my numerous old car magazines; I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

Speaking of old cars, eBay can be a terrible temptation. While browsing about the web site an old 912 caught my eye. It was a 1966 (long nose, short wheelbase) and it had a 2.0L VW en-gine like a 914 or a 912E in place of its original engine. It was rough and I would have to tow it home from Utah. But what wonderful things might be done with it. I could build up the little VW engine and convert the whole

thing into an interesting autocross car. I could restore it to its original simple glory or even go crazy and convert it to a RS replica. The bidding was about to close and was only up to $2000 as I contemplated how it was indeed very rough. Bidding hit $2500 as I wondered what Gail would think of my buying a prize clunker. The bidding hit $2700. I read that it only had a little rust but some extra undercoat. This thing could sit in my garage for a decade. I watched the bidding end at $2850; I was proud of myself for showing such restraint. Then I noticed that the reserve had not been met… it will turn up again!

Next a 944S2 caught my eye. It was rough, but the engine, running gear and brakes would be a great bolt on upgrade for my 944S. Bidding was at three grand, cheap for all of those parts. My niece’s husband is parting out a 944 and its parts could be shoved into the old S2 and I could sell that for something. That would be a lot of work; where would I find the time? Hey look, a 944 Turbo! That was when I decided it was time to shut the com-puter down.

Thanks for Reading

The year is winding down and I am looking forward to our remain-ing events, the after breakfast photo rally on November first, the

Santa Clarita second breakfast the fol-lowing week end, our first Zone 8 con-cours on November 15th and the CAI holiday party on December 6th. We will have some new board members next year so don’t forget to vote (you should have a ballot). At the end of the year I will have completed my second term as president (which is the maximum al-lowed under the bylaws) and so my position will be filled by someone new and I will inherit the honorable office of past president. We are putting to-gether a calendar for next year and need suggestions from all of the mem-bers. If you would like to coordinate an event (such as a tour) let us know as well; we always need the help. I was thrilled to see my road test data spread-sheet on the CAI website. While recov-ering from my heart bypass I entered the data as I sorted through and reread

As of this writing there will only be one more issue of the newsletter unless a new editor steps for-ward! I will be step-ping down as your

newsletter editor after the December issue is produced. I believe strongly that the newsletter is an important vehi-cle for the club to share information and recruit new members who read our publication on-line. As the editor you can decide how many issues to produce each year, whether it will be in hard copy or electronic only format, and what the content will include. Being the editor has been a rewarding experience over the last six years but I feel it’s time for a new hand to take the wheel. The Editor can be an individual or a team effort, and the club has always been good about providing content for each issue. So, please consider stepping up and assume this important job!

This month’s issue includes a bal-lot for our Region Officers. In addition to voting please provide any comments, suggestions, or if interested a position you may be interested in volunteering for. You can return your ballot by mail. Please do as I had to print 86 of these and fold them into your newsletter. If I can take the time to do that, you can surly find the time to mail your ballot back! You can read about the club’s board of directors and procedures on our web site. From the home page click on the Membership button and select Bylaws of CAI.

Marvin Snodgrass was kind enough to write an article on the recent PCA Escape that he attended this sum-mer in Albuquerque. If you have the chance to go to one of these I can rec-ommend them highly!

Our annual Holiday Party is just around the corner! If you would like to volunteer or have something for the silent auction, contact Alice Rivera at [email protected].

I was wrong! The first CAI Zone 8 Concours IS NOT canceled! This should be a great event located at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. We will be needing volunteers to help with various tasks such as regis-tration, placing cars in the display area, runners for score sheets (great for the kids), timing judges, and tabulating scores. If you would like to help out

please contact Roy Jensen at [email protected]. The location of the concours is close enough to the majority of Zone 8 that we are looking forward to a great turnout. What we are really hoping for is a GREAT turnout by our own membership! This is a great motivator for really giving your pride and joy a good thorough cleaning and detail. Don’t be afraid that your older, well used Porsche may not be attractive enough to participate… I like to refer to this as “patina” on my well driven and enjoyed Porsche (208 thousand miles)! Your level of participation can range from display only to full concours. I like to sign up for the wash and shine class which includes the exterior (no undercarriage) and interior of the Por-

Judy and I took off the morning of Sep-tember 16th heading for Albuquerque, New Mexico. On our way we decided to take a little detour and take in the sites at Sedona, Arizona. I have loved the town every since I drove a truck for a living and used to go though there on some of my deliveries. It was good to see the town again and take one of the Pink Jeep tours. We headed back to Flagstaff via Hwy 89A as it was a nice drive, except when we hit rain part of the way back to Flagstaff. And every-

one knows how I hate to have my car dirty.

Bright and early Thursday we took off for Albuquerque and arrived there around noon, to find that we couldn’t get in to our rooms as they had a visit from one of the presidential candidates the night before and the entire hotel was in lock down. Not to worry as that gave me a couple of hours to clean the car before heading over to the Tanoan Country Club for the Peoples Choice car show which had a really good turn

out of approximately 100 Porsches. Up early Friday for a light break-

fast and our first tour which took us on some really fun roads up into the Jemez Mountains. We had lunch at a small family owned and run bed-n-breakfast. While waiting for the group (somewhere in the neighborhood of 28 Porsches) to head back to the motel it started to rain again! We sat there in the Cayman for a few minutes and then decided to head back down the hill by ourselves, which was about an hour drive back to Albuquerque. Besides, I had to get back to the motel before eve-rybody else so I could get the car cleaned up before anyone could see it dirty!

Saturday. We spent a few miles on surface streets heading out the east side of town and before you knew it we found ourselves on some more really nice Porsche roads through some small New Mexico towns on our way to Chi-mayo and other interesting destinations. On our way we had the opportunity to drive around the “Robert Redford Curve,” as that is where he rolled his beautiful 356 while filming a movie.

I received three books from Motor-books (www.motorbooks.com) for re-view, Autocross Performance Hand-book, Porsche High-Performance Driv-ing Handbook, and Porsche Sixty Years.

Autocross Performance Handbook by Richard Newton is one of Motor-books Workshop series. The book cov-ers topics related to autcrossing such as: choosing the best car, selecting a competition class, improving handling and performance, increasing cornering speeds, and prepping for competition. The book has 346 full color illustra-tions with many quotes from the world of autocross’ upper echelon of drivers to help illustrate a point. The book is written for a new autocross driver and covers most of the basics of driving and car preparation. While a good portion of the book is devoted to selecting a car, what modifications are best for a specific model, and deciding what Sports Car Club of America class you might drive it in, the sections on driv-ing and tuning your ride are pertinent to any driver. If you want to race in SCCA events this is a great book, if you want to learn to advanced driving

techniques, there are other books that concentrate just on those topics. I will probably use the book for material to train new drivers. Pages 155, cost $25.95.

Porsche High Performance Driv-ing Handbook by Vic Elford is a book that informs readers how to drive a Porsche to its limits. Vic Elford was one of the drivers that put Porsche on the racing map and is still winning vin-tage car races today. The 176 page book covers topics such as: accelerat-ing, braking, cornering, and shifting; high-performance road and track driv-ing; and achieving smoothness and balance in front-, mid- and rear engined cars. This is the second edition of this title and has been updated to include discussions of the more recent Porsches such as the Cayenne, Cayman, and Car-rera GT. The book is illustrated with many examples of the topics under discussion as well as historical photos. This book belongs on every Porsche driver’s book shelf if you want to be-come a better driver. I periodically pull down my copy and re-read it just to

reacquaint myself with techniques I may have forgotten or still have trouble with. Cost $29.95.

Porsche Sixty Years by Randy Lef-fingwell was the most recent book I received to review. Now on the eve of Porsche’s 60th anniversary, author and photographer Randy Leffingwell fo-cused his lens, examining each impor-tant model and put the cars into their broader context. Porsche Sixty Years is a large coffee table book with 296 full color photographs and interviews with key personnel that made Porsche what it is today. Randy has authored three other Motorbooks on Porsches includ-ing Porsche 911 Buyer’s Guide, Por-sche 911: Perfection by Design and Porsche Legends. In a single sitting with Porsche Sixty Years I read over 82 pages… the writing was that engaging. If you want the definitive history of Porsche, or a great a great gift for your Porsche nut, I can highly recommend this book as a great addition to your library! Cost $60.00.

This past weekend was my second trip to Laguna Seca and it was wonderful!

Upon getting to our hotel at Casa Munros in Monterey, the first guest we encountered was Johannes Von Over-beek, one of the Flying Lizard 911 GT3 drivers, his boss and fellow Lizard

team mate Seth Neiman were staying in the room next to mine. I had a chance to say hello to Jorg Bergmiester leaving the hotel early Saturday morning for the track. The weather was perfect at the track, much warmer than last year I am told. After Saturdays racing, my friends David and Sean and I went to a restaurant for a late diner on Cannery row, the place was fairly empty with the exception of the team Penske, Por-sche RS Spyder LMP2 team, who were having there end of season party. I had a chance there at the restaurant to talk for a while with the driver of Penske’s #7 car, Romain Dumas, a very nice guy and one of the best drivers on Team Penske, he described to me a bit of what the race had been like for him that day. The next morning Dave, Sean & I drove down beautiful Hwy 1 through Big Sur and made our way back to my

home in Valencia, CA in north L.A. County.

I hope that next August I will be able to attend the Monterey Historics ‘09 race at Laguna Seca where Porsche

Q Boxster (986 And 987) Child Safety Seat: Is it true that the

passenger side air bags in the Boxster can only be deactivated with the pur-chase of the Porsche child car seat? We recently had a child and I am looking forward to taking him for some nice drives, however I was dismayed to hear that the only way I can bring him in the car is to purchase a -$500 car seat from Porsche. I did a great deal of research on the infant car seat before we selected one for my wife’s car. I would like to use that same seat in my Boxster but need to deactivate the air bags first.

A Unfortunately, you cannot deactivate the

air bags without using the fac-tory seat. There is a deactiva-tion bar that is installed that has a buckle receiver and the seat has a buckle on it. So that when you install the seat and buckle it up, the airbag control unit sees that a child seat is installed and turns off the front and side air bags on the passenger side. - Peter Smith, PCA Website.

Q 934/993/996/C2/C4 - DIY Pro-ject? Is replacing the polyrib belt

and the plugs a DIY for the home me-chanic? Should I subscribe to www.AllData.com? I found someone on the net who sells the Service Manual on a CD for $185.00. Is that good? Will it have what I want like changing the belt, plugs, etc.? What about these other services?

A AllData is really good, what you get there for $20 or $30 is

astounding. I was really skeptical so I tried it for a few models, and I have to say I highly recommend their service. At first I thought you’d have to spend $200-$300 to get what you need, but that is not the case. The factory work-shop manual would be a great addition,

but what is available on the internet is usually stolen property of Porsche. I would be careful with that stuff.

Given your choices I would take AllData, and check-out the website www.p-car.com - they have dozens of illustrated DIY procedures for later 911 models such as your 996. - Joel Reiser, PCA Website.

Q 951 - ‘S’ Model VIN Number. I am considering the purchase of a

1988 951 Turbo S and wanted to know if there is an online source where I could research the car’s VIN # to verify if it is indeed an “S” model and to de-termine what options and other specifi-cations the car had when it left the fac-tory.

A Yes, there’s a pretty good, al-beit non-factory, source of in-

formation on the Turbo S models: htto://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/4786/. You’ll find information on engine numbers (the best way to deter-mine if the engine was originally con-figured as a “S”) and additional infor-mation on the list of items included as standard equipment. - Bill Burris, PCA Website.

Q 924/944/968 - 1987 944S Floor Jack Stands. I am preparing to

undertake some work to the brakes and more than likely CV joint(s) due to clicking when turning left at low speeds. I have the shop manuals, the Haynes manual and plenty of tools. My concern is that there is very little good information on the placement of jack

stands and the use of a floor jack. I’ve seen conflicting information about jacking from under the transmission housing and placement of jack stands. I would hate to cause damage while trying to make repairs.

A Your best reference material you have at

your fingertips is located in your glove box. The Owner’s Manual outlines the only ap-proved procedures for lifting your car safely. The reason why you’re getting conflicting information about jacking the car from under the transmis-

sion is because it isn’t recommended. The diagram in the manual is pretty good... take a look and see if that helps determine exactly where the jack stands should be positioned. - Bill Burris, PCA Website.

Q 911 (‘78 SC.’89 Carrera) - Re-viving A Car After 15 Years. I

have a 1980 911 SC that has not been run for the last 15 years. It sat in a ga-rage under a car cover for this period of time. I want to get the car running again and I am wondering if you can give some advice as to how to go about it. Obviously, the gas has gone bad and will need to be removed from the tank and fuel lines. What else would you recommend before starting the car for the first time? The car was running well 15 years ago, but was run infrequently at that time and produced blue smoke

from the exhaust on start up. There were no mechanical problems with the car that I know of at the time it was last run.

A I would continue to follow the thought process of flushing sys-

tems. Flush the oil and change the fil-ter. Flush the brake system and even collapse the pistons into the calipers and bleed them off again. Flush the entire fuel system, lines, head, injec-tors, WUR. Check all suspension points for cracking or worse. Also check all the brake lines as well. These have a tendency to burst after sitting for many years. Anything that is a rubber line such as oil lines should be carefully checked.

Once this is all done I would fire it up and reset the CO after the engine is warmed up, check the timing and blow some of the cob webs out of it. - Stephen Kaspar, PCA Website.

A nice clean Porsche is the reward for en-tering the Concours.

After visiting the El Santuario de Chi-mayo Shrine we headed down the road a few miles to another, believe or not, Mexican restaurant for lunch. After lunch we had a stop at one of the local weavers for a weaving demonstration. On our way back to the motel we trav-eled through some more small towns and over one stretch of narrow but great Porsche roads. As we drove through a small town, if you picture about twenty Porsches in a row, we spotted a dog just sitting by the road very intently turning his head and watching every car as it passed! At the next stop everyone was making com-ments about how the dog was so inter-ested in all of the Porsches going by.

At the Saturday night Banquet we were all honored by the presence of Vic Elford, a very well known race car driver from days gone by. He told many us about many interesting races he had been in and a lot about his ex-periences with Porsches.

The time we spent in Albuquerque and all of the surrounding areas was absolutely great and the Road Runner Region did an awesome job of hosting the entire event.

It will be a real thrill to see those cars competing at speed again, much better than seeing them in a museum! Going to Monterey, seeing the cars, and meet-ing the factory Porsche drivers made me feel like a little kid again!
