other Azure Week live events when they come out? Answer: Yes!!! All of our live events are recorded and posted to the MicrosoftVirtualAcademy.com site about 2

weeks after the event. Check out the site now, there may be some existing ones that you are interested in.

08:58:12 PST Question: @Kristen What holidays are in February?

Answer: The ones my family is really late in celebrating Christmas in this case...ho ho ho!

09:01:27 PST Question: And, a link to the join event, too. That would be helpful. Question: media services reserved units look

billable by the day, but ScottGu says by the minute. Clarify? Answer: Great question Pete, usage of media services is different than VMs & websites hence its different billing

model. Please refer - http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/pricing/details/media-services/

09:03:20 PST Question: The MVA voucher code does not seem to work. I entered WinAzlaaS and got invalid code. Answer: Hmmm, it worked for me. Please send email to [email protected] and we'll take a look.

09:05:51 PST Question: With Azure can we do VDI Setups.... Answer: to a degree...using Remote Desktop Services in Server 2012 with all of the desktop features enabled it will

look and feel like a Win8 desktop. We do not support desktop OSes in Azure at this time though.

09:06:05 PST Question: Saying the event will begin now for a few minutes now. More technical difficulties or do I need to do

something? Answer: It has started now, enjoy!

09:12:20 PST Question: As understand it you pay for the machine, processors, memory, storage and operating system on a per

hour basis. Is there any Windows role or feature in the Windows 2012 R2 image you turn on that is not covered by the per hour charge and if you turn on these extra cost/license features do you get a message saying you need a separate license for this feature? Answer: Actually, IaaS (virtual machines in Azure) are billed on a per-minute basis, not an hour basis. Whatever you

put into that VM and run will be covered by that charge.

09:26:18 PST Question: Are todays slides available for download? Answer: They are working on posting them and one of us will update the Q&A when they are available.

09:28:10 PST Question: RDP = Remote DesktoP ? Answer: yes, Remote Desktop Protocol

09:28:43 PST Question: who is responsible for patching, backup, antivirus and monitoring for iaas virtual machines? Answer: Microsoft patches are applied to machines that reside in Availability Sets, and you can see the Update

Domain they belong to in the portal. As for AV, that kind of thing is up to the administrator.

09:33:51 PST Question: @TommyPatterson: are patches applied to IaaS VM or just PaaS VM? Answer: PaaS VM patching is taken care by Microsoft, IaaS profides just infra so you put OS & later own the

patching

09:34:08 PST Question: @TommyPatterson: are patches applied to IaaS VM or just PaaS VM? Answer: Both. IAAS VMs have to be in an availability set though so as to insure uptime. At least that is my

knowledge of how it works. I receive emails notifying me of patching to the system from time to time.

09:36:20 PST Question: Is Visual Studio Online integrated with TFS.VisualStudio.com and does it use the same authentication and

billing? Answer: Check out this video, it talks through some of these aspects. Im not into the pricing side, so not sure on that

piece. http://aka.ms/politicaltracker

09:39:00 PST Question: for every server in the enterprise we provide patching (wsus), monitoring (scom), backup (avamar) and

anti-virus (sep). if we are using azure iaas do we still need to provide these services? Answer: Absolutely, consider VMs on Azure IaaS as an extension of your datacenter

09:39:54 PST Question: Is there a GUI approach for changing the Virtual Network for a VM in Azure after the creation without the

deletion of the VM only and not the disk? Answer: Hey Adnan, thanks for all you are doing in FL with my peer Blain! As far as I have found there is no GUI

method for changing the network once the VM has been created. I am hoping for this to be improved in the future but unfortunately I do not have access to the roadmap for this feature.

09:40:45 PST Question: how is OS licensing handled? If I create a bunch of VMs in Azure and move them locally, what happens to

the OS license? Answer: You must provide the licensing proof for these now local VMs as Azure per minute billing includes the

license, but once they are in use outside Azure, it is up to the admin to provide a valid license.

09:41:00 PST Question: Can the VMs in azure be accessed via a public IP? Answer: Yes via endpoints. He is talking about this now.

09:41:43 PST Question: If you use App Controller to create a new VM on Azure, you can enter Administrator or Admin as a

username and you will not get a warning. At the end of the wizard however you will receive an error message and you will have to start the wizard all over; all previously entered information is gone. Be aware of this if you are using System Center! Answer: thanks Arie! My hunch is that this will be addressed in a future patch.

09:42:09 PST Question: I know its been requested many times, but are there plans to offer multiple site to site connections to

VMs? Answer: At this time we only support single Site2Site connection to you Virtual network.

09:42:53 PST Question: Will it be possible to have a timer on the servers? like 08:00 to 16:00 and other times it offline? Answer: Nothing automatically - but you could schedule it with on-prem services like Orchestrator and the like.

09:43:39 PST Question: Kudos to the hosts for today session. I can't recall having so much fun on a technical presentation as they

are giving. Answer: Thanks for the feedback!

09:43:57 PST Question: Will MPLS in Azure be avaible in Europe Answer: We are not allowed to comment on futures on these webcasts Im afraid. I have not seen any public traffic

on this front lately though, so we'll have to wait and see where this goes.

09:47:57 PST Question: Hi Rick! Didn't realise you were here. I keep hoping there will be multi site support, as we could move a lot

of our stuff to Azure then. Answer: Nice to see ya again Curt. Site2Site is one of the most requested resources.

09:48:43 PST Question: So the VM Name must be unique within the Azure infrastructure environment? Answer: No, only the cloud service name must be unique, the actual VM name can be whatever you like. Note, the

cloud service does not come into play if you have no endpoints open to talk to the VM.

09:49:39 PST Question: What if you turn the vm off will you keep the ip address Answer: IP address is recycled.

09:51:35 PST Question: I think it's interesting that MS have chosen to stick with private IPv4 address assignment, with a 30 year

lifetime and have not taken the leap forward to IPv6 in Azure Answer: Internal IP v4 addresses are Nat'ed to public addresses. It's private internal range that is familiar for

customers. because it's NAT'ed, no issue with depletion.

09:53:41 PST Question: Thanks @Tommy. Just trying to figure out how to setup the infrastructure so that DNS is not an issue

given that the public name has to be unique. Answer: You can apply your own domain names to services in Azure, as long as you are the owner of the domain.

This is done by making an A record on your DNS parent for the domain. I have virtuallycloud9.com configured and running in Azure. So it will have two names, the normal cloudapp.net and my own. Basically, once you know the public IP address you can make a DNS pointer to this address.

09:54:34 PST Question: Be aware that if you do not enter a public port, one is dynamically generated for you. As a security

precaution, remove all endpoints if you do not specifically require them. Answer: Great point Arie! Also the RSH port is standard as it requires certificates as the method of security, though it

can be configured as a different port as well.

09:57:24 PST Question: Can i install terminal services on IaaS VM? Do i need RDP CALs for users? Answer: You can do RDS, it requires special llicensing. See this blog post concerning the licensing and setup.

09:57:49 PST Question: The ports that are shown are created on the firewall of the cloud service right? not on the VM itself. Answer: Correct on the cloud service.

09:58:30 PST Question: Port is well know for PS too... why just RDP auto? Answer: Because the remote shell requires the certificate to communicate properly, whereas RDP does not.

09:58:37 PST Question: Wouldn't that be same for PowerShell port then!? Answer: Because the remote shell requires the certificate to communicate properly, whereas RDP does not.

09:59:32 PST Question: What happens if I get an issue that prevents the VM to initialize. How can I get access to safe mode or VM

console instead of RDP? Answer: Only RDP and Powershell are allowed at this time.

10:00:46 PST Question: The cloud service does provide the public DNS name for that machine. Right? If so, when is that unique

name released? Answer: Do you mean when is it released fi the cloud service is deleted? Clean up routines run to perform this type

of cleanup in DNS, however I do not know how often they are run, sorry. If this wasn't your question let us know, I took a swag at it.

10:01:42 PST Question: Cloud Service names are global? Is that not going to become limiting with more and more uptake and

usage? Or can you map to your own domain names rather than using cloudapp.net? Answer: If you own the domain name, there is nothing to stop you from creating A records that point to the IP

address or a cname to point to the cloudapp.net address.

10:02:21 PST Question: Where can I find information that clarifies when should I create a Cloud Service in the portal? Answer: Hey, you can refer to - http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/services/cloud-services/

10:03:24 PST Question: Tommy... just took a quick glance at your Azure site and it looks like it's got some interesting articles, info,

labs ... thx Answer: Awesome, check out my new video I made with PoliticalTracker when you get a chance. One is a funny

digital short, the other is a full interview with them on how they use Azure and more. http://aka.ms/twodoors and http://aka.ms/politcaltracker

10:04:08 PST Question:

> Quoted answer: Only RDP and Powershell are allowed at this time. I have a lot of endpoints for other ports Answer: I meant as a method for connecting to the "console" sorry. Yes many endpoints for other services and such

are allowed and recommended! Thanks for keeping it straight TomD!

10:04:44 PST Question: I cannot open up other ports to public? only PS and RDS ports? Answer: I meant these are the only ones opened by default. yes, you can open more as needed for various

services...

10:07:32 PST Question: Can Linux be run in Azure VMs? Answer: Yes, Ubuntu, CentOS per example

10:07:40 PST Question: @Tommy the link doesn't work.. Answer: Added a new link...fat fingered the last one sorry!

10:07:52 PST Question: Second link doesn't work... Answer: Added proper one...sorry bout that!

10:11:11 PST Question: Is anyone else having issues with the live feed? They started cutting out about 30 minutes ago and I still

can't get it to load. The Q&A feed is still working and the Polls, but not the feed. Answer: I had to do a CTRL F5 on my end at one point.

11:13:21 PST Question: To make my question more clear, consider two VMs, one "Running" and one "Shutdown". When you start

the VMs, do they restart in their previous state? Answer: When you shut them down in IaaS they save current data and such so booting them would be like any

every day server you would build physical or virtual. In PaaS these are more static worker VMs that reset to their original config at every start up

11:18:39 PST Question: Can you create a set of VHDs that are shared by a group of VMs for daily backups? Answer: Only through storage spaces on a single server, then shared via SMB3 would this work. This is quite fast

and usually suffices. Really depends on the environment and such though.

11:19:34 PST Question: what is a Affinity Group for a Storage Account? Answer: The affinity group basically says run all of my resources as close together as possible without running on

the same hardware. So for instance create storage, network, and VMs in the same datacenter but not in the same rack.

11:20:33 PST Question: Thanks for the great content. As HA/fault tolerance is a primary concern for our clients, is there a Best

Practice doc/link that outlines these recommendations? Answer: Good question! See here: Windows Azure Business Continuity Technical Guidance :

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/hh873027.aspx.

11:22:06 PST Question: Can we restart a deallocated VMs? Do we regain the IP address if it is not released? and are the content

of the VM persisted even if it is deallocated? When do we choose between deallocation of VMs and stopping a VM? Answer: Deallocated VMs will boot up basically as if they were shutdown. Only difference is billing. Deallocated

means no billing incurring. The IP will remain the same as long as the VM is still present. If the VM were to be deleted and re-added you would then be given a new IP address most likely if other VMs were placed in service during the removed time.

11:22:48 PST Question: Are the Azure VM images much like Parallels VM images? Answer: Images are basically template machines if you are famililar with Hyper-V or VMware. Machines that have

been sysprepped and ready to deploy with new SIDs, etc.

11:23:56 PST Question: But if you deallocate the data are lost? Answer: No. Data remains until you delete the VHD.

11:30:58 PST Question: IP address in Azure are DHCP Allocated and not static for VMS , the IP address will stay with the VM as

long as its not deallocated Answer: Correct, and deallocated will retain the same IP as long as new VMs have not come online in between.

11:31:58 PST Question: How do I generate an image from an existing VM in Azure? Answer: At the bottom of the screen click the Capture button. Must be sysprepped first.

11:37:00 PST Question: can i edit (resize) vhds? Answer: VHDX offers online resize (while it's running), but VHDX is not yet supported in Azure. After some research

I found someone who created a third party tool to resize a VHD: http://blog.maartenballiauw.be/post/2013/01/07/Tales-from-the-trenches-resizing-a-Windows-Azure-virtual-disk-the-smooth-way.aspx. He also explains the steps how to do it.

11:37:23 PST Question: I'm sorry, I don't know if this was answered before, but can you tie a single VHD to multiple VMs Answer: No, unless you create the VHD on one of your VMs and share it out that way.

11:40:05 PST Question: When will Azure support VHDX? Answer: That's is not yet been announced. As far as I know the Azure team is looking into to in, but had not

committed to a date.

11:43:17 PST Question: How is the I/O performance of the d-drive compared to c-drive? How is putting the system %TEMP% to d-

drive? Answer: The C drive has cache enabled so is faster for certain applications. The D drive is created by the admin,

choose cache or no cache. Depends on the application requirements. Like don't cache a SQL database drive...etc

11:47:28 PST Question: can use some feature of Azure portal for $200 Answer: Correct. Just sign up for the free trial with the same ID. You receive free compute time.

11:54:33 PST Question: I was said that it will not require Payment information Answer: You need a credit card for verification purposes only, you will not be charged unless you convert your

account at the end of the trial.

11:57:48 PST Question: @Tommy it would be nice if there were better cost calculators. My trial expired before I could test, and

now I am afraid of creating anything.. They need to give us a -whatif option. Answer: The calculator lets you choose any of the options. Not sure what you mean by better, here sorry. For

instance you create 2 VMs Small Size, that will equate to X amount per month. The calculator does that for you. Its pretty accurate.

12:01:41 PST Question: @Tommy Patterson: It would be great to have a web-service to get the current values from the cost-

calculator, or an connected Excel Sheet, instead of having to copy all the values from the online-calculator. Especially for startups that would be a great option. Answer: Good idea. Will see if the product team gets that feedback. Thanks!

12:02:25 PST Question: is there a reason the last two webinars the codes don't work for the classes that we have watched.. do you

know what's going on mon and tues the coders worked yesterday and today the MVA codes don't work is there a reason for this ....????? i have not received an answer for this question?? are these live webinars now NOT for credit?? Shannon [Event Support] replied publicly: Hi Kevin, The voucher codes from yesterday and today are valid and

redeemable. The code from yesterday is BldAzApp and the one for today is listed in the FAQ. Please try to redeem again.

12:03:01 PST Question: Can you assign a public IP address to a VM or to a cluster of load-balanced VMs and then configure that

IP address as an A DNS entry in an non-clouapp.net domain)? If so, how? Answer: The public IP is assigned for you, you cannot publicly assign your own IPs at this time. As for the DNS

records though, yes you could create your own DNS pointers to this IP. This would work the same for VMs, clusters, or availability sets.

12:04:03 PST Question: Right, but the calculator assumes you understand your goals before you start. If I want to try building

some servers, I don't always make the correct decisions, and won't know the costs until the bill comes. Answer: I like to play with the numbers in the calculator before designing just to get a sense of it. Can you provide an

example of what you are attempting to build out?

12:04:14 PST Question: Thanks Tommy Answer: you bet!

12:07:28 PST Question: Thanks Tommy for your response about the public IP. But since you mentioned IP addresses in Az are

DHCP-allocated, does this mean the public IP cannot be static? From what you wrote, I do infer that the public IP address IS static indeed, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for the clarification! Answer: the public IP is static. The private IP is DHCP "Sticky".

12:15:10 PST Question: What is the fastest way to upload some files to VM. We have NT services and some dependent files that

need to be uploaded to setup our (6 GB) APP . Answer: Best way would be to use a cloud explorer app to a blob, then pull the files over to correct server. Or use an

FTP client in an Azure VM to pull the files up possibly? Just some quick thoughts.

12:26:46 PST Question: what devices are they sitting in front of? Answer: Planar 2785 Monitors connect to laptops

12:40:49 PST Question: Can we capture a physical machine configured, and load as a vhd ? Answer: Yes using an image tool that outputs to VHD would work. Provided the OS is supported

12:41:16 PST Question: Anyone know bizspark allotment for trial? I think its different than MSDN. Answer: $200 first month, $150 thereafter.

12:49:02 PST Question: I understand that the actual VMs incur a Compute cost, but what else incurs a charge? Where can I find

information on what all actually costs money in Azure? Answer: The calculator shows everything. Disk I/O, network download but not upload. Speaking of VMs specifically

here. GEO replication has an added cost. That is storage account based though.

12:50:02 PST Question: "Yes using an image tool that outputs to VHD would work" Is there a name for this tool? Answer: There are several out there. Oh you found one I think.

12:51:21 PST Question: > Quoted question: "Yes using an image tool that outputs to VHD would work" Is there a name for this tool? > Quoted answer: There are several out there. Oh you found one I think. Answer: Disk2VHD: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415

13:29:37 PST Question: Do you have an example of creating and configuring DNS in Azure on a Azure VM? Answer: Our webinar series on my blog (http://www.virtuallycloud9.com/index.php/2013/10/microsoft-cloud-learn-it-

now-boost-your-career-virtual-machines-step-by-step-guide/) builds out a DNS server since we install AD at the same time. You could view it to see how it works. We also have some more advanced guides for this on http://aka.ms/earlyexpert

13:33:43 PST Question:

> Quoted question: How much stuff (GB) can I save in an Azure VM for 100$ a month ? Guido van Brakel replied privately: You can calculate the using the Azure pricing calculator: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/pricing/calculator Answer: According to the calculator 1450 GBs is roughly $99.37 a month. Use the full calculator on the right hand

side.

13:34:19 PST Question: Where is this configuration file stored? Is it on every VM? Answer: It is per account. You download the config file for the entire account.

13:37:20 PST Question: is it planned to offer in Azure Windows Failover Gust Cluster, and when? Answer: Technically you can do this now, see this thread:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14776.how-to-configure-windows-failover-cluster-in-windows-azure-for-alwayson-availability-groups.aspx

13:37:52 PST Question: Two DNS server host names with same IP address? Answer: The cloud service has the unique IP. The two DNS servers behind the service have their own private unique

IPs.

private unique IPs. How does that relate to VNet? I didn't really understand her explanation there. Answer: There is some confusion here, the same IP address they spoke of was the cloud service public IP address,

not the internal private network address. So the Vnets I think of them as private networks(not public, not visible to the public) so two DNS servers one has 192.168.1.10 the other has 192.168.1.11 and they sit in an availability set which has a cloud service in front if them that has one unique IP address which is public. Make sense?

13:41:52 PST Question: > Quoted answer: According to the calculator 1450 GBs is roughly $99.37 a month. Use the full calculator on the right

hand side. Thanks Does this mean i can create a 1,4 TB VHD for the money or does it only charge me for the effective data thats on the vhd? (dynamic vhd?) Answer: You only pay for what you use. All disks start off thin.

13:43:18 PST Question: I have created multiple VMs in a VNET but cannot ping/resolve the internal address between the

machines without a hosts file. With hosts file things work. Something to help resolve this? Answer: Add DNS service to one of the VMs, and add the records there. In your Vnet, point to your DNS IP Address.

Check out this walkthrough video later, its soup to nuts on networking VMs together. http://www.virtuallycloud9.com/index.php/2013/10/microsoft-cloud-learn-it-now-boost-your-career-virtual-machines-step-by-step-guide/

13:43:35 PST Question: Cheryl keeps specifying DNS servers but skipping the creating of DNS servers. Is there a session on

actually creating the DNS server and making it work? Answer: Check out this blog post. http://www.virtuallycloud9.com/index.php/2013/10/microsoft-cloud-learn-it-now-

13:46:36 PST Question: how to create vm1 in one dataenter and vm2 in another datacenter but both the vms are in the same

region. If yes, then how shall i know that these vms are in different datacenter? Answer: Bottomline is you would have to trust us. We do not actually show which physical location each VM resides

in. The govt and many large organizations have tested this, and we guarantee that services are separated, because downtime for you means downtime for us, and reporting downtime for any cloud solution is a killer. See recent

headlines for the G company.

13:47:59 PST Question: In the transcript to the Q&A, will the targets of all these links be exposed? Answer: Yes all of the links are published as well

13:48:39 PST Question: Does the traffic manager name matter? Did you just make it match your cloud service name for grins, or

does it need to match something? Answer: Just makes things simpler on the admin.

13:49:54 PST Question: So if I ised Azure VM for dev/test server that needs to connect to a dev/test SQL server on my local

network, how is that accomplished? Answer: Setup a site to site VPN between the azure vnet and your onpremise infrastructure. For instance, here is a

guide: http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2013/05/10/step-by-step-extend-your-private-cloud-with-windows-azure-virtual-networks.aspx#.Uuq7GYt8OM8

13:51:45 PST Question: AlwaysOn Setting offered on Azure, do not use share disks..so the question is if there will be ability to

have Failover Cluster with shared disks Answer: Not at this time

13:52:42 PST Question: This may have been answered already but If you use your own DNS and Azure is assigning IP address

dynamically to your VMs, does the Azure DHCP register the records in your DNS for you? Answer: No, the DNS provided is a public facing DNS only. If you point to an internal DNS, you will need to have the

servers configured to update their records on the domain as you would on-premise.

13:53:00 PST Question: why would you use the same IP for your DNS server? Answer: See my other response to the group. Cleears up things hopefully.

13:53:57 PST Question: With Azure Name resolution can one machine see another machine using \hostname? Can you see the

machine in the windows browser network tab? Answer: Yes, as long as you turn on the normal network browsing features. If I remember right, this may be turned

off by default in 2012 R2 image.

13:54:15 PST Question: can you recommend a free BYODNS? Answer: Sorry not allowed to promote other vendors and such on these forums.

13:54:52 PST Question: This is getting very confusing without diagrams or concrete examples... Answer: Check out my walk through guide here, it might clear up some of this.

14:09:27 PST Question: In case of volumetric DDoS attack on my cloud service (web app), would Azure DDoS system recognize

the attacker's traffic and divert it to another service (like an honeypot)? Would it be done with traffic manager? Answer: Windows Azure has a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) defense system that helps prevent attacks

against Windows Azure platform services. It uses standard detection and mitigation techniques such as SYN cookies, rate limiting, and connection limits. Windows Azure’s DDoS defense system is designed not only to withstand attacks from the outside, but also from within. • For attacks launched from the outside (Internet), IP addresses can be spoofed, although they are prevented from spoofing Windows Azure datacenter IP address ranges. • For attacks launched from within a tenant, trusted packet filters prevent impersonation (spoofing) of Windows Azure IP addresses inside the Windows Azure datacenter. • Windows Azure monitors and detects internally initiated DDoS attacks and removes offending VMs from the network.

Windows Azure’s DDoS protection also benefits applications. However, it is still possible for applications to be targeted individually. As a result, customers should actively monitor their Windows Azure applications. For more information, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg433048.aspx • Proxy devices (such as web application firewalls) that terminate and then forward traffic to endpoints can run in a virtual machine, and provide protection against an even broader range of DoS and other attacks (e.g. low-rate, HTTP, and application-layer threats). • Some virtualized solutions available are also capable of both intrusion detection and prevention. • You can also deploy more instances of your application to handle the potentially higher load generated by an attack. For more information on these techniques, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/dn251004.aspx If a customer notices their application is under attack, they should contact Windows Azure Customer Support to receive assistance. Windows Azure Customer Support personnel are trained to react promptly to these types of requests: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/support/contact/

14:35:09 PST Question: where can I monitor the status of the site-to-site VPN? Answer: once it is connected, it will light up green in the portal, if its down or has issues then it displays it there as

well. in the virtual network area.

14:41:26 PST Question: hi Tommy I know. But it is "connecting". I need to know what is the problema. How can I troubleshoot it? Answer: Need to follow the guide verbatim. Depends on end device and such. Hard to determine in Q&A chat really.

Keith's blog post does a great job of explaining all of the sections for this.

14:54:45 PST Question: final module is AD, right? Answer: Yes

15:08:09 PST Question: ?? I'm meaning Windows Azure AD as opposed to AD in a VM Answer: Tom we aren't allowed to talk about futures, sorry.

15:08:34 PST Question: Azure Active Directory only allows for identity authentication. Is this correct? Will it ever be more than

that? Answer: Sorry this would be a future, and we aren't allowed to discuss those.

15:20:59 PST Question: Given that VHDs must be fixed sized, and more GB = more cost, can a data VHD be expanded in size on

request? Can the VM stay up during such a resize? Answer: Would suggest using storage pools in server 2012, add more VHDs as you see fit. No worries.

15:21:21 PST Question: A 1TB fixed vhd file, with very little data actually stored in it, how much does count for Storage Account

billing? Answer: They are thin disks, you only pay for what you actually put in them.

15:25:19 PST Question: You are only charged for used space of a fixed disk, it was mentioned during other Azure training Answer: Correct

15:26:15 PST Question: Can somebody please confirm that it is possible to disconnect a 'Disk' from one VM and attach it to

another VM. (I'm thinking migration scenarios) Answer: Yep, easy to do. Detach and attach, no worries.

right Vnet. And JuanPablo, there are only a few of us answering chat right now sorry for the delay on getting to your

questions.

15:29:59 PST Question: Will we se a complete sample how to add a new virtual machine to a domain and subnet via PowerShell? Answer: Check out Yung Chou's blog. He's got some great powershell stuff on there around this.

15:30:18 PST Question: Are VHDX files supported? Answer: Not at this time, only VHD.

15:31:38 PST Question: Can you prepare a whole AD-based infra (AD+SQL+Web Servers) in local Hyper-V and then upload it to

Azure using Add-AzureVHD (and then set up/fix the networking wiring if necessary in the Management Portal)? Answer: Yes! Just add the VMs once you've uploaded the disks and select the proper vnet.

15:32:01 PST Question: Any (approximate) ETA on VHDX support? 1 month? 6? 12? We are pure Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V here. Answer: Sorry nothing has been made public on this yet.

15:38:42 PST Question: A general question about management in Azure. If I have several different teams or departments using

Azure services, how do I design our Azure setup so that I can identify the appropriate costs for each group? Answer: This would need to be done with System Center agents right now. There is no chargeback system like this

in Azure yet.

16:05:07 PST Question: > Quoted question: Do we have to sysprep the hyper-v vhd before moving it to Azure? Christopher Chapman replied privately: No this does not need to be done. Answer: You do not run hyper-v servers in Azure
