History of Windsor CastleWindsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1089. He built a mote and

bailey castle. In the 14th Century, the castle had some more towers added to it, before the Victorians put some gothic buildings into the castle like St

George’s Chapel.In 1992, their was a fire which damaged

some of the rooms in the castle. Today, the castle is home to the Royal Family, The

Queen and Prince Phillip.

The Castle & GardensMiddle Ward

At the heart of Windsor Castle is the Middle Ward, a bailey formed around the motte or artificial hill in the centre of the ward. The motte is 50 ft (15 m) high and is made from chalk originally excavated from the surrounding ditch. The keep, called the Round Tower, on the top of the motte is based on an original

12th-century building, extended upwards in the early 19th century under architect Jeffry Wyattville by 30 ft (9 m) to produce a more imposing height and

silhouette.[9] The interior of the Round Tower was further redesigned in 1991–3 to provide additional space for the Royal Archives, an additional room being built in the space left by Wyattville's originally hollow extension.[9] The Round Tower is in reality far from cylindrical, due to the shape and structure of the motte beneath it. The current height of the tower has been criticised as being disproportionate to its width; archaeologist Tim Tatton-Brown, for example, has described it as a

mutilation of the earlier medieval structure.[10]

The western entrance to the Middle Ward is now open, and a gateway leads north from the ward onto the North Terrace.[11] The eastern exit from the ward is guarded by the Norman Gatehouse.[11] This gatehouse, which in fact dates from

the 14th century, is heavily vaulted and decorated with carvings, including surviving medieval lion masks, traditional symbols of majesty, to form an

impressive entrance to the Upper Ward.[12] Wyattville redesigned the exterior of the gatehouse, and the interior was later heavily converted in the 19th century

for residential use.[13]

Gardens of the CastleAs Windsor Castle is on a steep hill,

there is not enough room for the Garden to fit in. So the Upper Ward has

the Garden. There is also a lot of parkland which

supplies students from St George’s and Eton to go sing at St George’s Chapel.

St George’s ChapelSt George’s Chapel is a central part of Windsor Castle because many services are held every Sunday of the year here. Their has been many burials here like Charles I, Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, who he loved. There is also burials for the Royal Family like George VI and The Queen Mother

Timeline of events at Windsor•1070's -The history of Windsor Castle began shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. William the Conqueror orders a wooden fort built at Windsor to guard against western approaches to London.•1312-11-13 King Edward III born at Windsor Castle. He became known as Edward Windsor.•1475 -Construction of St George's Chapel is undertaken by King Edward IV.•English Civil War, 1642 - 1645, 1648 - 1649 Windsor Castle captured by Oliver Cromwell's parliamentarians. King Charles I is tried and found guilty of high treason. He was held prisoner in the castle before being executed.•1660 The Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 was period of restoration also of Windsor Castle. Refurbishment was carried out by King Charles II.•1824 - 1836 Parliament approves £300,000 for major restoration work to the castle. Extensive work was undertaken including to the Round Tower, private apartments and to the South Wing.•Victorian Era, 1837 - 1901 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (d. 1861) establish Windsor Castle as their main residence.•1845 The State Apartments are opened to the public.•WW2, 1939 - 1945 During the Second World war Windsor Castle was home to the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, their parents, George VI and Elizabeth remaining in London to inspire, and boost the morale of, the country.•1992-11-20 Major damage afflicts Windsor Castle after a 15 hour blaze destroys up to a fifth of the floor space.
