FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
November 2019
The end of another year approaches, with a slight growth in our club numbers – thanks to all our enthusiastic new members !
CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Club Christmas Party is on December 8th at Wells Park Kwinana Beach. (as per details on Trip Sheet).
Sausage Sizzle, cold drinks and dessert will be supplied by the Club. Please BYO alcohol and any special requirements / foods
etc.
Santa will be there with gifts for the children.
We would love to see as many members and families there as possible – should be a great day.
If you are coming along, please make sure your name is on the Trip Sheet by the end of this week’s General Meeting.
This will be our Last Hurrah for the year, as there is no December meeting.
Footnote:
We have two pop-up Surf Club Events which are being organised now.
For those of you who are not familiar with these events, we offer our services to Secret Harbour Surf Club for their surf carni-
vals.
Our Club helps with the movement of surf boats on and off the beach during the event.
It’s generally an early start (mad panic!) in the morning. Once all the boats are on the beach, you are welcome to stay and
watch the carnival, or disappear and come back later. Removal of the boats is slow and steady, as they are eliminated from
the competition.
Further information is available on trip sheets.
See you all at the Christmas Party !
Cheers
Rothy.
Brisey’s Buldust
The new Patrol performed quite well on the Wilbinga trip a few weeks ago,
apart from driver error after a wrong turn onto the beach & getting bogged to
the chassis. Early in the trip I was having a bit of trouble selecting low range
I’m used to the lever actuation in the old car, this electronic selection is taking
a bit to get used to. If I was to complain about anything I think the transmis-
sion is a bit too lazy taking a bit too long to decide to change down at times, I
will have to use the sports shift especially on hill climbs. Otherwise the car
went really well, there is certainly enough power to do the job.
Some people can certainly end up in some strange situations on the road. A few
Mondays ago there was an accident on the Tonkin Hwy southbound near Collier
Rd. I was driving north at the time going to the project & as I passed the acci-
dent site, I saw the car sitting on top of the wire rope barrier. There seemed
no possible way the car could have gotten up onto the top of the barrier unless
it fell off a truck, but this wasn’t the case. This makes 3 times I know of that
a car has ended up on top of the wire rope now in the last 6 months.
This will be the final magazine for this year as there is no general meeting in
December so Julie & I would like to wish all the members and your families the
best of Christmas wishes and a brilliant start to the New Year until we see you
all again at the trip planning meeting
Cheers
Brisey
FISH & CHIPS
Skills2fish would like to wish everyone a merry and safe xmas and a happy new year.
Just reminder on the crab and Demersal ban on at present ending on the 30th November for crab season
and Demersal ban finishing finishing on the 16th the December.
It is looking to be a bumper crab season with a looks being caught on my recent fishing trip in Mandurah
pulling up sized crabs through out the day on the baited lines some times double headers... I can not wait
to get into them.
FISHING GEAR SELECTION
There are a few essential items to consider when buying your tackle box of fishing gear. First up,

OUT & ABOUT ON TRIPS
Wilbinga We had a very good turn out for this trip with 12 cars including 2 visitors.
After the obligatory breakfast at Hungary Jacks we held a short trip briefing before leaving for the Pinjar power
station to play on the hills. During morning tea a member,we shall not identify, found a flat tyre on his Great Wall
4x4 which required attention before moving along. From the sidelines it looked like the tyre had rolled off the rim.
Travelling north along a good limestone track saw us making good headway to the Tuart road turn off for Wilbinga.
I haven’t ben on this trip for about 5 years so I was a bit surprised at the nice drive along Tuart road, the last time I
did this trip it was very slow going along soft sandy ruts.
Wilbinga road surprised me as well—it had been graded for the first 7-8 kms.
The tracks were tight, scratchy, lumpy & bumpy just the way we like them. All went really good until a wrong turn
saw another member, that shall not be identified, on the beach bogged down to the chassis of the new Nissan
needing just a little help to get mobile again.
Cheers
Brisey

PRODUCT REVIEW
AUTO SKIN TEMPORARY PAINT PROTECTION
I first read about Auto Skin in a product review in the
Western 4 Wheel Driver magazine a year or two ago. After I
bought the new Patrol I did some searches online but was
struggling to find a supplier in WA then eventually found it
at TJM in Myaree and bought a bottle.
The product is thick and looks very
similar to woodworking glue. It can
be applied by paintbrush or roller
and dries to a clearish matt finish.
Removing the coating is reasonably easy by hosing
small areas and once softened hose again with a bit of
pressure then peel off or rub with a car wash mitt or
similar. A Karcher makes the job somewhat easier. It
sticks really well to plastic surfaces and takes a bit
more work to get it off. I found that putting a wet
chamois on the area for a while to soak in worked well
PRODUCT REVIEW
The Wilbinga trip certainly tested this product with very close scratchy bushes constantly
in contact with the car. At the end of the day while airing up I was thinking there is no way
I have escaped with no scratches after having a look at the guards. The bushes had certain-
ly left their mark on the sides as you can see in the photo below.
After cleaning the car up I am very pleased (and surprised) to say there are no scratches
on the panels, it has worked very well indeed.
To sum up the product:
It is reasonably expensive at $179.00 for 4 litres but I have used a bit less than 1/2 litre
per side of the Patrol so I can probably get 4 trips out of the container.
It works well protecting from brush scratching but I don’t expect it to handle the sharp
branches that quite often stick out into the tracks.
It takes a bit of work to remove but no harder than polishing a car.
It wouldn’t be any good during rainy weather or river crossings as it would start peeling off.

ARTICLES OF INTEREST
DUAL BATTERIES IN NEW CARS
Charging auxiliary batteries in new cars is becoming a bit of an issue. The new Patrol (along
with most other new cars) have a variable voltage alternator. This means the vehicle ECU
monitors the outgoing power consumption from the battery and controls the charge voltage
output of the alternator to suit. This is the latest innovation to lower fuel consumption and
raise the power output of the motor.
In my old GU I mounted an AGM battery in the rear and used a Ridge Rider (from Super-
cheap) DCDC battery charger. The setup worked very well with the auxiliary battery keep-
ing close to full charge most of the time.
I transferred the battery and charger into the new Patrol and have been having problems
with the charger cutting out and not restarting. The problem is with the smart alternator
output voltage dropping when the starter battery is approaching full charge. I have been
monitoring the voltage and have seen it hover between 12.1 to 12.5 volts indicating to me
the alternator has turned off or only trickle charging. The DCDC charger turns off at about
12.5 volts and doesn’t switch back on until 12.8 volts.
Some people have suggested to get the alternator reprogrammed. I have enquired with Nis-
san Australia and they said that can’t be done.
There is a Patrol Y62 Facebook group that is discussing modifications to stop the smart
charging, one of whom says they get an occasional fault code come up but OK after reset-
ting with the Scanguage. I would imagine that a modification like this would void the war-
ranty and could cause some secondary damage to other systems. It would probably lead to
over charging the starter battery due to no charge regulation of the alternator.
Anyway the thought of modifying the electrical system of a brand new car doesn’t seem like
a sensible thing to do to me.
I have been doing some research and have found there are some new DCDC chargers, which
turn off at 11.9 volts, now available that work with these smart alternators .
The 3 I have found that seem to be the best are:
Redark BCDC 1220 costing over $600.00
Projecta IDC25 costing about $280.00
KickAss KADCDC25A costing about $280.00
I have just bought the Projeta charger and it worked well on the Swag trip. A product re-
view will follow in the next magazine.
Cheers Brisey
FOR SALE
I found my DCDC charger wasn’t compatible with the smart variable voltage alternator in my car & I was
having trouble keeping my auxiliary battery charged. After some research I have just bought a new
Projecta DCDC charger. My Ridge Ryder brand DCDC charger is now surplus and up for sale.
Easy to connect up just run 8AWG cable from the starter battery to the charger then to the auxiliary
battery, the charger starts charging automatically when the starter battery reaches 12.8 volts and stops
charging automatically when the starter battery drops to 12.5 volts.
Charges lead acid, AGM & gel batteries
