White and sparkling wine labels

Functional and inspirational

Labels for white and sparkling wines represent the heritage, passion and dedication captured in every bottle. They should be a canvass for creative expression that conveys the essence of the wine.

For white wine labels in dry conditions, our selection of coated, uncoated, textured and metallised papers can all be used to bring brands to life. For humid conditions, our Wet Strength Alkali (WSA) treated papers as well as our Ice, Ice Premium, and film products will offer the right choice for additional staying power.

Ice and Ice Premium

Designers look for textured papers with a visual and tactile depth that connects with today’s consumers – but the magic is lost if the label fades or turns grey when wet or on ice.

Ice and Ice Premium withstand temperature fluctuations and remain smoothly adhered in humid refrigerated storage. Even when on ice, edge-lift, bubbles and wrinkles are avoided, keeping the label intact so chilled wines can still look as good as they did on the shelf.

Ice Premium products have a level of wet opacity that truly puts them in a class of their own. Even after hours in an ice bucket, these label materials, the inks and other embellishments look as solid and vibrant as when dry.

Red wine labels

Simple elegance or elaborate showcasing

Our red wine labels are designed to be your canvas for expression. These labels include a wide variety of options to delight both the eyes and the sense of touch, including coated, textured and metallised papers and films. For a bolder effect, holographic and foil label faces are also available.

The labels can be used with a full range of printing techniques, including digital printing for most of the label materials. Complementary embellishment options like embossing and hot and cold foiling can also be used for many of the labels.

Spirits labels

Making a statement with your spirits label

Whether the brand’s message is communicated through richly textured papers, vibrant colours, or detailed decoration our wide selection of quality label materials provide your canvas for expression.

Our VANISH™ range of clear film faces offers the ultimate no-label look and design versatility with a label that appears to be directly printed on the bottle. Film label materials are highly printable and you can use traditional printing methods such as offset litho, rotary, silk screen, UV flexo and gravure.

Craft beverage labels

Capturing the essence of craft

New varieties of craft beers and beverages continually enter the market, making standing out on the shelf even more important. Consumers expect that these products stay in tune with their origins and celebrate skilled beverage crafting from smaller breweries or distilleries.

Our pressure sensitive labels help communicate your brand story by providing a graphic canvas that can show as well as describe your commitment to artisanship. Designers can use textured, coloured, and metalised papers or ultra-clear and white films to create unique and informative labels that attract the consumer’s eye.

UPM Raflatac’s ultra-thin VANISH™ PET film enables three functionalities previously considered unviable: self-adhesive labeling on beverage cans, recyclability with aluminium cans, and the opportunity for beverage brands to market small batches cost-effectively.

Meeting the sustainability needs of the industry

At UPM Raflatac sustainability includes everything from innovation in materials and responsible sourcing to having effective recycling initiatives in place. With our eco-design approach, UPM Raflatac actively develops products to help move towards a circular economy where resources are used in a more sustainable way.

We are constantly expanding our product portfolio with these sustainability goals in mind. Environmental impacts are taken into account for all stages of our wine, spirits and craft label life cycles – from sourcing, production, delivery and use, to recycling and end of life.

Options for FSC and PEFC certified label components demonstrate responsibility to the environment, with wood raw materials sourced from sustainably managed forests.

An intricate part of eco-design includes working closely with the wine, spirits and craft beverage industry to find the right solutions and materials to support both functionality and sustainability.

Helping make the circular economy a reality

Our forward-looking life cycle assessment tool, Label Life, allows the environmental impacts of different label choices to be compared over their entire life cycles. Based on the most comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) in the industry, Label Life delivers reliable and easy-to-understand information to help label printers and end-users make sustainable choices.

The RafCycle programme offers significant benefits to label printers and end-users by turning waste into valuable resources. RafCycle certification can also help meet targets to reduce waste going to landfill, as well as having a positive effect on brand creation and realisation.

Label faces

Our label faces offer everything you need to communicate your brand, engage with consumers and achieve impact and differentiation.

Wet Strength Alkali (WSA) faces have a wet strength that makes them suitable for labelling returnable bottles. These label papers stay intact during bottle washing, safeguarding machinery from obstruction.

Clear film faces support the no-label look. Ultimate transparency is achieved with a high-clarity adhesive on a smooth film liner for the best adhesive wet-out. With a look that seems printed on the bottle, our clear film faces offer more opportunities for embellishment and easily changing designs.

Metallised papers and foils help achieve high visual impact and strengthen the impression of quality.

Textured and embossed papers convey a sense of premium quality. They can be used to create a range of effects, from artisan and antique to highly modern, and resonate closely with consumers by creating a tactile connection when touched.

Ice and Ice Premium faces remain fresh, vibrant and smoothly in place in cold temperatures and humid storage conditions. These label faces are specially designed for their end use, meaning the labels do not peel off or lift along the edges even after hours of being in iced water.

Adhesives

Our specialised adhesives tolerate fluctuations in temperature and humidity during transport, storage, and in the retail environment.

Recommended adhesives for paper faces

RP30 is designed for permanent wine and spirits labelling. It provides good adhesion to polar surfaces and tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity on the bottling line and during bottle storage. RP30 also has good water resistance during immersion in ice buckets.

RP30W is designed for wine and spirits applications when wash-off performance is needed.

Recommended adhesives for film faces

RP74 and RP76E keep labels looking crystal clear by supporting the no-label look on transparent containers such as

PET and glass. RP76E’s excellent UV-stability, plus resistance to water whitening, ensures clarity and long-lasting brand appeal for beverages.

RC7B is a clear permanent adhesive with excellent performance in terms of water and moisture resistance. This special adhesive retains good adhesion and stays clear even on wet bottles and withstands temperature fluctuations.

RC7W is designed for wash-off labels for PET beverage bottles. Labels can be washed off in hot caustic water and separated from ground-up PET bottles by gravity, leaving pure, food-grade polyester suitable for bottle-to-bottle use.

Liners

Our wine and spirits paper and film label faces are supplied with glassine papers or polyester (PET) film liners.

Benefits

White Glassine 85 • Good robustness• Stability• Excellent properties for embossing and die cutting complex

label shapes

Honey Glassine 65 • Suitable for a wide variety of applications • Compared to thicker papers, HG65 is more resource

efficient and also reduces liner waste

PET liners • Higher strength than HD for reliable high-speed label

dispensing, even in the presence of moisture, which maximises line efficiency

• Thin film liners provide better overall productivity compared to paper by yielding more labels per roll to reduce downtime on roll changes

• Provides a smoother adhesive layer for optimised wet-out and tight contact with the labelled surface – with a suitable high-clarity adhesive and label face you can create a premium no-label look
