WILEY – Where’s my brother

This video has given me plenty of ideas!

Genre

• Brittish hip hop/grime• It is literally the image I see in my head of

a british grime video.

When the first shot you see is a fade in of London dockyards you are straight away aware of the origin of the genre and quality of life the rappers have come from and it is obvious if you know the past behind the area.

The video represents music from our capital city, it represents the genre and how it came about, we see dirty run down locations and a lack of money throughout the video and this is a massive key concept of London grime/hip hop as the big picture of the genre is that the artists came from nothing to being famous, the rags to riches ideology, there is no silver spoon in British hip hop.

A great example of the location of the video, run dwon flats in london.

In the top right corner you can probably recognise Grime artist devlin, him being in this video signifies equality between races with is also a key concept in British hip hop.

Goodwin’s big 7

1.

2.• As in all classic Grime videos there is a

distinctive link between the lyrical words and the narrative in the video.

• There is a classic example of this in the video when Wiley raps about a man running away and the next shot is of a man running to a car and speeding away from a gang of some kind, next slide is a print screen of this…

3. Wiley is constantly rapping into a microphone in the video and this is exactly what I want to do as it is a great way to show passion and feeling into the video as the track I am making one to is about the rappers past and how things used to be. This shows a very clear visual between the music ad the visuals as he is rapping to the music and all the cuts are in perfect sync with the music.

How many visual motifs can you fit into one video?! There is a constant mid/close up of Wiley throughout the video with constant references to other songs he has done such as the wearing my Rolex records in the background. There are also at least 5 different artists fading in and out of the background which are part of the same record label as Wiley from the rap crew “Roll Deep” so the record label has not failed to advertise everything they possibly can in this video!

5

• Almost all the way through Wiley is rapping in the recording studio but in the background there is allways something going on for example the man firing an RPG is a notion of looking.

• There is only one shot of women in the video and it is a photo and certainly not voyeuristic.

6

• The only one I know for certain is the obvious one of Radio 1 extra.

• It would be wrong of me to rule out that there are more intertextual references as I’m sure there are some films with a man being kidnapped and there must be a 21st century war film with a reference to a man shooting a bazooka.

Technical work.

• The camera work is key in this video as the framing is what makes it what it is.

• The editing of this video is extremely well done and uses some classy effects which show the audience this isn’t just some ordinary rapper from the “hood”.

• The super fast cuts and fade in and out editing are really well done and the effects the editor uses to show Wiley rapping and the narrative going on behind him are exactly what I want to do in my video!

• This music video is quite literally all about mise-en-scene:

• The location• The dogs• The Frame work• The lighting• The camera work• The narrative• Etc…

Conclusion.

• This video is what I would consider to be the classic Grime video and does not really challenge may conventions, only that of the lack of women and the fact that you can tell it was professionally edited and this is different because you would not consider the grime genre to have a lot of wealth in it.

Why I like It

• Wiley himself.• The Point/Motive behind it• The song itself (not so great)• The way it is similar to my song.
