3m 30m Wildfires: Protect yourself, your employees and your business The wildfire season can be a worrying time. Taking some simple precautions and planning ahead can help protect your business and keep your employees safe. For more information, contact your independent insurance broker. Ensure sprinklers are inspected regularly. 2 Have a fire extinguisher on each floor. Train employees how to use extinguishers properly. 3 Follow the directions of local authorities. Create—and practise— an evacuation plan so employees are familiar with how to exit the building safely. Do not deviate from the evacuation plan. 4 Have a safety kit ready. Include a carry case for any appropriate supplies. 5 Ensure you have a list of contact numbers for all employees for easy communication/location in case of an evacuation order. 6 Keep flashlights on hand, with fresh batteries, in case the power goes out. 13 Cover all openings with non-combustible coverings. Remove all organic debris from your building’s roof, gutters and grounds. Use fire-resistant roofing, siding, fencing and other building materials. Ensure that siding is at least 12mm thick and extends from ground to roof. Use double-paned tempered glass. Have fire shutters or screens to place over windows and vents. Position all employee and company vehicles for quick evacuation if required. Ensure emergency vehicles have access.
