The marriage record of William and Janet shows that both were living in Dunfermline in 1785. William wasemployed as a coal miner at the Berrylaw Colliery which, according to an 1856 map, was located about twomiles west of Dunfermline. The birth records of their children show that the family lived variously inDunfermline, Torryburn and Dalgety. They may have eventually settled in Dalgety parish since their last threechildren were born there. The parish consisted of six villages, including Fordell which had a large colliery whereWilliam may have worked.

Adelaide Frick Ramsay Clarke recalled in a letter that she had been taken to Scotland on a visit when she wasonly six months old in 1892. She was later told by her mother that William and Janet had lived in FordellColliery.

It reads that on April 22, 1816, "Robert RamsayCoalhewer in the parish of Dalgety and Betty Morris of this parish gave in their names for proclamation in orderto marriage and being three times proclaimed and no objections made they were married on 10 May 1816."Robert's brother William was married the same day.

Occupation: "In 1813 Robert, while mining in the Earl of Elgin's coal pit, was so severely injured that he couldnever thereafter perform hard labor. Fortunately, he had been a regular and a studious fellow and while he wasonly twenty-one at the time of the accident, he was already ranked as a mine boss. Manual labor, therefore, was

not necessary for him and owing to his good standing in the community, he was able to get sufficient financialbacking to set himself up in the mining business on leased property." (Childers, p. 15)

His descendant Margaret Ramsay Jones, of Mt. Pleasant, PA, wrote that Robert "owned the coal mine called'White Rashes' at Cowdenbeath, Fifeshire, Scotland."

Family: Robert died just two years after the birth of his youngest child. He never lived to see any of hisgrandchildren. Still, "he accumulated sufficient of the world's goods during his brief life that his family neverlacked the necessities and his children received at least a limited education." (Childers, p. 15)

Robert's descendant, Adelaide Frick Ramsay Clarke, maintains that Robert and Elizabeth were buried atDunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Scotland, on the left side of the Margate entrance. However, when I husbandand I visited the Abbey in 1997, we could not find the graves even though we walked through the entire cemeteryand bought the book that lists the graves. On the other hand, some of the stones are unreadable and damaged.

Notes for ELIZABETH MORRIS:Of the eight known children of Robert and Elizabeth, seven survived to adulthood, marriage and parenthood.Although Robert died at an early age, Elizabeth lived long enough to know of the birth of most of hergrandchildren. Of Elizabeth's children, only William left Scotland to emigrate to America. The rest likely neverleft the county of Fife, judging by the places their children were born. All her daughters married miners and theyworked in the collieries in the parishes of Auchterderran and Dalgety, as did her son Morris. William carried themining tradition to the United States. Robert and Elizabeth had at least 46 grandchildren.

Elizabeth's descendant, Adelaide Frick Ramsay Clarke, maintains that Robert and Elizabeth also had a sonThomas, nicknamed Tam "who lived in Tam Hill Scotland. Some of the family are still there," Adelaide wrote ina family record. However, I can find no record of a Thomas Ramsay born to the couple. Thomas Ramsay is alsonot in the notes of Helen Ramsay Walter.

Margaret Ramsay Jones states that Elizabeth died in 1865. I will have to check this with the Scottish Register,but in general, I have found a number of dates provided by Mrs. Jones to be in error.

Notes for WILLIAM RAMSAY:Margaret Ramsay Jones gives conflicting information on William's birth date, birth place and marriage date andplace. She states he was born March 25, 1819 in Clackmannan. I have his christening record only, and that tookplace in Dunfermline. She also gives a marriage date of January 1840 in Fordell, Fifeshire, but their marriagecertificate gives the date and place listed here: Nov 16, 1839 in Dalgety. Mrs. Jones confirms that they had tenchildren, five boys and five girls, four of the children dying in infancy.

William was the pioneer in his family. He "talked with his brothers about the possibility of going to the colonies;he even mentioned America, this land about which such exciting stories were being told. But his brothers didn'tincline much to William's idea." (Childers, p. 23.) William, Elisabeth and their five children first came toAmerica in 1852, landing in New York after a six-weeks sailing and then settling in Port Perry, Allegheny Co,PA. The deaths of three of their children there are believed to have motivated them in part to return to Scotlandin 1855.

The lure of increased miner's wages during a Pennsylvania coal boom drew William and his family back toAmerica in 1863. William first worked at Hay's coal mine near Six Mile Ferry, Allegheny Co, PA. At that time,William and his sons Robert, William and Morris were all working together at the same mine. William thenaccepted a better position and moved to Larimer, North Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA. The 1870 USCensus finds the family living in Larimer when William was 50. He died there.

Margaret Ramsay Jones' account follows: "[In Scotland] Grandfather William Ramsay was a contractor and sankcoal mines in Fifeshire. He sank the 'William Pit,' the 'Humbug,' the 'Cardenden,' the 'Hyndlop,' the 'George's'

and others."

"Grandfather William Ramsay and his entire family sailed from Glasgow, Scotland, April 23, 1852. on their firsttrip to America, and landed in New York in June. They went by rail from New York to Port Perry on theMonongahela River near Pittsburgh, PA, where they remained for two years. They then moved to New Brighton,PA where they lived for six months before moving to the mines near Beck's Run, not far from Homestead, PAwhere they stayed until 1855, when they all returned to their native town of Dunfermline, Scotland."

"In 1863 the entire family returned to America, this time sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia [see the manifestelsewhere on this site. It lists the family as passengers of the Packet Ship "Tuscarara," Master Richard M.Dunlevy]. Before returning to America, our father, Robert Ramsay, married Janet Erskine, who joined the partyof emigrants."

"The entire family returned to Beck's Run, a small mining town in the Pittsburgh District, but in August 1864,they, all except our parents, moved to Larimer, PA., a coal mining town on the main line of the PennsylvaniaRailroad, 18 miles east of Pittsburgh."

The family's second immigration conflict with the data provided by William's son, George S. Ramsay, on the1900 US census. It states that George, who was born in Scotland, had been living in the US for 44 years, havingarrived here in 1858. Since he would have been only a year old at the time, his parents would have to have comewith him. However, George's younger siblings, Christina and Maria were also born in Scotland. Perhaps theperson who gave the census information made a mistake.

Her children: "The Ramsays who came in 1852 had to live in a bare frame structure [in Port Perry]. It couldnever be made into such a home as Elisabeth Ramsay had always known, and wanted again. Of sanitation, therewas none. Sickness led to epidemic...taking its toll especially of the children. As the years passed, ElisabethRamsay bore three children in America, her adopted land of high hopes and dashed ambitions. Each of thechildren died after a few months of life and sickness. Medical science at Port Perry was on a par with the town'ssanitation and the babies were the sacrifice on the altar of ignorance." (Childers, pp. 27-28) "William andElisabeth made their third sorrowful trip to the little graveyard in Port Perry. Beside the two babies alreadyburied there, they laid a third, a little girl." (Childers, p. 30)

There's some confusion about the three births Ramsay's biographer describes. They were probably Peter, Mayand May. Peter was born in Scotland, not America, and would have been about a year old when the family cameto America. As yet, no official records have been found to document the births of May and May. Their namesexist only in the notes of Mrs. Walter. Margaret Ramsay Jones notes that William and Elisabeth had fivedaughters and five sons.

Following the return of the family to America, daughter Christina would die at the age of eight and daughterMaria would die at the age of twenty-five following childbirth. Perhaps Elisabeth found some solace in thesuccesses of her sons in the mining industry.

There is no Scottish record of a Margaret being born to Robert and Elizabeth. However, aScottish marriage record and a reliable family record states this child's name is Margaret. I believe Janet andMargaret are the same person.

My conclusion is that the name on the original parish record is in error: that is, Janet should be Margaret; or,there was a first and middle name for this child and only one was recorded at birth. I would find this explanationsuspect had I not seen this same situation occur twice in our family's German Church records which arecomparable to the Scottish parish records. During this period of time, there were no birth certificates: churchrecords were the only source of all births recorded.

I have combined the names here so that anyone looking for a birth or marriage record for this child will have abetter chance at finding a birth record for Janet as the child and Margaret as the wife (the name by which herchildren and other descendants knew her, which is why I have put that name first). In addition, in the footnote onthe source of this child's birth I have stated that the birth record indicates the child's name as Janet. Lastly, in thelineage note for Margaret Janet, I have stated that she is "also known as" Janet Ramsay.

Notes for MORRIS RAMSAY:Birthplace: Fordell, a village located in the parish of Dalgety, Fife, had "an extensive colliery...employing nearlyhalf the population,'' according to Westwood's Directory for the Counties of Fife & Kinross, published in 1862,when Morris was 14 years old. My husband and I visited Fordell in 2000. The local pub owner greeted us andhis patrons told stories about the mines in Fordell that have now been exhausted. The only evidence of the once-thriving colliery was the former superintendent's cottage. The miners' pitiful housing had long since been torndown. The graveyard adjacent to the church at Mossgreen was in poor condition since most of the stones wereeither too weathered to read or had sunk into the ground. Giant black bulls grazing behind a stone wall seemedto be the only guardians of the cemetery. There was, however, a spectacular view of the downward slope, ofabout five miles, to the shores of the Forth and the magnificent bridge that spans the waters there.

Mentor: Morris was a mentor to his nephew, Erskine Ramsay, who became a millionaire. Erskine's biographymakes numerous references to the part Morris played in his nephew's life, including his serving as a math tutor tothe boy who would eventually donate over five million dollars to educational and other causes.

Occupation: "Morris Ramsay, after completing a common school education, began learning the trade ofmachinist at Dunfermline, his birthplace, and completed the same at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in which city hisparents located upon their arrival in this country in 1852. From 1864 to 1869 he worked in the mines of theWestmoreland Coal Company, and in the latter year was appointed mining boss at the Shafton coal mines, inwhich capacity he served for ten years. He then removed to Houtzdale, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, and wassuperintendent of the Kittanning Coal Company's mines for two years. In 1882 he became superintendent ofmines at Morewood; he was transferred two years later to the position of mining engineer for the Frick CokeCompany, his services in this capacity being of great value to his employers. In 1886 he was madesuperintendent by the above company of their coke plants at Morewood, Warden, Dillinger, Alice and Tarr's.

The ovens at these works numbered 1151, of the eight thousand owned or operated by the Southwest Coal andCoke Company....Among the works of Mr. Ramsay's engineering in the Connellsville coke region are: The Risttipple, the air shaft at Morewood, the Trotter plant and the new Henry Clay coke works near Broad Ford, Fayettecounty, Pennsylvania." (Jordan, pp. 334-335) Morris and his brother Robert also held management positionsduring the Morewood Mine Riot in 1891.

His death: In Henry Clay Frick: An Intimate Portrait, by Martha Frick Symington Sanger, the author notes aboutgreat-grandfather's death: "The H.C. Frick Coke Company's Morewood Superintendent, Morris Ramsay, who hadnamed his infant daughter after Frick's wife, Adelaide, was fatally injured in a carriage accident....AlthoughRamsay was sent by Frick to a Pittsburgh hospital, he died in surgery. Frick served as a pallbearer at Ramsay'sfuneral and offered financial aid to his devastated widow." (p. 231) For some years, this version of MorrisRamsay's death was an accepted family fact and as shown above, found its way into print.

However, in 2002, I obtained a copy of Morris' death certificate from the Allegheny County coroner's office. Iwas stunned to learn that the cause of his death was listed as cancer of the pancreas. In September 2002, Ireturned to Greensburg and searched through the microfilm of the then-weekly Tribune-Herald. I did not find anobituary but did find two other mentions. "Morris Ramsey [sic], Superintendent of the Morewood Works, wastaken to Dr. Sutton's private hospital, Pittsburg, to have an operation performed in hopes of benefiting his health,which has been on the decline for some months. The operation will be performed Thursday." This item wasreported on Jan. 4, 1893. The following week, the paper reported that Morris had died while undergoing anoperation. Then in January 2003, Marjorie Ramsay Laing sent me two obituaries from the Mt. Pleasant Journalthat clearly state that Morris died of cancer. How the carriage accident story got started I do not know but it wasclearly a myth.

Morris Ramsay died at 11 P.M. on Dec. 29, 1892 at Dr. R.S. Sutton's private hospital at the age of 44 years, 6months, 25 days. He had filed his will only a month previously. Notes for SADIE MARIAH HELMAN GREER:Parentage: Sadie's natural parents were Maria Long and Jacob Helman. Sadie's mother died two days aftergiving birth to her. Apparently, her father felt that he could not care for her properly. The Greers, next doorneighbors of Jacob in the 1850 census, agreed to raise Sadie as their own since they were childless. The 1860census shows Sadie, aged seven, living with the Greers in Larimer, N. Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co., asSadie Helman. Her natural father had moved elsewhere by that time. Years passed, and during that time Sadiewas provided with every advantage including her own piano, recalls Marjorie Ramsay Laing.

George Greer was born in 1817 in Westmoreland Co, PA, and died after 1880. His first wife, Sadie's adoptivemother, was Sarah Ewing, born in 1827 in PA, and died on Nov. 18, 1869. In the census for 1870, the year Sadiewas married, George Greer, recently a widower, listed his occupation as "gentleman" and declared his propertywas worth $10,000. (George would marry twice more, to Harriet Baughman and then after her death, to HannahUnknown. Hannah died after 1900 in Greensburg, PA.)

On the occasion of Sadie's marriage to Morris, George Greer legally adopted Sadie, then just over the age of 17,so that she could be his heir. After being told that the man she had known as a family friend was indeed hernatural father, Sadie became reacquainted with the Helmans. Jacob had since remarried and fathered severalother children. The Helmans, Longs and the Greers had all lived in the Larimer area and each family acceptedSadie equally, it was said. (Sadie's death certificate lists her father as George A. Greer.)

Marriage: As her husband pursued his ascending career in mining, Sadie was left to care for the children. Of her

thirteen children, only nine were alive at the time of the 1900 US census. Two babies were stillborn. Two moreyoung daughters died in a diphtheria epidemic. In fact, within a two-year period, Sadie had lost three children,her first grandchild and her husband. Prior to those deaths, the family had at least enjoyed a sense of luxury inthe Victorian "Big House" in Mount Pleasant that still exists today. The current owner, a non-family member, issaid to have restored the house consistent with the period in which the Ramsays lived there.

Sadie and Morris had 40 grandchildren, only two of which were born during Morris' short lifetime. Their firstgrandchild, Morris Byers Ramsay, died just a few days before the death of Morris.

The census data at the turn of the century shows that Sadie was living with daughters Alice and Adelaide at 242Walnut Street, Mount Pleasant. Sadie had owned her home, free of mortgage, for seven years. "Mrs. Sadie M.Ramsay, widow of Morris Ramsay, resides in a comfortable home in Mount Pleasant, is highly esteemed in thecommunity, and enjoys the acquaintance of a wide circle of friends." (Jordan, p. 335) Sadie continued to livewith Adelaide until her death that occurred at 3:30 P.M. on July 12, 1927. She had outlived her husband by 35years. She died at the age of 74 years, 6 months, 13 days.

Her obituary read: "Mrs. Sadie Greer Ramsay, widow of the late Morris Ramsay, died late Tuesday afternoon ather home, 729 Walnut Street. She had only been sick since the previous Saturday. Deceased was 74 years of ageon last New Year’s Day. She is survived by one brother, William Helman, of South Greensburg and by thefollowing children: William Ramsay, Bethlehem; Mrs. Sadie Eaton, Brownsville; Mrs. John L. Shields, WalnutCorner; George Ramsay, Bradenville; Mrs. Christena Stahl, Brownsville; Robert Ramsay, Greensburg; MissAlice I. Ramsay, 729 Walnut Street; and Mrs. John P. Clarke, Jr., Dormont. Her descendants numbered 40grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o’clock Friday afternoonfollowed by internment in the family lot in the Union cemetery located at Irwin."

Notes for ROBERT ALEXANDER RAMSAY:I knew him as Papap, the most influential person in my life. He and Nana raised me as their own child. Papaphad the most wonderful sense of humor, sometimes to the point of being devilish. He once handed me abiography of Mary Queen of Scots and told me to read it and learn from it. Mary and I shared a headstrongtemper, he said, and he didn't want me to meet a similar fate. Robert loved the bagpipes, had a jacket made fromthe Ramsay plaid, and was intrigued by Scot lore.

Robert was a talented draftsman, surveyor and civil engineer who became the City Engineer for Greensburg,Westmoreland Co, PA. He embodied the "Labora" part of the Ramsay motto, working well into his old age.Even in his seventies, Robert often walked from his beloved home at 443 West Pittsburgh Street where he hadlived all his married life, down one long hill and up another, to the City Hall which he could never quite let go ofafter his retirement. Robert's father Morris must have been a man of great intuition because Morris willed theneight year old Robert "my library and all my surveying instruments and my gold watch and my book cases andwriting desk," all of which he used his entire life.

The 1920 US census shows that Robert's family had retained the services of a live-in Bohemian servant girl. Irecall the house had bay windows, five bedrooms, a separate dining room and parlor and a cavernous attic filledwith memorabilia. Off the back porch was a room once used to bake bread. The garage had a quaint door thatslid on rollers to admit the entrance of a Packard or Dodge. The backyard was filled with pine, buckeye and plumtrees and there was a black granite marker that proclaimed "Ramsay."

After the death of his wife, Robert's son Morris sold his home to a pharmacist who promptly tore down theVictorian treasure and erected an unsightly pharmacy. I watched the day the wrecking ball demolished the home,the timbers of which had been so strong that an attic fire merely singed them. Morris had put his father into anursing home in Ligonier where Robert's constant request was to go home. His health deteriorated and he died at4:45 P.M. on Jun 29, 1970 at Maginnis Hospital in Ligonier. The final entry in the Ramsay family bibleregarding Robert was that he was buried at 1:30 P.M. at the age of 85 years, 9 months, 13 days.

Notes for NINA MARIAH ALLSHOUSE:In Nina Allshouse is the convergence of two German families, the Allshouses and the Kunkles, who emigratedfrom Germany and landed within one day of each other in Philadelphia, PA nearly 140 years before Nina's birth.Nina's third great-grandfather Henry Allshouse, who sailed on the Judith, arrived in PA on Sep 15, 1748. A daylater, Nina's third great-grandfather Johannes Kunkle, who sailed on the Patience, arrived at the same port on Sep16, 1748.

"Nana" had the blue eyes and facial features of her German ancestors. She told me that during an illness as agirl, she lost her hair and when it grew back, she resolved not to cut it. Until she died, she kept her hair long andwould dutifully roll it up each day as would befit a matronly woman. She was a genteel woman but scornedmodern inventions. In the early sixties, she still used a wringer washer, hung her sheets out to dry--even in thewinter--and insisted on washing the second story windows. Why she had household help I don't know becauseshe insisted on doing everything herself.

Nina told stories of the great flu epidemic of 1917-18 when family members would knock on the walls by theirbeds to signal to one another that they were still alive. She also had marvelous sayings for every occasion suchas: "If you don't listen, you'll have to feel; You made your bed, now lie in it; Murder will out." Every Sundayafter church there was a large meal in the dining room followed by a visit to some relative or a drive in thecountry. Nina had taken china-painting classes at nearby Seton Hill College and her china cupboard was filledwith delicate teacups and other intricate pieces.

Nina and Robert were married when Nina was 22 years old. They visited Washington, D.C. on their honeymoon.

The couple would later have five children and 14 grandchildren, one of which was myself. Nana and Papapraised me from infancy.

Nana, who had been born at 12 A.M. in 1888, died at 12:01 A.M. in 1967 in Westmoreland County Hospital,less than half a block from the home in which she had lived her entire life. After an 11 A.M. service at theKepple Funeral Home, she was buried at the historic Brush Creek Cemetery where her grandfather, SamuelAllshouse, had been one of the originators of the Brush Creek Church and an early director of the cemetery. Shewas 79 years, 5 months, 4 days old.

Robert, like his brothersDonald and Morris, and his father, Robert, became a civil engineer. However, Robert had planned a career in themilitary from which, after nine years, he was persuaded to leave by my mother. It was a choice he alwaysregretted, he told me, and it is no wonder since his military position afforded him power and the chance to travel.Afterwards, his worldwide travels were limited to ham radio transmissions, for which he had a passion.

Military Service: Because of the fire which destroyed countless records of military personnel, I have been unableto find much documentation of where he served other than the following: entered service Jan 13, 1941, ArmySerial Number 0-405-951, Signal Corps; graduated Command & General Staff, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, 1943 [withhigh honors]; returned from latest tour of overseas service August 7, 1945 after spending 18 months there; in anapplication for extended active duty on January 16, 1948, his rank was Lieutenant Colonel while immediatelyprior to processing for relief from active duty, he was a Major; in 1948, the exact designation of unit or office towhich he was last assigned for active duty was Headquarters Second Army.

According to my mother, Daddy joined the Army in 1939. At some point, he was assigned to Ft. Monmouth, NJ.At that post, when Daddy was a captain, Mother saw Betty Grable and Betty Davis, who were entertaining thetroops. There she also met generals Patton, McArthur and Marshall. When Daddy was sent overseas, it was toChina. He was there for two years and was involved in the Salween Campaign, according to mother. A USArmy web site states the initial Salween Campaign lasted from 11 May to 30 June 1944. My aunt Marjorie says

that Daddy contracted malaria during his service.

In China, Daddy made a lifelong friend of a Chinese Major General, Chien Tai. Among Robert's medals was theSpecial Breast Order of Yun-Hui with an accompanying citation signed by Chiang Kai-shek, then Chiang Chung-Cheng, President of the National Government of the Republic of China, on Dec. 23, 1946. The medal wasawarded for his outstanding achievement while serving in China. Pictures of the medal and my father sittingastride a camel in front of the Sphinx in Egypt are also on my website.

My parents had 15 grandchildren.

His death: My sister Gretchen and I cared for my father while he was dying of cancer. Robert died at 8:36 P.M.on Veteran's Day, which he would have felt was appropriate. He died at the VA Hospital on University Drive,Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA. Funeral services were held at 11 A.M. on Nov. 15, 1967 at the Robert J. KeppleFuneral Home. A military funeral was held at St. Clair Cemetery with an honor guard. He was 55 years, 10months old, and was buried in the war veteran's section of the cemetery.

"Gretchen Ramsay, 62, of Jeannette, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital,Greensburg. She was born Nov. 15, 1938, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Robert Ramsay and MarionGraham Degitz. Gretchen was the associate director of Dr. Bob Medical Weight Loss Center in Greensburg anda member of the Who's Who of Nursing. She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Howe and husband, Barry, ofJeannette, and Holly Hemminger and husband, Ronald, of Greensburg; a son, William J. Good of Ligonier; threesisters, June Ramsay of California, Barbara Silvestri (sic) and husband, Mark, of Massachusetts, and DeborahMendenhall and husband, Russell, of Oregon; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces andnephews. Friends were received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St.,Jeannette, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 12:30 P.M. in thefuneral home chapel with the Rev. H. Donald Lash officiating. Interment will follow in the Brush CreekCemetery, Hempfield Township."

Gretchen died at 6 A.M. on a Friday at the Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co,PA, the same hospital in which she was a nursing student years previously. A picture of Gretchen and otherstudent nurses is one of the photos that hung on the hospital corridor walls at the time she died. Gretchen wasburied, next to my mother in Brush Creek, on the day of Christmas Eve 2000. Gretchen was 62 years, 1 month, 7days old.
