BUSINESS TIPS

Top tips for success!

Effective Thinking – part 1The One Skill that Separates the Highest Achievers from the Rest of Us

History has proved time and again that the one skill that separates the highest achievers from the rest is their ability to think critically and creatively under difficult circumstances. In fact battles have been won, great monuments have been built and incredible breakthroughs have been made by individuals who were able to think effectively under difficult conditions while facing seemingly insurmountable problems.

What can we learn from these individuals?

What did they do specifically that helped them create the world as we know it?

Achieve Your Wildest Dreams by Becoming an Effective Thinker

The most important skill you can learn to master to achieve your life’s goals and objectives isn’t networking or relationships building, it’s not time management, sales or marketing. It’s none of these because these skills are worthless if you don’t have the capacity to think effectively under difficult situations.

The skill of effective thinking is incredibly powerful and it will naturally enhance all the other skills you have in your personal repertoire. You must simply take the time to learn and master this skill step-by-step.

While current treatments can help prevent further weakening of the bones, they are not particularly effective at restoring bone strength – known as bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, researchers found that using a combination of drugs led to a significant improvement in BMD, when compared to using either medicine on its own.

While this research is encouraging, there are still questions that need answering in the search for new treatment options for osteoporosis – further larger studies are likely.

Osteoporosis is one of the leading causes of fractured bones.

Drug combination offers hope for osteoporosis.

“Double drug hope for brittle bone sufferers”, reports the Daily Mail.

This headline follows a small but well-designed trial of treatments for postmenopausal osteoporosis. As women go through the menopause, levels of the hormone oestrogen begin to fall. This drop in oestrogen can lead to a thinning and weakening of the bones, increasing the risk of broken bones (fractures).

Making it Happen

Parking Review – Your Views? On behalf of Wimborne BID and the businesses of Wimborne I have been calling for a FULL REVIEW of parking in Wimborne Minster. After a lot of representation and persuasion EDDC have now agreed to consult!Car Parks should not just be about raising revenue for local Authorities. They are a service to the public, residents and visitors alike?

“Is there a relationship between car parking provision and town centre prosperity?”

The Mary Portas Review says yes?

Future Extensive Housing Development Will happen around Wimborne!Local councils have new and important responsibilities to the community!

Under the Localism Act 2011 (England), Local Government Finance Act 2012 (England) and the Community Empowerment and Renewal Bill (Scotland).

A detailed review may lead to altering some of the following dimensions to Car Parking provision:• Cost, Structure and pricing policy

(differentiation between short and long term, weekdays and weekends, peak and off-peak)

• Quantity of spaces and Location within town centre (for example, proximity to amenities, major access routes, or other modes of transport)

• Types of car parking (for example, on-street, off street, pay and display, pay on exit, barrier operated)

• Targeting of specific types of users (for example, shoppers, commuters, leisure users)

• Payment methods, Enforcement and fines

• Security measures

• Provision for disabled users

We want your comments and opinions to help to keep up pressure, to ensure that EDDC carry out a proper and comprehensive consultation process – please respond to [email protected] with your comments!

Meadows are man-made havens for wildlife and have been an essential part of the British landscape for thousands of years. They contain a stunning mixture of dozens of native flowers and grasses, along with numerous species of insects and birds, creating a wealth of biodiversity. The variety of plants ensures food for invertebrates, which in turn feed the birds such as kestrels, skylarks and chiffchaffs. Butterflies, bees and ladybirds and even mammals like rabbits, badgers and voles are all denizens of this quintessentially British wildlife habitat.

Wild as they may look, meadows are actually unimproved, traditionally managed grassland. They are primarily managed by grazing in the autumn and winter and hay-making in the summer, rather than intensive farming. June is primetime to enjoy the flowering glory of ox-eye daisies, bird’s foot trefoil, knapweed, meadow crane’s bill, orchids and many others. Cowslips were also once widespread meadow

flowers, but less commonly seen these days.

Sadly though, Britain’s wildflower meadows are in a crisis and in danger of becoming extinct. In the last 60 years, a staggering 90 per cent or more of our meadows have been lost to intensification of agriculture and urban development. Meadows are vital to wildlife and biodiversity but they are also an indelible part of British landscape, providing us with natural tranquillity and beauty rarely found anywhere else. To be able to lie down in a meadow on a glorious summer day, surrounded by wildflowers and humming bees is to have a peaceful connection with nature most of us would rather not lose.

Sale on railway sleepersnew and old from £15 + VAT

We opened on April 21st and are now open every weekend and also every day from July 14th through the summer, closing at the end of September.

On Sunday July 14th we are holding our annual Race Day when teams of three are invited to compete for the Dreamboats Silver Challenge Cup. There will be teas, homemade cakes, barbecue, bar, music and generally a fun time for everyone.

On Sunday August 25th we are having a Family Fun Day. There will be games and entertainment for children, refreshments and music for all as well as the opportunity to take a row on the river.

It will also be a chance to see how things are progressing with all the changes that are planned for the banks of the River Stour. We are hoping the new play area will be finished by then.

A special new idea for this year is the opportunity to buy a gift certificate that enables the recipient to enjoy the delights of rowing on our beautiful River Stour when they choose. A good idea for an unusual gift!

Wimborne In Bloom Coffee Morning raises over £400The Annual Spring Coffee Morning held at the home of Anthony and Christine Oliver this morning (Saturday 18th May) raised £409. With fine weather very contrary to what had been originally forecast earlier in the week around eighty people attended and they were able to sit out and enjoy the garden. The Wimborne in Bloom Committee were pleased with the result which was achieved in spite of the many other events taking place in the Town at the same time.

New Town Mayor, Cllr Andy Hampton, who has chosen Wimborne in Bloom as one of his nominated Charities, “for which we are most grateful” said Richard Nunn, Chairman, Wimborne in Bloom, was unable to attend, was represented by his daughter Alisha who not only helped throughout the morning but also drew the raffle.

Next event is the Wimborne Open Gardens Day on Sunday 23rd June.19 gardens will be open in and around the Town. There are some new ones, some returning after an absence and some regulars. Refreshments will be available at some of the venues including lunch at the Town Hall.

Judgement Day for the Town was also announced at the Coffee Morning, Tuesday 23rd July. “This year we are in just the Regional Competition”, said Mr Nunn, “but we appeal to everyone to help in keeping the Town clean and tidy in the lead up to judging”.

Households ‘face £600-a-year green energy levy’The cost of hitting European Union targets on green energy is likely to be more than £l6bn by 2020. With FAMILIES paying £600 a year towards green energy projects within seven years - according to Civitas think-tank claims.

This includes the cost of subsidies for wind farms and nuclear power improvements to the national grid and VAT on green costs. Its figures were calculated by the Renewable Energy Foundation, a charity that has campaigned against onshore wind farms

John Constable, director of the founda-tion, said the subsidies were likely to cause a decline in living standards.

“One third of this cost would hit households directly through their electricity bills, regardless of income, making it an intensely regressive measure,” he said.

“The remainder of the cost would be passed through from industrial and commercial customers and eventually be met by households from increases in the cost of living.

The study was rejected by the Depart-ment for Energy and Climate Change, which argues that bills will be brought down as a result of its green policies.

According to its estimates, household energy bills will be around £76 higher by 2020, driven up by green subsidies and rising gas prices.

However, the department said bills would be around £166 lower than they would otherwise be, partly because of more green appliances and lower energy usage.

A department spokesman said: “We don’t recognize these numbers. The report is a manifesto for locking the British economy into excessive reliance on imported gas from farflung, unstable parts of the world. It ignores our things.

First, it’s the global gas price, not green subsidies, that has primarily been pushing up energy bills.

Second, the costs of renewables are coming down, we’ve already cut the sub sidies for or onshore wind and solar and in future all green technologies will have to compete to deliver the best bang for the buck. Third, our household energy effi ciency policies are more than offsetting the costs of clean energy investment.”

Barbecued Maple Syrup Lamb

Bring out the barbie! With Fathers Day this month and hopefully some sunshine, June is a good month for get together and relaxed entertaining. This recipe is a great way to barbecue a leg of lamb, just ask the guys at Oakley Butchers to butterfly it which means taking the bone out and opening up the meat, this decreases cooking time and makes carving easy. The maple syrup is a perfect partner for the lamb and won’t fail to impress your guests. Keep it simple; serve with new potatoes tossed in minted butter, a mixed leaf salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice and perhaps some cherry tomatoes roasted on the vine. It’s important to rest the lamb for 10 mins before carving; this gives the meat a chance to absorb all the juices and flavours. So fire up the Barbie and get cooking!

IngredientsLeg of lamb butterflied approx. 5 ½lb - 2 ½ kg (will feed 6 to 8 people)2 cloves garlic cut into thin slivers2 sprigs fresh rosemarySalt and pepper

For the marinade100 ml olive oil75 ml sweet sherry2 tbl spns maple syrup {Plus extra to brush on}1 tbl spn balsamic vinegarJuice of 1 lemon

Method1. Make small incisions all over the lamb with a sharp knife.

2. Poke a sliver of garlic then a small sprig of rosemary into the holes.

3. Mix together the marinade ingredients

4. Place lamb into a shallow container, season all over and cover with the marinade ensuring the meat is well covered. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for a minimum of two hours or overnight for more flavour, turning occasionally.

5. When ready to cook bring the lamb back to room temperature and get the barbie nice and hot.

6. Place on the hottest part for 5 mins each side to sear the meat, and then move slightly away to cook more slowly basting with the marinade and turning frequently. Cook for approx 25 to 30 mins for pink, longer if you want it more well done. About 10 mins before the end start to brush with the extra maple syrup, the meat will go quite dark and will start to char, this all adds to the flavour.

7. Allow the meat to rest for 10 mins so if a little underdone don’t worry as it will continue to cook while resting. Ideally the outside will be charred and the inside pink.

8. Carve into thin slices and pour over any juices.

If you want to roast some vine tomatoes simply crush a garlic clove with some salt and mix with olive oil, toss the tomatoes leaving on the vine, and either cook in a hot oven or put on the bbq until they start to blister.

I read that Robinsons the big equestrian retailer was broken into recently and a lot of saddles stolen. Unfortunately theft in shops is always a problem. I have been broken into once at night and lost a lot of stock and at another time had my van stolen from outside the shop. Recently I lost a pair of expensive chaps; the thief must have tried them on, hid the packet and walked out wearing them. Theft is never right but to a small business like mine it can be the difference between surviving or going bust. The sad thing is it was probably someone I know who comes in to my shop regularly. I hope they can live with their conscience. Times are hard for all of us but if small businesses have to close through lack of support and theft shopping will become very boring.

Reading aloud also gives you a much better feel for what may be wrong in a whole number of areas that simply interacting with a screen does not.

Which leads to the second essential step in revision which is to line up any readers you can to advise on both how the novel work for them and any errors they can find. You can never re-read your own book with the innocent anticipation and fresh eyes of someone in a bookshop leafing through the opening pages for the first time. That sort of perspective at this time is vital.

Leaving the manuscript to one side for a few days will give you a bit of distance but you wrote it. You know it too well. So enlist any help you can. Ask a reading friend or two or to look at it before you give it to anyone in the publishing business or decide to publish it yourself. And give yourself time to think about what they say.

So check what you can yourself and then enlist the help of others. This may lead you to revise chunks of the text or simply to make minor amendments. Whatever actions you take are pretty much bound to improve the novel you have written. So don’t skip or rush this stage.

Next issue - agents and publishers.

So the last word is written. The plot hasn’t got any holes in it, your characters feel like real people, and there is a satisfying ending. That’s it isn’t it?The answer is almost certainly no! You should do at least two more things before you are ready to despatch the novel off to an agent or publisher. The first is to check that your book really is in the best shape it can be. There are factors common to all novels like such as spelling, punctuation and grammar that simply need to be right. On a computer those useful red and green lines will indicate there is something wrong. Don’t ignore them! If you are in doubt there is plenty of advice on correct usage on the net on topics such as the proper use of capital letters or ITALICS that will guide you to the right decision. There may be other things that you do that will irritate readers who would otherwise be enjoying your story. I have a habit of repeating words too frequently. I’ve found the best way of ensuring this doesn’t happen is to read the book aloud into a recording machine and then play it back (about half a page at a time). This process is also helpful in revealing other stylistic quirks that you may want to eradicate. Are you for example, unreasonably, using too many adverbs?

Hi Jason,

I’m putting my home on the market. What should I do to make its look its best in the property photographs?

Ken Sakiss

Hi Ken,

Buyers expect to see a good selection of photographs, illustrating every conceivable aspect of a property. But quantity isn’t everything. If pictures are badly composed, or just plain uninspiring, then buyers will simply switch off and look at another property.

From a purely technical point of view your agent should take pictures that will show your home at its best. However, the preparatory work is your job – and we’ve all seen examples of how poor a home looks if those preparations aren’t made!

The key is tidiness. Outside, make sure the garden looks well tended and clear of anything unsightly, like a rubbish bin. Keep driveways free of vehicles for the duration of the “shoot.”

In reception rooms plump up cushions; lay the dining table for a meal; children’s toys and magazines tidied away. Where possible, remove surplus pieces of furniture, large ornaments and dying houseplants, to create a feeling of more space. Try to get your kitchen looking as pristine as it did the day it was installed.

Beds must be made and do not leave clothing lying around. Fold bathroom towels neatly on their rails and remove unsightly collections of shampoo bottles, etc. Loo seats should always be down!

Check that all the lights work. Professionally photographed homes always have the lights on.

And finally, don’t be afraid to recommend to your agent the best angles for each shot - you will probably know what they are, and the photographer should appreciate it’s your home.

Good luck Jason
