The cast from the impression is the most trusted piece of information to fully assess and produce a functioning prosthesis. Tech-niques of model analysis will be discussed to provide highly predict-able methods of determining the former positions of natural dentition. Proper model analysis will also help determine statically suitable load areas of the denture to help maximize design and control stresses. Selection of shade and tooth mold, will be reviewed. Beyond valuable communication and process content, each participant will have an op-portunity to setup an upper arch against a predetermined lower arch to provide hands-on practical experience that flows with the principles to be of the theory learned. This informational workshop will provide removable essentials and principles to increase your ability to provide quality denture care. Sign-up early! the Unique Position of the Denturist in the Detection, Intervention And Reporting of elder AbuseRaeann Rideout M.A. SponSored by poW lAborATorieS inC.10:45 am-12:30 pm

overview: Dental professionals are key health care providers – they are in a unique position, not only to address the dental health care needs of seniors, but also to identify suspected elder abuse and take a proactive role to assist patients/clients who are at risk or experienc-ing abuse. Seniors are the fastest-growing population in Ontario with number of seniors over 65 projected to be almost 4.2 million, or 24%, by 2036. Seniors are especially vulnerable to abuse, with two to ten percent of seniors experiencing abuse in Ontario. Given the number of seniors is steadily increasing, and thus the number of suspected elder abuse victims, it is imperative that dental professionals become aware of elder abuse. Through interactive discussions and case ex-amples Denturists and Staff will learn how to detect the signs of elder abuse for all forms of abuse, identify risk factors, recognize indicators of potential abusers and those abused and review intervention strate-gies including screening questions and tools. This educational session

will review best practice guidelines in responding to elder abuse with consideration of balancing health care professional’s duty to protect with the self-determination and rights of older adults. The lecture will examine the legal, moral and social obligations to properly address and report suspected abuse and neglect of older adults. Information and tools will also be provided to assist Denturists in how to access further information about agencies and organizations that can assist and support seniors in abusive situations.

Raeann Rideout M.A. is currently the Central East, Regional El-der Abuse Consultant for Elder Abuse Ontario. Raeann has worked for Elder Abuse Ontario for the past 11 years and has gained experi-ence working in the field of elder abuse for over 18 years. She brings expertise and knowledge from working with health care providers, Long-Term Care and Retirement Homes, social service agencies and justice partners. Raeann has experience in delivering front-line training to staff, public education to seniors, and community development skills through strengthening community partnerships and collaborating with regional, provincial and national stakeholders to enhance the response and prevention to elder abuse. In her role with Elder Abuse Ontario, she consults with seniors, families and agencies on elder abuse cases.

Raeann is currently co-chair of the Canadian Network for the Preven-tion of Elder Abuse. She was also Project Coordinator for the Kingston & Frontenac Elder Abuse Task Force for 5 years and previously worked for the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba and as a Consultant for the Manitoba Seniors Directorate.

overview: Although there are laws in Canada regulating the sale and use of electrical equipment, there is a lot of equipment in the dental industry that is not approved for sale because it does not include CSA or equivalent certification. Whether it is equipment bought online or bought from a supposedly reputable dealer, many Suppliers and Manufacturers take the risk by selling you noncom-pliant equipment because it costs a lot of money to comply. How-ever, the Buyer does share the responsibility of liability with the Supplier, Manufacturer and/or Importer.

Bill Dowe BA, Bus Admin & Econ. is Director of Henry Schein Canada’s Laboratory and Denturism division – Zahn Canada. He is based in the Niagara on the Lake, ON headquarters. Bill has im-mersed himself in the dental lab business for the past 12 years. Bill has helped both Laboratories and Denturists grow their businesses with strategic business plans.
