BUSINESS TIPS

Top tips for success!

Effective Thinking Part 4 - Optimism and the Power of Positive Thinking, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life! The Definition of OptimismOptimism comes from the Latin word optimus, meaning “best,” which describes how an optimistic person is always looking for the best in any situation and expecting good things to happen. Optimism is the tendency to believe, expect or hope that things will turn out well. Even if something bad happens, like the loss of a job, an optimist sees the silver lining. For me, getting laid off was the catalyst

that allowed me to start my own business. As I packed up my office, my mind was already whirling with the possibilities ahead. Without that push, I may never have made the leap to self-employment. Losing my job was a good thing after all.

The emerging field of positive psychology studies the positive impact that optimism has on mental health. Other research shows that optimism may be good for my physical health too—optimists are sick less and live longer than pessimists. Apparently, a positive outlook on life strengthens the immune system (and the body’s defenses against illness), cardiovascular system (optimists have fewer heart attacks), and the body’s ability to handle stress.

£7.8bn in a bid to meet stringent new rules on capital ratios among British banks. The bulk of the fundraising will be via a rights issue. The lenders underlying pre-tax profits fell to £3.bn.

These days, it seems that everyone is stressed - too much to do and too little time to do it - times are tough, money is tight, and deadlines are imminent. What happens when you’re stressed? You tend to eat more, sleep less, skip the gym and feel rundown. Additionally, stress is linked to a number of illnesses, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and an increased risk for cancer. No wonder so many of us are gaining weight. A study in the July 2009 issue of the  American Journal of Epidemiology  studied stress related work demands, difficulty paying bills, strained  family  relationships, and depression or anxiety disorders in a nationally representative group of 1,355 men and women for more than nine years. The overall result? Men tend to gain weight when unable to make decisions at work, learn new job skills or perform interesting job duties. More types of stress affected women’s waistlines, according to the study. In addition to  weight gain associated with financial problems or a difficult job, women also gained weight when dealing with strained family relationships and feeling limited by life’s circumstances. Overall, this study found that people who reported increased stress gained more weight if they already

What Do You Think?More consumers think the UK economy will improve next year than those who think it will worsen, a survey has found. Some 36% of those polled believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months, with 29% of those questioned thinking it will worsen. The proportion

of those rating the economy as good was, at 13%, the highest since July last year. Which?

The High Street Future – Not As We Know It!Thousands of empty shops could be turned into homes after the government decided that some British high streets are no longer viable. Planning minister Nick Boles believes local authorities should give up trying to revive town centres that are blighted by rows of boarded-up shops and instead convert the empty properties into affordable homes.

The 15 Best DIY Tips - part 11 To avoid getting paint on the floor,

glue a paper plate to the bottom of the paint can. The plate should be five to eight centimeters wider than the can so it can catch drips.

2 To cover any scratches on wood furniture or floorboards, make a thick paste of instant coffee and a little water. Rub it into the nicks and scratches. You may need to apply several layers before the scratch is covered. Allow to dry, then apply a layer of furniture polish. Shoe polish is an excellent alternative and comes in a variety of colours. It works a treat.

3 Fix a squeaky door by sprinkling talcum powder on the hinges. This also works great for squeaky

floorboards.4 To keep paint fresh, all you need

to do is add four tablespoons of methylated spirits, then seal and store. Do not stir until using paint again.

5 Use dental floss to quiet a dripping tap until you can get it fixed. Tie one end of the floss around the tap and the other end of the dental floss down the drain. The drips travel along the thread instead of dripping into the sink.

IN OuR COMMuNITy

Mark Prisk visits London’s West End.

Plans to extend Business Improvement Districts to property ownersProperty owners could be included in Business Improvement Districts in the future. According to the government this will provide them with a greater role in revitalising their high streets. The proposal is included in new plans announced by Local Growth Minister Mark Prisk.

There are currently approximately 200 BIDS across the country and they bring local companies together to develop a vision for their area, pool funds and deliver projects to improve town centre safety, support local traders, establish parking initiatives and help to improve local high streets.

A BID is set up as a private company and is voluntary and business-led. Participating businesses pay a levy and decide on the projects that will be funded by the BID.

For example, the Love Loughborough Partnership has introduced a ‘trial a trade’ scheme for new businesses, a loyalty card scheme for students and free parking on Sundays.

Currently only businesses can formally pay into and vote in a business improvement district but it is planned the property owners will also be included. This will involve more local people, increase funding and boost support for local projects.

This is part of wider efforts by the Government to boost Business Improvement Districts. They have announced a £500,000 loan fund to set

up more BIDs and making changes so that BIDS can be set up in a business area rather than being restricted to administrative boundaries.

The consultation on these proposed changes runs until 17th September and details can be found www.gov.uk/government/news/reforms-to-bring-property-owners-into-the-high-street-mix

had higher body mass indexes. In other words,  if you’re overweight already, you’re even more likely to gain weight when under stress.Although everyone handles stress differently, these researchers believe that when coping with life’s stressful periods, people change their eating behaviours—and not for the better. Food isn’t the only factor that influences stress-induced weight gain; a person’s gender, the types of  foods  they eat, and whether or not the person is already overweight or obese are all contributing factors. This explains why some people gain more weight under stressful circumstances, while others may gain just a little or even lose weight.Beat Stress, Weigh Less: Create a Stress - Reduction Plan: Meditation * Yoga * Getting a  massage *

Working out * Deep breathing * Taking a nap* Reading a magazine* Taking a bath* Playing a game* Sitting quietly* Affection with a loved one or petOnce you’re into the habit of taking five to 10 minutes out a day for stress reduction, you should already be feeling somewhat better. Now it’s time to start focusing on the signs of stress that you may not be paying attention to. Are you anxious or irritable? Are  your muscles  tight? Is your appetite increased? Are you breathing quickly? Pay attention to these “hidden” signs of stress and how they affect you. Then when you’re faced with stress, take a few deep breaths, recognize the stress for what it is, and try to deal with the stressor as calmly and effectively as you can. If you have  cravings, remind yourself that  your body’s  hormones  are being tricked and this too shall pass. (Many find that drinking water, making a cup of hot tea or chewing on a piece of gum can help pass the time.

Known as the ‘miracle tree’ in the 70’s and 80’s, Petai cina (Leucaena leucocephala), is an amazingly versatile tropical plant that has a variety of uses including making jewellery and medicine.

In Indonesia and Thailand the young leaves, pods and seeds are added to Javanese salad, spicy peanut sauce and spicy fish wrapped in papaya. However, if eaten raw or in large quantities petai cina can be toxic and so care must be taken. For more information visit www.fao.org or www.eattheweeds.com.

If you would like to grow your own ‘miracle tree’ then you can buy the seeds from A Taste of Rasa Sayang.

To grow your own ‘miracle tree’ you will need:

1. Plant about 10 seeds in a pot of moist soil, leaving some uncovered. Then cover with cling film and place on a sunny windowsill. Add more water when necessary to keep the soil moist.

Grow Your Own ‘Miracle Tree’

2. A week later the shoots should appear. Continue to water occasionally.

3. When the new leaves have appeared they are ready to re-pot separately. In the summer you can leave petai outside, however they must be brought inside or placed under shelter on colder days.

4. In June, when the petai flowers, pollinate the small flowers by using a small paintbrush. Gently brush over the stigmas, spreading the pollen so that more bean pods grow.

For more information on gardening or to book a cookery class, botanical art class or catering service visit A Taste of Rasa Sayang on Facebook or Twitter, email Yayu at [email protected] or phone The Minster Press on 01202 882277.

5. Around October the leaves should be ready to harvest. Ensure that they are brown and dry before you remove them.

The urban landscape has many possible themes.

Over the next few articles I shall consider a few of the options, for this issue – Churches.

Tall buildings create perspective control problems and unless you spend a four-figure sum on a specialist perspective control lens for a digital SLR camera, viewpoint is the only option to avoid photos where the building looks as though it is falling backwards. The problem is caused by tilting the camera to get the whole building in the picture.

One possible solution is to move further away and photograph from a distance, Wimborne Minster can be effectively photographed across the meadows. In the examples shown here, a rural Dorset church has plenty of open space and distance enabling you to step back, choose a position to include an interesting foreground and keep the camera level so the church does not look distorted. Offsetting the position of the building creates a leading line with the wall and a balanced, pleasing composition. The 2 images of Christchurch Priory show how this technique can be used for either portrait or landscape images.

Alternatively get in close and move around the subject to get an unusual viewpoint. Bath Abbey roof and tower has strong lines directing the eye towards the tower, which looks normal, whereas the image of Notre Dame cathedral has been shot with a wide-angle setting close to the corner of the building producing a dramatic triangle shaped composition.

Finally consider time of day. By photographing in the evening the low sun creates warm light and at dusk, silhouettes produce dramatic outlines to the building. Roger Allen

Lions Youth Brass shine at the MinsterSome fifty young musicians aged between 11 and 19 gave a concert at the Minster on 22nd July which was free but generously supported by donations from the audience. The Lions Youth Brass band from Cheshire were on tour having played in Weymouth, Wareham and Poole and after Wimborne were going on to Dorchester. The evening was arranged and presented by the Wimborne and Ferndown lions Club

Despite the sweltering weather, the band provided music of an amazingly high standard and included several brilliant solos. The band’s musical director, Nigel Birch, thanked the Club for their organisation of the concert and praised the Minster as being ideally suited to brass band music and being the best venue they had played in.

The picture shows some of the band relaxing outside the Minster during the half time interval.

Foraging by Judy GodsallIt’s hard to imagine a life in which foraging for food is essential. Today, food shops and supermarkets provide us with a constant supply of food; we can even have food delivered to our door. However, these food outlets were not an option 10,000 years ago. In order to secure a meal, our ancestors had to scout the land, foraging for plants and seeds and hunting for meat and fish. It was a full-time job and communities had to work collectively. We could not live from wild foods alone in 21st Century, but it seems that in Britain, an interest in foraging has grown in recent years. Some forage because of environmental concerns and the cost of food, whilst others are drawn in by the opportunity to uncover a wealth of nutritious, seasonal and free ingredients. Before you raid nature’s larder, make sure you know how to forage safely. Remember, some plants and fungi are poisonous; a deadly fungus may have a similar appearance to an edible mushroom. Do not eat anything unless you are 100% certain that your identification is correct. You should also avoid foraging in an area where agricultural sprays have been used, as these can contaminate produce. If you want to learn about how to forage safely, visit Kingcombe Centre on Sunday 15th September and take part in Hedgerow Harvest. Revel in the local landscape at the Kingcombe

Centre, which is surrounded by nearly 1000 acres of nature reserve and learn about Kingcombe’s abundant supply of wild plants with expert and River Cottage regular, John Wright. There will be an opportunity to forage through the meadows and woodlands before you discuss and taste what has been gathered. John will also teach you how to identify plants, including those which are poisonous, and will introduce you to the law of foraging. We also have a Fungi Foray event with John on 16th November, where you can enjoy a brief introduction to fungi, followed by a guided walk with discussion and identification, and perhaps a taste if you’re lucky enough to find some edible fungi! For more information about events and courses at the Kingcombe Centre, please visit: www.kingcombe.org/

Welcome to our website

Good to be Outdoors a personal small family run business based in Corfe Mullen, Dorset.

Our aim is to run an ethical and honest company that sells good quality, locally sourced products at a reasonable price which are either UK supplied, sustainable, recyclable or have been hand crafted from recycled materials making them environmentally friendly. The products for use in the garden are lovingly made by hand with recycled wood in our very own workshop so are really made just for you!Our philosophy is to only sell product that we strongly believe in at a reasonable price so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as much as we do. We want to make being outdoors a great experience for the whole family!

Horse Bits Dorset LtdWith this warm wet weather the grass is really starting to grow again so animals that are prone to laminitis must be watched closely. Even if it looks like the grass is very short it’s amazing how much it can grow over night. Some people use a muzzle to restrict grazing. Shires have one that is fur lined to help prevent rubbing when the horse eats RRP £17.99. You must make sure it’s big enough so the horse can move it’s jaw as horses can still eat and drink with a muzzle (just not so much). Other people use products like Global Herbs laminitis prone liquid £28.95 for 1lt. This is fed with a small feed and can be used all year as a preventative measure. Whatever you decide to use prevention is better than cure - once a horse has had laminitis it will always be prone to get it again.

The cheque is presented to Elizabeth Purcell, CEO of the Lewis Manning Hospice (second from right), by representatives of the five local Rotary clubs (clockwise from left): Roy Salmon (Wimborne), Linda Winter (Swanage & Purbeck), Hazel Hatch (Parley) , Ann Banks (Ferndown) and John Perry (Wareham).

Rotary boost for Lewis-ManningFive local Rotary clubs have combined to provide a fantastic donation of £10,000.00 to furnish and equip a room the in the new £2.8m Lewis-Manning Hospice in Poole. The clubs, at Ferndown, Parley, Swanage & Purbeck, Wareham and Wimborne, were tasked to raise £5000.00. The balance - part of the proceeds from the recent disbandment of the Wimborne branch of Dorset Association for the Disabled - was provided through John Slow (president of Wimborne Rotary) in agreement with fellow trustees of the association.

Speaking of the donation Elizabeth Purcell, CEO of the Lewis-Manning Hospice, said: ‘The cheque is a fantastic boost for the hospice and for the growing number of patients that rely on us for the help we provide at a particularly distressing time.’

(Lewis-Manning Hospice offers free specialist palliative nursing care to around 650 local people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.)

Anne Banks, past president of Ferndown, the lead club, said: ‘Rotary clubs can only do so much on their own, and so much more when they combine their resources.

Furnishing and equipping a room at the Lewis-Manning Hospice is a case in point and we are absolutely delighted that we could come together for such a worthwhile cause,’ she closed.

Market - Your Business

We had some great feedback from our advertisers in theWimborne “little guide” this Month.

One such Advertiser is DB Huntley Builders based in Broadstone.

He had these kind words to say about us. (see right)

“We’re getting lots of leads from our 1/2pg Advert and not only that, they are of good quality and in the areas that we are looking for work. I’m very pleased with our results.”

We pride ourselves on promoting local businesses in our community and love nothing more than being told that our adverts make a difference.

Publish - Your StoryOver the last few months we have been putting together a number of projects for Terence Anthony, a local author from Bournemouth.

We have supported Terence in all stages of the Production process.

We worked to establish the type of book terrence wanted and came up with a solution to suit. We helped Terence from start to finish with the design of his book including getting hold of various images to suit the style of his books to printing a small number of each book digitally for him to take away

and show to publishers.

Since his initial book we have designed and printed 4 Books in total (3 separate books and a

compilation).Terence has recently had his poetry books turned into lyrics, set to music and recorded on CD. We were delighted when Terence informed us he wanted us to design his CD Covers for him this month. (see finished design left).

We love all of our book projects and we take pride in our job to help create a High Quality books to be proud of.

Hello Jason,We’re ready to sell our home, but we’re going to be away for much of the late summer, should I wait until we get back?

Mr A FredrickHello Mr Fredrick,This is a question estate agents get asked every year around this time - and the first thing to say is even in late summer, there are good buyers about. As for the marketing and viewing side of things, leave everything to your estate agent. They are geared up to deal with this kind of situation. Indeed, when it comes to showing prospective buyers around, many agents prefer it when the seller isn’t around. They will also have special measures in place to safeguard your house keys – so no worries on that score. The only real issue you need to address is the question of security. Most burglaries take place when properties are empty – so you should aim to disguise the fact. In this context, having the estate agent visiting your home regularly is a big plus. Not only will it get a regular airing, but it’s also good to have someone dropping by now and then, just to keep an eye on the place.Of course, there are all sorts of other measures you can take. For example:

• In addition to the agent’s visits, enlist a friend or neighbour to keep your house looking lived-in: for example, by opening and closing curtains, keeping the hallway clear of junk mail (particularly important if your front door is glazed) - even parking their car in your driveway from time to time.

• Put one or two lights in different rooms on timer switches, and do the same with a radio (speech programmes rather than music).

• Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries.• If you are going to be away for a long

period, arrange for someone to keep the garden looking neat and cared-for (doubly important when you’re hoping to sell!)

• Finally, don’t leave valuable items visible through the windows.

Hope that helps, have a great holiday and good luck with your sale.Jason
