and lack of confidence in
participation and expression
Be equipped with high level of English proficiency (if not
Putonghua) – it is vital for all students to impress their
interviewers/employers in the workplace.
Working with team-working ability and interpersonal skills - able to
learn how to cooperate with others, appreciate others’ effort and share both
joy and sadness from the work assignment
Bear in mind the three key attributes for an ideal “thinking”
accountant – they are responsibility, integrity and technical
competence
4 “Cs” – competence, communication, confidence and more important,
commitment
