  Series I.  Book projects, 1963-1995Physical Description: ca. 42 lin. ft.Scope and Content NoteSeries I contains a nearly complete set of photographs for Swaan's entire book productionconsisting of 18 publications, four killed projects and one under consideration, arrangedchronologically by publication date. Most projects contain black-and-white prints withcaptions handwritten on the versos, arranged in plate order, rejected b/w prints generallyarranged geographically, duplicate b/w prints, b/w contact prints, color prints with captionsarranged in plate number order, rejected color transparancies and slides, color duplicates,and b/w negatives. Seven projects include Swaan's notes, and the files for book Japaneselantern include the manuscript draft.

Physical Description: 14.5 lin. ft.Scope and Content NoteSeries II contains photographs of geographical regions not published by Swaan in bookformat, arranged by campaign in rough chronological order, 1951-1995 (bulk 1988-1995).Coverage is extensive for Islamic Turkey and Egypt, ancient Egypt, India, Pakistan, and thelandscape of the American West, and stained glass. Also included are experimental prints,and images of South Africa, the age of Elizabeth of Russia, and Petra and Jerash. Someimages of sites in Turkey, Egypt and India duplicate those in Series I, which Swaan shotapproximately twenty five years earlier. Most images are represented only in colortransparencies and slides, and do not exist in printed form. A number of images were held atphoto stockhouses for commercial sale.
