Maayo gid basahon ang “Objection toRH bill based on conscience” saPOSTSCRIPT ni Federico D. Pascual Jr.(The Philippine Star) Updated May 17,2011 12:00.

“But my religion is not the main reasonfor my opposition. My objections springlargely from conscience — which tellsme a grievous wrong is about to beinflicted on an unwary population by ahalf-baked bill being rushed throughthe kitchen.

Many of us feel compelled to speak up,because we see the imminence of beingensnared in an ill-conceivedhodgepodge of a law that goes againstnot only the Constitution and thereligious beliefs of the majority but also,in my case at least, of conscience.”

LEGITIMIZING CRIME: The passageof HB 4244 as now worded — and forwhich President Noynoy Aquino hasannounced support — will legitimizemany of the crimes being committedunder the aegis of the state usingtaxpayers’ money.

One such offense is the violation of theconstitutional mandate under Section12of Article II which says, “It (the state)shall equally protect the life of themother and the life of the unborn fromconception.”

Government personnel commit thecrime by, among other means, thewanton distribution and use of artificialcontraceptives with abortifacienteffects, thereby killing the unbornhuman being by preventing itsimplantation in the womb for normalnourishment and growth.

The Congress and the President seek tolegitimize that massacre of the unborn— with taxpayers footing the bloodybill.

President Aquino now blamespopulation growth for the povertyaround us while neglecting other meansto mitigating the problem. Has heforgotten his campaign battle cry“Kung walang corrupt, walangmahirap!”?

DISCRIMINATION: It is unfortunatethat Catholics who stand up to opposethe RH bills as now worded are deridedand their religious beliefs ridiculed.

How come not a whimper is heardwhen pastors of another religious sectinstruct their members to vote forcandidates who — in exchange for themembers’ votes — had pledged supportfor the sect’s advocacies and appointeesto key government posts?

How come another set of laws, such asin the contracting of multiplemarriages, is applied when it involvesmembers of another religion withjihadist tendencies? Why are theyentitled to have their own special laws, and in effect their own republic withinour republic?

But when we Catholics and our bishopsobject to what we think would be agrievously faulty law, we are ridiculedand slapped with the principle ofseparation of the Church and the State(which does not apply)?

ABORTIFACIENT: My Postscript lastSunday called attention to Section 12,Article II, of the Constitution declaringit an obligation of the state to protect“the life of the unborn from conception.”

That piece laid out, clearly I think, that:

1. Conception refers to the moment offertilization, or when the sperm and theovum unite and form a distinct andindividual human being.

2. Upon conception, that human beingstarts enjoying rights even while still inthe mother’s body, including the rightto life and state protection, guaranteedby no less than the Constitution.

3. Snuffing out that human life bydeliberate artificial means would bekilling it, or aborting it, a criminal actunder existing laws.

4. Many of the artificial birth controlmethods and contraceptives sought tobe purchased with public funds anddistributed and used by the governmenthave proven abortifacient affects thatinduce abortion, which is a crime.

The above train of reasoning isanchored on the premise that humanlife begins at conception.”

A REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL READING

OF THE 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER YR.A_________________REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO

PAROCHIAL VICAR

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do notlet your hearts be troubled. Youhave faith in God; have faith alsoin me.”. . . “Jesus said to him,’ I amthe way, the truth and the life. Noone comes to the Father exceptthrough me.”. . . “Amen. Amen Isay to you, whoever believes in mewill do the works that I do and willdo greater ones than these, becauseI am going to the Father.”(Jn. 14:1-2; 6; 12)

Faith, objectively speaking, is a gift fromGod. It is body or set of divine beliefsendowed on us by God together with hopeand charity through the sacrament ofbaptism to be believed and lived for oursalvation. As such, it is no ordinary giftbut a divine gift. It is a gift once accepteddemands appropriate response.

On the other hand, “faith”, in itssubjective sense, “is the recipient’sresponse to this body of divine revealedbeliefs.” It further means as in the wordsof the council fathers of the Vatican IICouncil document “Verbum Dei” as,“man’s complete submission of hisintellect and his will to God. With hiswhole being man gives his assent to Godthe revealer. Sacred Scriptures, the saiddocument declares, calls this humanresponse to God, the author of revelation,‘the obedience of faith’.” (CCC No. 143)

The gospel of the fifth Sunday of Eastertells us that it was the eve of Jesus’darkest hour as he and his disciples wereeating their final meal. His heart was inturmoil. He knew fully well that withinfew hours his earthly life will be takenaway from him. Despite of his knowledgeof the ghastly death that awaits him, Hestill told his disciples: “Do not let yourhearts be troubled. Have faith in God andhave faith in me.”

Albert Cylwicki in his book “His WordsResound”, writes that though Jesus’words were some of the most reassuringwords in the Holy Scriptures, yet for themany of us, they aren’t reassuring at all. These words, in fact, taken in the ambitof the present state of affairs are butsurrealistic. How can Jesus tell us that weshould worry at all? Can He not feel andsee all the troubles that afflict us?

Both in the national, local and personallevels, our life as Catholic Christians isbeing threatened by the “R.H. Bill No5043” known by so many names but morepopularly known as the “ComprehensiveHealth Bill”. Fiery debates for its approval

are now raging in the hallowed Chamberof Congress effecting polarities not onlyamong our legislators but also among usFilipinos. The tranquility and unity of thenation are greatly disturbed for both theopposing camps are “honing their axes”and “strengthening their ranks” to gainthe upper hand vital for the disapprovalor the passage of the said bill into a law.

On the personal level, we too have ourown individual troubles being effected bythis bill. Our life, i.e., of the living and ofthose of the unborn, are being threatenedby death and penal sanctions, as well asour moral life. Some of you have troubleswith your marriage. Some of you havetroubles with your children, with yourparents, with your boss and even withyour friends. Adding to these real troublesare some imaginary ones. We imaginefailures and losses and we are afraid. Weimagined criticisms and rejection and webecome paralyzed. It is true that all thesethings may not happen at all. Yet, theyupset our peace of mind.

Jesus has perceived the existentialreality of these problems. He alreadyknew each one of them. Thus, His wordsspoken during the Last Supper were themost relevant and reassuring words forus Filipino faithful. He had undergonealmost all these troubles when he was stillwalking the earth.

He had troubles with the Pharisees whotwisted His words to make them look likelies. He had troubles with his discipleswho understood so little of what he taughtof them. He had troubles with Judas whobetrayed him, so too with Peter whodenied him thrice and finally with hisimminent sufferings and death on thecross.

Despite of all these troubles Jesus was stillable to say calmly and surely to hisdisciples, “Do not let your hearts betroubled. Have faith in God and faith inme.” (Jn 14:2) This faith is a declarationthat when worst comes to worst, we willnever be destroyed by what we are afraidof no matter what it is. Our faith is anaffirmation that even if we are left aloneby ourselves there is somebody who willlead us to the place Jesus has preparedfor us for “wherever he is there we maybe too”.

These words of Jesus are not an escapefrom reality but an assurance of hisabiding presence with us come what may, particularly this “R.H Bill “No.5043.Jesus, however needs our cooperation.

Kami nga mga Pamatan-on

“STAND FIRM IN FAITH”Last April 26 - 29, 2011, youth from different Archdoiceses of Region VI andRomblon made a history at the Archdiocese of Kalibo, Aklan as they hosted theRegional Youth Day (RYD) 2011. The theme of the said event was “Stand Firmin Faith... Do All Works with Love.”Stand firm in faith or in tagalog: “Panindigan sa Pananalampalataya,” as BishopPablo David transalated it. He said, “Kung gagawa ka na rin lang ng isangbagay, gawin mo ito ng buong puso.” He is right! If we would do something, let’sdo it wholeheartedly so that we would never regret in the end. If we stronglybelieve in God, we must also believe in ourselves that we can do all things eventhe impossible one. If we serve God, we serve Him in the best way we canbecause God, Himself, gave His life to save us and He had never doubted it.“I owe Him, I have faith in Him..” It is what we always say, isn’t it? But myquestion is, does your faith in Him ends? Did you just owe Him because yourwish has been granted or you just need something from Him? Did you alwaysthank Him for the gift of life? Or you just always question Him with theimperfections in your life? We, Roman Catholics, believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of Heavenand Earth (as what we often pray)… But in times of trouble or when you feel thatthe world is against you, to whom do you blame these things? Isn’t it to Godwhom you believe? Some of us just pray because we need something but notHim. Sometimes you forget to thank God for the blessings He has given us andworst of all, you are too demanding to Him. Aren’t you ashame of yourself? Heis God who created us, not a genie who granted all your wishes.Isaiah 7:9(NIV) says: “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand atall.” If we the youth stand firm with the words of God and use His words to live,we could save the poor lives of the next generation. Jesus told His disciple,Moises, to spread the good news and now we are the next Moises of God. Adisciple who is ready to serve God with all his heart and soul and no matter whattemptations will come, we will STAND FIRM IN OUR FAITH TO GOD.

I thought RYD is just an ordinary seminar which I used to attend but it is definitelydifferent. In RYD I have met a lot of new friends from different places, with differentculture, but united by God. We had less listening sessions and we never get boredbecause there were so many activities that were so enjoyable and we had gainedmore knowledge. One of my most memorable activity is the Easter Walk. It was likehaving a tour around the Municipality of Banga, Aklan and in every station, we hadtime for reflections. We were being reminded of how powerful yet humble our God is.We also experienced a different kind of a Prayer Encounter where we had a great funand really felt that we were showered by the love of God.I never thought that I will experience living for e few days with a different family, whowere total strangers to me. But during the RYD, I am so grateful I had the chance toexperience being fostered by a family with a different culture yet I am loved as theirown daughter and sister. I really enjoyed staying with them and I had learned a lot fromthem including my first time to eat “pansit” (Thanks to Tita Diane and the one whoprepared the delicious chinese cuisine that I had not resisted it.) So funny but it is real.During our fellowship activity, I was so amazed with the singing Priests who sang lovesongs for us (just like in the Archdiocesan Youth Day in Jaro, where some Priests alsosang rock songs). If only they are not priests, anyone would really fall for them (hehe..).The fellowship ended, filled with love and enthusiast, as we experienced the SADSADand the ultimate snake dance in honor of Señor Sto. Aton nga dag-on da!(It’s my honor and privilege to be part of RYD and to represent our parish.Pamatan-on, tuig ta ini!)”

“We are in this world, to give everything we own, for the service of God, to challenge ourhumanity. Stand firm in faith. We, the youth of the world can stand in doing the things. LetHis will, will be done to us. With the greatest love, that He shares to everyone. We canstand.”Pila lang ini sa mga linya nga mabatian sa kanta nga “Stand firm in faith,” ang officialtheme song sang RYD 2011 nga ginhiwat sa Kalibo, Aklan sang April 26-29. Ini maytema nga: “Stand Firm in Faith.. Do all your works in love!” kag ginbuylogan sangnagakalain-lain nga mga Diocese sang Western Visayas kag Romblon.Antes kami maglakat, may ginhiwat nga pre-orientation sa St. Joseph Seminary upodsang mga pamatan-on halin sa iban nga mga parokya sa Archdiocese of Jaro. May mgaactivities nga ginhimo agod makilala pa gid namon ang amon mga kaupdanan, parehosang Easter Egg Hunt, Basketball (for girls), Patintero (for boys) kag fellowship. Naghiwat man sang Santos nga Misa, kagpagkatapos sang panyaga, gin hatagan kami sang tini-on agod makaupod namon angamon Host family. Nag-group sharing kag naghiwat sang Santos nga Misa.Nagsadsad kami palibot sang Cathedral kag nag-fellowship. Apang kung kita may mabaskog ngapagsalig kag nagapanindugan sa aton pagtuo sa Diyos,WE CAN BE SAVED!“If I speak in the tongues of men, and of angels but have not love, I am a noisy gong ora clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and allknowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but have not love, I amnothing. If I give away all I have to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love ispatient and kind; Love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does notinsist on its own way; it is not irritating or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, butrejoice in the right. Love bears all things, endures all things. Love never ends; ....so faith, hope, love abide these three; but the greatest of these is LOVE. Make love your aim,...”(1Cor. 13:4-7,13;14:1)

STATEMENT OF INCOME & EXPENSESFOR THE MONTH ENDED APRIL 2011

Ginasiling:The title of Mary Help of Christians is associated to the defense of theChristian Europe (Latin and Greek), the north of Africa and the MiddleEast from non-Christian peoples during the Middle Age. In 1572 theIslamic Ottoman Empire intended to invade the Christian Europe. PopePius V called Christian armies from all over Europe to defend the continentand asked the believers to pray to Mary in order to help the Christians. The defeat of the Muslim Turks was attributed to the intercession ofMary under such title.Ginasiling pa gid nga: It was on September 15, 1815 when Pope PiusVII instituted the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians celebration on May24. It was the Pope’s way of giving thanks to God and to the BlessedVirgin Mary for his safe return to Rome after his captivity ordered byNapoleon. Amo pagid ni ang iya ginsiling: Don Bosco recounts in his diary that on May 14,1862, he had a dream. It was about the battles the Church would face inthe latter days. In his dream, the Pope of those days anchors the “ship”of the Church between two pillars, one with a statue of Mary (Auxilium
