2018 Couple of the Year
The following narrative reveals how GWRRA Chapter TN-C “Wings Across Tennessee” Ride originated.
On a Thursday evening during the summer of 1996, Mike Taylor mentioned how rewarding it would be if GWRRA Chapter TN-
C could do something to help the children at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. Several ideas
were suggested. Members of TN-C chose to organize a “cruise-in” and take pictures of the motorcycles and cars participating
for the cause, then sell the pictures for donations to St Jude. The “cruise-in” was held at Pizza Inn in Elizabethton Tennessee.
Mike Taylor made contact with Dot Xiques (pronounced Hickus) at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital to inquire if GWRRA
Chapter TN-C members could ride their motorcycles to the Hospital and present the money they had collected. Dot’s reply
was, “I don’t know about a motorcycle group coming here. This has never been done before. I will have to check to see if this
is okay.” Dot received approval for TN-C members to make the ride to the Hospital. On a Friday morning in October 1996, the
group headed to Memphis. Keith Marsh, James Daughtery, Larry Roberts and Mike Taylor rode their motorcycles. Nyoka
Holder, Carolyn Taylor and Ginger (a patient of St Jude living in Elizabethton Tennessee) accompanied them in a van. Jon
and Nancy Byrd rode their motorcycle from Florida to Lebanon Tennessee and joined the others traveling to St Jude.
On the following Saturday morning, the group arrived at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. While in the parking lot, the
group opened their pockets to add to the previous money collected and proudly presented $5,000 to St Jude. They personally
met St Jude correspondents, Dot Xiques and Chris House. These St Jude correspondents offered the group a heartwarming
tour of the Hospital. Keith Eggerton (a staff member at St Jude) grasped the “cruise-in” concept and expanded it to a slogan
still used today. The slogan is entitled “Cruisin’ for St Jude”. The unpretentious slogan was adopted to appeal to all future mo-
torcycle groups interested in raising funds and traveling to St Jude.
In 1997 the TN-C Chapter Director, Tom Jarrell, named our ride “Wings Across Tennessee” … in view of the fact that the ride
actually travels across the entire State of Tennessee (from Bristol to Memphis). During the past twenty (20) years, Chapter TN
-C has hosted many charity events to raise funds for St Jude and some of our TN-C ladies make quilts and pillowcases to sell
in honor of someone or in memory of someone for a donation made to Chapter TN-C to present to St Jude. Our “Wings Across
Tennessee” ride has grown by leaps and bounds. During our September 2016 ride, we registered 106 riders (including other
motorcycle groups traveling with Chapter TN-C). We are blessed to have the support and assistance of law enforcement agen-
cies all across the State to keep our riders safe. Our charity events allowed us to present over $100,000 to St Jude in Septem-
ber 2016. We plan to host additional charity events this year in anticipation of collecting extra funds to present during our Sep-
tember 2019 “Wings Across Tennessee” St Jude ride.
Everyone is invited to ride with Chapter TN-C as we journey across the State for this remarkable cause!

Wing Ding 41 Guided Ride
The spotlight was on Nashville as people from all over the world converged on the Opryland Hotel for a week of fun and fellowship at Wing Ding 41. One of the events was the guided rides laid out by three of our local chapters. The one I was riding was coordinated by Steve Thomas of Chapter TN-A. We all met Thursday in the large parking lot behind the Nashville Palace restaurant at 8:45 on a beautiful cloud-less morning. Each of the rides met in different areas of the parking lot. Steve’s ride had by far the most participation. I didn’t count them, but there had to have been at least 60 bikes. Steve and Troy scrambled to find additional leaders and tail gunners to accommo-date the numbers. We ended up with three groups with about 20 bikes each. Steve led the first group out, then Grant Bottomley TN-S with his riders, and finally it was Wink’s turn. I was Wink’s tail gunner. From the Opryland Hotel it takes a while to get out of town no matter which direction you travel, but with Steve’s directions and Wink’s knowledge of the roads, we did it. The first part of the ride was on main roads north of Nashville and east of Goodlettsville. Wink kept us entertained as we rode along with her history and geology lessons. After a while we made our way to Gallatin and stopped at the Dairy Queen. It turned out to be a hot day with the sun beating down on us, so it was a welcomed break.
We left the Dairy Queen and rode through Gallatin on Hwy 31W until we turned left onto the backroad section of the ride. I knew the best roads were yet to come as I had ridden some of them with Steve before. Steve had warned us in advance to be on the lookout for deer, loose cattle, gravel on the road, and farm equipment that takes its half out of the middle. We meandered our way through the fields and forests and up and down the hills as we followed creeks and fencerows through the lush green country-side. The scenery was beautiful and the roads were good. I was sure glad Wink had ridden the route a couple of times and was fairly familiar with the roads, because I was lost. Finally, we came out on Hwy 174 and I knew where I was. We followed it back to Gallatin where it became Long Hollow Pike and led us back to Goodlettsville. We hopped on I-65 south to Briley Parkway east and back to Opryland and the Wing Ding festivities. Everyone I talked with was impressed with the beauty of rural Tennessee. Steve did an excel-lent job of laying out the ride, and Wink was an out-standing ride leader!

Thank you, Grant Bottomley, for letting Wink draft
you into leading a group of out-of-state visitors
around and into our beautiful state of Tennessee.
They all loved our “scenic country roads tour”.
And thank you Steve and Karen for the plan!

Dennis from GWRRA TN District sent you a message on GroupWorks:
Prayers need for Connie and Richard Pendleton, TN-C. On their way back from St. Jude’s in Memphis TN their Sling Shot was hit in the windshield by a tire tread that came off a Semi on I 40. They were about at Dixon TN. Richard is good but Connie took much more of the hit. She is doing well but was transferred to a Hospital in Nashville because a CAT scan showed a brain bleed. If I get more infor-mation I will pass it on. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

September 2019 GOD BLESS AMERICA
Why Go to Church? One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, "I'm not going." "Why not?" she asked. "I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me, and two, I don't like them." His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why you SHOULD go to church: One, you're 59 years old, and two you're the pastor!"
