DePalo – Eng. 10 Inherit the Wind Essay Topics – 100 pts. Due: October 15 Choose an essay topic from one of the following below. You may also devise your own topic, as long as it is discussed with and approved by me. 1. Human Rights: Combine your review and understanding of the Universal Declaration of Rights with your reading of the play, Inherit the Wind. Which human rights are at stake and violated during this trial and particular event? Make sure you not only explain the injustice, but give a detailed description of the right being violated and why such a right is important not only in the play, but in reality as well. 2. Transformations: There are several dynamic characters in this play. Choose one that you feel changes the most from the beginning to the end of the play. Analyze how this character has changed and identify the motivating factors behind those changes. Be sure to cite specific examples that show the character’s before and after transformation as you trace it throughout the various parts of the work. 3. Proverbs: Brady begins and Drummond finishes this proverb from the Bible: “He who troubleth his own house, shall inherit the wind and the fool shall be a servant to the wise at heart.” Identify at least three conflicts in the play and develop your own proverb that relates to each conflict. In your essay, clearly explain the conflicts, what your proverb means, and how it relates to each conflict presented in the play. Be sure to cite specific examples that illustrate each conflict and how it is eventually resolved. Criteria Answer one of the above essay questions in a well organized 2.5 - 3 page minimum essay. I will be looking for specific references to examples from the play, as well as incorporation of class discussion/notes we compiled during the course of the unit.
