WES THOMPSON DIRECTOR

I joined H.O.G. National in 2001 when I bought my first Harley from Rocky Mountain H-D. I joined the Rocky Mountain Chapter in 2002, and I have never looked back. Rocky Mountain Harley has always been a part of my life since I was a teenager. My father and I would go into the original store all the time to look at bikes and to see what was coming in. I used to play the games they had in the store and I still have a token from way back then. I bought my first pair of chaps from the Broadway store when I used to ride crotch rockets. Rocky has always felt like home to me. Kathy and Vinny and the whole staff have always made me feel welcome. I have so many memories over the years, and hope to have so many more.

SHAD ADAMS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

WOW!! Can you believe we are at the half-way point of 2018? So far, this has been a phenomenal year with great rides and events. Some of those events have been the monthly pizza nights at Children’s Hospital. I know I say this over and over, but without sponsors and volunteers, we would not be able to continue to do what we do for the patients and families. Some of these families spend extended stays at the hospital and sometimes it is a different face offering a slice of pizza that can make just a single day better.

We all love to spend time at Children’s Hospital and do not ever expect anyone to praise us for what we do, however, from

INFORMATION ON UPCOMING RUNS, RIDES AND EVENTS

• David Uhl Studio Visit - June 16

• The Ice Cream Run - June24

• Evening Poker Run - July 7

• Ham and Egg Run- July 14

For those who do not know what the Ham and Egg ride is, it is a ride where you are issued a raw egg at registration and at each stop you will play a game which will put your egg in danger of breaking. You will be awarded points at each stop depending on how well you play the game. The object is to make it through the day with your egg intact, and accumulate the most points.

Its a fun twist on a poker run, and has been brought back because it was always a favorite of many of our members in years past. I want to thank Stuff and Jesse Rincon, Sonya and Charlie Chitwood and Tracy and Jim Hammons, for coming up with this ride and putting it together for so many years in the past. I’m hoping to entice them into helping out again this year, because I know how much everyone (including them) loves this ride.

Please see me or any other officer if you would like to volunteer to help on any upcoming rides. We need lots of volunteers to pull off these rides, and its a great way to meet your fellow chapter members and get involved.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! LET’S RIDE!!

Well, that’s about it for me for this edition...I’m Eddie...YOUR Activities Officer...and...I...am...OUT! ◄

Get Involved with YOUR Chapter!Participation in Chapter events is a great way to meet other members and it keeps our Chapter strong. No one expects you to be able to make each and every

ride, so join us for the ones you can and let’s HAVE FUN!!

time to time we do get a thank you card or note from a family member. I would like to share a couple notes from this past month.

“I wanted to take a moment to extend a huge thank you for the pizza at Children’s Hospital. My son had not eaten a meal in the week we had been here. He ate an entire slice and a half of pizza. It was nice to see him eat for a change. You brought smiles to many people. What a kind gesture that you have given to all of us.

Thank you!!!!”_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

“Harley Davidson, Thank you for making a difficult time a little more pleasant. We enjoyed and appreciated the pizza as well as the coffee and tea. Your kindess is appreciated. Love, The Krentz Family”_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Folks, this is why we do what we do, not for the thank you card, but knowing that we do make a difference for those that must spend time at Children’s Hospital. Thanks to all of you that give your time to help us.

A big thank you goes out to “The Lodge Casino” who sponsored May pizza night. As I have mentioned, 2018 has sponsor for every month, but we will take donations for Christmas in July, to help off set cost of drinks, sides and such.

If you or anyone you know wants to sponsor a month in 2019 I will be happy to get that set up. Contact me at: [email protected].

Pizza night is the 4th Tuesday of every month. Meet in lobby around 5:30pm and we normally start serving pizza at 6:00pm and done by 7:00pm. 13123 E. 16th Ave, Aurora, CO 80045

COLORADO AND BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON H.O.G RALLY

Would you like to spend four days and three nights in the beautiful state of Colorado? In September you can do just that when you attend the touring rally in that starts in Denver heading to Glenwood Springs on to Gunnison and then back to Denver.

Spend a fun night in the Mile-High City before climbing into the mountains toward Glenwood Springs. Your second day offers a very special treat - a ride through the thrilling Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, over two million years in the making. Several canyons of the American West are longer and some are deeper, but none combines the depth, sheerness, narrowness, darkness, and excitement of the Black Canyon. Finally, head back to Denver through 10,000 ft (3048 m) mountain passes, deep green valleys, sweeping meadows, and endless miles of winding roads.

This year H.O.G. has teamed up with Eagle Travel to provide options for the Touring Rally. Eagle Rider will take care of all the details for you, including motorcycle rental, hotel reservations and door to door luggage service. This option includes support chase vehicle. For pricing visit members.hog.com, Events, Rallys, select the HOG logo in the state of Colorado on the US map. Once you have booked you can speak with Eagle Travel for package price.

Option two allows you to ride your own bike but let Eagle Rider take care of the hotel bookings. Again, visit members.hog.com and register for the rally and then speak with Eagle Rider for pricing.

You always have the option of registering for the rally and riding your own and taking care of your accomidations and transporting your luggage yourself. You will still need to register at members.hog.com. The website has additional information about lodging in each destination city, check in time, etc. Rally dates are September 19th through September 22nd. The deadline to register for the rally is September 19th, however capacity is limited and registration will close once full.

For any questions contact, Bill Davis – Rally Coordinator – 760-644-2118 – )[email protected]. ◄

PATTI PROFFITTLOH OFFICER

Just wanted to thank everyone that came out to the LOH Throwback Party in May. It was a fun evening at The Ranch with some very original costumes, great oldies music provided by Bob Cuculich and photos that truly had us stumped. The evening concluded with singing and dancing. How could it be that Red knows all the words to all the oldies songs?

The June LOH dinner will be June 20th at the Buckskin Saloon in Sedalia 6:00 pm as usual.

A huge thank you to everyone who is coming out for the LOH events. It’s your participation that make our events successful and fun.

FIVE-STATE POKER RUNThe Five-State Poker Run was held on the second weekend of May and you ride into five states during the poker run. We rode down to Oklahoma on Friday, the poker run was Saturday and then returned on Sunday. The Iron Thunder Motorcycle Club started the poker run in 2003 and all profits go back to the local community, so not only is it a fun ride, it’s for a good cause and with over 1,000 motorcycles participating, it was another successful year.

Because the run takes place around the panhandle of Oklahoma, it’s not as daunting as you might think to get to five states in only 300 miles. The poker run goes from Guymon, OK, to Stratford, TX, over to Clayton, NM, then somewhere in the middle of nowhere Baca County, CO, then to Elkhart, KS and finishes back in Guymon, OK.

This year’s ride had the best weather in years. It was clear and warm on the ride down to and back home from Guymon. The poker run itself was nice and warm with high temperatures in the upper 80’s. The best part of all though was there was no wind for a change. It can get really windy down there, but this year the wind took a break.

There were five of us on the ride this year and we had a great time. On the ride down, Richard, Barry and Charles stopped in Trinidad to get a stop on the RMH-D Three Nines Tour. Chuck and Bob got it on their ride home. If this sounds like something you’d like to try, talk to any of us that went on the ride and we’ll be happy to let you know what you need to do to join us next year. ◄

Hi, I’m Bob!

Group motorcycle riding can and should be a very rewarding experience. After all, isn’t it usually better to have someone to share experiences with while on the road rather than going it alone? I know, there is something to be said about the lone wolf aspect of riding, however, I have found some of my most memorable riding experiences came while riding in the company of others.

See the article “Group Riding Tips - Vehicle Passing Techniques on page 13.

Well, I’ve got to get back to work. When I stop rowing, the slave ship just goes in circles. ◄

THROWBACK PARTYCool! Groovey! Bitchin’! Rad! Dude! Whatever expression you used when younger, they all applied to this fun night. It was a throwback party to celebrate our lost youth.

We met at The Ranch Smokehouse and had great food and even better music playing for over three hours. Even though this was sort of a “last minute” party, we had a great turnout of about 20 people. Some dressed up as they did back in the day and some came dressed as usual. It didn’t matter because everyone had a fun time. Several people brought in photos of themselves from ‘yesteryear’ and we tried to guess who they were. Not many were successful at guessing who everyone was.

Going to keep this recap short so there’s more room for photos, but have to let everyone know that the ‘stars’ of the night were Red and Tyler. They knew all the words to songs regardless of how long ago they came out...VERY IMPRESSIVE guys! ◄

WILD HOG RIDE

giant white grins, having loved the 408-mile ride route, while wiped out from battling some of the strongest winds most have experienced.

After cooling down, and grabbing some dinner, we all gathered for community commaradarie, door prizes, 50/50 and some even stayed for the screening of the movie World’s Fastest Indian, while others retreated to the pool and/or in search of icy refreshments. Ken and Loni, after some generous winner-swapping, were the Grand Prize winners of a 45-minute sight-seeing flight, not far above tree-top levels, over Northern New Mexico on Saturday morning. We had a number of great door prizes, including those from our own chapter members, C.A.R.S. (Charlie Chitwood), Rib City (Jim Courtis), and of course our “home” dealership – Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson. Thank you for your generosity. At least 12 people won back their “participation fee”. And we searched for the oldest and youngest riders there – (72 and 18, respectively), by the way. Our youngest rider (Hunter, I believe) was awarded his own DVD of the “Wild Hogs” movie.

Saturday morning began with the Wild Hogs all gathering at the Santa Fe airport to welcome Loni and Ken back from their journey and were paraded onto the tarmac for a group photo around the airplane. Our friend Bruce Adams, owner/pilot of Southwest Safaris, has now done this three times for our group. From there, the group made its way to Albuquerque for a brief visit to Thunderbird H-D and the obligatory tee shirt shopping.

Broken into smaller groups, the riders then ventured up the Turquoise Trail (route 14) and ascended the road to Sandia Peak, at 10,425 feet, while navigating the ±15 switchbacks and rolling twisties to the top. The views over Albuquerque were stunning, although a little smoky from the not-too-distant forest fires. Then, on down the mountain and up the Trail to our final destination – Madrid, N.M. Some stopped for the incredible green chili at the Mineshaft Restaurant (but don’t drink the water), some only went on to the infamous ice cream shop, while several of us were forced to do both. Maggie’s Diner (“this is not a food place, just a t-shirt shop”, reads the sign) provided the t-shirts (Wild Hogs and Del Fuegos, of course) and coffee mugs that I was in search of.

Saturday ended back at the Sage Inn, with many in search of the bottom of a cold beer bottle, or margarita glass, gathering around the bar and the pool for more story-telling, making of new friends, and renewal of old friendships.

Sunday’s departure was “OYO” (on your own), with small groups gathering for the ride home or other destinations together. The clouds were ominous and we all began on dry roads, however that didn’t last for long. While praying for the tail-wind that never came, many had the pleasure of experiencing the joys of living in the Rockies – this time from the previous day’s almost oppressive heat, to a bone-chilling rainstorm. Fire & Ice! With Wind! We were already hearing the stories Sunday night, many of which will be told repeatedly on future rides, only slightly embellished, certainly. Patti, herself, will have a good story to tell her grandsons one day. While another person we know well will be telling about the new voltage regulator he’s been carrying in his saddlebags for seven years, just in case of emergency… there is more to that story, too.

All in all, an epic journey of nearly 1,000 miles, that will not be soon forgotten. Unanimously, all seem to have had a great time and experienced memory-making rides. What a wonderful group of people are our members, our friends.◄

GROUP RIDING TIPS - VEHICLE PASSING TECHNIQUES

\ BOB SUMRALL, SAFETY OFFICER

An instance where you may ramp up your speed when group riding is when you pass another vehicle, especially a semi-tractor trailer. It is never recommended to hang around the turbulence of a larger vehicle. The recommended method, is to speed up, pass the vehicle, and continue to accelerate past the vehicle so that you can leave enough room for one or two more riders to join you. You then signal your intention to regain the right lane, then do so. The configuration of the road comes in to play here as well.

1. Signal your intent, make sure you can see both headlights of the vehicle you have just passed in your rear view mire, then regain the lane while continuing to accelerate slightly. If you use this method, you should never be perceived as “cutting off” another driver.

2. In regards to regaining the lane in front of a semi-tractor trailer, keep in mind, that the long hood of their truck gives them a greater blind spot in front of their vehicle. Once you have passed the semi, wait until you can see the top of the driver’s cab in your rear view mirror before regaining the lane. As when passing a smaller vehicle, continue to accelerate slightly as you regain the lane. Also, don’t forget to signal prior to regaining the lane.

3. In a group, the leader positions him/herself in close proximity to the left rear corner of the bumper of the vehicle to be passed. Once the leader begins to overtake the vehicle to be passed, each subsequent rider must adjust their position to maintain the stagger formation. When each rider, in turn, is sure the way is clear to make the pass, do so quickly and decisively.

4. Once the leader overtakes the vehicle, the leader only may remain on the left side of the road until all others in the group have passed. He is “blocking” the lane. He is letting you know that it is still safe for the rest of the group to complete the pass. Obviously not recommended to face oncoming traffic. Once the sweep has completed the pass and moved back to the right side of the road, he will radio to the lead, all clear. The lead rider will then move back over to the right and join/lead the group.

5. Side-by-Side Formations. Avoid side-by-side formations as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have the room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. ◄

FIND THE CHANGES IN THE PHOTO ON PAGE 15This month’s challenge is to find the changes I have made to the bottom photo on the next page. The top photo is the original and the bottom photo has been altered. The only hint is that there are twelve changes made. The first person to send an email to the editor ([email protected]) with all twelve correct answers will win a prize at the June Chapter meeting.

Good luck and have fun. ◄

THE TIME HAS COMEThere it sat, in the back of the barn, for over a year

Covered with dust, saddle bags still packed with his gearI could see the front tire was low, the same with the rear

And I knew he was with me, so we sat down and shared a beer

With a lonesome shove, I pushed it up, then out, and aroundThe brake pads scraped the rotors, with a dry metallic sound

The half worn tires kicked up dust, from the undisturbed groundRemembering its wild past, my heart was heavy, and slowly did pound

Riding with dad, well, let’s just say it wasn’t for the meek

Thank God his Harley can keep a secret, it’s unable to speakIts primary cover has turned gold from an old gas leak

A faded reminder of the man ever so slowly growing weak

For the first time the sunlight sparkled and warmed this iconThe bike, the lifestyle, that somehow we are all drawn

Its owner, the old man, he’s now dead and goneBut for his pride and joy, it’s time for life to move on

HOG HISTORY

TERRY FLOT, HISTORIAN

January 1999, Harley-Davidson and a motorcycle repair shop named “The Hog Farm” had a dispute over the use of the term “hog” and the use of the bar-and-shield logo. Harley-Davidson attempted to trademark the term HOG, but lost the decision when it was ruled that the term was not protectable as a trademark. It was concluded that the word “hog” had become a generic term applied to large motorcycles.

Background to the court caseIn the late 1960s and early 1970s, the word “hog” was used to refer to large motorcycles in particular, by motorcycle enthusiasts. The term was used that way as early as 1965 in the press and frequently thereafter. Several dictionaries contain the definition of “hog” as a motorcycle, especially a large one. The October 1975 issue of Street Chopper included an article entitled “Honda Hog”, indicating the word “hog” was generic to motorcycles.

From the early 1970s and into the early 1980s, motorcycle enthusiasts increasingly used the term “hog” when referring to Harley-Davidson motorcycles. However, for several years, Harley-Davidson attempted to disassociate itself from the term due to the connection to unsavory elements of the population.

In 1981, Harley-Davidson’s new owners saw the financial value of the term “hog” and began using it in connection with merchandise, accessories, advertising and promotions. In 1983, Harley Owners’ Group was formed and pointedly used the acronym “H.O.G.” In 1987, it registered the acronym in conjunction with various logos and subsequently registered the mark “HOG” for motorcycles.

The Hog Farm began using variations of the Harley-Davidson bar-and-shield logo in their advertisements as early as 1979. Their variations included the name “Harley-Davidson” in the horizontal bar. In 1982, The Hog Farm replaced the words “Harley-Davidson” with the words “American-Made” in response to a protest letter from Harley-Davidson. The words “Unauthorized Dealer” were included at the bottom of the logo. That same year Harley-Davidson had the bar-and-shield logo registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In 1986, The Hog Farm added eagle’s wings behind their design. This addition was apparently patterned after Harley-Davidson’s bicentennial logo design, which included an eagle above the shield. The Hog Farm version also featured a drawing of a pig wearing sunglasses.

DecisionUnited States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit ruled “The Hog Farm” was the senior user of the mark “hog”, and the use of the mark did not violate Harley-Davidson’s rights in the mark “HOG” and that Harley-Davidson was the senior user of its registered bar-and-shield trademark. Thus, “H.O.G.” is not a Harley-Davison trademark, but the bar-and-shield is. ◄
