From the Editor

2008 in review.

This was a year of action.

Many of you have seen 2008 as a year of striving to maintain past gains.

Being dragged through into the 21st century with Planit software (sometimes

painfully) began to bear fruit. The light at the end of the tunnel in many cases was switched on and in most cases got a whole lot closer.

Your commitment (at times wavering) is being justified.

Highlights of 2008

You don’t work overtime anymore. (Unless as an excuse to get out of the house).

You don’t have any inventory to speak of, burning a hole in your cashflow.

You can’t remember the last on-site stuff-up, everything “fits” all of a sudden.

Your staff looks like they’re actually enjoying themselves and they’re working!

You remembered your wedding anniversary. (Massive brownie points)

You remember all your kids names and in some cases can get pretty close to birth dates. (Even the little runty one you thought was named ‘Heyu’)You struggle for an excuse not to go on a family holiday. (And you’ve always got an excuse.)

You got rid of everyone’s excuses.

Euroblech

Euroblech is the the world’s largest Sheet Metal Working Technology Exhibition.Held every 2 years this exhibtion attracts top industry professionals from all over the world. It predominantly targets all sheet metal working specialists at all management levels in small and medium-sized companies as well as large enterprises: i.e. design and production engineers, quality managers, buyers, manufacturers, technical directors and experts from research and associations.

Radan sales manager Paul Cooper was in Hannover for the show and helped demonstrate the latest new features and benefits to customers.

This month Radan released the latest version of their software – Radan 09 – with applications that are essential to design (2D & 3D), manufacture (Punching, Profiling, Nesting and Bendin) and control production (cost estimation, process management) of sheet metal components and products.

EuroBLECH 2008 presented all aspects of sheet metal manufacturing and working. The trade show attracted 69,400 visitors from some 70 countries.

timber recovery machines. There were also a number with hand tools, dust extraction, edge tapes and sheet panels exhibitors. There were a number of CNC machines also, 4 nesting machine company’s, SELEX, MULTICAM and 2 Chinese machines, Biesse had a point to point set up. There were a reasonable number of beam saws also on display.

Given this particular region being infant for this type of exhibition, it was well organised by the show committee, meet and great personal were always on hand, the information booths were always staffed and the information packs given to the attendees was well set out and had all the information that was required. The premises were comfortably air conditioned and clean.

The Planit stand was well presented and it was probably the best looking stand at the show.

A big congratulations to all those who participated and put in all the hard work to make it all come together so well.

Planit/Biesse NZ Showcase

On the 19th and 20th of November Planit and Biesse New Zealand along with other industry partners including Hafele, Air Tight Solutions, Leitz, One Finance and Insurance and Dolken Edging conducted a 2 day showcase at the Biesse showrooms on the outskirts of Auckland.

Representing Planit were Terry Hay, John Whinnen and Graham Rutter, who combined demonstrated Nested Based Manufacturing via a live connection between Cabinet Vision and a Biesse Flat Bed router with many new customers being impressed by the seamlessness and speed of the demonstration. Existing customers expressed interest in Manager, meaning Graham was very busy answering questions and giving presentations.

Invited Motivational speaker Graham Lowe gave an inspiring talk on what he has learnt during the high’s of his professional career coaching,

• New Zealand National Rugby League team • Queensland State of Origin team, the only international coach to achieve a series win • Manly Rugby League team in Sydney • Wigan Club in England

Followed by the low’s with his personnel health having had multiple heart bypasses, strokes and a brain haemorrhage.

Graham used some of the key phrases below to stir the enthusiasm of all of those attending,

• Never die wondering • Kick for the seagulls (look for opportunities where your opposition haven’t) • Run for the fresh air (stop doing the same predictable things over and over again, strive for change) • No such word as can’t • Look for the guy wearing the dinner suit (feed off the people who things appear to come naturally for)

Many existing and Planit customers attended along with many more looking for something new to invigorate their business. A large number only able to stay for a short while due to over whelming workloads.

Over all a very successful showcase underlining the market in New Zealand is both an exciting and vibrant one!

Finally Mr Tony Rogers from Tekcel presented and discussed the latest additions to the Tekcel range of Nested Based Machinery, that being automatic loading and offloading and labelling.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Dale Healy and the boys at H & H cabinets for making their premises available at what is this very busy time of the year. We also thank Dale for his own unexpected presentation, and willingness to share the experiences he has encountered in the change to Nested Based Manufacturing with all those who attended.

H&H SHOWCASE

On Tuesday 28th October in conjunction with Tekcel, Planit held a Nested Based Manufacturing seminar at H & H Cabinets in Burwood. The evening was well attended with all those who came along able to enjoy a bite to eat in the relaxed, informative atmosphere.

Mr Dean Milligan from Planit demonstrated Solid Manufacturing version 4.2 and discussed the benefits of software as part of a Nested Based Manufacturing Solution. Mr Graham Rutter from Planit then presented Manager our latest software program. Manager has the ability to link with Cabinet-Vision and is the next logical step in the organisation of your business; that being pricing, purchasing, inventory and planning.

Planit’s Cabinet Vision has enabled MSA Prestige Woodcraft to take on more work and to get apprentices more involved with jobs, contributing to the companies productivity.

“My first year apprentices are using the software successfully. Without it, I couldn’t have got the apprentices to do what they’re doing now. They wouldn’t have been able to comprehend the work.”

The company has also cut right back on the amount of overtime worked. “The boys were each doing up to 15 hours overtime a week, but now we’re achieving the same amount of work in normal hours. That’s a significant increase in productivity, so I’m happy.”

MSA Prestige Woodcraft has become more competitive since introducing the software. “I haven’t had to raise our prices and we’re getting the work out faster and more efficiently.”

“I would recommend the software as one of the best things I’ve spent money on, without a doubt. Even after the short time we’ve been using Cabinet Vision, I couldn’t do without it,” Mr Appino said.

Engineered wholly and solely for the woodworking industry, Planit software is a screen-to-machine software. For those workshops automating their businesses with CNC equipment, Planit software is fully integrated with the Planit CNC centre, therefore providing a complete screen-to-machine solution that confirms all parts and part operations before sending data to the factory.

Planit software is easy to set-up for the building of cabinets using favourite joinery techniques. Based on a simple wizard, it allows the creation of unlimited set-ups, mixes various settings per job and changes from one style to another instantly and allows saving of the construction methods for use over and over again.

An operator can customise cabinet sizes, shape, or any construction to suit the customer’s needs. Colours and textures can be selected for the whole room or for individual cabinets and parts. Lighting and reflections can be controlled to bring these designs to life well before any manufacturing has begun.

• Unlimited detailing includes the following: • users can configure openings and interior parts.• placement of shelves, dividers, trays, and subassemblies.• control of door reveals, styles, guides and other options per opening.• materials can be changed per job, per room, per cabinet, or per part for complete control.• cabinet shapes can be edited in plan view, elevation view or side view.• prints are made for colour or detailed line drawings.• instant change is facilitated between various construction settings. • parts in part operations change instantly.

Cabinet software first-timer enjoys big gains in precision and output

Cabinet making and joinery company MSA Prestige Woodcraft has experienced big increases in productivity and accuracy in the few months since adopting cabinet making software.

“Previously we used practically no cabinet making software” recalled Matthew Appino, managing director of this fast-growing business in Girraween in Sydney’s west. “I had software off the internet for board optimisation, but the rest was done manually.”

The newcomer to cabinet making software adopted Cabinet Vision from Planit, hugely boosting the company’s efficiency.

“It’s reduced the amount of work my cabinet makers have to do by about 30 per cent, while the whole office is enjoying a 40 per cent improvement. It has also given us more time to focus on our clients and on continually improving our customer service.”

Mr Appino said that everything was clearer and more precise, since all the information needed was on the job sheets and the cut parts were labelled.

“We do very large jobs and used to lose drawings for all sorts of parts. This has stopped happening, however if we do need to reprint anything it’s easy to retrieve. Also, if a part does goes missing, we can easily track it down.”

PLANIT ANNOUNCEMENTS

BIRTHSLukas Clarke On the 13th September 2008 saw an early arrival of my baby Lukas Ross Clarke. While most of my customers wouldnt of known I was expecting my first child, those that saw me in my last trimester couldnt of missed the belly!! My due date was 12th October, but like most males..stubborn and having a mind of their own Lukas decided to come a month early. Born 6 1/2 pound and 48cm long both Steve and myself thought everything was just perfect....WRONG. It seems males are slower than females to develop and the last organ for a male to fully form is the lungs. This being the case and Lukas deciding to come a month early saw him being transferred to intesive care for 2 weeks to be treated for premmy lungs.

What began as a very scary time, quickly changed into the happiest time of my life as I began to bond with my beautiful child. Listening to Lukas cry now I question there was ever a problem with his lungs!!! Now almost 10 pounds I realise Lukas coming early was a blessing in disquise. Thank you to all my customers kind thoughts and best wishes. Cant wait to show him off to you all.

The cost of your computer hardware is small compared to the cost of the software you will be running on it or the aggravation of waiting for the computer to catch up with you.

Don’t try and save money on your hardware – you will regret it later.

Purchase the newest, fastest computer you can afford.

Try to avoid buying packaged computers from discount retailers that come with a lot of features to help you surf the internet, play computer games or other recreational computer activities.

If you are unfamiliar with computer configuration, ask for an industry standard commercial quality computer to use in your business. Tell your computer supplier you are going to be using the computer for CAD based applications so that he can make appropriate recommendations.

Planit products are 32-bit Microsoft Windows applications and were written for the Intel Pentium family of processors. Use of other than genuine Intel Pentium processors may result in the haphazard performance of Planit products and in some cases it may not work at all. Cabinet Vision Tips & Tricks

Disconnecting Walls

This feature allows the user to disconnect the relationship between adjoining walls. Below is a demonstration of a common use for this feature. The room layout drawn below displays a peninsula wall (wall number 3) connected to the end of wall number 2. Let’s say I want to extend wall number 2 by the amount of 500mm to the right.

Cabinet Vision Tips & Tricks

Change the Elevation of Counter Tops

How do you change the Elevation of a Counter Top?Assuming there is a Counter Top in the Room now:

1. Go to the Floor Plan view. 2. Click on the Tops button in the sidebar. 3. Right Click on the Counter Top you want to modify, from the drop down menu – choose Properties. 4. At the Counter Top Properties screen you will be able to change the Elevation.

View Properties

This feature allows the user to set to default the level of detail that is displayed in the layout, Assembly and part view. To do this from either the Room Plan or Elevation views go to the System Menu and select ‘Views’. A screen as shown below should open;

Make the changes to the detail settings as required and click on the ‘Set as System Defaults’ button before clicking OK.This will now save the detail settings.

The first step is to select the peninsula wall, right click when selected and go to connections, then select the option disconnect left.

After disconnecting the peninsula wall you will now be able to stretch wall number 2 to the right without affecting the peninsula wall posion.

Another benefit from using this method can be found when placing an island back panel on the peninsula wall. When you place the island panel on the peninsula wall you can stretch the panel to the overall size of the wall. If you tried this while the peninsula wall was connected the island panel would be too big by the thickness of wall number 2

First, select the scene on the Drawings Page and then click the CAD button

Then, hold your mouse close to the wall that you wish to dimension and hold Shift while you click near the Wall.

Pull the dimension away from the Wall until you have it where you want it to be displayed and then click to drop the new dimension line at that point.

Next, turn off the Object Snap option.

Then, select the Dimension Tool from the CAD Tools Menu.

Next, set the Dimension to Aligned Tailed.

Wall Dimensions

When using CAD to dimension Walls inside scenes at the Drawings Page, there is a trick to get automatic dimensions for a Wall Length or thickness.

Deleting Counter Tops

Over the last few months we have had quite a few calls in regards to deleting Counter tops in Kitchen Builder, here it is to refresh your memories.

Step One: Go into the tops section

Kitchen Builder Tips & Tricks

The Aliases Tab

This is an extremely powerful feature. Let’s say you build Cabinets on an incremental basis. We start with a STYLE, let’s say a Single Door Base Cabinet at 200 wide. We also build this same STYLE Cabinet in 250, 300, 350, 400, and 450. Simply create the STYLE Cabinet and save it using this tab and it will create individual Cabinets in this STYLE, in differing dimensions, that you specify. See the example of the library below after completion of the above Save As on the 1D-200 Cabinet and the addition of Aliases.

Step Two: Right click on the Top you wish to delete (Do not go into Auto Build or New Top Mode)

Step Three: Select Delete.
