    Holy Week and Easter

One of the things that always troubles me about this time in the

Churchs calendar (Lent, Holy Week and Easter) is that we seem

too anxious to get to Easter and so we miss the opportunities that

Lent and Holy Week provide to us for reflection and self-understanding.

When I say we I include myself in that equation. Since becoming apriest I find that I am often focusing on whats coming up and I spend too

little time focusing on whats happening right now. Not being present to

what is happening right now is never a good thing but particularly in thecontext of Lent and Holy Week when reflection can be so fruitful.

This year seems to have been particularly difficult for me in this

connection. There have been many things occurring and I have allowedmyself far too many distractions. Does that sound familiar to any of you?

Are you as susceptible to distractionsnecessary or unnecessaryas I

am? But, of course, that is the stuff of human life, isnt it?

I think we can take some comfort in the fact that during Holy Week Jesus

must have felt the same way. Knowing, as he did, that he is approaching

the end we can imagine that he might have wished for a little time forpeaceful reflection. But when we look to the gospels we know that there

was no time during his last week for peaceful reflection. In fact, Jesusfinal week seems to have been filled with activity and the anxiety that

accompanies having too much to do. So perhaps in our business we can

reflect that Jesus too was stretched far too thin even in the last hours of hislife. So thin that even the hour spent in the garden with his Father was

painful and distracted because his Father did not seem to listen and his

friends were too sleepy to care about what he was going through.

So it seems that we can use our very distractedness and busyness as a pointof contact with Jesus. Perhaps we can snatch a minute or two during the

days ahead to reflect upon how our lives are like Jesus life even in this

    most mundane of details.

There is another question that I would like us to reflect upon this week, too, if we have a chance. During

this Lenten season I have been asking myself the question What is there when I am not? That may

seem like a silly question and yet I think there is much to be learned from it. We know from the gospels

and Paul and the later Christian tradition that Jesus emptied himself and took the form of a slave. That

act of self-emptying (kenosis in Greek) is of the first importance for understanding who God is and whowe are. By emptying himself as he did, Jesus made room for God to be absolutely present in his life.

And he also made room for you and me to be present in his life. For this reason, it seems to me to beworth asking the question What is there when I am not? When I empty myself what is there? Orperhaps we should ask Who is there when I am not?

When you ask yourself this question, you might also consider what is keeping you from the act of

emptying. Those things that are keeping you from it are all not-God; not because they are inherently evil

but because you have attached your little self to those things and made them into your god. Jesusresponse to the question was complete surrender; not because that is what he wanted but because that is

what enabled him to make space for God and for us. What stands between you and complete surrender?

What stands between you and God? I believe that an answer to this question and a struggle to removethe obstacle will enable us to fully experience the resurrection to new life.

May you have a blessed Holy Week and Easter season!Father Tim

    Church School / Nursery

    The Church school children will

    be participating in the Palm

    Sunday procession into church

    on April 1st.

    On Easter Sunday, April 8th,

    they will hand out "Alleluia"

    strips, which they have colored

and decorated, to people as they

    enter church. This is to

    celebrate the return of

    "Alleluias" in the service, which

    have been missing during Lent.

    The annual Easter Egg Hunt

    will be held following the

service. Thank you to all who

    contributed eggs and candy for

the event. Due to these special

    celebrations, there will be no

    Church S chool classes either

    Palm Sunday or Easter Sunday.

    Classes will resume on Sunday,

    April 15th.

The lessons for April will focus

on the meaning of E aster and its

    symbols, through activity

    books, art, and song.The

    children will share how they

    celebrated the season at church

    and at home.

The theme of Easter is the

promise of new life, as in the

    signs of spring and the

    resurrection of Jesus.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are coming to the

    Franklin Institute!

In 1947, a shepherd stumbled upon a hidden cave along

the shore of the Dead Sea. Concealed inside were

ancient scrolls that had not been seen for 2,000 years. After extensive excavation, a total of 972 remarkably

preserved scrolls were found, including the earliest

Biblical texts ever discovered. Now known as the Dead

Sea Scrolls, they have been called the most significant

archaeological find of the last century. This exhibit will

be at the Franklin Institute from May 12 to October 14,

2012. See Stacey if you are interested in going to see

    this impressive display!
