Dear Winfield Families We are in the final quarter of the 2018-2019 school year and it has been an amazing year at Winfield. As the school year winds down, students and teachers are still very focused on learning. The end of year is a time when students are able to demonstrate what they have learned. Play Day Volunteer Information

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PLAY DAY

Mr. Pennington and Mrs. Robertson are busy scheduling Play Day for this year. They have been making schedules and

getting ready for this fabulous day. Here are the details:

Who: Every student at Winfield Elementary School in grades Pre-K through 5.

What: An entire school day of fun! Relays, games, free play, popsicles and teamwork will be on the order of the day.

When: Friday, May 31st, 2019 Time: 9:15—3: 15 Rain date: Tuesday, June 4, 2019

Where: All over the grounds and interior of Winfield.

Why: A celebration of effort, sportsmanship and physical activity – three very worthwhile goals to celebrate!

Parent Help Needed: We will have 16 stations on Play Day. With this many stations, we need at least 60 volunteers,

with more volunteers being desirable. Volunteers “run” stations that the children and teachers may or may not be

experienced at. If you are interested and are committed to being at school all day to help out (half day if you need),

first…MARK YOUR CALENDAR, then fill out the bottom portion of this sheet and return it to Mr. Pennington or Mrs.

Robertson. They will be in touch with you by Memorial Day Weekend.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Please remember that it is very important that the office know of any

dismissal changes for your student. There are procedures in place to

ensure that we are aware how each student is getting home at the end of

the day. There are a lot of staff members involved in dismissal and each

area needs to be notified of any changes. We ask that you notify us by

2:00pm so that we have time to notify everyone involved. For the safety

of your student he/she will only be released to individuals you have

indicated as an “Authorized” pickup person. We appreciate your

understanding and cooperation.

Child Lab/PreK PROGRAM

South Carroll High School Child Lab/PreK is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. The

program is 3-4 days per week and is open to all children ages 3, 4 and 5. The preschool is run by our high

school students who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Completer program to earn their 99 hour child care

certification and eventually become certified teachers. We follow the CCPS PreK Curriculum for

Kindergarten Readiness. For more information or an application please email Mrs. Adkins at

TRAINING

In order to be a volunteer in a classroom, a chaperone on a field trip or help at a school event you

must have taken the On-line Volunteer Training session this school year. You must have completed

the training seven (7) school days prior to the school event. You can find the Volunteer Training Session

at the Carroll County Public School Website.

** Lunchroom Visitors **

Please be reminded of our policy concerning visitors to our cafeteria. Only a student’s parent/legal

guardian is allowed to visit during lunchtime unless written permission from the parent/guardian is

received by the school allowing others to do so. It is permissible for a note to be written permitting

lunch visits for specific individuals for the entire school year.

In addition, we continue to ask that siblings and other young children not accompany adult visitors

during lunch. This policy has been put into effect due to safety concerns, space limitations, and the

need for appropriate supervision of our young visitors. You can view the school lunch menu on the

Food Pantry

The South Carroll “Cavalier Cupboard” food is growing! Funded by the Maryland Food Bank, this food

pantry was developed to meet the needs of our community. The pantry is open on the 2nd and 4th

Thursday of the month from 2:45 until 4:00 on school days. Any South Carroll family or feeder school

family that needs support is invited to use the resources in the food pantry. The pantry will be open

beginning October 25, 2018. We will be open every other Thursday that schools are in session for

students.

Please note that any day that the school is closed, the pantry will be closed. Additionally, we will open

by appointment. Please contact Jennifer Brauer via email [email protected] or phone (410)751-

3575 to set up an appointment outside of our normal operation hours. Our pantry is located behind

the school. The entrance is to the far right of the playground.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Cavalier Cupboard, please do not hesitate to reach

Parents or guardians of children receiving special education and related services were mailed the

Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey from the Maryland State Department of

Education, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services during the week of February

4, 2019. Parents are asked to complete the survey and return it in the postage paid envelope by

Champion May 6-10 is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week in Maryland. Thursday, May 9 wear green to support children’s mental health.

Fast Facts about Children’s Mental Health

Mental Health refers to a person’s overall social, emotional, behavioral and psychological well-being. It impacts how we think, feel, and act, including how a child: 1. Feels about himself/herself 2. Relates to other children and adults 3. Handles change, stress and other life situations

1 in 5 children experience a mental, emotional or behavioral health problem before age 18. These problems affect children of all demographic groups, regardless of education, income, race or culture.

Up to 70% of school-aged children with a diagnosable mental illness do not receive treatment. Early intervention is the best way to prevent long-term or severe conditions into adulthood.

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is a great time to learn more about children’s mental health and to check out available resources to help ensure all children have the opportunity to be successful in school, at home, in the community, and in their future and adult lives.

will be utilized for working on the children’s IEP goals and objectives. The Ants go Marching will be the rhyme for the month of May and June. May 10 – 10:00 a.m. We will have a lamb come to school. You may bring your child to visit the lamb. You must stay with your child as I will be with the morning class. The lamb will be on our playground! We will be out with the lamb but with our group from the morning class. May 18 – Spring Fair at Winfield Play day May 31– we will attend for a small amount of time. Parents and siblings are welcomed to attend. When we get the play day schedule I will let you know when we will go outside. June 14 - 3:00-3:30. We will have an end of year celebration by enjoying your child’s artwork and music. We will enjoy time together on the playground (your child’s favorite part of the day), sharing artwork and music. CCPL AND CCPS SUMMER READING PARTNERSHIP

This year, the Carroll County Public Library and Carroll County Public Schools are

teaming up to present students with a collaborative summer reading program!

The Summer Discovery Reading Program offers students two choices for record

keeping and book reviews. An online version of the materials will be available

through the CCPL website, the CCPS website, and Winfield’s Media Center

webpage. Printed materials will be distributed to students at school in June.

At the end of the program, CCPL will review online submissions and send

information about books read and reviews written/recorded to each school. If

students use the printed materials, those forms will need to be submitted to the

ELA Specialist, no later than September 13, 2019.

Students who meet the expectations below, track reading, and create book

reviews (by 9/13) will be invited to a reading celebration held at school next fall!

KINDERGARTEN

As the weather heats up and May testing approaches for both ELA and math, please help your child stay

on track by being consistent with schedules and making sure they get enough sleep. We will work together

to continue showing ROAR behavior in our community.

As the year comes to an end, our kindergarteners will be working hard to meet our end of year goals. In

writing, the students will be using their letter-sound knowledge and knowledge of sentence structure to

write 2 complete sentences regarding one single topic. In reading, the students will be working towards

using/applying their reading skills, reading strategies, and sight word knowledge to comfortably read a D

level text (or beyond). With these texts, students will also work on retelling and answering comprehension

questions. Students are expected to have mastered 50 sight words by the end of the school year. In math,

the students will be finishing their unit 4 and reviewing all concepts taught throughout this year. Thank

you to all families who have supported us and the children throughout this school year!

1st Grade

As we wrap up our year we have two final important dates for you to mark on your calendar. On May 13th

we have our field trip to the Catoctin Zoo. Money is due by Friday, May 3rd. June 6th will be our Author’s

Celebration on our Hero Student Treasure’s book- mark your calendars but look for more information

coming home soon!

In ELA we are learning how to retell stories using cause and effect, central message, and author’s

purpose. We continue to practice writing complete sentences using correct language and conventions.

In writing will be writing a book review. We will then learn to write a narrative nonfiction piece to tie in

with our zoo trip.

In math we are beginning our final unit on measurement. We will tell time to the hour and half hour. We

also will be measuring using nonstandard units. May begins our Benchmark review. Please complete the

math calendar to help your child review past skills.

In Social Studies, we continue to receive Flat Stanley’s. We will then be moving into our Best of Bugs

Science Unit where students will learn about pollination and create their own hand pollinator.

2nd Grade

In math, we will end the year with Unit 5: Geometry, Partitioning, and Unit 6: Foundations of Multiplication. During Unit 5, your child will develop an understanding of how to describe and analyze shapes by examining their sides and angles. Students will investigate, describe, and reason about decomposing and combining shapes to make other shapes. Students will also partition circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares, describing the shares using the words, halves, thirds, half of, and thirds. Students will recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. During Unit 6, your child will work with equal groups and arrays of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Students will find the total number of objects arranged in equal groups or rows/columns by using repeated addition and/or skip counting. Students will begin to learn strategies in order to ensure fluency with foundational multiplication facts of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. This unit will help transition our students into third grade. In science, we will study the remaining two units. The first unit is entitled, Matter and Its Interaction. Students will describe and classify matter by its observable properties. Students will know that different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. Students will learn that engineers are people who use a process to help solve problems or make things better. We will teach the students to use the Engineering Design Process as an organized way to study a problem and identify possible solutions. The last unit is entitled, Earth Systems. Throughout this unit, students will learn that wind and water can change the shape of the land quickly or slowly. Students will be able to explain that water is located in the oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds. Water can exist in liquid or solid form. During our Design Challenge, students will understand there is more than one possible solution to a problem. This will become evident through comparing and testing our designs. Please assist your child in practicing his/her math facts. All playground facts must be mastered by the end of second grade. Please refer to the timeline if you need assistance. 3rd Grade

Third Grade ELA NEWS: It is hard to believe how fast the school year has gone and how much the children

have learned this year! The children have completed the CBA county reading/writing assessment and the

state assessment, PARCC by mid-May. You can expect to receive information on the CBA sometime soon

and you will have results from the PARCC assessment by mid-summer mailed directly to your home

address.

As we finish our Regions tour of the United States, the students have been keeping pioneer journals to

detail events that have occurred. They are using their small reading group books, articles and the social

studies book to help them develop an understanding of the struggles that Pioneers had as they began the

Westward movement and how this event was important to the development of our country.

Over the summer months, it is critical to have your child read and write daily to maintain taught skills.

Connected.com is available throughout the summer months for reading/writing and phonics practice.

Along with this, the public library has a wonderful reading program with many incentives to get kids

motivated for reading all summer long! In addition to daily reading, keeping a journal is a great way to

maintain writing skills such as; spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence clarity.

STEM News

Math in May

*Students will begin Unit 7, “Geometry and Measurement”. Students will describe, analyze

and compare attributes of quadrilaterals. Students will also continue to strengthen their

understanding of perimeter of shapes and identifying area of irregular shapes.

*Students have a benchmark calendar that they should be working on each evening in

preparation for our end of year assessment.

*Please continue to support your child in their fact practice in multiplication and division.

Math in June

*Our last unit of study is Unit 8, “Demonstrate Computational Fluency in Problem Solving.”

Students will apply their knowledge of all four operations in problem solving stories. Students

will also create, analyze and interpret data from picture graphs and bar graphs.

Science

*Students will classify materials based on their properties. Students will apply their knowledge

to identify a mystery substance by providing evidence to support their idea.

4th Grade

In fourth grade Humanities students are studying the War of 1812, The Civil War, Slavery, and

Immigration. This quarter students will also be working on writing to inform. In math students are working

in the measurement and multiplicative comparison unit. Students are converting customary and metric

measurements. They are also working on writing and interpreting multiplicative and additive statements.

In science we are working in the waves unit. As we wrap that up we will be moving on to earth systems

where students explore effects of weathering and erosion.

On May 17th students will be taking a field trip to Bear Branch Nature Center. More information about this

will be coming home with your student shortly. Currently students are working on PARCC/MCAP testing.

We can tell students are working very hard at showing all they have learned this year. Additionally,

students will soon be taking the May benchmark assessment for math. A review calendar will be coming

home with your student to help prepare them for this assessment.

Gifted and Talented Program Information

When students are screened for gifted and talented intervention, outstanding academic ability and certain

characteristics and thought processes are observed and documented. Teachers look for students who possess a wealth of information

about selected topics and/or are able to grasp information quickly and remember it with little practice. They observe

students who are able to understand general concepts and make abstractions and connections between seemingly

unrelated topics and ideas. If a student possesses some or all of these abilities, he or she can be screened for

identification.

The Referral and Review Team convenes 3 times a year – fall, winter, spring or as needed.

Evaluation for gifted and talented intervention begins in the spring of second grade and continues throughout the school

year for grades 3, 4, and 5. The chart above illustrates the sequence of steps involved in the screening process.
