Words from Wang

As I drank my coffee this morning, I paged through another catalog of “useless stuff” that had arrived in the mail yesterday. We’ve been getting a mailbox full of catalogs regularly since the end of October. I have to marvel at the creative minds that come up with the stuff inside of them. I also understand that the phrase “useless stuff” is relative; maybe you actually need a mo-tion activated tissue box holder that sneezes when you reach for a tissue. Who am I to judge?! ‘Tis the season….of catalogs and commercials and advertisements urging us to buy; and it has arrived even earlier this year – but I’ll spare you that sermon! I will remind you, however, that we are entering the season of Advent, a time of reflective preparation as we await the arrival of the Christ Child; a season in which we name and celebrate the gifts of God’s hope, peace, love, and joy. I encourage you then, to reflect on what kinds of gifts you might be prepared to offer to others as we approach the Christmas season. Imagine what you might find if you browsed through a catalog entitled “The Gifts of God” (the price on each of course being $0.00). Generosity, kindness, love, joy, peace, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, self-control - try these last two in a crowded parking lot or store- come to mind as gifts we need to share and receive. (Galatians 5) What other gifts do you have to share – compassion, a smile, an encouraging word? How creative can you be in coming up with useful gifts that make a difference in people’s lives and don’t cost anything?!

Don’t get me wrong – sometimes useless stuff is fun to give! We all need humor in our lives; laughter is a gift! So go ahead, order the mini shop vac sporting a smiling face that sits on a desk waiting to vacuum up crumbs (because actually that’s useful, right?). Just make sure to stock up on patience, love, and kindness as well!

Peace, Pastor Judy

This is a reminder that you can help our church finances by participating in Funds for Friends; if

you make any purchases at Richter’s Market in Twin Lakes or Burlington. Please ask for a “Fund for

Friends” sticker to be placed on your receipt. Turn in the receipt within the following year and the

church will receive 1% in return. Containers maybe found in the church’s entryways. We have raised

$72 this year today.

Want to help Wilmot UMC raise funds? Just go to your computer and go to the website:

Goodsearch.com (search engine) and Goodshop.com (online shopping) and the church will re-

ceive a percentage of donations when you use these sites. Please specify the charity: Wilmot United

Methodist Church. Last year we received $19.64, and this year $16.74.

There is also another unique, new way that you can help us. By sharing your opinion at Good-

surverys.com and completing an offer at Goodoffers.com, you’ll automatically earn us donations for

free. Instantly raise about $1 each time— it’s fun, easy and won’t cost you a thing, so get started now!

If you shop at Woodman’s Market, you can purchase gift cards in denominations of $50 and

$100 as part of Living Waters Scrip program. Living Waters will receive 5% profit from the cards and

will pay 2 ½% to the local church based on the size of the church’s order. If you would like a gift card,

please let Doris Carnahan (262-877-9876) know at least a week in advance due to expiration dates,

and make checks out to “Living Waters”. We raised $57.50 so far this year.

PRAY FOR THE HARVEST (Matthew 9:37-38)

LET’S HELP KEEP HANDS AND HEADS WARM THIS WINTER

Are you handy with a crochet hook or knitting needles? Here is your chance to practice those skills. The folks from Calvary UCC and Wilmot UMC are going to collect

hats, gloves, mittens, and scarfs. We have plenty of yarn to help you get started. In Calvary, the yarn box will be located in the Friendship Hall. In Wilmot, the yarn box will be located in the Sanctuary. Don’t worry if you are not familiar with a crochet hook or a knitting needle you can still take part in this special event and help keep someone’s head or hands warm this winter. You do not have to make any-thing. You can donate one already made by someone else (maybe the folks at your favorite store). You may start bringing your hats, scarves, and mittens to church and putting them on our special: “Let’s Keep Someone Warm Tree” through December 8th. The items will be donated to the Twin Lakes Area Food Pantry to distribute. If you have any questions call Glenna at 262-877-4141 If you know of anyone, please let us know so we can feature them in the newsletter.

Paul McKibben will preach. We will be doing the Trees on Parade. We still need ideas for Spoonful of

Love. Holiday Cookies fundraiser has started with 90 trays sold so far and we will put them together on

December 14th.

We received the October parsonage rent and still waiting for November. We received the Line

of Credit from Associated Bank. We currently have about $7,360 left to pay toward the lift and need

approximately $3000 to finish the project. We will send a letter to ask people to donating towards the

lift. Christmas Eve service will be December 24th at 5:00 PM and will need people for lighting the Ad-

vent candles. Commitment Sunday will be November 24th. Reminder no offering envelopes for 2014.
