CHURCH
Welcoming Neighbors Nurturing Faith Transforming Our World
January 28, 2018 Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany
Sermon Series: Finding the Good: The Quest for Christian Values in 21st Century America
Gracious God, help us to look at one another through your eyes. Open our hearts to receive each other’s stories.
Help us today to approach someone we don’t know, not as a stranger, but as a friend of yours we haven’t met yet. Amen.
PRELUDE ARISE, MY SOUL, ARISE (ARR. DAN FORREST)
INTROIT Arise, Shine, for Your Light Is Come (SKINNER CHÁVEZ-MELO) SANCTUARY CHOIR
*HYMN 549 red book WHERE CHARITY AND LOVE PREVAIL
*CALL TO WORSHIP Here, we gather to hear the Word. Here, we gather to experience the wonder of God’s grace. Let us give thanks to the Lord who provides so abundantly! Together, let us worship God!
*OPENING PRAYER Holy God, joy of the universe, it is your awesome love that brings us here. You awaken within us a loving response, which hungers and thirsts for your truth and beauty. As we worship you, do not give us the blessings we want but the ones we most need. Satisfy us with the truth that we may need, though such truth might be most uncomfortable, and confront us with your holy beauty that will often cause us pain before it brings healing. Through Christ Jesus your joyful Son. Amen.
MOMENT OF TEACHING 11:00 A.M. ONLY Please invite our children forward, singing: This, this is where children belong,
welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s word, bread and cup, prayer, and song: this is where children belong.
Children may depart for The Worship Place in Room 180, or return to their seats.

for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

appreciation to a valued staff member with a contribution to a love gift. Joe has given us more than seven years of service at WUMC.

Messy Church in February
Our next Messy Church is Tuesday, February 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Our theme is “True Family,” based on the idea of families. Jesus asked the question, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Hmmm – is that really a hard question to answer? Come to Messy Church as we look at what makes a family! We will also do some celebrating around Valentines’ Day as well as serve pancakes for dinner to observe Shrove Tuesday. Wow – we will be busy – and messy with activities, games and Celebration Time. Be sure to join us for this all age experience! Questions? Contact Cindy Banek (229-1771).
Ash Wednesday Services Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a period of spiritual discipline, fasting and prayer, which leads to Easter. On Wednesday, February 14, you are invited to worship at noon or 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The service will include the imposition of ashes, a reminder of our mortality and belonging to God, and communion. All are welcome.
Senior Pastor’s Midweek Bible Study for Lent and Sermon Series
During the six weeks of Lent, we will study What Makes a Hero? The Death-Defying Ministry of Jesus, by Matt Rawle. In our study we will look at how we can draw important truths from our encounters with heroes—both real-life and fictional—and understand how Jesus redefines the entire concept of hero through his life, ministry, and death. Our Bible study will be held on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) and repeated on Thursday (10:30 a.m.), beginning February 21/22. We will examine the following themes: 1. Good, Evil, and God 2. Right, Wrong, and Holy 3. Us, Them, and the Body of Christ
4. Have, Have-Not, and the Kingdom of God 5. Old, New, and Covenant 6. Life, Death, and Resurrection
Pastor Bill and Pastor Meghan will preach a sermon series following the same topics beginning Sunday, February 18 and concluding with Easter on Sunday, April 1.
Position Available The church is looking to hire a part-time, 20 hours a week bookkeeper. Will require working Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Responsibilities will include paying bills, recording contributions and other office duties as required. Prior experience and knowledge of accounting software and membership database a plus. Please send resumes to Nethea Calloway at [email protected] or to the church address; WUMC: Nethea Calloway 500 Jamestown Road Williamsburg, VA 23185
