    IVORY

    Why Its Wanted

    Ivory is prized for its:

    beautiful cream color,glossy texturedurability

    For many years, ivory was used to make awide variety of items such as piano keys,

    jewelry, and decorative sculptures. The useof ivory is a strong cultural tradition in manycountries, especially in Asia. Unfortunately,the demand for ivory has increased sharplyin recent years. And with new technologies,it is increasingly easy for hunters to acquirethis prized material. This has lead to thesteep decline of many animal populations,

    including the elephant.

    Ivory is what tusks and teeth are madeof in certain animals.

    Some animals that have ivory tusks includethe elephant, hippopotamus, walrus, wildboar, narwhal and sperm whale.

    Ivory is very strong and can be carved intointricate patterns.

    CORAL REEFSFAST FACTS

    Corals are marine organisms made upof many tiny polyps. These polypssecrete calcium carbonate, which forms ahard skeletal structure on which the polypssit. This structure, combined with thepolyps, form a coral reef.

    Tiny algae live inside the coral, providingit with energy. The different species ofalgae is what causes coral to be so colorful.

    Coral thrives best in sunny, shallow, clearwater, so the algae can get lots of sun.

    There are over 500 species of coral.

    Coral reefs are threatened by:
