Natatandaan mo noongbata ka pa?Pinagtyagaan kitang habulin.Sa ilalim ng kamakapag ayaw mong maligo.Pagpasensyahan mo sanakung madalas, ako’y masungit,Dala na marahil ito ng katandaan.Pagtanda mo,maiintindihan mo rin.

Kapag may konti kang panahon,magkwentuhan naman tayo,kahit sandali lang.Inip na ako sa bahay,maghapong nag-iisa.Walang kausap.Alam kong busy ka sa trabaho,subalit nais kong malaman mona sabik na sabikNa akong makakwentuhan ka,kahit alam kong hindi kainteresado sa mga kwento ko.

Remember that the LXXis using Greek to translate the Old Testa-ment; the same Greek as used for the NewTestament. What we end up with is anentire Bible in Greek. Qahal is translatedinto English as multitude, company, con-gregation and assembly. In today’s Gospel we see publicansand sinners drawing close to ourLord Jesus. He welcomes them andeven eats with them. We know thatJesus also visited two other tax col-lectors in the persons of Zaccheusand Matthew. But who are thesepeople? He is rubbing elbows with!There are but the social outcasts andthe disenfranchised in Jewish soci-ety, people who are ostracized,looked down or despised and whothink they have been forgotten orforsaken by God.

The Lord’s welcoming attitude to-wards publicans and sinners, how-ever, does not elude the attentionof the religious authorities and itdraws flaks from them. The Phari-sees and the Scribes, who are im-bued with a sense of self-righteous-ness, murmur at what He is doing.They come down hard on it. In re-sponse Jesus gives three parableswhich portrays the merciful love ofthe Father.

The first parable is about the lostsheep. Here a shepherd who has100 sheep is ready to leave the 99and go out to search for the onewhich has been lost. On finding it,he puts it on his shoulder and comeshome rejoicing. Then flushed withsuccess the shepherd, on reachinghome gathers his friends and neigh-bors and shares his joy and eupho-ria with them.

The second one concerns the lostcoins. Here a woman with 10 coinsloses one. Then she lights up a lampand goes all over the house scouringfor the lost coin. On finding it, shecalls her friends and neighbors toshare with them in her jubilation.

The third parable is a very familiarstory to us and is one of the mostbeautiful stories the Lord has evertold – the Parable of the Lost Son.Her one of the two sons, the youngerone, demands from the father thathe be given his share of the inherit-ance of which the eldest son will al-ways have the lion’s share. To theJews one can only have his inherit-ance after the death of the father.What the younger son does is butan insult to the father who is stillalive. For it is tantamount to re-garding him as dead or it smacksof his impatience over his beingalive still.

Despite the affront to him the fatherbecause of his great love for theyounger son gives what he wants.The son after getting his share of hisfather’s possessions goes to a distantplace where on loose living hesquanders his money owing to whichhe has got many friends. After dis-sipating his fortune unfortunatelyfamine stalks the land and with hisfriends gone he decides to work in afarm where he has to feed swine. Hecomes to a point of feeding himselfwith the food of these animals in adesperate bid to satiate his hungerbut he has become such as outcastthat no one gives it to him

This just shows how far down thisson has fallen. For not just he hasleft his homeland to follow a looseform of living but he has also cometo associate himself with swine andlong to eat their food owing to hisneeds. To the Jews pigs are dirtyanimals so that they do not deserveto be raised much less eaten. Yes,how he has fallen into the abyss ofmoral degradation and decay.

Amidst his miserable and pitiablesituation this young man comes tohis senses, realizing who he is andwhat his dignity should be.

Remembering the merciful loveof his father and the comfort andabundance of his home he mus-ters the strength and courage torise above the quagmire of sinand begins the trek back homewhere the father has beenuntiringly, patiently, and end-lessly waiting for his eventualreturn. “If it takes forever I willwait for you… Anywhere youwander anywhere you go every-day remember I will wait foryou.” This must be what the fa-ther has been singing since heleft home.

As he approaches home the sonsings: “It’s good to touch thegreen, green grass of home.”And the father on seeing himfrom the distance sing “Back tomy waiting arms.” Thoughfeeble yet the father runs, mak-ing the dust fly, to meet him andthis he does though seeing nosign of remorse but just a mereand plain desire to return be-cause of his overflowing love forhim which even transcends cul-tural and social barriers. Atouching scene ensues.

No love holds a candle to that ofthe father. It is beyond comparein that it forgets the past andrecognizes him as still his sondespite the wrong he has done.That is why on the heels of hisreturn the father orders that hebe given three things to put on– a robe which shows that hisdignity has not been diminished;a pair of sandals which showsthat he is still a member of hisfamily and which also meansfreedom and a ring which meansthat the father’s love for him hasno end.

Then a great festivity follows tocelebrate his return. For a sonwho was dead has now come tolife and a son who was lost isnow found.

We may be the younger son inthe story. By the sins we com-mitted we wandered away fromthe father, abusing His love and

Ginasiling: The Cross is being ex-alted by all Christians as an instru-ment of salvation. Yes, we must learn to be forgiv-ing and loving like our heavenlyFather, ready to receive thosewho have wronged us. We needHis grace to be so. It is said thatwhen God demands, He suppliesthe grace.

Today there is reason to rejoicefor we have a God who is rich inlove and mercy as revealed alsoin the first reading in which Hethrough the intercession ofMoses forgives His people, theIsraelites, of their idolatrous actof making and worshipping amolten calf soon after he liber-ated them from Egyptian sla-very by holding back from pun-ishing them.
