Since starting his social media consult- ancy, Spiral Social Media, 12 months ago, Julies has enjoyed a level of success few young entrepreneurs know. Julies founded his company on the idea that businesses of all sizes are reaching a limitation in their marketing strate- gies. Most businesses, especially start- ups, run the risk of spending too much on marketing, with limited capital to fund it, but social media can give a com- pany the boost it needs. “We plan and advise businesses on how to use cross-social media platform ad campaigns,” Julies says. “We use your demographic to decipher how to use so- cial media marketing techniques. “Social media is not the silver bullet to make your business succeed, but if you use it wisely, your business can grow ex- ponentially.” In this ever globalised world, marketing strategies have changed the business model. “You must not only try to compete in the domestic market, but you are also competing in the global market,” the innovator explains. Potential young entrepreneurs, he says, mustn’t wait to start their own busi- nesses X instead, they must simply jump in. “You must just start your business,” Julies advises. “Before you start, you don’t know the formula to succeeding in your business and you cannot sit around and think everything through. You can only learn as you go.” He also advises young entrepreneurs to start entering into social exchange trades. “I never paid for my company’s premis- es,” he says. In exchange to set up shop, Julies provided the landlord with his spe- cific brand of expertise. “In this way, you can also save money if you want.” At the moment, Spiral Social Media has been hosting workshops to industry-spe- cific businesses, training them to market their company brand. Wine lovers share triumphs of Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Leading winemakers, wine lovers and buyers watched records tumble at the 32nd Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction at Spier over the past weekend. Total sales at this annual showcase of South African wines amounted to more than R13,8 million with new record wine prices for red, white, Méthode Cap Classique and Port. The auction and related events enable the Cape Winemakers Guild and its members to plough back by raising funds in support of transformation in the wine industry and the development of talented young winemakers and viticulturists. Over R1,95 million has been raised so far this year in aid of the Ned- bank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust, including R374 800 from charity items sold at the auction. With sales of R13 833 400, almost R2 million more than the previous record, the auction showed its pre-emi- nence once again as a show- case of top South African wines. For the second consecu- tive year, Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2013 fetched the highest price ever paid for a red wine at the auction, in a top bid of R13 400 for a case of six. White wine prices also soared with Jor- dan Chardonnay Auction Selec- tion 2015 setting a new auction record of R9 400. Other top- selling red wines included Rust en Vrede CWG Auction Es- tate 2013 at R12 600 and Beyerskloof Traildust Pinotage 2014 at R11 000. Top achiev- ing white wines included Ataraxia Under the Gavel Chardonnay 2015 at R7 800, Kaapzicht Estate Auction Selection 1947 Chenin Blanc 2015 at R6 400 and Paul Cluver The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2015 at R5 800. “The record auction gives recognition to the quality of our top-tier wines crafted in small volumes,” says Miles Mossop, Chair- man of the Cape Winemakers Guild, “and shows that South African wines are deserv- ing of the same high prices achieved by wines of comparative quality around the world. Our auction wines represent all the top growing wine regions in South Africa and show great diversity of style.” He expressed his appreciation for the gen- erosity shown by auction buyers in support- ing the transformation of the South African wine industry. Over and above the main auction, a record amount of R374 800 was raised on the day in aid of the Protégé Programme. Norbert Bernitzke and Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht Wine Estate at the CWG Auction.
