THANKS.
The easiest thing would be to thank all the many people that have been contacted during the researching of this history. There has been nothing but cooperation from everyone, for which I am really thankful. However there are a few people who must be given special thanks for their help, patience and forbearance.
The first of these must be my wife Katheleen who racked her brains remembering all she could about her family, while digging out all her old photographs and letters. She also listened patiently to my endless theories, hopes, successes and failures, besides searching records in Alberta, Ontario and Ireland Archives and tramping through numerous cemetaries in these same areas. Without her the task would have been considerably harder.
The same can be said, in varying degrees, to her family from whom I continually requested information and pictures.
Mabel M "Wright" Duncan who wrote "The Duncans of Bethel" must be commended for the work she put into the book, while her niece Margaret Elizabeth Duncan, of Edmonton is thanked for introducing me to it.
While on the subject of books Patricia Harts "Pioneering in North York", is a must to anyone who is researching that area.
The personel in the North York Library, and in the archives of Peel township and Woodbridge gave valuable assistance.
Eristine "Werezuk" Duncan of Vermillion, and Flora "Houser" Duncan of Red Deer, both in Alberta, as well as Cecil Duncan of Chelmsford, Ontario all contributed with information and encouragement.
To the many others that I have not mentioned, THANKS.
THE DUNCANS
This story starts in Carrigeencor Bridge in County Leitrem. Ireland, with William Duncan who was a merchant and mill owner (oatmeal) living beside the River Bonet, where he had his mill. For the sake of convenience this William will be referred to as William I. The father of William was an Army Surgeon. Among the children of William and his wife was another William who will be referred to as William II. William II married Jane Elliot of County Fermanagh. They had six sons and two daughters that have been traced. These children were named William III, John, James, Jane, Adam, George and Mary and Henry. The eldest son, William III came to Canada selling linen from his, or his family's flax mills. He was apparently impressed by what he saw as he came over a second time and bought land in York County and settled down there. His father and his brothers and sisters, with the exception of Henry, also came over to Canada in 1929. The father, William II, died on the ship on the passage over and was buried at sea in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There is no mention of the mother. William III bought land in York County for his four brothers, and they all settled down in this area, The two sisters both got married. They married brothers William and John Jackson. The five brothers all farmed, and four of them married and had quite a few children. The exception was Adam who apparently never married and died around the age of 44. William III built a large house which he named Dublin. The brothers were very successful in their farming, and other ventures. Their children spread out across Ontario while their grandchildren spread still further to Western Canada and the United States. The early Duncans were very active in their communities and churchs, as well in the promoting of educational facilities and business opportunities in their areas. This then is the story of the Duncan family in Canada with their achievements and influence in the development of the last one hundred and seventy years of Canada's history.
For the sake of convenience the families of four of the five sons who emmigrated to Canada will be covered in separate sections. This separation is necessary due to the large number of children these four brothers had, along with the fact that they all seem to name them with the same chistian names, and all of them lived, originally, in the same small area of North York Township in the County of York. Ontario.
REBELLION IN UPPER CANADA (ONTARIO) IN 1837
During the "rebellion" in 1837, a Thomas Matthews, who was one of the rebellion leaders, was arrested in the house of bachelors John and William Duncan. The house was situated on Lot 25, Concession 3, EAST of Yonge Street in L'AMAROUX.
These two bachelors, John and William are not the John and William of the family we are tracing. The William of this family was by then 36 years old and was married with children. He was also living on his property at Lot 16, Concession 3, WEST of Yonge. His brother John was also married, with children, and living on his property at Lot 23, Cocession 6. WEST of Yonge.
Records show that there were other Duncan families living in York County around this time. Unfortunately all these Duncan families seem to like the christian names of William, John, George and James.
The above rebellion took place in Upper Canada (Ontario), which brings up the fact that this area has changed a lot over the years, in area and name.
Until the American Revolution, (War of Independence), of 1775 - 1783, the parts of North America controlled by England were known as British North America.
In 1791 large areas of what is now Quebec and Ontario were divided into Upper Canada, (Ontario), and Lower Canada, (Quebec).
The next change came in 1841 when the Act of Union changed the names to Canada West (Ontario), and Canada East, (Quebec).
These names were again changed in 1867 by the British North America Act which included Ontario and Quebec as Provinces, under those names.
The areas that these various names alluded to have also changed over the years, but for our research the names cover the areas that the Duncan family lived in.

Wellcome Historical Medical Library, 1925, 1968, shows two army surgeons by the name of William Duncan in the 18th century:-The first, #105 on page 6, is surgeon to "Rich's (8th) Dragoons" from 15 Sept 1727 - Feb 1745. The second, #124 on page 7, is surgeon to "Carpenters Horse (3rd) Dragoons",from 30 may 1730 - Feb 1740.
According to the National Army Museum in Chelsea, "Rich's (8th) Dragoons", later redesignated "8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars", was initially recruited in Ireland.
The Grand Lodge of A.F.& A. Masons of Ireland say that there was a Lodge attached to the 8th Dragoon Guards but it was founded in 1757 and the name of William Duncan does not appear on the membership register. There was a William Duncan registered as a member of Lodge # 472, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrem, on the 16th November 1798. He is also shown as a founding member of Lodge # 866, Newtowngore, Co. Leitrem, founded on 2nd May 1799. Both of these places are within a few miles of Corigeencor Bridge where later Duncans are know to have lived.

All of the above emigrated to Canada along with their mother Jane Elliot Duncan, except Henry. Little or nothing is heard of the mother after she arrived in Canada.
Their other brother, named Henry, did not emigrate. He was a teacher and taught, at least at one time, in the town of Dromahair. Co Leitrem. This brother had ten children. These were:- sons,Robert, James, John and William. Daughters, Charlotte, Jane, Sarah, Isabella, Mary and Lizzie. According to the Asst. Registrar of Births, Deaths in that area, ( who was 70 years old in 1931,) that as far as he could remember three of the boys emigrated, probably to Canada, though nothing was ever heard from Robert and James. It was thought that they may have drowned or met foul play. The six girls also were thought to have emigrated. The last son, William, stayed in Ireland and was considered the last of the family when he died in 1930, at the age of 90. This William was a carpenter and builder and a man of great interlect. He had two children, Harry and Jane, both who died young.
Henry Duncan, the teacher, was the son of the William Duncan of the Corigeencor Bridge mill owner. The Asst Registrar was taught by him in his youth.

All born in Upper Canada.
William came to Canada selling linen from his, or his families mill. He apparently liked the country as he came over a second time and bought 200 acres in 1827, at the corner of what is now the N.W. corner of Sheppard and Dufferin, west to Keele Street in present day Toronto. He paid $3.50 an acre for the land. It was Lot 16, 3rd concession west of Yonge Street.. Later he bought four more farms for his brothers who followed him over to Canada. Still later on he bought farms for his nine sons.
His farm was named "Dublin" and later a small village grew up on the corners and was know as Dublin Corners.
William was more than a farmer as he was involved as a contractor in the building of the Welland Canal where he made a lot of money. One report states that he was a Dynamiter.
He built a log schoolhouse on his property when his children became of school age. He also hired a school teacher until the township built a public school.
He was also a Justice of the Peace and a Trustee on the erection of the Wesleyan Methodist church in Downsview. Though he was Church of England while in Ireland he became a Wesleyan Methodist in Canada as that was the only church in the area.
He was one of the founders of the Grouse Hill Loyal
Orange Lodge #191 The 1861 Agricultural census shows William Duncan as having 190 acres which were divided into:- under crops 76 acres; Pasture 16; orchards and gardens 2; Woodland 96.
His crops include 15 acres of spring wheat; 2 of barley; 6 of peas; 24 of oats; 2 of buck wheat; 1 of potatoes; as well as wool, cider, carrots, butter, and hay. He had 1 steer, 4 milk cows, 4 horses, 2 colts and 27 sheep. It would appear that he had a very self sufficient operation with product for sale as well as for his own family use.
DUBLIN HOUSE
Built by William Duncan on Lot. 16, 3rd Concession West of Younge Street, which is now the N.W. corner of Sheppard and Dufferin in Toronto. The house wa built between the years of 1830 and 1833.

Sarah was educated at the school on her fathers farm and then at Wesleyan Female College in Hamilton. She took honours in English, Latin, Art and Penmanship. A pencil drawing done when she was 17 of a castle in a rural English scene was in the Perkins Bull Collection in Brampton High School. After marrying Bartholomew Hill Bull Sarah settled in Brampton in Hawthorn Lodge. Her husband was President of the Prohibition Association, and established a prize herd of Jersey cattle. There was some cooperation with his brother in law, David Duncan, who also raised prize Jerseys.
Their son William Perkins Bull became a Lawyer in Toronto and later wrote many books on various aspects of the history of Peel County. Some of the information on the Duncan genealogy came from his research now in the Peel County Archives in Brampton.
William Perkins Bull is also credited with introducing the Orange Order into Latin America. He also donated a hospital at Putney Heath in London, England, to the Allies during the 1914 -1918 War. He maintained residences in Toronto and London, England.

Died of injuries received when the horses he was driving ran away, frightened by one of the first trains on the newly constructed railway that crossed their farm. The original injury was a broken leg in two places below the knee. Due to a misunderstanding it was hours before a Doctor arrived and then two came at the same time. The leg was set but gangrene set in and the leg had to be amputated below the knee. There was no anaesthetic available so Adam was strapped down to the kitchen table, and with his brothers helping to hold him down, the leg was removed with a saw and knife. Adam was an active member of the Sons of Temperance and would not take any brandy to help counteract the pain. When the Doctor came on his next visit the leg was found to be still gangrenous and another amputation was carried out, this time above the knee. Some days later Adam died of lockjaw.

Duncan and the West half to Nellie Duncan, and Lot 17 to be shared between the two. Annie and Nellie were his nieces, and the daughters of David Duncan.

MOATFIELD
Built by David Duncan in 1863 on Lot 11, 3rd Concession East of Yonge Street at what is presently the north side of York Mills Road west of Don Mills Road, in Toronto. Gordon David Duncan inheritd Moatfield from his father. His widow Kate Duncan was the last resident. She willed the house to North York in 1972 in the hope that would not be demolished. The house stood empty for many years while a great deal of debate went on as to what to do with it, until it was purchased by the three Tzioumis brothers. On Sunday Dec 7th 1986 it was moved to a new location on Moatfield Drive which is part of the original 200 acre farm. Over the next two years it was renovated, refurbished, and added to. The new section was built to match the original building with importd brick, limestone, and "gingerbread" trim. The result is a harmonious blend of a heritage home enhanced by subtle modern adornments. The building was opened as "The David Duncan House", Fine Dining. After a couple of visits in 1995, I can honestly say the results, as well as the food, are exceptionally good, and are well worth a visit.

James owned 200 acres of land, (Lot 19, Concession 5, West), and rented 200 more. He willed the farm to his sons William and James. He was a gentleman and was renowned for wearing a plug hat and white shirt while working in the fields. He was in the local council and was Chairman at Temperance meetings. This however did not stop him from joining his friend Dr. Bull, in "Little's" Tavern, in Weston, and having a few drinks. Ann Moore Duncan died at the age of 38. She was said to be mourned by her ten children. Here are shown only nine., The 1851 Ontario Census, (York Co. York Township), shows James Duncan as a widower. His wife's last child was born in 1851 so she must have died just before the Census. James was also shown as a farmer with a one story log house. In the 1861 census he is shown as having a two story brick house. Between the 1851 and 1861 census's his sons James and George as well as daughter Martha have all left home. The 1871 census shows that only John is left at home.

This is an unconfirmed relationship. Thomas seems to have left the area where his family lived and appears in no local records. However the will of Martha A Duncan leaves a bequest to her nephew Gordon Duncan. This Gordon lived in California. The only brother or sister of Martha's that has not been recorded with their offspring is Thomas Duncan, her brother. This would seem to indicate that Thomas had moved to the United States and had a son Gordon. He may have been a only child as there is no mention of any of his brothers or sisters in the will. Martha's only two other nieces, Mary Coons and Victoria Duncan, are mentioned in the will.

Joseph was born in Emery Ontario and grew up on the family farm. He studied at Trinty in Toronto and got his Medical Degree. Upon graduating he married and set up practice in Malton, Peel Co. Ontario. He started his family in Malton, but later moved to Hunter North Dakota in the United States. His daughter Victoria, and his son James were both born in Hunter. It would appear that his wife Mary, apparently, was not over-joyed by the move from the Toronto area to what must have been a rather small prairie village. While in Hunter Joseph went back to Emery for the funeral of his father, James, who was killed by being run over by a train. In 1910 the family again moved this time to Altorado in Southern Alberta, Canada. Joseph had come to Altorado in 1909 and had obtained land there. According to his daughter Victoia they lived at 8-5-10 (the land designation) for the six summer months, and 24-5-10 for the six winter months. Altorado had a population of around 100 people. It had been founded by Mormons on the expectation that the railway would pass through it. When the railway did arrive it passed 6 miles north of the village. The village died. Dr Duncan and his family moved to Etzikom where his last child was born. While in Etzikom Dr. Duncan ran a pool hall as well as his medical practice. It was said that when he needed to operate he covered his pool table and then operated right there. The pool hall and medical practice was eventually destroyed by a tornado. The family moved again to Manyberries further east but still in southern Alberta. During the time there were there Dr. Duncan assisted the Canadian
Pacific Railway doctor as well as running his own practice. The Manyberries property was finally sold to James Underahl during the depression and drought that decimated the area. The family moved north to Lethbridge. Joseph worked later in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he died in 1947. Mrs Mary Duncan died in Lethbridge in 1943. Both are buried in Lethbridge.

Mary Duncan was born in Malton, Ontario, the eldest child of Dr. Joseph Duncan and Mary "May" Hunter. She moved with her parents to Hunter, North Dakota, U.S.A. where her father practiced medicine. In 1910 the family, which now included a brother, James, and two sisters, Yetta and Victoria, moved to Etzikom, in southern Alberta, Canada. Another girl, Josephine, was born to the family but died as an infant. Mary, now in her teens, taught school in Manyberries and Etzikom in Alberta, until she met and married Itha Coons in 1917. The story is told that he noticed her while pitching for the visiting Stavely Baseball Team because she was the most vocal of the local hecklers. Itha worked as a grain buyer, as well as ranching, in Stavely until he and Mary moved to Lamont, Alberta, in 1917. Here they had six children before moving to Vegreville, Alberta. During the war Itha, (an American by birth), worked on the Alaska Highway, which was then being built by the Americans. Mary gave piano lessons while in Lamont and Vegreville and also was hired to play the piano at the Hudson Bay Department Store in Edmonton. She was Superintendant of the United Church Sunday School in Lamont.
She was a woman of strong character and many abilities who worked hard to get the best for her family. She was a good teacher and a very good piano player. Although she did not get out too much towards the end of her life she kept a keen interest in all things, but especially her family. She died in 1964 in Vegreville.
Itha Cornelius Coons was born in Morral Town, Marion Co. Ohio, U.S.A. in 1882. He lived with his family in Ohio and Duluth, Minnesota, before the family moved to Stavely, Alberta, Canada. There was, by this time, two sisters, Beatrice and Mildred, as well as a brother, Frank. Here he worked in a hardware store while farming with his father and the rest of the family on their homestead. He married Mary Duncan in 1917 and moved to Lamont, Alberta, where he was a grain buyer. Later the family moved to Vegreville, Alberta, where he and Mary stayed till they died. Itha was a quiet gentleman who loved fishing and hunting. In 1967, during Canada's Centennial, he was honoured as an Alberta Pioneer.

Leroy Coons was born and educated in Lamont, Alberta, and then attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He was studying to be a Doctor. He cut short his stay at University to join the forces when war was declared, meaning to return to his studies on his return. He enlisted in the Calgary Tanks. After training in Canada he became an instructor in Dundurn, Saskatchewan where he was promoted to Captain. He later was shipped over to England as a Lieutenant, where he joined The First Hussars, another Canadian Tank Regiment. He was later sent back to the United States for further traing and then back to England. While stationed and waiting in England he was asked to become a gunnery instructor at the Lulworth Gunnery School. When D Day, (the invasion of Europe) came his regiment was shipped over to France and was involved in heavy fighting, and had many casualties. LeRoy, (or Roy), managed to leave his training school and somehow got over to France to join his Regiment though officially he was absent without leave from his unit, The Lulworth Gunnery School. He was taken on the strength of his tank regiment and went into action with them. He was found Not Guilty of any charges against him. During the large and bloody tank battle at Falaise, which was to break out of the Canadian and British beach head around Caen, his Sherman tank was struck by a German Shell and he was killed.

All born in Upper Canada, (Ontario).
John Duncan came to Canada around 1830 and bought a farm in the community of Emery in York Township, York County. He had 200 acres on Lot 23 concession 6 West of Younge Street. His house was built on a tributary of the Humber river called Burns, or Duncan Creek, He also built a saw mill on the creek to process the white pine there was on his lot. He supplied lumber for the Pine Ridge Church that was built in that area. In the 1851 census he had 200 acres of which 70 were under cultivation. There was also 80 acres of wood, and three acres of garden. His produce seemed to include peas, wool, potatoes and oats. In this census it shows that his eldest daughter Jane had already left home. At the time of his death his assets included horses, colts, cows steers, sheep, lambs, pigs, cords of wood, farm eguipment, household furniture, fall wheat, spring crop and meadow.

The first John is shown only in the 1851 census. The fact that there was a second John in the family makes it certain that the first John died as a child. In the 1891 census all the sons and daughters have left home except for James and Henry who are 30 and 27 years old respectively, and are living with their mother. The 1851 census shows the family as living an a one story brick house in West York Township.

The Ontario Census Of 1881 for Peel County shows a widow Mary Griffith and her seven year old son Thomas, living with Adam Duncan, who is probably her younger brother.

In the 1881 Ontario Census for Peel County, Adam Duncan. Age 28, is shown living with a Mary Griffith, Widow, and Thomas Griffith, her son, aged 7. This would seem to be Adams older sister who apparently was widowed early in her marriage. Adam Duncan was on the Gore of Toronto Council in 1880 and 1882. Though he married there were no children.

Well! Did you find a lot missing from this history? Are there many mistakes that you know of? Believe me, nobody knows better then I how much is missing and I am sorry for that. Mistakes? Well if I knew of them I would have corrected them, but there is bound to be some. Hopefully this will be added to in the future as life goes on and Duncans keep on getting born. Perhaps some one else will take it on themselves to keep it up to date. Remember this is just a start. There is no end.
