DO NAVARRA

The D.O. Navarra wine region is located in the north of Spain, between the Pyrenees and the Ebro River Valley, with its main city of Pamplona. A key characteristic of the (Designation of Origin) D.O. Navarra area is the extraordinary diversity of its climate and landscape which spread across more than 100 kilometres - the regions proximity of the Bay of Biscay in the north and the temperate influence of the Ebro river plain to the south.

Soils within the D.O. Navarra are mainly calcareous and limestone, deep and relatively gritty, with variable texture and fertility, of medium to light consistency, soft and very healthy. A phenomenon which gives rise to the wealth and wide array of wines under D.O. Navarra; from robust, deep reds to fresh, elegant whites, while not forgetting the rosés which have always been the region ’s hallmark wines.

DO BIERZO

El Bierzo lives in your memory. The mountains, colours, rivers, villages and the people make El Bierzo one of those places that remain in your memory. There is no doubt about that.El Bierzo is a region situated in the west of the province of León, in the Autonomous region of Castilla y León, bordering with Galicia.

El Bierzo is a region where everybody makes their own homemade wines, it is tradition. This is one of the reasons why it is so normal to find small plots of lands where over 70% of the vines are old plants.

This is basically because the wine was made for family consumption and there was no need for a large quantities, due to this the grapevines were not pulled up to increase production.

El Bierzo is located in the Sil valley, surrounded by mountains, and it has a mild microclimate nothing to do with the cold Meseta and the humid Atlantic climate;it is an ideal area for cultivating grapes, specially the local varieties Mencía and Godello.

Until recently, it was unknown to the international wine market yet, thanks to the investment and innovation that swept Spain in the 1990s, it now counts as one of the country’s rising stars, on a par with the likes of Rueda and Jumilla.

Red Wine

Pittacum Mencía €45 Intense cherry-red colour with a striking purplish rim, very clean and brilliant. It is marked by a complex bouquet, with a wide range of aromas including red fruits (blackberry, raspberry), liquorice and mineral tones, pleasant woody hints, spices – pepper and oregano – and an agreeable backdrop redolent of smoked cocoa. Warm in the mouth, with a significant concentration of fruit, pleasant balsamic resonances, dense and fleshy with sweet tannins. It is a tasty wine to be savoured with a persistent finish.

DO TIERRA DE LEON

Tierra de Leon was accorded DO status in 2007. Wine growing here dates to Roman times, although it was interrupted by an infestation of phylloxera in the late 1800s.

The region's climate is strongly continental, with the northern ranges sheltering it from the maritime influences of the Atlantic Ocean. Long winters prevail and frosts and fog are not uncommon. Like the majority of its fellow Castilla y Leon designations, Tierra de Leon sits at altitude, approximately 2625ft (800m) above sea level, which only adds to the diurnal temperature variation. Soils here are mostly alluvial, with stony deposits sitting on limestone.

An average of 2700 hours of sunshine a year favors the growth of red-wine grapes, especially Prieto Pricudo, an indigenous variety which produces bright and fruity wines with good body and acidity, suitable for drinking both young and after aging. Mencía is another important grape and accompanies Prieto Pricudo in blends as well as rosés.

Red Wine

Quinta Sardinia 2 78% Tinto fino, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdor, 4% Syrah,

3% Malbec.

DO VALDEORRAS

Today, the Valdeorras region is steadily earning a reputation as one of the most exciting places to search for quality white wine in Spain. It is located inland, approximately 90 miles from the coast on the banks of the River Sil in south-eastern Galicia. The name translates into “Valley of Gold” and according to historians; this corner of the Ourense province may well have been where the first grapes were planted in Galicia by the Romans. However, wine production here remained a largely anonymous activity, until recently. This damp, green corner of Spain was traditionally very poor and virtually ignored by the rest of the country through-out the centuries. This, and the region’s physical isolation, meant that it was not until the late 90s that the stupendous wines of Valdeorras found any market outside of Galicia and Spain – the area was awarded a D.O in 1977.

In the 1970s local growers began experimenting with the almost forgotten native Godello variety, on which the region’s fame is now largely based. Although red wines are also produced here – from the remaining plantings of Alicante Bouschet and Grenache – modern production of white wines from Godello generate the real interest in the outside world. The volumes released, however, are miniscule and most growers make only a few hundred cases of wine a year from a few hectares of vines. There are currently about 1,400 hectares under vine, tended to by 43 different producers.

The resulting wine is stunning. Expect a complex, age-worthy white unlike nothing else in north-eastern Spain. Indeed, unlike the equally popular Albariño, which should generally be consumed soon after release, Godello’s Chardonnay like structure means that it responds well to barrel aging and short-term cellaring. At its best, the grape offers powerful spicy and green fruit aromas, soft tropical fruit and a keen acidity. So in other words, an ideal wine to pair with the abundance of shellfish, fresh water and Atlantic fish that forms the standard Galician die

White Wine

Rogo Godello €42 Pale gold. Tightly focused lemon and quince aromas are complemented by deeper peach and honey qualities. Lively and sharply focused in the mouth, offering vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a spicy ginger flourish. Finishes taut, energetic and long, featuring lingering suggestions of bitter citrus rind and pear skin.

DO RIOJA

Rioja – the home of bright, berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha – is arguably Spain's top wine region. Located in northern Spain, Rioja's vineyards trace the course of the Ebro River for roughly 60 miles (100km) between the towns of Haro and Alfaro.

Rioja was the very first Spanish region to be awarded DO status, back in 1933, and in 1991 became the first to be upgraded to the top-level DOCa (see Spanish Wine Labels). The region's winemaking history stretches back to Roman times and has continued almost unbroken ever since.

Pronounced oak aromas and flavors are a quintessential component in the Rioja wine style (both red and white).

The amount of time that a Rioja wine spends in barrel dictates which of the official Rioja ageing categories goes on the label: Joven, Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva.

White Wine

Conde de Valdemar Viura €35.00 'Barrel Fermented' Intense fruity aromas, apple and peach to white flowers. Well assembled with the spicy notes provided during its ageing in French oak barrels. Fresh in the mouth, creamy with slight acid touches.

DO RUEDA

Rueda is a wine region at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, located just northwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid. It is known for its dry, aromatic white wines made predominantly from Verdejo, with small quantities of Viura and Sauvignon Blanc. These fresh, aromatic whites are an ideal complement to the heavy Tempranillo-based reds of neighboring Toro.

Standard Rueda Blanco must be made from at least 50 percent Verdejo, a variety so aromatic that even substantial additions of neutral-scented Viura (aka Macabeo) do little to reduce its character. Relatively recent additions to the region's wine portfolio are the varietal wines Rueda Verdejo and Rueda Sauvignon, which must be made from at least 85 percent of the stated variety

DO LA MANCHA

In the land of Don Quixote, wine plays a very important role both economically and culturally. The Meseta Central, a.k.a. Central Plateau, produces nearly half of the wine in all of Spain. It’s also home to over a dozen top wine Spanish bodegas (wineries). The region contains Madrid and the surrounding areas in the high plateau of Spain. It’s very hot and dry, so vineyards at higher elevations really shine. A value-driven region dominated by larger producers making mostly a fruity style of Tempranillo and Verdejo. Even though large producers dominate, the region shows potential based on its higher elevation vineyards.

White Wine

Mesta Blanco Verdejo €31 A crisp, aromatic white wine, showing great purity of aromas and a precise expression of the Verdejo grape. Bright, pale straw yellow, with intense, fresh notes of grass, fennel and white pepper.- Spain's answer to Sauvignon Blanc.

DO YECLA

Yecla is one of Spain's smallest wine regions. Established in 1975, the Yecla DO surrounds the city that shares its name. Like many small wine regions, Yecla has survived because of a fierce dedication to its traditions and heritage.

Although Yecla was founded as the city of Yakka during the Moorish occupation of Spain, winemaking predates the city by almost 1,000 years. Local legends claim that the ancient Phoenicians brought wine grapes to Yecla, and archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a first-century wine cellar near Fuente del Pinar. After Roman rule ended, wine production in Yecla continued, flourishing during the Moorish occupation and expanding as Spain's rulers consolidated their power. By the reign of King Philip II, Yecla was designated as a "bodega mayor" ("major winery").

Yecla's vineyards are planted on hills that range from about 1,300 to 2,600 feet in height. The DO's climate, while considered to be continental, is tempered somewhat by its southeastern location.

Yecla's soils lie on limestone bedrock. In most areas, there is a thick layer of subsoil topped by sandy or silty topsoil. Some vineyards are planted on stony topsoil, while the topsoils of other vineyards contain clay or loam. Typically, Yecla's soils are poor, with low nitrogen levels.

The Yecla DO includes two sub-regions, Campo Arriba and Campo Abajo. Campo Arriba lies north of the city of Yecla. This sub-region's vineyards lie at higher elevations than those of Campo Abajo. Campo Arriba is best known for its red wines, while more white wine grapes are grown in Campo Abajo.

White grapes planted in Yecla include airén, merseguera and macabeo. Yecla's red wines are better known, and most of these are made from monastrell grapes. Approximately 85 percent of Yecla's vineyards are planted in monastrell.

DO TARRAGONA

DO. Tarragona received DO status back in 1947, making it one of Spain's older designations. The wine region fans out from the picturesque city of the same name and the area is dotted with relics from times passed: Roman ruins and Gothic cathedrals.

The exact origins of viticulture here are not known. It is possible the Ancient Greeks brought vines to Tarragona. It is certain that the Romans who followed them produced and promoted wines of the region. Regardless of whoever first made wine here, the tradition has been a long one.

The diversity of the topography and climates means that Tarragona is capable of producing a wide range of wine styles. Traditional sweet fortifieds can still be found in the region's late-harvest Garnacha wines and the lighter Moscatel de Tarragona. However, in response to changing demand, Tarragona has adopted a greater variation of styles, with white wines – both varietals and blends for Cava dominating production. A major proportion of the region's grapes go into Cava production, being sold to the Cava estates in Penedes. (Tarragona's eastern half overlaps with the Cava designation).

Other significant red grape varieties include Ull de Llebre(Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Younger red styles from Tarragona are becoming more common.

VT RIBERA DEL QUEILES

Ribera del Queiles is a Vino de la Tierra title used in northern Spain. The viticultural area it covers straddles the border between Navarraand Aragon. The name Ribera del Queilesmeans "banks of the Queiles", the river which flows through the zone. Ribera del Queiles achieved VT status in 2003 and specializes in red wine.

While the region itself may not be well known, there are several estates in the region which have achieved international acclaim and a strong export network. Guelbenzu has the highest profile, while the Vintae/Winery Arts collective are up-and-comers with several of their wines in the Projecto Garnachas de España sourced from Ribera del Queiles.

The grape varieties authorized for use here are international favorites Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, grown alongside beloved local varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. All varieties must be vinified red and reach a minimum alcohol strength of 11 percent, which is hardly difficult, given the warm conditions.

DO CATALAYUD

When Calatayud achieved DO status in 1990, it became Aragon’s second largest quality wine-producing region after Cariñena. Since then, it has been upgrading and perfecting its wines with both cooperative and private bodegas undertaking progressive improvements.

There has been considerable investment in new technology, new winemaking systems and vineyard research. Thanks to all of these factors, the Calatayud wines are now beginning to show their true potential. Many of the new wines are exploring the possibilities of the Garnacha grape, harvested when fully mature. A new category of young red wines called Calatayud Superior is made from Garnacha from vines that are at least tfifty years old, with yields of no more than 3,500 kg per hectare.

DO PRIORATO

The remote, rocky hills of the Priorat wine region are the birthplace of intense, minerally reds that many wine writers and collectors consider to be Spain ’s most elite wines.

The distinctive slate-and-quartzite soil (locally called llicorella), an abundance of sunshine and an energetic group of young winemakers have earned the region a reputation as one of Spain ’s most innovative. The relentless relieve of Priorat ’s landscape means that vineyards here are planted in steep terraces similar to those found in the Douro valley. The terraces climb the hillsides in neat, curving rows that seem drawn onto the land. On the steepest slopes, they are like enormous staircases, creating a pretty picture but back-breaking work for those who have to pick the grapes by hand; machine harvests are all but impossible here. The land is demanding, but it ’s also the ideal place to expose the most interesting characteristics of indigenous grapes like Garnacha, Cariñena as well as international varieties including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 100m to 700m above sea level.

DO MONTSANT

Immediately to the west of the great Catalan wine region of Penedès are the vineyards of Tarragona, which houses the dynamic sub-region of Montsant. Twenty years ago, Montsant was little more than an unremarkable sub-zone of the larger Tarragona region, however, today Montsant is making a name for itself as a great value competitor to the mighty Priorat region. It is mainly the reds for which Montsant has become renowned for, the best of these excel and none more than the superb old-vine plantings of Garnacha. They can even rival top flight Penedès wines in blind tastings.

DO VALENCIA

Valencia has a long and proud history of vine cultivation, in fact archeological evidence suggests that wine has been made in the region since Neolithic times. With the arrival of the Romans in Spain, vine plantations and wine production increased dramatically to satisfy the demands of the Roman forces. The development of Valencia as a port ensured that a lucrative trade would develop through the centuries and the wine export business become very important for the city from the 16th century onwards.

Moscatel is named after the very grape that produces the area ’s famous dessert wines and is found to the south-west of Valencia City. The terroir is markedly different from the conditions of Valentino further north -a combination of low-altitude vineyards at typically 100m above sea-level and scorching summer temperatures favor the production of full-bodied, alcoholic reds and, of course, the Moscatel grape.

The Valencia D.O. permits a wide variety of styles and grape varieties to be produced within the region. Some of the red grapes planted include: Tempranillo, Monastrell, Bobal, Tintorera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and Petit Verdot. Whites are dominated by Merseguera, Malvasía, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillón Blanc.

As a result of the wide variety of grapes planted and different sub-regions, it is not easy to exactly pinpoint the Valencian quintessential wine style. In fact, it would be correct to say that above all else, this fascinating corner of Spain is the land of diversity. The wineries run the gamut from small, boutique operations, international companies and cooperatives, whilst the wines range from award winning reds, to aromatic whites, fortified wines and bulk production.

DOC VINHO VERDE

The region is demarcated since 1908 and is located in the extreme North of Portugal, bounded north by the Minho river, spreading along the Atlantic coast to the city of Porto, and south up to the shores of Vouga river.

The wine region of the "Vinho Verde" (Green Wines) is the largest in Portugal, with its 34000 hectares spread along a coast area geographically well situated, rich in water resources, with mild temperatures and abundant rains, which created homogeneous and mainly granitic soils, fertile and with high acidity, excellent for the production of white wines. The brand image of this region is the variety Alvarinho. The flagrant typicality and originality result essentially of the peculiarities of the autochthonous varieties of the region and the way they are cultivated. From all these factors results a naturally light, clean, refreshing and aromatic wine, different from any other in the world.

DOC BEIRA ATLÃNTICO

Baga is the highly productive red grape of Beira, grown in Bairrada. In the past, the wines made with 100% Baga were known to be densely structured, blackberry-fruit driven wines with high acidity and a tar-like finish. Odd, because the wines were so structured they would stubbornly (and slowly) morph into refinement over the course of 10 –20 years. Today things are changing. With careful vineyard strategies and vinification (winemaking), you’ll find a much wider range of Baga that are a stark contrast from Bairrada Clássico. From the aromatic and delightfully pink sparkling wines, structured light-bodied red that remind us of Pinot Noir, this area is one of the new frontiers of winemaking for the Portuguese. The wine geeks are very interested.

PORT

Port is one of the great classic European wines and its history is a long and fascinating one.

So what is Port wine? Port is a fortified wine. Fortified wines are made by adding a proportion of grape spirit, or brandy, to the wine at some point during the production process. Port is arguably the greatest of all fortified wines and its paramount expression, Vintage Port, ranks alongside the finest produce of Bordeaux or Burgundy as one of the great iconic wines of the world. In the case of Port, the addition of the brandy takes place before the wine has finished fermenting. This means that the wine retains some of the natural sweetness of the grape, making it rich, round and smooth on the palate.

One of the fascinating aspects of Port wine is its variety of different styles, each with its own characteristic flavours, from the intense berry fruit flavours of a Reserve or a Late Bottled Vintage to the rich mellowness of an Aged Tawnyor the sublime complexity of a Vintage Port. More than any other wine, Port offers endless opportunities for pairing with food.

SHERRY

Sherry is a wine produced in Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barrameda, and El Puerto de Santa Maria. It is a fortified wine, which means that a small amount of neutral grape spirit (brandy) is added to the wine to increase its alcohol content.

There are four dry styles of sherry: fino amontillado, palo cortado, and oloroso. These styles fit, in this order, along a spectrum from lightest to fullest.

In addition to the range of dry wines, the region produces two naturally sweet wines: pedro ximenez (known affectionately as “PX ”) and moscatel.
