A word from the editor I am sad to announce that Jodi Stockton has recently resigned from her position as Manager of the Children's Department. Jodi has been a library employee for over 15 years, initially as a part-time employee in the Adult Department. After 5 years, Jodi joined the Children's Department as Manager. For those of us who have worked with Jodi for many years, we have memories of Halloween Spooktaculars, Christmas programs with Santa and Rudolph, American Girl programs and numerous Summer Reading kick-offs. Jodi always made work fun, for her staff as well as the children we serve. She is relocating to Michigan and has accepted a position as a Library Director. Jodi will be missed by all of us at DPL as well as the Danville community. We wish her and her family all the best!
This month we must also say goodbye to staff member, Farah Ah-med. Farah only recently joined our Adult Department staff and we are sorry to see her leave. She will be starting law school next month and we wish Farah success and happiness in this new chap-ter of her life. We are fortunate that Farah will return one Sunday each month to lead a classic literature club.
Joining our Adult staff is Megan Edwards. Born and raised in Danville, Megan is an avid reader and cat lover. Megan had previ-ously been employed at Danville Community schools for 5 years. She is very excited to work at Danville Public Library. Welcome, Megan!

A Book and a Meal
For much of her life, Anne Morrow, the shy
daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico has
stood in the shadows of those around her. When
she travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with
her family, she met Colonel Charles Lindbergh
fresh off his celebrated solo flight across the
Atlantic. Drawing on the rich history of the 20th
century and featuring cameos from such notable
characters as Joseph Kennedy and Amelia
Earhart, The Aviator’s Wife is a vividly imagined
novel of a complicated marriage—-revealing both
its dizzying highs and its devastating lows. With
stunning power and grace, Melanie Benjamin pro-
vides new insight into what made this remarkable
relationship endure.

Genealogy Nuts Meeting Monday, August 12th 1:30 PM
.
Our meeting will cover searching the cen-
sus records for our ancestors using the new
Family search interface. There is more than
one version of the 1940 census available for
research. Have you tried more than one? You
might find your ancestor in a different version
of the census. Ancestry’s version of the cen-
sus is free through 2013. You can search
from home if you do not have a subscription.
We will also cover how to find out if someone
has published a book on your family.

Wanted: Information on Schools in Hendricks County
The Hendricks County Museum and the
Indiana Room will be working on a project to
gather information about the Hendricks County
schools.
We do not want to lose the history of the
schools that our parents, grandparents, and
great-grandparents attended.
We need names of the schools in some town-
ships. Please contact us if you know the names
and locations of the schools or know someone
with that knowledge.
Stories of school events and stories about
what happened to the individual school build-
ings are appreciated.
The consolidations of the schools through
the years caused records to be misplaced, lost,
or discarded. In some cases high school class
pictures were auctioned or sold to alumni. We
would like to digitize these pictures. The mu-
seum would like to have the pictures for their
collection if the owners of the originals would be
willing to donate them. Especially appreciated
are pictures with the students and teachers
named. We are also interested in pictures of the
school buildings.
The picture below is dated 1903 and is the
Sambo School. We are fortunate that someone
has written the names of most of the students on
the back. This is an example of the type of picture
we are hoping to locate.
Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) Conference
August 21–24
Fort Wayne, Indiana
This year’s FGS conference has something
for everyone. Sessions will include a wide array
of offerings from many of the nation's leading
family history experts along with genealogical
and historical organizations.
One of the most exciting areas at FGS confer-
ences is the large exhibit hall, featuring the
latest software, books, maps, databases and
gadgets on the market for genealogists and
family historians, as well as information about
genealogical organizations.
Check out the program offerings on their web-
site at www.fgsconference.org.
The Genealogy Nuts will be traveling to
Ft. Wayne to research at the Allen County
Public Library (ACPL). The overnight trip will
be on September 12th & 13th and registration
is required. If you are interested, please
contact the Indiana Room.
In 2007, ACPL moved into their new building
in downtown Ft. Wayne. The Genealogy Cen-
ter occupies 42,000 square feet on the second
floor. It is the second largest genealogy
library in North America and is considered the
best among public libraries.
For more information, visit the ACPL web-
site at www.acpl.lib.in.us. Look for the link
for genealogy to learn more about their col-
lection.
