MAC KAYLois Green MacKay is fond of quoting artist Paul
Klee: "Drawing is like taking a line for a walk." Theimportance of the line is evident in her work and her
approach to art.She lives and teaches art in Charlotte, North
Carolina, but twenty years of vacations spent inthe Myrtle Beach to Pawley's Island area have
produced many paintings which are now in numerousprivate collections throughout the Southeast. Her
special interest in fishermen, docks, boats and weatheredwood has made the South Carolina lowcountry an
endless source area for this enthusiasm.

SHRIMP BOATS,McCLELLANVILLE
"After an all-day sketchingtrip, we arrived at the
South Carolina Crab Companyin McClellanville to buy
crabmeat. I wanted to getjust one more quick sketch
of the fishing boats all spot-lessly scrubbed and shining in
the late afternoon sun. Inmy haste, I accidentally locked
my friend's keys in her car, andwhile she called for a
locksmith, I was able tosketch these two boats from
the deck of another."

"This colorful collection of signs at theLittle River fishing pier caught my eyebecause they add pattern and a sense of thecontemporary to a landscape composition."

The sketchbooks MacKay carries wherevershe goes have produced many fond memoriesand more ideas for paintings than timeallows. Visits to Europe, Spain and Nassauhave filled many pages. The summer trips tothe South Carolina shore areas fill many more.It is this collection that MacKay has chosento pursue further by revisiting the areaand, in many cases, employing the contourpen line technique.The series presented here illustratesher absorbing interest in the dominanceof the contour pen line, sometimes withvignette watercolor wash, sometimes not.In all of her work, portrait or landscape,the sensitivity of line is the thread thatidentifies a Lois Green MacKay work.

RAINBOW, OUT OF GEORGETOWN
"I walked on the deserted dock one lateafternoon to look at the fishing boats
at anchor after their day's work was done.Sitting alone on the freshly hosed dock,
sketched the Rainbow, clean and spotless,with the still damp nets silhouetted against
the sky, trying to capture that freshlywashed, ready-for-tomorrow look."

SORTING THE CATCH
"Settled on an overturned crate and surroundedby fishermen-watchers, I did this quick contourof fishermen sorting their catch. Contour drawingis done by using a continuous unbroken lineand is drawn with the eyes on the subject andnever (or hardly ever) on the paper. Since so muchof my search and research sketching is doneon trips, I find the speed of the rapidograph penand the contour method of drawing the mostrewarding technique."

ABANDONED PI'ER
"As I spent a quiet fall afternoon paintingaround Little River, I found this abandoned
pier frequented only by the wind andthe sun and two pairs of ducks. It seemed
to lead nowhere but pointed to a pathwhich meandered along to a quite spot
beneath a moss-hung tree."
