Seek the Truth, ot the Judgment

Socrates famously said that the unexamined life is not worthliving. He also believed that no one knowingly does what is

    wrong.

Many of us may find this second point a lit tle hard to swallow. Surely people frequently act badly and when they do so, they know that whatthey are doing is wrong. True enough; but that misses the point of Socrates observation. All of us, at one time or another, have donethings or have failed to do things, that we knew to be wrong; that is,that violate societal norms and expectations, that might put others atrisk or that harm others, etc. Still, when we do what we do, we do so

because we think it is good, even if only in that selfish sense of goodfor us. For example, who would rob a bank if they did not think that itwould be good to have the money? The same is true of any other wrong action that we may undertake; we do it because wethink the result will be good, even if only for us.

Now Socrates point is not that there is no such thing as goodor bad. On the contrary, Socrates firmly believed that some actions aregood and others bad. His point was that one who acts badly wrongly

believes they are doing something good. And so what is required iseducation. One who acts badly does so because they wrongly

believe what they are doing is good, and when we have a wrong belief what we require is education. We need to learn so that we cansee the bigger picture which will enable us to see the error of our ways and to avoid mistakes of that sort in the future. And this, of course, is where the importance of the examined life comes in. Onelearns more and more about ones self, about the truth and aboutwhat is right and wronggood and badthrough examination of ones self and ones life.

Recently I have come to see the connection between theseattitudes of Socrates and Jesus counsel judge not, and you willnot be judged; do not condemn and you will not be condemned.Forgive and you will be forgiven; give and it will be given to you for the measure you give will be the measure you get back (Luke6:37-8). What do these have in common? They both require us tolook at ourselves firstto examine our lives; to look first atourselves. In fact, many of Jesus parables and remarks were meantto direct our attention back on ourselves.

    P.2

Of course, while it is fun to think about these things (youre having fun, right?) it is exceedingly difficultto practice them. Most of us, and I think all of us some of the time, are given to looking askance at theactions of others rather than looking to ourselves either to understand why we are making the judgmentswe are (why does what s/he did push my buttons so?) or to give a more charitable explanation for why the person in question acted as s/he did. How often has it happened that as you came to know moreabout someone you have harshly judged that you came to understand why they did what they did? Iconfess that has happened to me more times than I care to remember. The truth is were not all thatdifferent. And when we know someone elses story more fullynot only the particulars of the event inquestion but their personal history as wellwe are better able to see that we would haveacted pretty much the same way were we similarly situated. The problem is that most of us would prefer not to see that; we take comfort in seeing the wrongs of others and in supposing that we could never go sofar astray. I confess that I am puzzled why we delight so much in seeing the faults and failings of others

but we do, dont we? And generally our judgments of the wrongs of others has to do with imputing all

manner of evil intentions to them, as if they are malevolent creatures who have acted as they have onlyfor the sake of acting badly. So what can we do instead? We can follow Socrates advice. We can ask ourselves why we are so exercised about this; we can attempt to understand why the person might haveacted as they did; and if we are unable to comprehend why the person acted as they acted, we can at leastsuppose that they were doing the best they could and that they thought what they were doing was

somehow good. When we adopt this attitude and when we strive to know others stories more completely,we are better able to understand why they have done what they have, and our world becomes a littlelarger. Our world becomes larger because we come to see things as others see them and moreimportantly we come to see that others ways of seeing are not so different from our own. Jesus also saidthe truth will make you free (John 8:32). In this case, the truth we know about others will make us freefrom that tyrannical small self of ours who seeks only its own aggrandizement even at the expense of its

brothers and sisters. So who are you judging these days? Have you asked yourself why you want to holdonto this negativity? Have you considered how you might have acted in that persons position? And haveyou tried to see that that person was simply doing what they thought right, best and good in the situation? If you are unwilling to ask yourself these questions, then perhaps you are simply unwilling to let go of your anger and indignation. But if that is so, whos really at fault? May we all find the truth and be setfree by it. God Bless!Father Tim+

    HOLIDAY HOUSE BY DOREE GULLEY

Holiday House is a great place to spend your summer vacation. It's a great place to spend your summer becauseyou get to go to the beach every day, meet new friendsand get to do fun activities with your new friends. Don'tforget about the food, you get something different almostevery day and it's good. The second day you get toHoliday House is when the real activities happen. Firstyou get woken up by a leader or a fellow GFS member, get ready for your day, go into the living room where yousee a group of girls playing cards, another group watchingTV and a third group sitting down and just talking. Thenyou here a bell ringing and you know it's time for

breakfast, everybody gets in a line then we calmly walk into the dinning room pick a table, say a prayer, sit down

and eat. After breakfast you go back up stairs clean your room, because when you come back from the beach there might just be a note. When your room is all nice and neat, you go back down to the livingroom and wait for your first activity of the day. After everyone is down the leaders enter the livingroom and give you and your group that you were put in on the very first minute you entered. You andyour group get together and you finish your activity. Then guess what? It's my favorite part of the daywhere you get to go the beach. So you go back up to your room again, change into your bathing suit getevery thing you need including sunscreen and towels. When you are all dressed and packed, go to B-floor and exit out the door that says Beach Exit, go down the wooden stairs to the back yard then itslunch time. Normally for lunch, we would have something like PB & J, tuna or a ham and cheesesandwich. After we eat we get in a line from smallest to tallest and take count we head to the beachwhile we sing our anthem. We stay at the beach from 1- 2 hours and when we get back we hose thesand of ourselves change into our cover-ups in changing stalls. Then we go back up the Beach Exitwhere a leader will put you on the list to take a shower. When you are on the list go to your room and

lay out your clothes so when you're finished with your shower you already have the clothes you aregoing to wear and then we get dressed for dinner. We do get dress pretty fancy. When you take your shower don't take to long because there are a lot of other people waiting, the most time you should takeis 5 minutes. After you're dressed go to the living room and wait for the bell. When the bell rings get inthe line enter the dinning room choose a different table than breakfast and say your prayer. Then sit, eatdinner then desert. While desert is being eaten there is normally a game that is played which would besing us a song. How you play is sort of in the name you and your table choose a song to sing andwhen some table says ''sing us a song table'' what ever table you're at ''sing us a song''. Thats when yousing. When dinner is over we get changed into comfortable clothes for another activity. The activitymight be arts and crafts or going places like the board walk, the mall, or the Nature Center. After evening worship we would have a snack then go upstairs to get changed into our PJs for a campfire inthe hall. At our campfire there is not a real fire, but we sing songs like The Wheels Around the Bus, If You're Happy and You Know it, or sometimes Lemmy.

That is why being at Holiday House is a great way to spend your summer. I can't wait for next year because I know it will be twice as terrific.

Also no surprise to me is the fact thatour presiding bishop is a former oceanographer who understands theimportant relationship between thewatery wonders of creation andscientific fact. Biology without faithor faith without biology can limityour scope and lead to rigidness.

I was not always a person of faith soit took me a long time to realize thatI can believe in evolution ANDChristianity. It was a joy to realizethat there was a faith for me where I

could believe in both openly andfreely. So, my sand dollar cross holdsmeaning for me in that respect too. When things get rough, I reach for the sand dollar cross pendant aroundmy neck and touch it. It calms meand is a reminder of what Im about, what my passion is and why I riseevery day.

    The Sand Dollar Cross

Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business in

great waters; These see Yahweh's works, And his wonders in the deep.- Psalm107: 23-24

I express my faith with many symbols. I am acollector of icons, rosaries and crosses. I have anice collection of cross necklaces of manyvarieties that I wear. But the one necklace that Iseem to come back to the most is my sterlingsilver cross with a sand dollar in the middle. There is a poem that claims the sand dollar as aChristian symbol- with its various markingsdenoting the crucifixion, Jesus birth, doves andan Easter lily. For me though, my sand dollar cross symbolizeseven more than that. The cross symbolizes myfaith, and the sand dollar the ocean- twoawesome things that bring serenity to my life.In fact, in the summer months there are dayswhere I attend to these two passions in the sameday: I attend church in the morning and lay onthe beach in the afternoon.

The cross and sand dollar are melded together-further symbolism for me that nature and Godare one, and that creation and science are notopposites- but are of one entity. The sea is important in our faith- it was bornalong the seas of ancient lands. The sea is

referred to in the Bible many times, and also inthe Psalms. Is it any surprise that many of our churches that are near coasts have By The Seain their names?

GFS Jr. Week 2010 - Goodbye

    by Miah Shahene

Its honestly sad to say that this will be my lastyear of Jr. Week at Holiday House the summer home to GFS girls. No, Im not quitting, Imsimply moving up to a waitress, of course, since I will be old enough. This was my fourthyear, and well, it was quite interesting I couldsay. There was some new rules, but a lot of thegirls still made it work. I made a lot of newfriends, and still hung out with the old ones. Iwas happy to see that my roommate was one of the nicest girls at the house, Arielle, from theAfrican-American Church of St. Thomas. Thenagain, werent we all nice? My favorite thingout of this week though had to be the beach, of course, and to the cove and went hunting for ghost crabs at night. That was fun! It did freak me, but it was something new! Every year thereis always something new to look forward to!And next year Ill be looking forward toworking as a waitress!
