Volume 104, Number 3 • March 2017

Judaism is a religion of personal tradition, of binding the past to the present and to

the future,” writes Rabbi Berel Wein in the first chapter of Perkei Avos: Teachings for Our Times. “It is a seamless chain of experience and memory, its knowledge and truths pass from parent to child, from teacher to student, from leaders to members of the community. It certainly is a religion of books and scholarship, but it is mainly a faith of communication between human beings.”

What individual has not wondered what Judaism means to him or her—then felt guilty for even asking the question? Rabbi Wein’s opening chapter highlights the very personal nature of Judaism, as well as the “seamless chain of experience and memory” that extends through the generations and runs between family members, teachers and students, and the community. This is certainly something we value and take to heart at Wilshire Boulevard Temple.

The notion that as much as books and scholarship have a significant role in our lives and religion, “it is the personal

acquaintanceship and relationship with people—not just with “scholarly” books and recently concocted professional theses—that provides Judaism with its constant vitality and strength,” Rabbi Wein continues. “This is why storytelling is so much a part of Jewish life and tradition.”

As you read this month’s Bulletin, look for links of this chain of experience and memory—past, present, and future—along with the notice of the many opportunities to engage, communicate, and participate with others. For example: Purim can be highlighted by the adult-themed Rat Pack Purim on Saturday, March 11, and by Purim with a Purpose, the annual Purim Carnival for families with children of all ages, on Sunday, March 12 … look at what our children

are doing at Brawerman, in Religious School, and at the Early Childhood Centers … see how parents and families are helping out in the schools and with our camps.

Read up on all the wonderful programming we have to offer you this month. The opportunities are endless.

Torah Portion

Parashat Ki Tisa Exodus 30:11-34:35

Growth—Never a Straight Line

In our Torah journey this month, we find the famous incident of the molten calf, in which our ancestors created

an idol to worship to help deal with the unknown. We had received the Torah in an incredible encounter with God at Mount Sinai; and shortly thereafter we became afraid and uncertain. This chronology is difficult for several of our Torah commentators, who suggest that the Torah is not presented chronologically in order to cope with the unease that comes from seeing people create the molten calf after

they receive Torah. The hope is that after receiving Torah, people would no longer need the idol.

This chronology is not problematic for me. I find it very much in line with the journey of growth and transformation. Our growth is not linear. We commit to new paths, to intentions of how we want to be in the

world, and then we go back and repeat the same

patterns. This is to be expected. The important moment is what we do once we have slipped back. Do we give up or do we reflect and recommit?

We read this Torah portion about six months after our High Holy Days. We are now halfway through the Jewish year, and this parashat comes at just the right moment for us to reflect on how we are doing with the changes and growth in our lives we were seeking at the beginning of the year. How are we doing? Are we acting in the world, with ourselves and with others, in ways that reflect the deep values with which we align on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur? And in what ways have we slipped back into old patterns?

Growth is never a straight shot. It twists and turns, but we can always be in forward motion if we continue to stay awake—reflecting and recommitting on each curve.

Alumni HighlightsJamie Dodd, Brawerman class of 2010 and Mann Family Early Childhood Center graduate, graduated in 2016 from Beverly Hills High School, where she was a four-year varsity swimmer, two-time

swimming co-MVP, and all-league honoree. She earned the high school’s Co-Athlete of the Year Award and is the school’s record holder in the 500-meter freestyle. Jamie was recruited by several schools and accepted a Division I swimming scholarship from San Jose State University, where she is studying hotel and hospitality management. At the end of February, she competed at Texas A&M in College Station, TX at the Conference Championship. She remains close to many of her Brawerman classmates and recently visited the campus to chat with some of her favorite teachers.

Glazer and Mann Early Childhood Centers

On January 28, our Erika J. Glazer and Mann Family Early Childhood Centers held their Annual Gala, The Snow Ball, at The Montage Beverly Hills. All proceeds from this amazing night help support scholarships and enrichment programs for the

Early Childhood Centers. We are so thankful for the Gala committee for its hard work—and for all the generous supporters of this investment in our future.

The Snow Ball Gala

Brawerman Elementary School

Brawerman West students had some innovative math and science homework last month. The assignment was

to bring their parents to school for the first-annual Math and Science Night on February 16, an evening of shared explorations, activities, learning, and enjoyment. Guided by Brawerman faculty, students and parents enjoyed a variety of educational experiences: they created magnetic slime, made and tasted ice cream, cracked mystery codes at Spy School using algorithms and invisible ink, and determined heart rates during exercise using Heart Math. Andrea Weinstein, Director of Curriculum Grades 3-6 at Brawerman West, noted, “The goal of Math and Science Night is to provide hands-on educational experiences for parents and children. In addition to seeing all of the great work students do in the classroom at Kol HaKavod, this night allows parents to interact with their child in meaningful learning experiences.”

The Temple’s Religious School is the largest in L.A. and one of the largest in the country. Every month more than 600 children from kindergarten through high school participate in age-appropriate activities. New Hebrew and prayer lessons are part of the valued curriculum; innovative programs, such as Dor L’Door, bring religious school into the homes of schedule-challenged families; and new youth groups, WBTYdeux and Jr.WBTY, welcome both Religious School and Brawerman Elementary School students. On March 12 our religious schools’ reimagined, multigenerational Purim Carnival celebrates the traditional spring holiday as well as affords an opportunity to recognize and support a cornerstone of Jewish education in Los Angeles. This is not your Bubbe’s or Zayde’s religious school—but it is their Judaism, culture, heritage, and values honored from generation to generation.

Cathy Gordon has been instrumental

in creating a fun and meaningful religious school environment, balancing the needs and schedules of Temple families in the process. Recently named Head

of the Religious School after serving four years as principal of the Irmas Campus Religious School, Cathy is joined by Rabbi Rochelle Tulik, principal of the Glazer Campus Religious School and Director of Teen Programs, who will now serve as the Associate Director of the Religious School.

Cathy is a master educator with more than 35 years of involvement in Jewish education and camping who cares deeply about every child and family. She works toward making sure the curriculum is rich, the teachers excellent, and the school experience positive and rewarding for all. The innovation, excitement, and passion that Cathy brings are evident on both campuses.

Rabbi Tulik has spent 10 years in Jewish education and camping, the past four as principal of the Glazer Campus Religious School and, as of last fall, Director of Teen Programs. In collaboration, Rochelle and Cathy will continue to provide the meaningful and enjoyable Jewish educational program to the children and families of Wilshire Boulevard Temple.

Camps

The Camp Committee, under the leadership of its chair, Adam

Slutske (a camp parent, camp alum, Temple member, and Brawerman parent who is married to another camp alum), is currently composed of 24 camp parents and/or camp alumni. Meeting four times a year, they work toward the success of Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps

by assisting the director, Douglas Lynn, in identifying and fulfilling long-term strategic objectives; acting as ambassadors for the camps in the community; supporting fundraising efforts; and participating in the development of camp policies, events, and communications. Each committee member also sits on at least one camp subcommittee—alumni, parents, fundraising, governance, or strategic planning.

In late January, the Camp Committee gathered at the home of Doug and his wife, Jamie, for an entirely different reason: introducing one another to spouses and celebrating

Shabbat together. The dinner, prepared by camp Chef John Bard, began with Rabbi David Eshel leading Shabbat blessings. The Motzi was even more special with Camp Committee member Kim Schall’s homemade challah, which was followed by a friendly debate regarding which was the superior challah—cinnamon or chocolate chip!?

The tireless efforts of these 24 individuals come entirely from their love of and commitment to our camps. Many no longer have camp-age children, others are yet to become camp parents, but all believe in and support what camp represents and does for our campers.

The humble yet beloved Purim shpiel (“play” in Yiddish) is the only genuine folk theater that has survived for almost

2,000 years. Initially, theater and playacting was condemned by our Talmudic sages as frivolous at best, vulgar/pagan at worst. This view was crystallized during the Roman Era, when live theater was often cruel and violent and involved slaves—including Jews—as actors who were sometimes killed as part of the drama. Nevertheless, the rabbis faced a dilemma with the holiday of Purim, for the theatrical story of Esther is based on disguise, farce, melodrama, comedy, and victory over existential threat. Therefore, rejoicing, masquerade, irreverence, and even drunkenness became universal laws and customs of Purim.

Public reenactment began in the early centuries CE, but it was in medieval Europe that the shpiel got its real start as Jewish folk entertainment. The shows were acted primarily by poor people, students, musicians, dancers, acrobats, and artisans, and all roles were played by men and boys. They performed either in large public venues or privately for wealthy families, typically in their homes following the festive meal.

When the Jewish Enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries reached Eastern Europe, a new genre of parodies arose, written by the modernists against the traditionalists. These Purim shpiels included klezmer music, song and dance, comedy and melodrama, and political and social satire. Many believe that the Purim shpiel was the forerunner of both the Yiddish Theater and the Broadway musical.

It is the amateur folk quality of the Purim shpiel, however, and its ability to be ever-topical and irreverent that has guaranteed its survival in synagogues and Jewish schools to this day.

So Here’s My Shpiel…

Brownie Troop 4945 from Brawerman Elementary School East recently took a tour of the Karsh Family Social

Service Center and Leanse Ratner Family Food Pantry. Karsh Center Director Liz Ross talked to the girls about the Center’s new toiletries program, which started a few months ago and for which congregants donate new and unopened hotel and travel-size toiletries to give to the Center and Food Pantry clients. The Brownies then sorted toiletry items and made individual distribution bags.

Students from the Early Childhood Centers of Wilshire Boulevard Temple also visit the Karsh Center throughout the year, assembling and delivering to Karsh Center clients snack bags filled with tuna, crackers, fruit, and granola bars. The children gain so much by personally experiencing doing a mitzvah and giving back to the greater community.
