Wilmington University 2009-2010 Fact Book 7
Wilmington University Profile History: Wilmington University is an independent coeducational institution of higher education offering associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degree programs. The University was chartered by the State of Delaware as a non-profit, four-year institution of higher learning on December 27, 1967. On June 27, 1975, Wilmington University was accredited and admitted to full membership by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Universities and Schools. The University initiated its first graduate program, a Master of Business Administration degree, in February 1977. In 1991, the Doctor of Education in Innovation and Leadership was begun and offered in both the northern and southern portions of the state. A Doctor of Business Administration program was initiated in the spring of 2008. To accommodate the institution’s growth at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the New Castle site has undergone considerable renovation and construction over the past fifteen years. The Pratt Student Center was completed in 1988. The Peoples Library Building opened in 1995 and an additional classroom and student services building, The Admissions and Classroom Center, opened in 2000 and was renamed the Audrey Kohl Doberstein Admissions Center in the fall of 2007. In the almost four decades of the University’s existence, it has expanded its locations beyond New Castle to include Dover Air Force Base (1974), Georgetown in partnership with Delaware Technical and Community College (1980), the Customs House in Wilmington (1981), Silver Lake Plaza in Dover (1983), and Rehoboth Beach (1999). The Customs House in Wilmington and Silver Lake Plaza in Dover have now been replaced by the Woodrow Wilson Graduate Center in New Castle Corporate Commons (opened in August 2004) and the new Dover facility (opened in January 2004). In September of 2007, Wilmington University expanded to 3 locations in New Jersey: Burlington County College, and Cumberland and Salem Community Colleges. The governance of Wilmington University rests with the Board of Trustees which is self-perpetuating. Dr. Donald E. Ross was appointed founding President late in 1967 and held the office from 1968 through 1977. He was succeeded by Nicholas N. Mazarella who served as Acting President from July 1, 1977 through January 30, 1979. Dr. Audrey K. Doberstein became President on April 6, 1979. Upon Dr. Doberstein’s retirement in June of 2005, Dr. Jack P. Varsalona was appointed President. In September of 2007, Wilmington College officially became known as Wilmington University in order to better reflect the evolving nature of the institution. Locations: The main campus of Wilmington University is located in New Castle, Delaware. It is approximately six miles south of Wilmington on U.S. Route 13, and adjacent to Interstate Highway I-95 and I-495.
