december 2016 THE WINDWARD OWASCO YACHT CLUB Hello all: I survived my 1 st year as Swimming Director and was only successful because of Ellen Co(er, Tyler Mason and the lifeguard staff. Ellen provided me with an excellent document that explained everything that needed to be done to prepare for the season, hire lifeguards, daily opera?ons and closing up shop. Thank you so much!! Tyler, our head lifeguard, took charge of scheduling, managing the staff and even rescued a seagull that was struggling on our beach. He also worked with the lifeguards to resurrect the “Sleepless-over” where about 13 teens spent a fun filled night at the club. Finally the lifeguards! We had absolutely no personnel issues. This group not only showed up for work, they all worked together great, and did an excellent job. I was happy to them engaging with the club members, young and young heart. I hope they are all able to come back next year. --Theresa Mason W I N D W A R D Fall Cleanup Great turnout and a cookout on October 15 for all who helped! Many hands made light work. Page 3 Waterfront & Grounds Boat update, wish list, and channel your inner grill master next summer! Pages 4 & 5 COMMODORE’S LETTER I hope everyone has enjoyed the mild fall. We sure were blessed with some beau?ful fall sunsets and moon risings. The “super moon” sure was something to witness. As winter approaches, The Club is well prepared. The water is off, the leaves raked, and everything is put away. It is the ?me of year to reflect on the good ?mes we spent together at The Club. Whether you enjoy just the quiet nights at The Club or the social gatherings that are offered, I hope we had it for you. If you have an idea for a gathering that you would enjoy go to the website and click contact us, you can then give your sugges?on and the social director will take it into considera?on. I would also like to ask that you consider serving your Club. At the annual mee?ng, elec?ons were held for Commodore, Secretary, and Treasurer, which are one and two year terms. The current officers would like to begin training others who would like to serve. It is never too early to begin working together. Again, visit the website and click contact us, shoot an email sta?ng your interest and we will get in touch. Next year The Club will be celebra?ng 125 years!!!! At the annual mee?ng Bill Whi?ng was able to share photos and some of the history of The Club. The history and the transforma?on are very interes?ng to hear. This will be available on the website so please take some ?me to listen to some of your Club’s history. Enjoy the holidays with your families. See you soon!! --Beth Butera

OYC WINDWARD

SOCIAL NOTES: WONDERFUL SUMMER, MORE FUN AHEAD! Our beautiful Summer has left us followed by some equally delightful Fall days. PERFECT, we say until that early snow starts to fly right after a 70 degree sunny day. If you can get down to the Club, do so,as we are members all year round and you are welcome to use it. Water is turned off so don't flush but lav keys and Club House keys are available; check with the Commodore. I will start with social activities in the Spring as soon as weather warrants and there is member interest. Last season we “soft” opened on Memorial Day Weekend with two successful events, a dish to pass fire pit party and the Commodore's Meet and Greet. The night before our official opening we had an ice cream social with my,son Michael entertaining and leading us in several sing-a-longs. If you have any other ideas for pre-opening parties or events let me know. That goes for anything you would like to help host or participate in for our 125 ANNIVERSARY YEAR.

We have a committee working diligently on our 125th

celebration, headed by Marcus Wilson. I know there are many sub committees that might interest you. We promise fun meetings that won't be long. Please try to “Step Up for Your Club” this very special season. Anne Marie Purdy is doing just that by contacting some of her raft gang that hung out together when they were “Club Kids”...they are now in late 20's and early 30's. They are going to have a “Sleepless Over” this summer to help

celebrate our 125th

. You can contact Anne Marie through her parents, Bruce and Nancy at, [email protected].

A family who has hosted 2 very successful events are the Abdelaziz's . They gave us a fantastic Halloween party, and last season’s Family Olympics. Auntie and Grandparents are also the best of helpers and participants . This year they have planned a spectacular Pirate Party. Perhaps your family would like to help with that?. Their e-mail is: [email protected] these people know that you will be available after you read this so you won't forget. You might have a great idea for an event or a band. Anyone interested in helping me get together a Club Talent Show? Let me know. Might be fun! Something like “America's got Talent”..any talent goes. Could be frightening? [email protected]. If you have a business and you would like to “Step Up for Your Club” by making a donation to support a special group, comedian or other act to play at OYC, let me know. Our Club will step up for you by giving your business publicity on facebook, on our web, in the Windward and on posters at the Club.

This Winter, I will again plan some “Cabin Fever” Happy Hours in local Taverns for our membership. They went over well and also helped our local businesses.

For next season I am looking to have music not only on alternate Saturday nights, and buffet Sundays but some Thursdays and some Fridays as members enjoyed the additional entertainment. I will be looking to be booking singles, duos and trios. If you have favorites let me know. I might have a couple of larger groups if the event calls for it. We'll see how plans work out.

I enjoy hearing your suggestions and welcome your

help with all and any event. Make this, our 125th

season, that you and your family “Step Up for Your Club”, especially if you haven't participated yet. For those who do, thanks so much, it is noticed and appreciated. We all belong to a great cooperative club and everyone can do a little something.

--As ever, Adele

OYC WINDWARD INFORMATION, UPDATES AND UPCOMING: SECRETARY’S MESSAGE

Some Duties of the OYC SecretaryOne of the primary duties of the OYC Secretary is to take meeting minutes and keep records of motions for reference purposes. But the duty that impacts our members most is communication. We as a board want to do everything we can to get up-to-date information to each of our members.

The OYC WebsiteAt the beginning of the 2013 season, Brad, Rich and I revamped the OYC website and we have tried to keep it as current as volunteers can. With a little tweak here, a couple of changes there, I try to make it user-friendly and pleasing to look at - but most of all, informative. Over the coming winter, there are tentative plans to make some more updates to keep up with changing technology. The ultimate goal is to be able to better communicate with you, our members. We hope you will visit the website often as we will try to add new content and photos. With the upcoming 125th Anniversary of the OYC we will try to share some of the interesting history of our Club and we hope you will enjoy it. Emails! We know anyone with an email address is inundated daily with the good, the bad, and the ugly the Internet has to offer. With that in mind we are conscious of what and how often we send you mail. This past season has been a test of a new format of email communication that we have been told is helpful. We will try to get you weekly information during the season as menus, entertainment or waterfront information changes occur. If you weren’t aware of some of these things, chances are good that there was an email hiding in your computer that you didn’t read. Email changes are also on the drawing board. We will keep you updated with our progress.

Member’s HandbookAnother duty is to compile the annual Member’s Handbook. Most of the information in the handbook that is issued to each membership at the start of each season can be found on the website. We don’t post names of members or their phone numbers on the web, so the Handbook is where you can find this information.

Send Us a Comment or QuestionPlease be sure to send comments or corrections to the Handbook. Or if you would like to comment in anything Club related, have a question or need general information that you can’t find on the website, there are two ways to do that: On the website there is a “Contact Us” tab that you can click on and your correspondence will go directly to our Gmail account. Or go directly to our current email; [email protected]

Please remember that the board and officers are all volunteering our time so if you don’t get an immediate response, we will do everything we can to reply as quickly as possible.

Member’s Photo BookLast, but never least, don’t forget to send a photo (new or updated) for our member photo book that is left in the clubhouse. There are sure to be some great family photos taken over the holiday season so feel free to send one to the Secretary by either of the two means listed above.

Have a great holiday and look forward to seeing and meeting you all in our Anniversary season!

-- Louise Wilson

OYC WINDWARD

Get the Grills Going! Warning: This is not your typical board of director Windward newsletter article. Read at your own risk.

Was it hot this summer or what? Too hot you say? Well, you forget that it is always 10 degrees cooler lakeside. As I write this on Saturday night, having raked up the last of the dry leaves this morning, and looking at the radar showing snow coming our way tomorrow, I bet you wish now that it was a tad warmer out there. So next year, stop pretending you live in Florida.....moving only from your air conditioned home, to your air conditioned car, to other air conditioned places.....and come up to the lake and enjoy the Yacht Club. OK, I'll grant permission to stop by your favorite air conditioned store to stock up your cooler. Pick up some burgers, hot dogs, condiments, whatever, and cook out for a change, or somewhere else besides your own back yard. What? That's a lot of work you say? Charcoal, lighter fluid, picnic baskets, coolers, yup, it

does take some planning, but c'mon, get out there. Take a chance, step out to the edge and look over. You might enjoy it! We all spend too much time in our man made caves hunched over our many electronic devices, so don't let the door hit you on the way out next summer as you pack up and spend some quality time at the Yacht Club. (For those who suffer electronic device withdrawal, we do have WI-fi).

I remember on any given night of the week when our kids were in the single digits to teen years, that would be the 90's and early 2000's, fist fights would break out if you got to the club too late, on any day of the week, because there were no picnic tables left. The losers would have to relinquish their picnic baskets to the victors, and were then relegated to ordering from the kitchen. Seriously though, our gracious members would do no such thing; when the tables were full, there was always someone who would share their space with you. Woefully though, how times have changed. While membership has remained consistent, the way the club is used has not. Fast times

need fast food, so barbecuing away from the homestead has gone the way of the rotary dial phone.

I refuse to give up though, and I will advocate with my last breath the need for more barbecuing to occur at the Yacht Club. Bar-B-Q, Bar-B-Q, Bar-B-Q, Bar-B-Q, Yes!!!! I can hear you chanting with me!!!!! Let's get out there and do it folks! You've got the whole winter to regret your decisions of summer's past and begin your plan to redeem yourself. Let's do this!!! See you next summer. I'm Mark, the Grounds Director, and I approve this message.
